DEFINITION OF ELC

v ELC is used to control the frequency and power generated from small hydro power generator by diverting excess power to dummy load electronically through thyristor as electronic switch.

v In principle the purpose of ELC is to make sure that power generated by the turbine is the same with power consumed.

BENEFIT OF USING THE ELC

v Stable frequency and voltage generated by the system, thus preventing the damaged electronic appliances due to high frequency/voltage

v Avoid the damage on generator due to runaway speed when the main load is switched off or decreased

v No water hammer risk on the penstock, since no need of sudden low closing when full load rejection

v No need to open or close the turbine during the load change, thus operator work is simpler

v Easy in installation, operation and maintenance as well as longer life time expectancy

v Fast recovery time upon sudden load change. Frequency will be recover to set point less than 0.73 second

v Affordable price compared to any other control system type v ELC panel is integrated with standard protection and metering, as well as

customized system for data monitoring and logging v Can be integrated with remote data monitoring system (RMS) to view the

data of the plant through web interface and mobile phone (SMS)

New generation of Protel Multi Energy’s ELC (V0614) is a result of extensive research and development to re ine the older version which has been working for two years and add more features to accommodate extensive use of ELC for different application. New ELC board is utilizing ATMega AVR microcontroller series with 40 pin, resulting in compact board with broader capability to ensure better quality and reliability in control. ELC is based on frequency signal, it will continuously checking the frequency every half cycle (10 ms), and take required action based on the frequency measured, if the measured frequency is above frequency set point it will trigger the thyristor at certain phase angle according to the error and continuously adjusted until set point is reached. Frequency will be keep at set point (50 Hz) with error around 0.01-0.05 Hz (1%). Frequency Recovery time is around 0.73 second, which mean if there is load change (disturbance) to the system, the frequency will be back to set point within 0.73 second. Controller response (PI parameter) can be adjusted through dip switch on ELC main board, along with other feature provided such as (60 Hz application, droop control, synchronization option, etc). Switching method is done with two step phase angle triggering which can control power from 0-100% with minimized harmonic distortion. Dummy load is overrated by minimum 20% from designed power output to cater excess power generated and ensuring the steady and safe operation of the plant.
