CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background

The existence of movie has important role to the entertainment world. Since

Thomas Alva Edison has designed a tool to print and to produce the picture in 1887

until now. As a result, many movies with some genre that we have seen even more

than hundred of movies have released either in the television or in the theaters.

From the existence of the movie, many authors arise in the entertainment world.

There are many brilliant imaginations in the plot of the movie that drop in their story.

Starting from the daily human story until hyper-fiction story, where the author makes

own world that never have seen before.

Indeed, as a means of entertainment, movie also has negative and positive values

to the spectator who watches the movies. The negative effects always show when

they try to imitate the negative actions from the figure of the movies such as split on,

starring, kick someone or something that related to impolite manners. But the positive

effects can give us spirits and motivations to undergo our daily live.

As a mean of entertainment, movie has also important values to educate the

spectators and tries to tell us about the cultures, political issues and other aspects in

the world. According to Encyclopedia Americana (1977:505) Films can records

cultures, and they can treat social or political issues and other aspects of societies to

capture relationships difficult to communicate by other means.

Language of movie is one of important tools to build up the story also. Beside as

a means of conversation, language can be a tool for sending a message to the

spectators because by the language we can catch the manner of a person either he or

she has good and bad character in the movies.

The writer is interested to analyze the Favreaus movie Iron Man. This movie is

taken from the Marvels comic that commonly has heroic plot inside its story where

the hero has own character and the plot is sometimes difficult guessed by our mind.

From the explanation above, the writer would like to present a research under the

title The Analysis of the Main Characters in Jon Favreaus Movie Iron Man.

B. Problem Statement

Based on the background above, the writer limit the research questions as follows:

1. Who are the main characters in Jon Favreaus movie Iron Man?

2. What are the characterizations of the main characters in Jon Favreaus

movie Iron Man?

C. Objectives of the Research

Based on the problem statement above, objectives of the research were to find out:

1. The main characters in Jon Favreaus movie Iron Man

2. The characterizations in Jon Feavreaus movie Iron Man

The result of this research is expected useful to the writer himself and to anyone

who interesting to the movie and wants to add their knowledge about the movie,

especially in characters and characterization that use structuralism approach.

E. Scope of the Research

The scope of the research was limited to discuss the main characters and the

characterization in Jon Favreaus movie Iron Man.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A. Previous Finding

The writer presents a finding that related to this research from Hidayat (2005)

found that in his thesis The Analysis of the Main Characters in Paul W.S. Andersons

Movie Resident Evil.In this research, data were analyzed by using pure structuralism

approach. Pure structuralism is a method that considers literary work as an autonomy

work without any relation between the work and outer aspect. The result of this

research showed that every character has a different character.

Rahim (2006) found that in her thesis Love and Destiny in Peter Chelcsoms

Movie Serendipity. In her research, she used intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. It

should concern to research about the movie itself especially about love and destiny by

intrinsic and extrinsic approach.

B. Pertinent Ideas

A. Movie

1. Definition of Movie

According to International Dictionary of English Cambridge University press,

movie is a sequence of photographs projector onto a screen with sufficient rapidity of

to create the illusion of motion and continuity. Movie also called film, cinema, the

silver screen, moving picture, photoplays, picture show, flick, or properly motion

picture.

Motion picture is continuous sequence of transparent still photographs, in black or

white color, exposed onto long strips of specially treated cellulose acetate and

projected in rapid succession onto a screen to give the optical illusion of motion Bram

(1990:106).

Movie is a form of entertainment that enacts a story by sound and a sequence of

images giving the illusion of continuous movement.

Motion picture is a series of images recorded on film or tape that appear to move

when played through a film projector or a videotape player. Also known as movie,

film or cinema, the motion picture one of the most popular forms of art and

entertainment throughout the world (World Book Encyclopedia, 1990:846).

Along with the development of the science and technology, progress of movie

likewise. Its presence is marked by the appearance touching of the technology effects

and the sophisticated tools in which a movie can be seen more real with soft finishing

than a movie that appear early where the tools at the era is still simple. The finishing

of display color such as that, where the average of that movie at the year is still

performance in black and white.

In the entertainment world movie is one mean that has much fan, starting from the

children, youth, until the old age. The reason is movie has many genres that enable us

to choose whether film that interesting to watch. The stories are also, starting from

friendship, love, family and heroic stories. Even, humorous stories can laugh us are

available.

2. The Types of Movie

There are many types of the movie that always we are watching everyday. It can

be one of an attraction why they are attracted in watching the movie. And the author

always looking for the necessity of the public in order they can feel satisfaction.

