Para Pelanggan TransNusa yang terhormat,

Pada 30 Mei 2009 TransNusa meresmikan Kantor Pusat baru di Jl. Palapa No. 7, Kupang-NTT.

Juvi Jodjana CEO TransNusa

To customers of TransNusa Air Services

Welcome aboard!

On the 30th May 2009, our new head office in Kupang located at Jl. Palapa No.7 was

finally opened and inaugurated by the Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, Drs. Frans Lebu

Raya accompanied by the Vice Governor and various top government officials including

our Commisioner and Directors. With this new head office, we expect our service

exellence will improve dramatically in the East Nusa Tenggara area.

Along with the opening of the new office, we now have a new inflight magazine.

Formerly known as The East, the new-look magazine now called the TransNusa inflight

magazine, also shows our customer-focused aspirations: we are hoping for a magazine

that entertains you our passengers and clients, while at the same time providing

information about destinations and businesses in the region.

In our story, Kupang, Hub of the east, we look at a thriving town that is the gateway

to the myriad of islands in the east of Indonesia, while Driving to the races presents

attractions in the western half of the island of Sumbawa. Lombok - go for it focuses

on the exciting activities available on the island of Lombok and allows us to promote

TIME 2009 (Tourism Indonesia Mart and Expo) to be held on the island of Lombok from

October 16 to 19 which we, as an airline, wholly support as an event that shows off the

potential of Nusa Tenggara as the best destination beyond Bali.

Once again let me wish you a pleasant flight and my sincere hope that you have a

fantastic stay wherever your plans take you.

Dining at the Square is dining in what everyone says is Senggigi’s fi nest restaurant – a dining venue that is now becoming a benchmark for all future Lombok eateries.

The Square now means that Lombok residents and visitors alike can dine on dishes prepared by talented chefs from around Indonesia, confi dent of the quality of the meals - a mouth-watering variety of cuisines, including international dishe, and innovative Asian-fusion and Chinese cooking styles, using the freshest of local and imported ingredients

The beverages list includes premium imported wines and a wide range of cocktails and cold drinks from an extensive bar. Some just stop in for a drink or some coff ee with friends. Others make use of the restauarant at lunch time.

But dining is more than just food and drinks, overall ambience is important, and the Square seems to have got it just right; where a romantic dinner in the cool garden setting alongside the pond is just as enticing as the more conversational tables upstairs on the terrace, overlooking the action on the main street.

The Square restaurant has a speedy hotspot providing wireless internet access for its guests who often bring their laptops to the table while wining and dining, or as they relax in the cool lounge doing their business in style.

The well-trained staff and attentive service ensure that your dining experience runs smoothly while for some interesting post dining relaxation, the Square off ers fi ne Illy coff ees and Cuban cigars for you to enjoy.

Sometimes things have to be just right.

When it’s important that everything is

just right

Never let it be said if you’re young or young at heart that you were in Lombok and at some time or other you didn’t set foot in Marina Café.

The upbeat venue has two levels of bars and entertainment where every week some of Indonesia’s top bands and DJs do their thing to the cheers of Marina patrons. There’s a cool courtyard where the volume is lower and the action always gives you something diff erent to look at – even if it is only checking out who’s arriving and who’s leaving – that goes on all night long.

There are quiet tables in dark corners, booths to share and big spaces for groups who want to enjoy the evening together.

Dancing and listening to music can make you hungry – that’s where Marina’s great snacks and meals come into the picture. Marina is known for its great pizzas. Choose from nine diff erent styles at easy-on-the-pocket prices (Rp39,000 medium; Rp44,000 large). Or you can grab a snack while having a drink, and watching the

action on stage. Snacks range from Rp15,000 to Rp28,000 and include

corn chips, spring rolls, calamari rings, French fries and fi sh fi ngers.

There are two salads (Rp15,000 and Rp20,000), seven Indonesian dishes and six Western off erings.

Marina’s like that.... that’s why it’s a legend. It sort of says: Just

come in and join the party. It’s a place for meeting new friends,

watching the local action or getting together with your party pals for a top night out!

There is no time like the present to consider the boundless tourism opportunities off ered by the many islands of Indonesia. With the state of the world’s economies in disarray, practical and aff ordable holiday destinations will be all the rage in the immediate future. Spending power is down – travelers want value for money – Indonesia off ers aff ordable travel and accommodation options that can’t be beaten.

