  • *THE EFFECTIVE METHODETO REDUCE THE POWDER FACTOR BASED ON ROCKS CHARACTERISTIC IN PT. KALTIM PRIMA COALPresented by:Yuli Prihartono, ST & Andrias Santoso, STPT. KALTIM PRIMA COALINDONESIAN DRILL & BLAST CONFERENCE 2011THE SULTAN HOTEL JAKARTAMONDAY, JANUARY 24 2011

  • *Contents:BackgroundImprovement Project Identification and Proposed SolutionTrials & The Results

  • 1. BACKGROUND

  • *Background:Lack of DTH (Down The Hole) capacity had resulted in explosive charging in MOD operation areas couldnt be optimized as the hole condition (wet & dry). The effort for PF reduction using Stemming Block and Air Deck hadnt got the optimum result. The standard guidance for Drill & Blast design development which accurately considering the rock characteristic hadnt been established yet therefore the PF in MOD during 2009 was relatively high compared to the rock characteristic.

Goals: Reduce PF from 0.386 (actual PF 2009 as the base line) to 0.331 (actual PF 2010) or 14.2% reduction.

Boundary: MOD Operations (J Pit, Bendili Pit, & AB Pit)Not Sacrifice digging rate

  • 2. IMPROVEMENT PROJECT IDENTIFICATION & PROPOSED SOLUTION

  • What We Have DoneSteps of Project :BrainstormingCollecting & Analysis Data BenchmarkingDevelop proposed solutionTrial expanded patternVideo ObservationsDevelop base-line measurementDevelop Cost-Benefit estimation*D&B Improvement Project Identification:Drill & Blast has successfully identified the critical improvement projects, that mainly focused to the PF reduction and increase capacity of DTH.Scope of DiscussionThis presentation will only discuss to the EFFECTIVE METHODE TO REDUCE THE POWDER FACTOR BASED ON THE ROCKS CHARACTERISTIC.

  • Proposed Solutions*

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS1Trial expanded pattern at all MOD pit areas (HT: 11, Pit J:6, BIG:6).2Develop Drill & Blast guideline (New SOP) by considering geological characteristic at MOD pits.3Socialize the new SOP to the relevant parties (eg. Short-term Eng, Drill& Blast Eng, Drill & Blast operation, Pit Geologist/Geotechnical).4Implementation and evaluation of the new SOP.

  • *ResultsDecrease 14.2% of Powder Factor from 0.386 Kg/Bcm (average during 2009) to 0.331 Kg/Bcm (average during 2010).Financial Benefit: Cost difference of blasted material between 2009 against 2010 was $0.035/Bcm.Total Blasted Material in 2010 was 178,532 KBcmTotal cost saving in 2010 was $ 6.25M/annum. Introduce and implement new SOPs to provide guidance in Drill & Blast plan development based on rock properties to get optimum PF.
