Denpasar (Bali Post)—Denpasar (Bali Post)—Denpasar (Bali Post)—Denpasar (Bali Post)—Denpasar (Bali Post)—By this yearend, a number of activities to jazz up the year

change are ensured to be held by various institutions, both ofgovernment and private sector. Without exception for DenpasarCity Government that since the past few years always orga-nized some events by yearend. The current one in combinationwith Denpasar Festival, the year change 2009 will grace theheart of culture-based city.

However, the unavoidable impact of this activity is crowdedtraffic at a number of road routes around the center of city.Because, Denpasar City Government has made sure to closetotally the streets such as Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Kartini up toJalan Veteran. “Closing of those roads will start from the cross-road of Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Kartini until in front ofInna Bali Hotel,” said Division Head of Operation Control,Transportation Services of Denpasar, Ketut Sriawan, last Tues-day (Dec 22). The closing of roads becoming the main routes toeastern part of Denpasar City such as Sumerta, Sanur and otherareas in the east of Denpasar was ensured to result in thecrowdedness at other locations. Moreover, a number of otherroutes becoming alternatives were not so wide. “To minimizethis worries, we have socialized this matter far before the event,”said Sriawan last Tuesday.

Sriawan said that a number of routes used as the alternativesfor channeling the traffic streams, namely Jalan Kartini fromJalan Gajah Mada, remained normal. Meanwhile, the traffic fromJalan Sulawesi that usually became the route to Badung Marketand Kumbasari Market from Jalan Hassanudin would also betotally closed. Then, the traffic from south like Jalan Udayanato Jalan Veteran would also be closed and traffic would be takento Jalan Kaliasem. “For the route of Jalan Udayana right in frontof Headquarter of Udayana Military Commander remains openas usual,” said Sriawan.

At this stage, the organ ofbaby was not formed yet. “In the ex-amination of fetal membrane, themothers could know earlier whethertheir fetus undergoes any disorder ornot,” said Jaya Kusuma.

BOGOTA - Colombia said onTuesday FARC guerrillas slit astate governor’s throat hours afterthey kidnapped him during a bra-zen raid in one of worst rebelstrikes during President AlvaroUribe’s government.

The kidnapping of LuisCuellar, the Caqueta state gover-nor, underscored how LatinAmerica’s oldest insurgency re-mains capable of high-profile at-tacks despite being battered to itsweakest level in decades byUribe’s U.S.-backed offensive.

Armed rebels, dressed in mili-tary uniforms, blasted through thedoor of Cuellar’s house in a south-ern Colombian city late on Mon-day, killed a police guard anddragged the governor away fromhis wife and into a waiting jeep.

Cuellar’s body was found onTuesday as troops scoured the re-mote jungle in hopes of rescuinghim. The kidnapping was a re-minder of the darker days ofColombia’s conflict when lawmak-ers were easy prey for rebel squads.

“He had his throat cut, theyslaughtered him miserably,” Uribesaid in a national broadcast afterCuellar’s body was discoverednear the vehicle abandoned byrebels as they fled into jungle nearFlorencia city.

“As the armed forces were inpursuit, the terrorists cut thegovernor’s throat to avoid firingany shots,” he said.

The FARC, or RevolutionaryArmed Forces of Colombia, hadyet to issue an statement on thekidnapping.

CAIRO - Egypt confirmed on Tuesday it is engaged in constructionalong its border with Gaza but said it is not building what some re-ports have said is a steel wall to block cross-border smuggling.

Until now the foreign ministryhad refused to comment, but at anews conference ministry spokes-man Hossam Zaki said:

“The procedures that Egypt isundertaking inside its lands, whether building or constructionwork along the border with theGaza Strip, is an Egyptian concernthat is related to Egypt and Egyp-tian national security.”

“We refuse to call the construc-tion a steel wall and wonder wheresuch a name came from,” headded.

Zaki said the border work hadnothing to do with Egyptian media-tion between the Palestinian Author-ity and its Gaza-based rival Hamasand that it would continue even ifHamas were to sign an Egyptian-brokered agreement.

At least 500 Hamas supportersrallied along the border on Mondayto condemn the building of the wall, prompting Egyptian soldiers on theother side of the frontier to take uppositions behind sandbags.