Where better for buyers and sellers of Indonesian tourism travel options to meet than in Indonesia itself on a stage that has successfully brought buyers and sellers together for the last twelve years in Indonesia’s premier travel event, TIME.

And this year it’s TIME 2009 to be held on the beautiful island of Lombok, now being hailed as Indonesia’s rising star of tourism and just a 20-minute-fl ight away from Bali.

As the JVC people say, stop putting off the stuff you really want to do.

Because there’s no rewind button on life8

The credit cards are brim full of disposable income, the kids

have packed their fl ippers, the ‘duty-frees’ are itching to be

uncorked, and for a few weeks you’re ready to rock like there’s

no tomorrow.

Let’s face it, most vacations that you spend your family’s

hard-earned cash on turn out like munching on a hot dog

when you’d really prefer to be romancing a lobster thermidore.

Most holidays never really measure up to the hype in the

vouchers. The reality is rarely as good as the glossy pictures.

The crocodile farm with its over-fed crocs was a rip-off . The Taj

Mahal - seventh wonder of WHOSE world? Disneyland takes

you for a ride. And paradise ? – Milton does seem to have it

right.

But the world is not only a little smaller, it has changed

- holidays have to be WONDERful and accommodate wild

expectations. In that bevy of holiday treats, there has to be

packed away some goodies that punctuate the usual round of

activities with things to do that raise the level of excitement

and actually hit passion pay-dirt - the guarantee that you can

at least say: “money well spent”.

Here then is a cocktail of Lombok - Sumbawa treats that will

turn your away-from-home adventure into a banquet of

out-of-body experiences that will ensure that even the most

hardened whiner can say that the hol was a good’un.

If you surf or climb mountains, you probably already knows

what’s in store for you in Lombok or Sumbawa. These two

islands have swell-driven, liquid magic with the consistency

of an assembly-line production system - now that’s rare.

There are waves that suck you in with the same intensity and

satisfaction as that fi rst swallow of a cold beer when your

throat feels like the Sahara Desert. Smaller, more forgiving

waves can be found at Grupuk – good for beginners and

week-end surfers.

Lombok’s Mt Rinjani with her 3,728 meter peak and

Sumbawa’s Mt Tambora at 2,800 metres will bring out the

beasts within the most ardent of extreme envelope pushers.

Clawing one’s way to the top of Mt Rinjani is a struggle of

mind over sections of very steep matter towards a sunrise only

equalled once before in the book of Genesis. Tambora on the

other hand, makes up for its lack of height with an obstacle

course of hazards (leeches that suck, poisonous briar patches,

a crater edge as thin as pie crust) ..... designed to dissuade

climbers from reaching a crater so huge it was once ground

zero for the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. But

it’s worth it.

Can you ever claim to be an earthling if you never bothered

to explore the realm that makes up two thirds of our planet

earth - the seas and oceans? You should be ashamed of

yourselves if the answer is “no” and get yourself quick smart

down to an introduction with the inhabitants of that watery

dimension. There is no better place to do just that than in the

waters around Lombok and Sumbawa - playground to more

than 3,000 varieties of fi sh. And you can play too! But unless

you want to snorkel, you need a life support system for those

marine expeditions and you don’t have to be fat rich guys to

have fun. The 3 Gili islands are waiting just off the Lombok

mainland. See the friendly folk at Dream Divers who, with

their excellent instruction, will have you below the surface of

the sea enjoying another world in no time at all.

It’s true that a long trek through the wilderness is not

everyone’s cup of vacation tea. If you’d like to walk for about

forty minutes through a small slice of rain forest, over a few

deliciously cool mountain streams, you can stand face to face

with one of east Indonesia’s most awesome, yet secluded

waterfalls with a body of white steamy high mountain water

that literally jettisons itself off a rock face like a rainbow

sending spray 100 meters down the valley. The thrill is to get

berenang menikmati dinginnya air pegunungan.

into the freezing water and swim around the back of the descending torrents without getting

slammed under (always something to satisfy an adrenalin junky). Kids love the place. You will

too.

OK, OK OK, you want to know if there’s any REAL action. The kind that keeps you up all night

and down all day. Senggigi, Lombok’s equivalent to Bali’s Kuta, Spain’s Ibiza, and Australia’s

Gold Coast, has its own array of happy hours and late-night hot spots that are as cool or loud as

any night hooter would wish for. The Senggigi strip, as it was once aptly called, is a beach-side

avenue wherein a growing number of restaurants and bars, cafes, discos and pubs await the

chance to ambush the uninitiated. At least have one drink at The Marina so you can say you have

been to Lombok’s legendary watering hole that has entertainment every night of the week.

