DINAMIKA POPULASI Rhinoclavis sinensis GMELIN 1791
(GASTROPODA: CERITHIIDAE) DI PANTAI KRAKAL, YOGYAKARTA
RINGKASAN
kelompok perajin pembuat kerajinan berbahan cangkang, diperjualbelikan
Pantai Krakal Yogyakarta meliputi:
1. Karakteristik populasi seperti cacah populasi, biomasa, pola reproduksi, umur,

2005) ditimbang. Indek Gonad Somatik dihitung, dibuat grafik dan dianalisis
secara deskriptif.
2. Evaluasi Umur Operkulum. Prosedur histologi penentuan umur ini mengikuti
(Richardson dkk. 2005a, Richardson dkk. 2005b) yang dimodifikasi pada
operkulum.
matang kelamin siput betina.
3. Guna mendapatkan persamaan pertumbuhan Von Bertalanffy Growth Formula
(VBGF) Lt = L(1-e-K(t-to)) (1) Dibutuhkan analisis Elefan I dan pencarian nilai to
4. Laju Pertumbuhan kemudian dapat dihitung menggunakan persamaan
L/t=(L(t+t) L(t)/t dan dari nilai kurvatur (K) VBGF per tahun dan empat
tahun.
.
7. Tahap kedua adalah memperkirakan Mortalitas. Ada dua metoda yang saling
melengkapi yang digunakan dalam memperkirakan mortalitas:
a. Length Converted Catch Curve menggunakan persamaan:
Ln (Ni/ti) = a +b.ti
suhu rerata.
-
142
8. Berikutnya menggunakan persamaan inversi VBGF, t(L) = to (1/K*ln(1-L/L)),
maka parameter kondisi awal to

kemudian tiap penambahan umur setahun berukuran 25,2 mm, 31,8 mm, 36,0 mm,
38,8 mm.
produksi.

POPULATION DYNAMICS OF Rhinoclavis sinensis, GMELIN 1791
(GASTROPODA: CERITHIIDAE) AT KRAKAL BEACH, YOGYAKARTA
SUMMARY
Coastal areas are very vulnerable to anthropogenic influences. The fact that
community of snails was harvested continuously, the presence of handicraft maker
group, sold at least at about three tourist beaches in Yogyakarta, harvested size
were more on premature snails, and was exported to other countries showed the
anthropogenic impact on the intertidal ecosystem of Krakal Beach. For those
reasons it is important to make an assessment to the recent population condition,
specifically for R. sinensis population so that for the near future a recommendation
can be made for harvesting management purposes.
This research aims to understand basic information data on Gastropods
population at Krakal Beach Yogyakarta, namely:
1. Population characteristics: population numbers, biomass, reproduction pattern,
age or stage, sex ratio and life span of R. sinensis temporarily, during 2005-
2008.
2. Population processes: population growth, growth rate, recruitment pattern,
changes in age distribution, mortality (natural mortality and fishing mortality) of R.
sinensis.
3. Stock status and the effect of population harvesting of R. sinensis.

Research on Gastropods and Mollusks are just recently developed in
Indonesia, by the presence of National Seminar in Mollusks 1st and 2nd, on 2007
and 2009. Although the biodiversity and community study topics have been initialized
beforehand. Those researches were done separately, uncontinuous and stress on
species which is abundance in numbers and economically important. Applied
research found so far such as Tuahato and Lokollo (2009) that learned the use of
natural marine resources by woman from Ameth, Maluku; Andamari (2007) who
inventoried bivalves and snails sold in Denpasar, Bali; Boneka et.al. (2009) who
inventoried snails consumed at Talaud Island, Sulut. Meanwhile, Hartoto et.al.
(2009) had proposed model for conservation and co-management of Dog Conch
(Strombus turturella) in the context of Indonesian culture. Apparently clear from the
observation that there are many aspects have not been studying yet, and long term
population study on Gastropods has not became main stream research study topics
in Indonesia yet.
The size of stock is influence by growth (G), recruit (R), and mortality (natural
(M) and fishing (F) mortality). Population will increase by reproduction which
increase the number of individual or biomass is increase by growth and addition of
new individual. In reverse populations biomass and numbers will decrease by
natural and fishing mortality. Naturally there will be balance between growth and
mortality, and the density will be fluctuating on its average. High fishing result in
decreasing the number of adults affecting in the unavailability of new recruits replace
the number catches. Fishing continuously in high intensity will result on decrease of
the number of population in which finally result in rarity of the population.