The Head of Directorate General ofCustom and Excise for Bali, NTB andNTT Regional Office, Faried SyibliBarcia, last Tuesday (Dec 22), ex-plained about the capture. It originatedin when the suspect got out of from theQatar Airways. “We have carried out the con-struction for the past four monthswith only 30 percent percentage of

completion so far. This building isplanned to be finished around July2010,” said Setyarto.

Central Jakarta’s District PoliceChief, Senior Commissioner Hamidin, said the four men on critical conditionhad been evacuated. The victims’names were yet to be identified whenthey were brought to the hospital.

“We are still investigating thecause of the collapsed building,”Hamidin said adding that evacuationin the accident scene was conductedcarefully since the building madefrom heavy material such as steel.

Boediono defends decision to bail out Bank Centurybailout funds was correct in view ofthe conditions at the time when amonetary crisis similar to that of1997/98 was happening.

In view of that he said if the Cen-tury Bank which had been declaredas a failed bank at the time was notbailed out the effect would spreadto other banks.

“The case was declared systemicfollowing discussions on it in ameeting of central bank governors. The basis is information from thoseauthorized to study it,” he said.

Boediono said among the indica-tions that showed similarity with the1997/98 crisis was a quick flight ofcapital abroad followed by stagna-tion in domestic banking liquidity

and various rumors.“The collapse of a bank may

spread to other banks like what wehave seen before,” he said.

He said if Bank Century wasclosed, the situation would be ex-plosive and therefore the KSSK de-cided to immediately save it to pre-vent the recurrence of the 1997/98crisis. If that crisis recurred the costto be paid by the state would be veryextreme and therefore a quick re-sponse had to be taken to avoid it,he said.

The Bank Century has now beentaken over the Deposit InsuranceInstitute (LPS) and been renamedBank Mutiara which is now alreadyprofitable.

The comments from Chen Yunlin ap-peared to be aimed at assuaging oppositionconcerns that the pact could undermineTaiwanese sovereignty and lead to signifi-cant job losses on the island of 23 millionpeople.

Chen was speaking in the centralTaiwanese city of Taichung on the thirdday of his scheduled five-day visit.

The pact - formally known as theEconomic Cooperation Framework Agree-ment or ECFA - is the centerpiece of Presi-dent Ma Ying-jeou’s signature effort to linkTaiwan’s economy ever closer to China’slucrative markets. He says he hopes it willbe signed in the spring of 2010.

Since taking office in May 2008, theHarvard-educated Ma has eased tensionsacross the 100-mile-wide (160-kilometer-wide) Taiwan Strait to their lowest level in60 years, turning his back on predecessorChen Shui-Bian’s pro-independence poli-cies. The sides split amid civil war in 1949,and Beijing has made political unificationwith the island - achieved by force if nec-essary – the core of its Taiwan policy eversince. Speaking to a business group inTaichung, Chen emphasized the positiveaspects of the proposed ECFA deal.

Little is known about the deal exceptthat it would reduce restrictions on tradebetween the two sides, save for some Chi-nese agricultural and labor exports. Ifsigned, it is expected to be implementedgradually, with textiles, machinery and pet-rochemicals likely to be early beneficiariesof bilateral tariff reductions.

In an interview with The AssociatedPress on Tuesday, Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen of the main opposition Democratic Pro-gressive Party blasted Ma over the deal, charging he was negotiating with China ina way that flouts “democratic rules.”

Tsai says that ECFA will cost Taiwan-ese jobs and undermine Taiwan’s de factoindependence - charges Ma denies.

In his first 18 months in office, Mahas pushed a raft of business-boosting ini-tiatives with China, including the resump-tion of regular air and sea links after a hia-tus of 60 years and the ending of across-the-board restrictions on Chinese invest-ment in Taiwan.

Ma argues that a trade deal with Chinais necessary to prevent Taiwan’s economicmarginalization amid growing commercialties between Beijing and neighboring Asiancountries.

Vatican paper says ‘TheSimpsons’ are okely dokely

The paper credited “The Simpsons”— the longest-running American ani-mated program — with opening upcartoons to an adult audience.

The show is based on “realistic andintelligent writing,” it said, though itadded there was some reason to criti-cize its “excessively crude language, the violence of certain episodes orsome extreme choices by thescriptwriters.”

Religion, from the snore-evokingsermons of the Rev. Lovejoy toHomer’s face-to-face talks with God,appears so frequently on the show thatit could be possible to come up with a“Simpsonian theology,” it said.

