    Chapter NineteenVaräha Kills Hiraëyäkña

    Hearin& the sincere+ s,eet ,)rds )- rahmä+ the /)rdsmiled and accepted th)se ,)rds ,ith a l)vin& &lance.

     The Nineteenth Chapter describes how, after the demon could notkill him by using his illusory powers, the Lord withdrew his weaponand killed him with his hands.

    Brahmä’s words were truthful nirvyaléka!, since he said that he hadgi"en a boon to the demon. #B $.%&.''! (is words were )lled withlo"e amåtam! since he told the Lord to kill the demon before thetwilight. #B $.%&.'*! This indicates that those words were relishedby the Lord. The Lord smiled. +ut of  prema for me, one can lose allmemory, since Brahmä teaches me, the personi)cation of time, tochoose the correct time to kill the demon. The Lord accepted thosewords with a glance )lled with lo"e. By this the Lord indicates -es,what you say is true. /ust as you instruct, 0 will kill the demon now.

    (owe"er, 0 will kill him in the e"ening today, since 0 will fully satisfymyself with )ghting him.1

    Mukhataù means -in front of.1 (e struck him on the lower cheekhanau!.  Akñajaù means -he who appeared from Brahmä’s nose.1

     The club of the Lord sä! struck by the club of the demon, fell from

    the hand of the Lord and rolling about, fell to the earth and glowed. This falling of the Lord’s club tat ! was most astonishing.

    || 3.19.4||sa tadä la'dha%t!rth) *pina 'a'ädhe niräyudham

    mänayan sa m"dhe dharma#viñvaksena# prak)payan

    h)u&h the dem)n n), had the )pp)rtunity+ he did n)tstrike the /)rd ,h) ,as ,ith)ut a ,eap)n. He respected therules )- 5&htin& and made the /)rd an&ry 'y this.

     Though the demon had the opportunity he did not strike the Lord. The reason is gi"en. (e accepted the rules of )ghting. (e made theLord angry by this. -Because you know that 0 am in trouble, bymaking my club fall by the strength of your arms, you display yoursense of dharma, and do not strike me. #ee2 0n a moment’s time, 0will take the club along with your life21

    7hen the clu' -ell -r)m his hand and the devatäs cried )utin distress+ the /)rd respected the pr)per 'ehavi)ur )- thedem)n and remem'ered his cakra as ,ell as his clu'.

    3hen the club fell for his hand, it is not the same as his bow falling

    from his hand in the )ght with 4äl"a, where other moti"es areinferred. Because (irayäk5a was actually an associate of the Lord,and thus e6ual to the Lord, they had e6ual strength. Thus, it waspossible for the club to fall from the hand of the Lord. 3ithout e6ualstrength, there would be no pleasure in )ghting. Thus this actionincreased the enthusiasm of the Lord to )ght. 0t is thus an ornamentof the Lord, not a fault, since the Lord, )lled with lo"e for hisde"otee, many times accepts defeat at the hands of the de"otee.

     This is indicated in the ne7t "erse, which e7plains that the Lordrecogni8ed his de"otee. The Lord remembered his cakra  and

    pre"ious to that, he remembered his club. That is indicated by theword ca.

     The Lord cut up the trident which, radiating great light within itself,e"en lit up the sky, or which radiated light which spread in the sky,with the sharp blade of his cakra, aru?a had already rearu?a, who was carryingthe pot of nectar, ga"e up one of his wings in order to protect theinfallibility of the thunderbolt employed by 0ndra. The tridentappeared like the already cut wing of >aru?a, lighting up the sky.

    7hen the trident ,as split int) many pieces 'y the cakra+Hiraëyäkña r)ared l)udly+ appr)ached the /)rd+ struck the/)rd*s 'r)ad chest+ the residence )- /akñm!+ ,ith his hard5st+ and disappeared.

    #åkne  means split. #triking the Lord on the chest andunderstanding that it was impossible to gain "ictory by direct

    )ghting, he utili8ed his illusory powers and disappeared.

    9rom this description it is understood that the Lord, absorbed in thepleasure of )ghting, went beyond the auspicious time indicated byBrahmä.

    witches.

     Though the demon put the Lord between his arms and s6uee8edupaghamänaù!, he saw that the Lord was situated beyond hisgrasp.

    $am  refers the demon. #rästram  is Aträsura and marutpati  is

    0ndra.

    0n this "erse it mentions that the Lord’s foot struck the demon. 0n"erse '@ it mentions that the hand of the Lord struck the demon.#ince the two front feet of the boar are also his hands there is nocontradiction.

    0uñkara-viñ1ara means Brahmä, whose seat is a lotus.

    not go beyond that.1 +r it can mean -0 ha"e gained the meaning of what the guru said uktam!, and then anu!, 0 ha"e spoken avädi! itto you.1 + Aidura2 (ow are the acti"ities recogni8ed 0n thatacti"ity, the demon was killed by the Lord in battle.