Analysis stock used was analytic model based on detail description of stock
and many people like this model because of its quality and quantity of the input data.
Analytic model need the availability of age composition, this can be understand in
this statement:
a. When there are only a few number of old fish, then the stock has been over fished
and the pressure of fishing shall be decreased.
b. When there are so many old fish, then the stock is under fished and more fishes
can be harvested to maximize yield harvested.
Reasearch area chosen based on fishing pressure of Gastropods snails. The
research was done from 2005 to 2008. Fields research steps: monitoring snails
collected by vendors every month from 2005-2008. The shells length and size were
measured from the harvested snails (mm) and weight (g). Laboratory research
include reproductive system, mature size, spawning season based on gonad index,
and age determination using operculum.
Laboratory research includes characterization of reproductive system i.e.:
a. Monitoring Gonad Index. Sample with first maturity size were used for this monitor
every month for at least a year. Gonad and muscle used but was not include shell
(Pal & Hodgson. 2005b), gonad index counted and the graphic developed was
analyzed descriptively.
b. Age determination using Operculum. The procedures used followed (Richardson
dkk. 2005b, Richardson dkk. 2005d). A number of 101 samples with variation in
size used from the collection, and the number of adventicious layers were
counted.
-
149
Variables observed are (Sparre & Venema 1999): Shell length, snail weight,
and size of mature female.
Data analysis principally follows Paulys guidance (Pauly 1984), and have
been selected based on need. Number inside the parentheses follows Literature
/Landasan Pustaka. All data were analyzed yearly and in total four years:
1. Shell length data (Lt
2. Snail weight data (Wt) were used on Yield analysis, and stock prediction
analysis of yield Y/R dan B/R.
) were arranged in the form of shell length frequency
monthly.
3. Von Bertalanffy Growth Formula (VBGF) Lt = L(1 -e-K(t-to)) (1) needs Elefan I
analysis and to
4. Growth Rate Analysis using equation L/t=(L(t+t) L(t)/t and VBGF
curvature parameter (K) counted yearly and total for four year.
value.
5. Age determination was done using operculum to clarify actual age for every
shells length on the samples. All the results from shell length, number of
operculum layers, and age, had been used to calibrate specimen age.
6. Age Structure had been develop from specimen age calibration and shell
length frecuency data. Date was grouped per age and each group age
developed to percentage.
7. The second step was mortality estimation. There were two methods used each
complementary to the other:
a. Length Converted Catch Curve using the formula Ln (Ni/ti) = a +b.ti
-
150
b. Pauly using equation Z=M+F to separate M and F, and the nisbah of
exploitation could be counted using equation E=F/Z and to estimate M
using equation ln M= -0,152 0,279*lnL+ 0,6543*lnK+0,463* lnT feed
with mean of temperatures.
8. Later on using equation of inversion VBGF, t(L) = to (1/K*ln(1-L/L)), the to
parameter can be found.
9. Length in relation to weight of specimen could be found using: W = cLn
10. The third step was to see Recruitment Pattern using inversion VBGF from
length frequency to time axis from time series samples.
or log
W = log c + n log L
11. Then Gonad Index was used to estimate reproduction season using
IG=100*(BG/BT).
12. Estimated the CPUE=C/f followed by Maximum Sustainable Yield/MSY using
Schaefer Model.
13. as an alternatives of MSY, Prediction Analysis were done to stock, using:
Y=F.B where Y=yield, B=mean stock size, and F= fishing mortality.
Yield/Recruit relative prediction using formula Y/R=E.UM/K (1-3U/(1+m) +
3U2/(1+2m) U3
14. Analysis Ordination or multivariate gradient analysis was used to see
relationship on variables (density, fishing weight, and Gonad Index). The
program used was Canoco
/(1+3m) and Biomass/recruit relative prediction using
B/R=(Y/R)/F. an input of M/K value was needed.