Basically, movie can be divided into three parts.

a. Fiction Movie

Fiction movie is a movie that conveys the impossible story. The story has taken

by imagination the author only. There are many types of the fiction films that were

signed by certainly style, form and contents. They are drama movie, horror movie,

war movie, history movie, science fiction movie, comedy movie, action movie,

musical movie, and cowboy movie. And there is a combination between ones movie

to another movie. They are comedy action movie and drama history movie.

b. Non-Fiction movie

Non-fiction movie is the opposite from the fiction movie which is conveys the

factual story as the central plot. There are two types of non-fiction movie those are

factual movie and documenter movie. Basically, factual movies just show the fact but

it has given by other events in order more interesting. While the documenter movie is

a movie that emphasize the side of the new release of an actual event on TV

broadcast.

c. Animation and Experimental movie

Experimental movie is a movie that conveys the story in different way and

combine the science and technology as they device. The purposes are certainly

looking for new sensation of the movie and try to give a satisfaction to the public who

watching it. The animation movie is a movie that use immovable thing such as table,

chair and so on ultimately, can be moved by the animation technique.

B. Elements of Movie

1. Extrinsic elements

Extrinsic elements is the element that build up the movie from the outside, such as

People behind the scene, release time and duration, achievement, and genre of the

movie.

a. People Behind The Scene

Iron Man movie is adapted from the Marvel Comics with the same title. Marvel

Comics is a name of company in the U.S. that produces comic books and found in

1939 with the name Timely Publications and then changes become Atlas

Comics and finally in 1961 become Marvel Comics. This movie is directed by

Jon Favreau. The screenplays are written by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, Art

Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Stan Lee. The Producers are Victory Alonso and

Peter Billingsley.

b. Release Time and Duration

Iron Man movie is released on May 2, 2008 in United States. Running time is 126

minutes in one plate

c. Achievement

Iron Man is nominated for the Academy Awardfor Best Visual Effects and Best

Sound Editing. It was nominated for nine Saturn Awards, winning Best Science

Fiction Film, Best Director forFavreau and Best Actor forDowney, Jr. It was

nominated for Favorite Movie at the 2009Kids' Choice Awards.

d. Genre

Iron Man movie are action, adventure and sci-fi. Action movie is a movie that

content by some action within, adventure movie is a movie that content by some

adventure within and sci-fi (science fiction movie) is a movie that combined

between science and fiction which is this movie combined the technology that

sophisticated in the fiction movie.

2. Intrinsic elements

Intrinsic elements are the elements that build up the movie from the inside. They

are theme, plot, setting, atmosphere, point of view, and character. But they will not be

discussed any further later unless character and characterization.

a. Theme

Theme is underlying idea that the author presenting. Usually, many authors

are presenting their theme through careful selection. The theme in this Iron Man

movie is technology can make god and bad effect depend on the human that use

it.

b. Characterization

Characterization is depicting of clear images of a person. In the Iron Man

movie Robert Downey Jr. as Anthony "Tony" Stark / Iron Man is a billionaire

industrialist, genius inventor, and consummate playboy, he is CEO ofStark

Industries, a chief weapons manufacturer for the U.S. military. The son of a

Manhattan Project engineer, Howard Stark, he is an engineering prodigy, having

built a circuit board at four years old and an engine at six, as well as graduating

from MITsumma cum laude at the age of 17. He takes charge of Stark Industries

at the age of 21 from Obadiah Stane, who had been in control of the company

since Howard's death.

Terrence Howard as Lt. Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes is a friend of Stark's,

and the liaison between Stark Industries and the U.S. Air Force in the department

of acquisitions.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia "Pepper" Potts is Stark's personal secretary and

budding love interest.

Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane is Stark's business second-in-command. He is

become antagonist and the enemy of Iron Man later because their bad obsession.

their destinies. This movie takes the place in California.

d. Plot

Perrine (1959:61), defines plot as the sequence of incidents or events of

which a story is composed. In the plot of Iron Man movie there are many

actions which combined with the sophisticated technology where, Tony Stark is

the main character and Iron Man too. This part will find in the part of synopsis.

e. Point of view

Point of view is the way an author permits us to observe the story. It

determines how the readers know and find out what is happen in the movie. In

Iron Man the audience is placed in the position of a spectator. They must see

what the characters do and hear what they say.

C. CHARACTER

1. Definition of Character

According to Longman Dictionary (1995: 211), characters are:

The particular combination of qualities that makes someone a

particular kind of person.

The particular combination of features and qualities that make a

thing or place different from all other (Qualities of Something).

A quality that make someone or something special and interesting

(Interesting Quality).