As the JVC people say, stop putting off the stuff you really want to do. Because there’s no rewind

button on life. Oh and don’t forget the golf sticks.

So pack your bags - go for it.

Race toWitchMountainFun for all the familyFormer professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson (aka "The Rock") makes family-friendly fare with director Andy Fickman’s (THE GAME PLAN) sci-fi adventure,RACE TOWITCH MOUNTAIN. Johnson plays Jack Bruno, a surly former felon who istrying to stay out of trouble by driving a cab in Las Vegas and who embarks uponthe adventure of a lifetime when two teens appear in his taxi and need a ride to(seemingly) the middle of nowhere. He quickly realizes that the mysterioussiblings, Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig), are far fromaverage--especially when they are pursued by a villain wearing a high-tech suit ofarmor. With the help of Dr.Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino), the trio travels toWitchMountain, a secret government outpost in the Nevada desert, with the hopes ofevading their pursuers and sending Sara and Seth home--and saving Earth in theprocess. This latest installment in theWitch Mountain series comes more than 30years after the release of the first two films, ESCAPE TOWITCH MOUNTAIN andRETURN FROMWITCH MOUNTAIN. Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who playedsiblings Tia and Tony in the original films, appear in small but pivotal roles as awaitress and a sheriff. Johnson makes Bruno likable, even though the characterbarely likes himself. Robb and Ludwig are well cast as the earnest siblings whohold the fate of the world in their hands. Chase scenes abound and special effectsthat highlight the teens’ special powers are prevalent, but the film remains kid-friendly. Cheech Marin and Garry Marshall make brief cameo appearances.

The drive from the ‘ferry-from-Lombok’ landing point in West Sumbawa to the capital Sumbawa

Besar uses a road that says “eat me up and don’t worry about the speed”. Straight stretches are

plenty, and just when you’re getting bored with top gear, the highway menu throws in some nice

mountain ‘s’ bends that let you crunch the gears to your heart’s content. Have fun, but look out for

the following moving hazards: big buses that forget that the road has two lanes, cows and horses

with a death wish, thousands of horse-drawn buggies in one-horse towns, trucks and buses

covered in a human blanket, and more goats than you’d ever fi nd as stand-ins in a “Lawrence of

Arabia” movie.

Between the branches you can see the many sparkling bays and inlets that really characterize

Sumbawa – the most spectacular and prominent being Badas Bay (let’s avoid the obvious pun)

while in the distance a huge plateau-like shape off the coast materializes and the map tells us

that it is Moyo Island. It’s home to deer, wild boar, eagles, designer waterfalls, golden beaches and

coral reefs.

The small group of divers that have already sampled Moyo’s choice dive spots would rather keep it

a secret, but word is fast spreading that there are uncrowded sites worth going that extra fathom

to visit – Moyo has undamaged coral that is teeming with fi sh, giant sponges, cuttlefi sh and

mantas. Once a hunter’s dream, Moyo, with its deer and wild boar, is now a huge nature reserve.

Driving, diving, trekking and racing.

The onset of more pedestrians, horse buggies, bicycles, yellow

taxi vans and whining motor scooters, is a not-so-gentle

reminder you are entering a town of some consequence.

You manoevre into Sumbawa Besar the regional capital of

Sumbawa. Nothing much to rave about there – your usual

empty parade ground, busy police statues and the only

tourist trap a one-way road system that becomes a maze of

seemingly non connecting arteries (common in Indonesian

cities) that eventually bring you back to the start. Sumbawa’s

most well known accommodation choice is and has always

been Hotel Tambora and for those driving on to Dompu and

land’s end, Bima in the east of the island, its defi nitely “last

nasi goreng for many miles”.

From Sumbawa Besar it’s almost a 200 km drive to the big

land mass that can be detected across the bay in the hazy

distance - no less than the huge headless trunk of Mt Tambora

that has formed a thumb-like peninsula that protrudes out

into the sea north of Sumbawa creating

The drive out along the Mt Tambora peninsular is a geologist’s

heaven. The lava plain terrain is still spectacular; a volcanic

landscape of rounded hillocks that were once vents and escape

routes for rivers of lava and other volcanic ejecta that still litter

the ground. Hovering in the background is the torso of the former four thousand meter ‘I-was-

your –worst-nightmare’ giant that blew its top in April 1816 in the greatest volcanic eruption in

recorded history.