The stock analysis was done using Program FISAT II downloaded from website FAO
(Schmidt dkk. 2002, Sparre & Venema 1999).
This research has been able to follow the population dynamic of R. sinensis
in Krakal Beach, Saptosari, Yogyakarta, which in short can be summarized here:
Life cycle of R. sinensis has been elucidated. This intertidal snail is dioecious
and reaches its female gonad maturity on size 28 mm. On its third year has five
adventitious layer of its operculum with length of operculum 5 mm. Reproductive
pattern shows by gonad index has its peak on April, with estimation of birth on May.
Eggs have a form of chain with jellylike material as connector of one egg with
another. Length of chain may reach 30-50 cm. Planktonic larvae in the form of
trochophore and then transform into veliger larvae. Within a month will be settling
down to the bottom of the sea and metamorphosis into benthonic juvenile which is
similar with its adult form. On June-July benthonic juvenile can be found in recruit.
Growth of R. sinensis: shell length at age of a year reach 14.7 mm, and every year
the shell length growth into 25.2, 31.8, 36.0, and 38.8 mm. Maximum age 7 years
and shell length 41.6 mm. This species reach the age of 5 years on the average.
Male to female ratio is 100:150. Length of reproduction time every year reaches 5
months, with two reproductive peaks on April and October. In short the pattern of
reproduction is bimodal, a specific characteristic of tropic animal.
Population numbers or density will increase with reproduction. Although
number of births still in question, but there is an increase from recruit to population or
stock. Recruit have two peaks on May-June and November. Population will decrease
in numbers and biomass with natural and fishing mortality. R. sinensis has total
-
152
mortality, Z= 1.57 that compose of natural mortality M= 1.0 and fishing mortality
F=0.57. Conversion to percentage given a number of Z=79.2%. Survivorship
percentage is about 20.8%. The type of mortality and survivorship pattern are very
specific for invertebrates, where on the very early stage, mortality was very high and
the survivors may reach their reproductive age and old. The lowest recruit size 5.5
mm, from October 2006 sample. This sample was equal with less than six months,
so that the length of stage as plankton is very short or more or less about a month.
Biomass and numbers of fishing plot tend to increase year to year, so as
fishing yield to fishing effort plot. This indicate that fishing yield of R. sinensis is on
the initial phase of exploitation, where the rate of exploitation lower compare to new
recruits into stock or population. MSY Cadima resulting a mass of 1561,181g/yr =
130,1 g/month. This is equal to a harvest of 65 individual of R. sinensis/month. MSY
Gulland resulting a mass of 1133,597 g/yr = 94,5 g/month. This is equal to 47-48
individual/month. Apparently this is obvious that only a small number of R sinensis
can be harvested per day. Yield per recruit prediction shows maximum value on M/K
2.128, Lc/L 0.5 and exploitation ratio 0.6 and 0.7, on highest value 0.027. This
shows that yield can be managed through length of shell with a certain size which
gave maximum value. Example on Lc/L 0,5 and 0,6 w hich more or less equal to
shell length 26-28 mm. Decreasing fishing or increasing fishing under or above this
level will decrease yield. Meanwhile, for biomass per recruit shows maximum value
on M/K 2,128 and Lc/L0,6 or 0,8 or more with lowest exploitation ratio of (0,1) and
with value 0,851 and 0,876. This indicate that the increase in exploitation will
decrease yield.