Homer’s religious confusion andignorance are “a mirror of the in-difference and the need that mod-ern man feels toward faith,” the pa-per said.

It commented on several religion-themed episodes, including one inwhich Homer calls for divine inter-vention by crying: “I’m not normallya religious man, but if you’re up there, save me, Superman!”

“Homer finds in God his last ref-uge, even though he sometimes getsHis name sensationally wrong,”L’Osservatore said. “But these arejust minor mistakes, after all, the twoknow each other well.”

On Monday, a World Trade Or-ganization panel upheld a ruling ina case brought by the U.S. govern-ment that China was obstructingtrade by forcing foreign suppliers todistribute movies, music and booksthrough state-owned companies.

PARIS – Cardiovascular diseaselinked to obesity may be worse thanthought while health problems as-sociated with being underweightmay have been overstated, accord-ing to a study published by the Brit-ish Medical Journal (BMJ) onWednesday.

The paper, written by doctors inBritain and Sweden, seeks tofinetune a well-known tool — thebody mass index (BMI) — whichis used to measure obesity and ill-health.

BMI entails taking one’s weightin kilos and dividing it by the squareof one’s height, in metres. A BMIof 25-30 is generally consideredoverweight. while a figure of above30 indicates obesity.

Previous studies have al-ready found a big link be-tween BMI and higher riskof death from cardiovascu-lar disease, diabetes andsome cancers.

In contrast, a low BMI— in other words, peoplewho are very skinny — isassociated with increasedmortality from respiratorydisease and lung cancer.

But many experts havequestioned the findingsabout low BMI, arguingthat the figures could beskewed by somethingcalled reverse causality.Forinstance, diseases such aslung cancer, which causeweight loss, are being fac-tored in as low BMI, theyargue. And smoking andpoor socioeconomic cir-cumstances may also causebias.

Seeking to find outmore, specialists fromBritain’s University ofBristol and the KarolinskaInstitute in Sweden set outto get a wider view of theBMI benchmark.

NAZARETH, Israel – Just in time for Christmas, archaeologists on Monday unveiled what may have been thehome of one of Jesus’ childhood neighbors. The humble dwelling is the first dating to the era of Jesus to be discov-ered in Nazareth, then a hamlet of around 50 impoverished Jewish families where Jesus spent his boyhood.

tween Roman rulers and Jewish guer-rillas. The Jews of Nazareth dug cam-ouflaged grottos to hide from Romaninvaders, said archaeologist YardenaAlexandre, excavations director at theIsrael Antiquities Authority. But thehamlet was so far off the beaten paththat the caves were apparently notneeded, she said.

Based on clay and chalk shardsfound at the site, the dwelling appearedto house a “simple Jewish family,”Alexandre added, as workers carefullychipped away at mud with small pick-axes to reveal stone walls.

“This may well have been a placethat Jesus and his contemporaries werefamiliar with,” Alexandre said. A youngJesus may have played around the

house with his cousins and friends. “It’sa logical suggestion.”

The discovery so close to Christmaspleased local Christians.

“They say if the people do not speak, the stones will speak,” said the Rev.Jack Karam of the nearby basilica.

Archaeologist Stephen Pfann, presi-dent of the University of The HolyLand, noted: “It’s the only witness thatwe have from that area that shows uswhat the walls and floors were like in-side Nazareth in the first century.” Pfannwas not involved in the dig.

Alexandre said workers uncov-ered the first signs of the dwellinglast summer, but it became clear onlythis month that it was a structurefrom the days of Jesus.

New study sharpens focuson problems of obesity

mortality among more than a mil-lion pairs of Swedes, comprisingmother-and-son pairs and father-and-son pairs, over 50 years.

They found strong patterns ofmortality and BMI. The link wasespecially noticeable in cardiovas-cular disease — for which prevail-ing estimates may be “substantiallyunderestimated” — as well as dia-betes and kidney cancer.

But there was no evidence of anassociation between low BMI andan increased risk of respiratory dis-ease and lung cancer mortality.

The findings are important, be-cause they imply that obesityprogrammes could yield majorhealth benefits, says the study.

“Suggestions to the contrary areprobably misguided,” it adds.

Watching his team’s hapless dis-play in the Camp Nou as they fell toa 4-2 defeat against Johan Cruyff’sCatalonia side reminded me of thewords of yet another retired great.

