Perhutani didirikan berdasarkan Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor: 15 Tahun 1972, kemudian diubah dengan Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor: 2 Tahun 1978, Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor: 36 Tahun 1986, Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor: 30 Tahun 2003 dan Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor: 72 Tahun 2010.
Sejak 2 Oktober 2014 Perhutani menjadi induk Holding BUMN Kehutanan dengan bergabungnya 5 (lima) perusahaan kehutanan yaitu PT Inhutani I, PT Inhutani II, PT Inhutani III, PT Inhutani IV dan PT Inhutani V sebagai anak perusahaan sesuai Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor: 73 Tahun 2014.
Perhutani was estabilished based on Government Regulation No. 15/1972, then amanded by Government Regulation No. 2/1978, Government Regulation No. 36/1986, Government Regulation No. 30/2003 and Government Regulation No. 72/2010.
Since October 2. 2014, with new government regulations number 73/2014, Perhutani became the forest holding company with the merger of 5 (five) forestry companies named PT Inhutani I, PT Inhutani II, PT Inhutani III, PT Inhutani IV and PT Inhutani V as subsidiary companies.

Perum Perhutani adalah Badan Usaha Milik Negara pengelola hutan di pulau Jawa dan Madura yang memiliki peran strategis mendukung sistem kelestarian lingkungan, sosial budaya dan perekonomian masyarakat perhutanan nasional.
Perhutani andalan Pemerintah dalam penyelenggaraan kegiatan pengelolaan sumberdaya hutan yang dapat bersaing ditingkat internasional pada masa mendatang. Melalui transformasi perusahaan, manajemen Perhutani melakukan upaya perbaikan dan pengembangan bisnis secara terus menerus guna pelayanan bagi kemanfaatan umum sekaligus memupuk keuntungan berdasarkan prinsip pengelolaan perusahaan yang baik.
Perum Perhutani is State Owned Enterprise (SOE) forest which manages forest resources in Java and Madura, it has a strategic role to support environmental sustainability, social-cultural, and economy national society.
Perhutani has become government's key instruments in the implementation of forest management activities that can compete at the international level in the future.
Through its transformation program, the management decides to carry out improvements and continuous business development in order to fullfill the public benefit and concurrently gaining corporate profits based on the principles of good corporate governance.

berganti nama Ringyo Tyuoo Zimusyo (RTZ) setelah Hindia Belanda jatuh ke tangan Jepang.
Pasca Kemerdekaan RI 17 Agustus 1945, hak dan kewajiban pengelolaan hutan di Jawa Madura oleh Jawatan Kehutanan Hindia Belanda q.q den Dienst van het Boschwezen dilimpahkan ke Jawatan Kehutanan Republik Indonesia
1960 - 1961 Tahun 1960, dalam MPRS No. 11/MPRS/1960, industri
kehutanan ditetapkan sebagai Proyek B yaitu sumber penghasilan untuk membiayai proyek-proyek A (Tambahan Lembaran Negara RI No. 2551).
Pemerintah menerbitkan Peraturan Pemerintah Pengganti Undang- Undang Nomor 19 tahun 1960 tentang Perusahaan Negara.
Perubahan status Jawatan Kehutanan menjadi Perusahaan Negara, ditetapkan melalui Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 17-30 Tahun 1961 tentang ”Pembentukan Perusahaan-Perusahaan kehutanan

In 1930, teak forest management was transferred to “Djatibedrijf” teak forest company (forestry department). Directeur van Financien (Director of Finance Government of the Netherlands-East Indies) when it stated that the company stopped commercial aims.
In 1940, teak forest management “Djatibedrijf” was returned to forestry department.
In 1942, forestry department (i.c Boschwezen) renamed Ringyo Tyuoo Zimusyo (RTZ) after the Dutch Netherlands-East Indies handed over to japanese.
Post independence Day of Republic of Indonesia, August 17th, 1945, rights and obligations in Java Madura by the Dutch Administration's Forestry Department q.q den Dienst van het Boschwezen relinquish to the Forestry Department of the Republic of Indonesia.
In 1960, With MPRS Decree Number 11/MPRS/1960, forestry industry is set to be the Project B is a source of income to finance Projects A (Government State Gazette Number 2251)
The government issued Government Regulation in Lieu of Law Number 19/1960 on State Enterprise.
Forestry department changed become State Enterprise through Government Regulation Number 17-30 year 1961 on “Estabilishment of the State Forestry Enterprises (PERHUTANI)”

Program tahunan berbasis edukasi sastra ini telah menghasilkan penulis-penulis muda berbakat yang memiliki kepekaan, kesadaran dan cinta kelestarian hutan dan lingkungan di Indonesia serta berhasil dituangkan dalam bentuk cerita-cerita pendek.
Perhutani berkomitmen memberikan kontribusi bagi generasi muda yaitu lebih mengenal dan memahami perusahaan serta memiliki kesadaran untuk menjaga dan melestarikan sumberdaya hutan di Indonesia.

The annual program of literature-based education has produced young talented writers who has sensitivity, awareness and love of preservation of forests and the environment in Indonesia in short stories.