A combination of courage and loyalty that are admired and regarded

as valuable (Moral Strength)

Talking about character is talking about a quality of person and quality of

everybody is different each other, because if the character of person is same certainly

the journey of human life will never have been interested anymore. From this case,

many movies arise with this issue and because it is element very important to built up

the movie.

Talking about character is talking about goodness and badness quality, so this

problem can not be separated by good and evil of the person. these problems are not

an ancient story anymore, because these have already became part of the humans life

in the world.

Good and evil quality is tendency talking about moral according to Morris

(1981:853). Moral is concerned with judgment of goodness and badness of human

action and character, pertaining to the discernment of good and evil. Design to teach

goodness or currentness of character and behavior, instructive of what is good and

bad.

Taking from the problems above, so that is why most authors write their work

about the human life and do not forget to give a variety of characters in their movie,

because the existence characters are very important things in order to develop its

movie. Without involvement of characters the movie cannot be formed as a complete

work. However, the development of the story is generally much determined by the

characters itself.

2. Types of Characters

According to (www.about .com) types of character are as follows:

Protagonist is a character in the movie which has a good attitude, act, feeling

and nature.

Antagonist is the opposite of the character in the movie which has a bad

attitude, act, feeling and nature.

A character foil is a character that not too different with the principal

character (protagonist). They are protagonist too but in the minor character.

A stereotype is usually shows an indication of poor quality in other word they

are like minority in a group, people with disabilities or women and boy that

vulnerable.

D. CHARACTERIZATION

According to Longman Dictionary (1995: 211), characterizations are:

The way in which a writer makes a person in a book, film, or play seem

like a real person.

The way in which the character of a real person or thing is described.

Thus, the conclusion of characterization is the way an author presents and reveals

the character through his words, acts, feeling, thought, behavior, and nature.

In the research of the characters, sometimes the authors want to explain the

personal quality their character to the spectator with some point of view. In this case,

there are some parts that we have to pay attention. According to Sumardjo (1984:32),

he divided characters personality in four levels. They are:

Physical Shape, in which contain skin, color and so on.

Social Degree, it deals with the characters job, religion, families and

environment situation.

Psychology Condition, it is actually the most, it can be seen from their

deeds, attitudes, aims, thoughts, way of taking decision, etc. and all of these must

be performed clearly firmly and completely.

Moral Condition, it is shown when the characters are facing critical

moments, and we know the characters are traitors, hypocrites, or honest, ones

from their deeds toward the critical moments.

E. DESCRIPTIVE METHOD

Descriptive method is a method that intends to describe everything related to the

topic of the research. In this case of the movie, the writer will read the script of the

movie carefully to find out the main characters and the characterization and collects

some related literature to support the object that will be analyzed.

F. STRUCTURALISM APPROACH

According to Semi in his book Metode Penelitian Sastra (1990:67).

Pendekatan structural sering juga dinamakan pendekatan objektif, pedekatanformal, atau pendekatan analitik, bertolak dari asumsi dasar bahwa karya satra

sebagai karya kreatif memiliki otonomi penuh yang harus dilihat sebagai suatu sosok

yang berdiri sendiri terlepas dari hal-hal lain yang berada di luar dari dirinya. Bila

hendak dikaji atau diteliti, maka yang harus dikaji atau diteliti adalah aspek yangmembangun karya tersebut seperti tema, alur, latar, penokohan, gaya penulisan, gaya

bahasa, serta hubungan harmonis antar aspek yang mampu membuatnya menjadi

sebuah karya sastra. Hal-hal yang bersifat ekstrinsik seperti penulis, pembaca, atau

lingkungan sosial budaya harus dikesampingkan, karena ia tidak punya kaitanlangsung struktur karya sastra tersebut.

Structuralism approach are also often called objective approach, formal approach

or analytic approach taking from the basic assumption that literary work as creative

work has full of autonomy that must be seen as a independent apart from the other

things that out of them. If you want to investigate or research, the problems that you

must investigate or research are the building work aspects such as: theme, plot,

background, characterization, style of writing, diction and the harmonic relationship

among the aspects that can make it becomes a literary work. The extrinsic qualities

such as: writer, reader or sociocultural environment must be ignored because it has

not direct connection with the structure of that literary work.

Thus, structuralism approach is approach to the work as one that has autonomy

and independent work. The important one is you must research the intrinsic elements

of the work itself such as: theme, plot, setting, and characterization. You do not need

research the extrinsic elements, because it has not direct connection with that work.

From the statements above, we can see that pure structuralism tends to the

intrinsic elements in a work which build the work inside. Thus, all elements that

outside from the work just leave behind and in this research the writers just focus in

main characters and characterizations in the movie Iron Man.

G. BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR

According to (www.imdb.com) Jonathan Kolia Favreau was born in October 19,

1966 Flushing, New York, U.S, the son of Madeleine, a schoolteacher who died of

leukemia in 1978, and Charles Favreau, a special educationteacher. His father was an

Italian AmericanCatholic and his mother was Jewish. He graduated from the Bronx

High School of Science in 1984 and attended Queens College from 1984 to 1987,

before dropping out. He briefly worked for Bear Stearns on Wall Streetbefore

returning to Queens College for a semester in early 1988. He dropped out of college

for good (a few credits shy of completing his degree) and in the summer of 1988,

moved to Chicago to pursue a career in comedy. He performed at several Chicago

improvisational theaters, including the ImprovOlympic and the Improv Institute.

While in Chicago, Favreau landed his first film role alongside Sean Astin as the

pudgy tutor D-Bob in the classic sleeper hit Rudy (1993). Favreau met Vince Vaughn

who also played a small role in this filmduring shooting. The next year, he

appeared in the college film PCU alongside Jeremy Piven, and also stepped into the

world of television in the 1994 episode of Seinfeld titled "The Fire" as Eric the

Clown. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he made his breakthrough in 1996 as

an actor-screenwriter with the film Swingers, which was Vaughn's breakthrough role

as the glib and extremely confident Trent Walker, a perfect foil to Favreau's

portraying Pete Becker, whom Monica dates for several episodes, and who competes

in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

He rejoined Piven in 1998 as part of Very Bad Things (1998). In 1999 he

starred in Rocky Marciano, based on the life of the only undefeated world

heavyweight champion in the world. He later appeared in Love & Sex (2000), co-

starring Famke Janssen. Favreau got some screen time as lawyerFoggy Nelson in the

2003 movie Daredevil (2003) (considerably more in the Director's Cut version). In

2003 he also starred in The Big Empty, directed by Steve Anderson. His character

was John Person, an out of work actor given a strange mission to deliver a blue

suitcase to a man named Cowboyin the desert. Earlier, Favreau appeared in 2000's

The Replacements as maniacal linebacker Daniel Bateman. He was a guest-director

for an episode of the college dramedyUndeclared in 2001.

In 2000, he played himself in a Sopranosepisode as a Hollywood director who

feigns interest in developing mob associate Christopher Moltisanti's execrable

screenplay in order to collect material for his own screenplay. In 2001, he made his

(film) directorial debut with another self-penned screenplay, Made. Made once again

According to (www.imdb.com) this science fiction movie is talking about a

factory named Stark Industries which moved in making weapons, missiles, booms,

rockets and robots. There are many names in this movie actually but the important

main characters in this movie only 4, they are: Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, Colonel

James Rhodey and Obadiah Stane. One day Tony Stark gambles at a Las Vegas

casino, leaving his deceased father's friend and business partner, Obadiah Stane, to

accept a prestigious award for him. As Stark leaves the casino with his entourage, he

is approached by reporter Christine Everhart, whom he charms into a one-night stand

at his Malibu house. When she awakens the next morning, Stark is gone and she is

coldly greeted and helped on the way by Pepper Potts, his personal assistant.

Stark flies off to war-torn Afghanistan with his friend and company military

liaison, Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes, for a demonstration of Stark Industries'

new weapon, the "Jericho" cluster missile. On the way back, however, his military

convoy is attacked. In the firefight, his escort is wiped out and Stark himself is

knocked unconscious by one of his own company's bombs.

Waking up in an Afghan cave, he discovers an electromagnet embedded in his

chest, placed there by fellow captive Dr. Yinsen. Powered by a car battery, it keeps

shrapnel from working its way to his heart and killing him. Stark has been captured

by a terrorist group known as the Ten Rings, whose leader, Raza, orders Stark to

build a Jericho missile for him.

Instead, during his three months of captivity, he and Yinsen begin secretly

building a crude suit of armor, powered by a miniature "arc reactor." Finally, the

terrorists grow impatient and give Stark 24 hours to finish. Unfortunately, the

terrorists become suspicious of their activities before the suit is fully activated, so

Yinsen makes a suicidal attack in a desperate bid to buy time. Once the armor is

ready, Stark charges through the caves. Near the entrance, a dying Yinsen tells him

not to waste his life. Forever grateful to Yinsen, Stark burns all the munitions the

terrorists have accumulated and then flies away, only to crash in the desert. Stark

survives, but his suit is destroyed. After being rescued by Rhodes, Stark announces at

a press conference that his company will no longer manufacture weapons. Stane tells

him shortly thereafter that his decision is being blocked by the board of directors of

Stark Industries.

