Chinese scholars have classified dragons in diverse systems. For instance, Emperor Huizong of Songcanonized

    five colored dragons as "kings".

The Azure Dragon [Qinglong] spirits, most compassionate kings.

The Vermillion Dragon [Zhulong] spirits, kings that bestow blessings on lakes.

The Yellow Dragon [Huanglong] spirits, kings that favorably hear all petitions.

The White Dragon [Bailong] spirits, virtuous and pure kings.

The Black Dragon [Xuanlong] spirits, kings dwelling in the depths of the mystic waters.[15]

The numbernineis special inChinaas it is the largest possible single digit, and Chinese dragons are frequently

connected with it. For example, a Chinese dragon is normally described in terms of nine attributes and usually

has 117 (9x13) scales - 81 (9x9) Yang and 36 (9x4) Yin. This is also why there are nine forms of the dragon and

the dragon has nine offspring (seeClassical depictionsabove). The "Nine Dragon Wall" is a screen wall with

images of nine different dragons, and is found in imperial Chinese palaces and gardens. As nine was considered

the number of the emperor, only the most senior officials were allowed to wear nine dragons on their robes

and then only with the robe completely covered with surcoats. Lower-ranking officials had eight or five dragons

on their robes, again covered with surcoats; even the emperor himself wore his dragon robe with one of its nine

    dragons hidden from view.

There are a number of places inChinacalled "Nine Dragons", the most famous beingKowloon(in Cantonese)inHong Kong. The part of theMekongin Vietnam is known asCu Long, with the same meaning.

Each of these mythological creatures has also been synthesized into the5 element system:

Azure Dragon of the East: Wood

Vermilion Bird of the South: Fire

White Tiger of the West: Metal

Black Tortoise of the North: Water

Additionally, there is a fifth legendary beast, Hung-lng (), or theYellow Dragon of the Center. Thecardinal

directionassociated with this animal is "center," and its element is Earth.[2]

    [edit]Correspondence with the Four Seasons

The four legendary beasts (excluding Hung-lng; see above) represent a season each. The seasons they

    represent are as follows:

Azure Dragon of the East: Spring

Vermilion Bird of the South: Summer

White Tiger of the West: Autumn

Black Tortoise of the North: Winter

    Rain dragons

"All traditions about Ying-lung are vague", writes Eberhard (1968:350-351). Although the legendary Yinglong

dragon helped Yu to control floods, "Y was frequently bothered by dragons", most notably the flood-deity Gong

Gong's minister Xiang Liu , who "had a human face, but a snake body with nine heads." Eberhard cites Sun

Jiayi's identification of Xiang Liu as aneel(manyu), which is important in flood myths ofTaiwanese

aborigines. According to early commentaries, Yinglong

who made the beds of rivers by waggling his tail in the muddy soil and thus helped Y to regulate the f lood, was

a kind of eel, too. Hsiang-liu stopped the water with his body; Ying-lung with his tail made it run freely, just as

Y's father Kun stopped the water, while Y made it run.

He cites legends describing Gun as "the naked one" and "dark fish"; both names that "fit quite well the eel."Eberhard concludes that Yinglong and the mythic elements about Yu "testify to the connection between Y and

the cultures of the south, which differ from Y myths of theBa culture". Carr (1990:106) citesChen Mengjia's

hypothesis, based on studies ofShang Dynastyoracle bones, that Yinglong was originally associated with

    the niqiu"loach".

Yinglong representations were anciently used in rain-magic ceremonies, where Eberhard (1968:247-248) says,

"the most important animal is always a dragon made of clay". Besides controlling rain and drought, the Yinglong

Responsive Dragon did something else: "With his tail he drew lines in the earth and thus created the rivers In

other words, the dragon made the waterways the most important thing for all cultivators of rice.