Australian cricketing legendShane Warne made an assessment ofEngland’s spin bowler MontyPanesar that rings true of Maradona’smanagement career. Warne said thatdespite the Panesar establishing him-self in the England team he stilllooked like a man who had playedhis debut match 50 times.

After a year in the job, Maradona’sArgentina are still a long way off fromhaving a definite system or a set se-lection of starting personnel.

During his time in charge,Maradona has capped over 70 play-ers and experimented with back fives, midfield sixes and four pronged at-tacks. This uncertainty over their styleof play had Argentina running intoeach other on the pitch at times.

LONDON – Chelsea managerCarlo Ancelotti has likened John Terryto Italian greats Franco Baresi andPaolo Maldini in his latest show ofsupport for his beleaguered captain.

The England skipper has been hav-ing to defend himself from accusa-tions of money-grabbing after theNews of the World tabloid on Sun-day alleged he’d accepted a financialpayment to provide a tour ofChelsea’s training ground.

The paper claimed Terry, whocaptained the Premier League lead-ers in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at WestHam, arranged the visit to Chelsea’sCobham training complex for threeundercover reporters posing as busi-nessmen without permission fromAncelotti.

It is claimed that Terry took a10,000 pounds payment, 8,000pounds of which he wanted to go tothe ‘Make A Wish’ charity for chil-dren with the other 2,000 pounds go-ing to a middleman.

Ancelotti dismissed the report andthe former AC Milan coach went fur-ther by telling Tuesday’s LondonEvening Standard that centre-backTerry reminded him of Rossoneri de-fensive greats Baresi and Maldini, whom he played alongside at the SanSiro.

“Terry is like Franco Baresi andPaolo Maldini in personality, charac-ter and leadership,” Ancelotti said.

LONDON - Liverpool striker Fernando Torres hasbacked his teammates and manager Rafael Benitezto overcome the problems that have sofar blighted this season’s campaign.

Torres, who has recently beennamed in FIFA’s world XIteam, offered his support toBenitez, claiming it is downto the players to perform on aconsistent basis.

“I think sacking the man-ager is not a solution,” he said,as quoted by Press AssociationSport.

“The manager is not playing sowe have to be positive with him, tryto work with him. We are the mainreason, the players are the people thathave to find a solution to the situa-tion. The manager is not playing, sowe have to play much better.”

The Spanish international admit-ted that Liverpool are goingthrough a very difficult periodboth on and off the pitch, but re-mained confident theMerseysiders have the personnelcapable of regaining the form dis-played last term. “It’s a difficultsituation but every top team in theworld goes sometimes through a badsituation like Liverpool now,” he added.

Argentine - Diego Maradona has given football fans of Argentinayet another moment that will live long in their collective memory. Thetrouble is that the gifts ‘El Diego’ is bestowing these days are the typethat nobody wants.

On the other hand it was obviousthat barely over a month into takinghis post as manager of Catalonia,Cruyff had his players all doing spe-cific jobs in their natural positions.

Okay, so he had the cream ofBarcelona to choose from andCatalonia were never going to rollover for Argentina but let’s get real, the result but more importantly theperformance of Maradona’s teamwas completely unacceptable.

Argentina had many players un-available but who is going to come inbulk up the sieve like defense whichwas fielded in Barcelona. Can anotherWorld Cup really be squeezed out ofthe aging legs of Gabriel Heinze,Javier Zanetti and Walter Samuel?

Mario Bolatti and FernandoGago have both had tough ends to2009 but surely this game was theperfect opportunity for them to endtheir year on a high. The centralmidfield duo were woeful and com-

fortable over run by Xavi on his own.Wingers Javier Pastore and Angel

Di María may have both got a goaleach but they wasted possession farmore times than they used it wisely.Up front Ezequiel Lavezzi providedsome bright sparks but his partnerGonzalo Higuain put on an exhibi-tion of poor finishing. MartinPalermo who replaced Higuain failedto connect with the ball once duringhis 25 minutes on the pitch.

One bright point for Argentina wasright-back Cristian Alvarez but even hewas found wanting as Catalonia got theirfirst just before half-time. As Bojan’spass traveled across the pitch, Joan Verduhad time to salute the pass before bring-ing it down. He then lofted in a centerwhich headed home under no pressure.

It is very rare that a goal is scoredin football without some kind of mis-take being made but the errors of theArgentine defense were far too el-ementary for international football. The lack of a challenge on Bojan ashe waltzed through for Catalonia’ssecond, Nicolas Pareja’s foul for thepenalty and the free near post headerfor the fourth were all avoidable.