Would-be trekkers should head to the tip of the peninsula to a small timber town called Calabai

and then up into the mountain to a small village called Pancasila which is the jump-off point for

the excursion up mighty Tambora.

Near Calabai is a small island named Satonda lying just off the northern tip of the island. The

former summit of Mt Tambora, says local lore, now resides as innocent Satonda Island in a quiet

sea with its crater lake and a very defi nite former summit-of-a mountain shape.

The island looks like something out of Leonardo Di Caprio’s ‘The Beach’ – big hill rising out of

a crystal clear sea, deserted beach, palm trees, but unfortunately no hot babes. A short ten-

minute hike inland reveals a pristine and shimmering lake surrounded by steep (crater) walls.

The dive in the waters surrounding the island reveals splendid and, surprise surprise, totally

undamaged coral as well as tons of fi sh.

Equally sensational and not to be missed on a trip to Sumbawa are the buff alo races where the

need to plough a new rice fi eld full of watery mud has been turned into an exciting spectator

sport. Pairs of water buff alo urged on by their “jockeys” riding behind their charges on nothing

more than a fl imsy sled careen through the mud towards a bright piece of cloth tied to a stick. It

may not be the Kentucky Derby but it’s just as exciting and the prize money runs into millions of

rupiahs – as does the value of the winning bulls.

The mention of Kentucky Derby leads us to another traditional sport on Sumbawa – yes you

guessed it – horse racing. Small boys, I’m told none older that twelve years of age, in races

of fi ve competitors, manouevre their charges at breakneck speeds over a circular impromptu

course riding to win. With probably more enthusiasm than is ever seen on any country circuit in

the world No.1 receives a hero’s welcome.

On the western tip of the island of Timor is the lively town of Kupang which is also the capital

of East Nusa Tenggara – meaning it covers areas like Rote, Sabu, the idyllic Solor and Alor

Archipelagos, Sumba, Flores and Komodo.

Kupang is all energy and commerce, a bustling city that is forever on the move and with the

growing interest in tourism in the surrounding islands, it’s just getting busier. A real hub of

activity servicing the vast region that is East Nusa Tenggara. From Kupang fl ights and ferries

provide transport to the vast area and islands of a province that still has much be discovered.

The city centre is scruff y and noisy, with streets patrolled by squadrons of Indonesia’s most

outrageous bemos, each kitted out with a bombastic sound system. Though Kupang does not

have a profusion of cultural or architectural attractions (lots of Churches), it’s a friendly place.

It’s a reasonable base to linger for a few days if you’re waiting for a fl ight or boat as did English

naval offi cer Captain William Bligh after being cast adrift by the mutinous crew of the Bounty

in 1789.

And while most travellers utilize Kupang more as a transit stop for journeys to other very

popular desitnations in the East Nusa Tenggara area than as a prime destination itself, this

writer suggests that Kupang and its immediate surroundings have enough attractions to

warrant a stay of a few days.

The most endearing factor is that Kupang is literally ‘by (or on) the sea’. Whether your

accommodation is on the low hill overlooking the the beach that stretches the length of

Kupang, the sea is forever in sight and the healthy smell of the ocean is forever in the air.

Fish restaurants, fi sh markets, small traditional grilleries line the stretch of beach known as

pasir panjang (literally, long sands/beach). Particularly in the evening, restaurants as well as

small stalls are busy barbquing all amnner of fi sh staright off the fi shing boast that ply the rich

surrounding waters. Grilled over hot coals and covered with an assortment of delicious spices

eclectically created to produce exquisite tasting fi sh meals, the taste is like nowhere else in

Indonesia.

But you can’t (though you may want to!) eat fi sh all the time, and ironically despite the

profusion of fi sh the people of Kupang eat more beef than anywhere else in Indonesia – that’s

23

when it’s time to try the local meat delicacy, “daging se’i that has been cut in long rope like

strands, cured and slightly smoked then mixed with milk, salt and spices in either a sweet

or savoury style – very tender that roughly has a taste somewhere between Irish stew and

German sausage!

The people of Kupang love to sing and party and to that end have developed their own

instrument called Sasando which is something like a harp but also like a mandolin that

produces a unique sound that lends itself to both western tunes and traditional alike.

