PREFACE

This study is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Sarjana Sastra (S.S) in the Faculty of Letters at Universitas Pamulang. The title of this study is “English Idiom Analysis in Victoria and the Rogue” novel. The aim of this study is to find out the types and meaning of English idioms in “Victoria and the Rogue” novel. In relation with the result of this study, the writer realizes that is far from perfection, but the writer hopes that this study will be useful for all readers, especially for the college students or the next writers who are interested in analyzing Linguistics, especially about English idiom. The writer also openly and gladly accept all critics and constructive suggestions from any parties in order to make this study to be better and to enlarge our knowledge about the subtitling strategies.

ABSTRACT

This study concern about idiom are important to be understand. This study aims to describe the types and the meanings of English idiom in “Victoria and the Rogue” novel. This study is focused on finding types of idiom that often used in the dialogues in “Victoria and the Rogue” novel. This study used qualitative method to analyze data. The writer uses Fernando’s theory (1996) about idiom and idiomaticity. In his book, he defines about three types of idioms, they are pure idiom, semi idiom, and literal idiom. The result of this study, the writer found 30 (thirty) English idioms which are separeted by three types of idiom. Such as, 9 (nine) pure idiom, 7 (seven) semi idiom and 14 (fourteen) literal idiom.

ABSTRAK

Studi mengenai idiom sangatlah penting untuk dimengerti. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tentang jenis dan makna dari inggris idiom dalam novel berjudul “Victoria and the Rogue” . Studi ini berfokus dalam mencari jenis jenis inggris idiom yang sering digunakan didalam percakapan dalam novel “Victoria and the Rogue”. Studi ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam menganalisa data. Penulis menggunakan metode dari Fernando (1996) tentang idiom dan idiomaticity. Dalam bukunya, dia menjelaskan tentang tiga jenis idiom,adalah pure idiom, semi idiom dan literal idiom. Adapun hasil dari studi ini, penulis menemukan 30 (tiga puluh) inggris idiom yang terbagi kedalam tiga jenis inggris idiom, diantaranya 9 (sembilan) pure idiom, 7 (tujuh) semi idiom dan 14 (empat belas) literal idiom.