Torres: Sacking Benitez Will NotSolve Liverpool’s Problems

We have to just recover the mentality and the confi-dence in ourselves and everything will be different.”

The Euro 2008 winner went on to admit hisbelief that the Anfield club lack the necessary

funds to attract players of sufficient quality inthe January transfer window. “Obviously we

need players,” Torres conceded.“If we can bring quality players itshould be really positive for us, but I

think the situation is really diffi-cult because I think we don’t

have money to bring in thebest players.”

Club captain StevenGerrard, who featuresalongside Torres inthe world XI, re-fused to criticise in-dividual perfor-mances and echoedTorres’ sentimentsthat a team effort isrequired in order tot u r n a r o u n dLiverpool’s for-tunes. “I don’t thinkit’s right to pick outindividual players,”he said.

“We’re a team,we’re a group and we

are responsible forwhere we’re lying in the

league at the moment. Allof us have got to stick to-gether and try and pullthrough and turn it around.”

“I am very lucky to have this playeras my captain,” the Italian added.

Ancelotti also drew a comparisonbetween Chelsea owner RomanAbramovich and the Russianbillionaire’s Milan counterpart SilvioBerlusconi, the Italian prime minis-ter. “Abramovich is like Berlusconi,”Ancelotti said. “He has a passion forhis club, he likes to speak about foot-ball, as does Berlusconi. Roach said he hoped the issuewasn’t brought up as a way to getMayweather out of the fight. “He’slooking for a back door out,” Roachsaid. “We’re eager to fight.”

“The motivation I think is prettystraightforward,” Schumacher said.“The call I got from Ross at the endof November concerning the chanceto go racing, Mercedes being in-volved, I felt great.

“I never left the race track. I wastired of F1 by the end of 2006, but inthree years of absence I got back allthe energy that I am feeling right now.I played around with motorbikes andI feel ready for some serious stuffnow.”

Schumacher originally retired fromF1 at the end of 2006, and he had ap-peared fully content to be away fromthe pressures and strains of racing inmotor sport’s top category.

The events of the summer ap-peared to have rekindled his enthusi-asm for F1 and when Brawn GP failedto conclude a deal with world cham-pion Jenson Button for 2010,Schumacher was instantly installed asthe favourite to replace him.

Aoyama impressed the newlyformed Interwetten HondaMotoGP team with his pace on daytwo of the Sepang rookie test - alsoattended by fellow RCV newcomerMarco Simoncelli and the Hondatest team.

After setting a 2min 4.38sec -without the aid of electronics - onday one, Aoyama made a signifi-cant step forward with a 2min3.25sec on day two. That compareswith a 2min 3.70 for Simoncelli, while the official race lap recordstands at 2min 2.180sec from 2008(the 2009 race was wet).

“We’re still using the ex-GaborTalmacsi bike,” Aoyama’s teammanager Daniel Epp toldCrash.net. “We did 60 laps yester-

Aoyama ‘learning fast’ - and getting fasterday and just over 40 laps today, be-cause of the rain shower in the after-noon.

“The lap time was quite nice, justover one second from the laprecord,” he continued. “Hiro is learn-ing fast. Today we worked with trac-tion control and engine braking, which is the big difference betweenMotoGP and all other classes.”

As at his first test in Valencia,Aoyama’s use of electronics is be-ing carefully moderated by crewchief Tom Jojic to avoid creatinga false impression of the RCV’scharacter.

Nevertheless, with proper use ofelectronics vital for MotoGP suc-cess, Aoyama knows he must learnto exploit what presently seemslike a ‘strange’ sensation.

“Yesterday we didn’t put any

electronic controls. Today theystarted to introduce some con-trols,” confirmed Aoyama, speak-ing to Crash.net inside the pit ga-rage.

“It felt strange because I like tocontrol the bike myself but the ma-chine does it. And you can choosewhere and which part it controls, which angle etc. It’s quite compli-cated for me to use all the packageof this bike. I need to go step-by-step, study and then go faster.

“I’ve ridden many types ofbikes, but this is something special,”he continued, pointing to the RCVnearby. “It is like a nice new toy forme! There are so many options tochange and it is easy to get confusedif you don’t know how to use it. Atthis moment I don’t know exactlywhat to change and in what way.”
