Student ProfileJulian Clavijo – Master of Arts (Art in Public Space)

I wanted to create big art. Art in public spaces: the big sculptures, the big monuments, the big, intricate architectural facades, facades that mean something, the big murals.

At RMIT, they teach you how to think and how to work your way through to produce your art. There is a rulebook of how public art is delivered and RMIT gives you the approaches of how things need to be presented.

Rankings and Awards

Student ProfileJin Hu – Master of Information Technology

RMIT has a great reputation of providing industry connections, internship opportunities and exposure to the job market prior to graduation. I learnt a lot of valuable skills throughout my studies including programming, group work, time management and the ability to work under pressure.

I recently completed my postgraduate project where my team and I worked with a financial company in Melbourne to help them build their website. The entire semester was full of dealing with clients, working in a team, solving problems, solving new problems and so on. The experience was invaluable as we could not have learnt the same skills sitting in a lecture theatre.

I never thought there were opportunities to work as a teacher in such unique learning environments. It came as a surprise to me to be able to work as a teacher at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

It’s been an absolute joy to work at the hospital and assist in a small way that creates an environment where the children feel normal in a very abnormal situation.

Student ProfileWasa Sibiya – Master of Environmental Science and Technology, Senior tutor at University of Goroka, Papua New Guinea

RMIT has strong industry connections and courses are very practical. Lecturers are highly educated and dedicated to their profession. They have strong industry backgrounds and are excited to share their experiences, knowledge, ideas with us. I would definitely recommend RMIT to others.

Sustainable Urban Precincts Program

In 2014, RMIT launched a $98 million Sustainable Urban Precincts Program across all Melbourne campuses. The aim of the project is to reduce electricity use over eight years by an estimated 239 million kilowatt hours, leading to a 30,000-tonne reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of the program, $4.8 million in funding will support teaching and research in sustainability, including 10 PhD scholarships.

For more information, visitrmit.edu.au/study-with-us/ environment-and-sustainability

Our environment and planning programs include hands-on experience through field studies and excursions, conducted in association with industry, government and environmental agencies.

Whether it’s assisting communities with environmental management or protecting the biodiversity of marine life in our coastal areas, you’ll be able to get professional experience on real projects across the globe.

Practical projects – Lizard Island Field Project and Vietnam Project

RMIT students have the opportunity to undertake practical field work at the Lizard Island Research Station, 270 kilometres north of Cairns. Students get the opportunity to learn how to conduct real-life surveys in real-life conditions, by collecting data, identifying species, and monitoring environmental changes.

Final year environment students can take a two-week intensive field research project in Vietnam where they investigate urban development and provide sustainability recommendations to local non-profit organisations and government agencies.

Student ProfileThi Ngoc Anh Pham – PhD (Global, Urban & Social Studies)

I chose RMIT to do my PhD project for two reasons: the expertise of my supervisor, and the convenience of the city campus, plus the short travel time allows me to better focus on my study.

Alumni ProfileZheng (Charissa) Gong – Master of Translating and Interpreting, Sales and Marketing Manager at Servcorp, China

English is like a tool. It’s not just a language or something that you can rely on to build your career. I think it’s more like a key to the world. I now work as Sales and Marketing Manager for an Australian company called Servcorp in Shanghai. Living in Australia for three years, I learned how to interact with people from different cultures and how to put forward my ideas.

I was privileged to choose RMIT as it has a well-known reputation for taking good care of international students and considering the big move from another country they are doing a good job.

International and Community Services ResearchLanguage, Communication and Culture

RMIT University’s language, communication and culture research is internationally recognised with a focus on the interdisciplinary fields of digital ethnography, journalism, critical, social and political communication.

Our cross-cultural, interdisciplinary and multi-sited research concentrates on digital practice and communication theory and analysis, especially focusing on Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific

region.

The research culture in this field incorporates and supports internationally recognised academics and HDR candidates working across a range of applied, industry-focussed and theoretically challenging projects in such areas as emerging media practice, digital ethnography and critical studies of transnationalism, Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. This research emphasis is supported by such vibrant and widely recognised focal points as

— The Centre for Communication, Politics and Culture (CPC)

— The Digital Ethnography Research Centre (DERC)

Research Centres and Alliances

Researchers in Language, Communication and Culture collaborate through a number of research centres, groups and alliances including:

— The Centre for Art, Society and Transformation (CAST) researches how art transforms human communities within an age of rapid urbanisation and globalisation.

— The Centre for Game Design Research fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to understand games as creative, social and cultural artefacts and address real world problems through the creation of games and playful design interventions.

— The Non/fiction Lab is an interdisciplinary research centre for creative and critical practice that investigates approaches to nonfiction, its forms and its frames.

— The Screen Cultures Research Group unites academics and industry practitioners to interrogate the rapidly changing screen cultures environment across film and television, screenwriting, digital media and design.

— Exertion Games Lab investigates the future of games. Researchers engage in research-through-design and investigate the resulting human-computer interactions.

— Researchers in the Games and Experimental Entertainment Laboratory (GEElab) conduct applied research at the intersections of game design and game thinking, as well as with novel types of engagement in non-entertainment contexts.

— The Creative interventions, Art and Rehabilitative Technology (CiART) Lab aims to forge new ground in design research and creative practice.

Alumni ProfileCecilia Nguyen – Bachelor of Arts (Criminal Justice Administration) and Master of Justice and Criminology

During my time at RMIT, I was fortunate to receive placements with state and federal police forces, which set the foundation for my future career. I also represented RMIT at the University Games, which was definitely a highlight of my university experience. I got to travel to different cities around Australia to compete, play my favourite sport and meet new friends from other courses.

Centre for Innovative Justice The Centre for Innovative Justice was launched in March 2013 with former Attorney-General of Victoria and Deputy Premier Rob Hulls appointed Inaugural Director.

The Mission of the Centre is to research, develop, teach and promote innovative ways of delivering justice. The Centre is dedicated to finding innovative solutions to complex problems and developing practical ways to improve the justice system.

Students are provided with practical exposure to the process of law reform to equip them to use their legal training to advocate for and achieve change. Students gain insight into the daily work of courts and tribunals by shadowing lawyers, magistrates, judges and tribunal members.

Student ProfileTravis Lacy – Exchange student from Denmark

I chose RMIT over other universities, because of its good reputation and many opportunities within my line of work and studies. I would highly recommend both RMIT and spending a semester abroad. Experiencing another culture and studying in a new environment is just so much fun. You will gain so much personally, but it is also a good thing for your future career and resume.

Student ProfileJoran Mandik – Exchange student from Technische Universität Berlin, Germany

Exchange to Australia will look good on my CV. As an urban planner it is really interesting to see planning regulations and practices from abroad and compare them to what’s happening at home.

RMIT provides an inspiring environment and I feel very well looked after while studying here. I think anyone would benefit from a semester or more at RMIT..