Further afi eld, many travelers head to Soe, about 110 kms from Kupang about a 2-hour drive

that is located at 800 meters above sea level so is a cool refreshing change from the heat of the

coastal regions. Great views and traditional NTT houses characterize the area – on a drive to the

north-east just the activity beside the main road provides interesting viewing. Some travelers

go to the port area and catch small boats to the island of Semawu located about an hour away

with its translucent waters and pefect snorkeling.

Sampling Kupang is unlike anywhere else in Indonesia as it’s a city without famous tourist

attractions - perhaps that’s why it’s so pleasant.

daging se’i.

The Regional Government of East Nusa Tenggara has just

announced that they will be hosting an international surfi ng

competition named the Nemberala-Bo’a Open 2009 from

September 17-20 on the beaches of Nemberala and Bo’a on

the island of Rote. According to the Regent of Rote, Leonardus

Hanning, this professional surfi ng event is part of his regency’s

participation in the Visit Indonesia Year 2009 international

tourism eff ort, and will draw international and Indonesia’s top

professional surfers to compete in the world-class waves of

Rote in September.

The Nemberala-Boa Open 2009 will be a 6-star prime ISC

sanctioned professional surfi ng competition with a total prize

purse of Rp 64 million on off er (approximately USD 6,500),

with Rp 20 million (USD 2,000) going to the fi rst place fi nisher.

Rote Island is part of the regency of Kupang which is the

capital city of ETN.

Nemberala is a postcard perfect white sand stretch of beach

with tall palm trees ringing the perimeter. The lefthand

Nembrala reef break provides some of the longest wave rides

in Indonesia while just a bit further south is the righthand

reefbreak of Bo’a. It is a high performance wave where the

advanced surfers can really show off their best tricks and

moves. .

Surf season in Rote generally runs from April to November,

when the trade winds start to blow from East to West. During

the months of September and October the waves will break

best in Nemberala and Bo’a, hence the choice of the middle of

September to have the contest and ensure that the best wave

conditions possible are there for the competitors.

It is expected that over 100 competitors will come to the

Nemberala-Bo’a Open in September for the competition which

will require approximately three days to complete.

The Nemberala-Bo’a Open will not only be about surfi ng

but will also act as a tourism promotion event to expose the

beauty of the island of Rote to an international audience.

During the three days of competition there will be various

local programs staged to allow the competitors and crew

to see more of the culture, meet the local people, and tour

several of the many scenic spots around the island.

Gubernur NTT , Frans Lebu Raya pada Sabtu (30/5) meresmikan Kantor Pusat PT. TransNusa Air Services di Jl. Palapa No. 7,

Kupang.

Offi cially opened by the Governor of NTT, Drs. Frans Lebu Raya on May 30 2009, TransNusa’s new Kupang building and headquarters has quickly assumed the role as a major centre of travel activity, symbolising a new upward swing of business for the people in the NTT region.

Said Governor Drs. Frans Lebu Raya of the new 4-story offi ce block: ”It surely can be seen as a hub for the many spokes reaching out to all the corners of NTT - the government wholly supports the eff orts of TransNusa.”

Managing Director of TransNusa, Juvi Jodjana said ”We have worked hard to develop NTT over the last 4 years by providing air transport – demand has increased as has the load factors and routes – there is now much needed access to areas that were once fairly isolated which is good for business and of course tourism – for example, where there were previously only a few fl ights a week there are now daily fl ights to Alor, Ruteng and Labuhanbajo and now two fl ights a day to Ende and Maumere.”

TransNusa is playing a signifi cant part in making Kupang the area’s air transport hub. We provided the impetus for the introduction of the fi rst Airbus A-320 of Mandala Airways into the NTT area with its fl ights from Surabaya and was involved in the talks that have led to Garuda establishing the Kupang – Denpasar – Jakarta route, while still pushing for Garuda to begin a route to Darwin and several other Australian cities.”

Juvi adds: “ We are dedicated to actively promoting tourism in the Nusa Tenggara region and as such our network ranging from Surabaya to Bali to Lombok and Sumbawa and on to Flores and Kupang is providing a means by which domestic and international travelers can now reach some of the beautiful islands in the east of Indonesia - our aim is to provide much needed connections with the main intenational carriers and major local airlines.”

TransNusa’s active role in the tourism area can be seen in the participation in international events such as Deep Indonesia, ATF and IITF and helping to provide assistance for many familiarisa-tion trips working with travel agents in Jakarta, Surabaya and Bali and communicating with investors about the huge possibilites of investment in the region.
