Reactions 1450 - 4 May 2013 S Peganum harmala Various toxicities: 7 case reports A retrospective study identified five female and two male patients, aged 3 months–60 years, who developed various toxicities due to Peganum harmala poisoning and subsequently died [dosages not stated; not all indications stated; durations of treatment to reactions onsets not clearly stated]. All the patients received oral Peganum harmala. Reasons for ingesting the product included abortion, suicide, or therapeutic [indications not specified]. The time which elapsed from the time of poisoning until the patient was seen by medical staff varied from 12–160 [units not stated]. Symptoms included shock, anuria, convulsions, myoclonus, agitation, excitation, renal failure, coma, vomiting, jaundice, respiratory depression, hallucinations, collapse, vertigo, and oliguria. All seven patients underwent symptomatic treatment and medical observation but all died. Author comment: Peganum harmala poisoning can be serious or even fatal. Achour S, et al.
