CorruptionDo you know what the meaning of corruption is? What is the relation between money

and corruption? Well, corruption is common everywhere in the world, even in the United States. It is just a matter of intensity. However, it is quite shocking when one reliable survey claims

Jakarta as the most corrupt place in Indonesia. The survey has made me sad, actually, because I stay and earn a living here in the capital.

As most people know, Tanjung Priok port smuggling is not a new thing at all. Entrepreneurs whowant to minimize their tax payments tend to do such a thing more often. They even bribe theofficials.

Well, I think the measures taken so far to overcome the problem by punishing thecorruptors is still not far enough. We have to prevent the younger generations from getting a bad

mentality caused by corruption.I believe we should start at the earliest stages in school and I think everyone should be

involved in the effort to eradicate corruption. We must not make any distinction.

    The Effects of Acid Soil

Soils with a pH of less than 7.0 are acid. When soil pH falls below 5.5, plant growth isaffected. Crop yields decrease, reducing productivity.

Soils provide water and nutrients for plant growth and development. Essential plantnutrients include phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium and sulfur. Plants require other elements suchas molybdenum, in smaller quantities. Some elements, such as aluminum and manganese, aretoxic to plants.

Nutrients become available to plants when they are dissolved in water. Plants are able totake up phosphate, nitrate, potassium and sulfate ions in solution.

The solubility of nutrients changes with pH. In acid soils (low pH), molybdenumbecomes less soluble and aluminum becomes more soluble. Therefore, either a deficiency of molybdenum or too much aluminium may affect plant growth.

    6

Both crop and pasture plants are affected by acid soils. There may be a range of symptoms. Crops and pastures may be poorly established resulting in patchy and uneven growth.Plant leaves may go yellow and die at the tips. The root system of the plant may be stunted.Crops may yield less.

Plants vary in their sensitivity to low pH. Canola and Lucerne are very sensitive to acidsoils so do not grow well. Lupins and triticale are tolerant to soils of low pH so they still performwell.

Land can become unproductive if acid soil is left untreated. Incorporating lime into thesoil raises the pH. Therefore, liming soil can reverse the effects of acid soil on plants and return apaddock to productivity.

    13. What kind of the text is it?

    a. analytical exposition

    b. hortatory exposition

    c. explanation

    d. report

    e. description

    14. The nutrients that have good effect for the plants growth are below, except....

    a. phosphate

    b. nitrate

    c. potassium

    d. aluminium

    e. sulfate

    Convenience or Care?

When something issued by someone, we say it has been consumed. We as consumers usemany things, both natural and processed. We consume more of the Earths resources than other animals do and, as a result, we cause problems for the environment.

    7

  • 8/7/2019 Ingg-Soal SKL edt

    8/14

Like all animals, we need clean air and water, food and shelter for survival. Unlike other animals, however, we have certain want. These items are not necessary for our survival, butthat we want because they make our lives easier or more enjoyable.

Environments claim that a great deal of waste is created by both the production and the

consumption of these items or product. Disposable products, such as pens, take away foodcontainers, plates, shavers and cutlery, are made using the Earths resources. When theseproducts are thrown away, the resources are lost.

Another example of waste is the unnecessary packaging on many products. The materialis often not recycled and used again.

Throwing thing away also increases pollution. The amount of disposable plastic litter thatends up in waterways is a serious problem. When this waste reaches the oceans, it can killmarine life.

Industrialists counter these arguments with their own point of view. They claim thatconsumers expect to be able to purchase food which is attractively presented, prepackaged toextent its life and easy to store. In a busy society, convenience is a priority. Products that makelife easier, era in demand. Industrialists argue that they cater to this perceived need.

Packaging is also big business and provides jobs for many people who might otherwisebe unemployed and a burden to society.

Environmentalist declare that for thousands of year, people survived perfectly well withre-usable products. However, people of the twenty-first century have become used to wing in a

thrown-away society. It is up to each one of us to dispose of waste products carefully, recycleas much as possible and to reduce the stress on our environment. Think when buying pre-packaged goods and consider whether the same products can be bought without the extrawrappings. Lets make the best of what we have.

    15. Which of statements is true based on the text?

    a. Environments are on the pro side.

    b. Environments are on the contra side.

    c. Industrialists are on the contra side.d. Both environments and industrialists are on the same side.

    e. The writer agrees with the environments.