Stark focuses his energies on building a better version of his power suit, while

making an improved arc reactorfor his chest. Once the new reactor replaces the old

one, Potts gives Stark a gift: his first miniature reactor encased in glass and bearing

the inscription, "Proof that Tony Stark has a heart". During Stark's first public

appearance since his return, he spots Potts wearing a dress and realizes that he has

romantic feelings for his assistant. As they are about to share a kiss, Potts interrupts

them by asking for a martini.

While ordering the drinks, Stark is accosted by Everhart, who shows him pictures

of Stark Industries weapons, including Jericho missiles, recently delivered to

insurgents. He realizes that Stane has been supplying both the Americans and their

enemies, and attempting to remove Stark from power. Enraged, Stark dons the power

suit, flies to Afghanistan and rescues Gulmira, Yinsen's village, from the Ten Rings.

While leaving, Stark attracts the attention of the United States Air Force, which

dispatches two F-22 Raptors to try to identify the mysterious flying object. Rhodes is

consulted about the nature of the object, but cannot offer help, and the fighters are

ordered to destroy the target. During the resulting dogfight, Stark has time to reveal to

Rhodes that he is the unidentified target. One of the planes is accidentally destroyed

when it collides with Stark. The pilot ejects, but his parachute does not deploy, so

Stark rescues him before escaping.

Stark sends Potts to hackinto the company computer system. She discovers that

Stane hired the Ten Rings to kill Stark. The group reneged on the deal upon

discovering who the target was, which ultimately seals their fate when Stane has them

eliminated later. She also learns Stane has recovered the pieces of the original power

suit and reverse-engineered his own version, one much larger and more powerful than

Stark's. As she leaves Stane's office, she meets Agent Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D., a

newly-establishedcounter-terrorism government agency, who has been accosting her

and Stark about an interview concerning Stark's escape from the Ten Rings.

After she leaves, Stane discovers what she has done. Stane goes to his group of

scientists, and is angered when they state that they cannot duplicate the arc reactor

technology that Tony created. Later that evening, Stane ambushes Stark in his house,

using a Stark Industries device to temporarily paralyze him. While revealing his plan

to take over Stark Industries, Stane removes the arc reactor from Stark's chest and

leaves him to die. However, Stark gets to Potts' gift and re-installs his original

reactor. Meanwhile, Stane returns to Stark Enterprises where SHIELD agents, guided

by Potts, break in to arrest him, only to be attacked by Stane in the now functional

Iron Mongerarmor.

Although his original reactor is underpowered for his latest armor, Stark races to

the rescue, and a battle erupts between him and Stane. Finding himself outmatched,

Stark lures Stane atop the Stark Industries building. With no power left, Stark

instructs Potts to overload the full-sized reactor in the building. This unleashes a

massive electrical surge that knocks Stane unconscious and sends him falling through

the ceiling into the reactor itself, apparently incinerating him.

The next day, it is revealed that the press has dubbed Stark's alter ego "Iron Man".

Rhodes gives reporters a false explanation of what happened. Before speaking, Stark

briefly makes an attempt to establish a romantic relationship with Potts, but is put on

hold. During the press conference, Stark starts to tell the cover story given to him by

S.H.I.E.L.D., but then instead announces openly that he is Iron Man.

a. Tony Stark is a protagonist character. He has genius, big sense of humor,

b. Colonel James Rhodey is a foil character. He has disciplinary, prestigious,

serious and careful person it can be seen when he was talking with anyone.

c. Pepper Potts is a protagonist character. She is a typical of very busy woman,

she has vulnerable to get worry, melancholic, and panicky but she always

eager to know and cares with other people especially to Tony Stark.

characters and human traits that can be found. Besides it has interesting plot the

qualities of the person such as protagonist, antagonist until foil character are

available in this story.

In the movie of Iron Man it is not just tell us about the manufacturer of

weapons and missiles but trying to tell us how we can use our science in order to

useful for the next generation and for human kind in the world not destroy them

with our sciences.

In this movie is also trying to tell us how we can solve the troubles with using

our sciences, our thought and our brain which indeed created to face about it.

Then in this movie is trying to teach us to be patient in facing some of trouble

because the keys to settle the troubles are patient, pray and effort.

Actually there are still many interesting parts in the movie that can we

research especially to the student of English Literature Department such as plot,

theme, setting, moral values, culture values, heroic values and so on that can not

be separated by our life because the majority of them are reflection from the story

Jarvis : The compression in cylinder three appears to be low.

Pepper : Your flight was scheduled to leave an hour and a half ago.

Tony : Thats funny, I thought with it being my plane and all, that it would justwait for m to get there.
