In this week’s TBJ we have made a couple of changes in the layout of the magazine. We’re splitting up the ThereThen section from the What’s On and putting it into the back area to bring more prominence to the rest of the content in the magazine, namely the feature stories, food section, arts and more. Some people appear to forget what the beat magazine is actually about, which is providing a source of entertainment information in all its forms so we’ve decided to make it clearer. Partying sure is fun but there is more to it than that. We eat, we drink and we be merry in this town and when people are working so hard it is essential to get some time off and find a bit of rest and relaxation. That includes of course dining, seeing live music, watching movies, visiting museums or art galleries and the quintessential clubbing.

Also in this edition we have more insights on life in Jakarta with Jim Read’s ongoing commentary on all things Big Durian. This week he’s focusing on the slowly run-down Busway buses and the measures that must be taken to address the situation. Dethu is reviewing a duo playing some great folk alternative to rave reviews around town and then the girls from fashiondaily set us again in the right direction in being fashionable people, as we all should be of course. New writer Marcel informs us of the highs and lows of local concert video production in a piece about a concert late last year, Djakarta Atmosphere and Budi is out and about dining in the better restaurants bringing us all the juice on the culinary movements around town. There are also stories on classical music, film, the arts, shops and more so take a good look inside and tell us what you think of it by sending an email to [email protected]. Go on, do it now. Have a good couple of weeks, folks.

RED SqUARE | WEDNESDAY 13 JUNE | 11PM

DJ Fadlie has quite a unique DJ story. In 2002, he joined with a Dutch cruise ship as a DJ for two years. After returning home, a few clubs invited him to join their line ups as a resident DJ, such as BC Bar club, Retro, Blackpearl, 999, and Barcode. He is currently with Electrosoul and has won a variety of awards including the Heineken Thirst Senses as a finalist, as a runner up of Electro DJ at REDMA 2010, and Best Resident DJ of the Year for REDMA 2010. He is currently a resident for Second Floor and is in the number 14 position of Indonesian DJs at REDMA 2011. As a local DJ, Fadlie shared the stage with international DJs, like Jean Claude Ades, King Unique, Kasey Taylor, Grant Nelson, and so on.

Besides becoming a resident DJ at Second Floor, Fadlie is still with Electrosoul which is busy organizing many events either in Jakarta and other cities. DJ Fadlie will appear at ‘Rock the Beat’ which will be held by Red Square on June 13.

HARD ROCK CAFE | THURSDAY 14 JUNE

Many a band have been labeled as the reincarnation of that legendary Liverpool group, the Beatles. One local band that goes by the name G-Pluck is among them. As their name suggests (a word play that means ‘to copy’), members of G-pluck, Awan (vocal, bass), Adnan (vocal, rhythm guitar), Wawan (vocal, lead guitar), and Beni (vocal, drums) copy everything about the Beatles, like the outfit to the last detail, and performing Beatles’ songs in their original style. G-pluck was formed in 2000 and was the only band from South East Asia who performed at The Beatles Week Festival held in Liverpool in 2008. In other words, G-Pluck is one of the best Beatle incarnations in Indonesia.

Let’s get back to 60’s! The band still performs many events keeping the Beatles’ memory alive every time they come on stage. They will be on the bill for Founder’s Day at Hard Rock Café Jakarta. The event’s back to the 70s theme is a tribute to the birth of Hard Rock Café. G-Pluck is considered to be the right act for the right time to perform at this event. Let’s get back to the 60s!

LUV’S BAR & DINE | FRIDAY 15 JUNE | 11PM

Since a very young age, Alannys Weber has dreamt of making it in the fabled world of entertainment. In her teens, Alannys decided to make those dreams happen. She did the standard thing by starting as a model while pursuing a career in acting as well. And like the quintessential FDJ, Weber hit it big when she switched her career to spinning tunes. To improve her skills she enrolled at Spinach Records which eventually asked her to join them. From then on she began performing at clubs like X2, Dragonfly, and Barcode in Jakarta, as well as clubs in Bandung, Surabaya, Balikpapan, Bali, and even in Amsterdam.

Be there! As she is still performing at clubs around Indonesia, Weber will come on the stage at the LUV’s Bar & Dine. After being featured a number of times, Alannys Weber remains a household name there and is scheduled to perform on June 15. Her set of music is guaranteed to blow her audience away again, including you. Want to get blown away by Alannys? Be there.

His given name is Andre Kotot, but we know him as DJ Kotot. His career began in 2002, and professionally Andre wanted to be more serious learning the mysterious ways of the DJ and did so under the label Stylophonic in 2004 in clubs and small events. By the time he appeared at big clubs and events, his name started to fill the air around Jakarta. In fact, DJ Kotot was one of the few quality DJs who played RnB and hip hop music in Jakarta. Huge events such as Greenland, Aquasonic, and Soul Nation as well as clubs like Embassy, Wonder Bar, Centro, Retro, Bliss, Venue, Equinox, and Blowfish are places on his resume. This naturally led to a residency at Immigrant and which has a hip hop and RnB program every Saturday.

One of the most graphic media images in early June showed a Transjakarta bus on fire at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout.

Apparently it was not just an isolated incident as 10 other vehicles have suffered a similar fate within the last year.As an occasional user of Busway Route 1, which runs from Blok M to Kota via Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin, I can vouch for how efficient and convenient the service can be, as you fly smugly past stationary traffic on both of these thoroughfares at peak times. Many people from a wide variety of backgrounds (expats included) obviously agree, judging by the passengers I see on the buses, which are frequently quite crowded during work hours. Route 1 seems to have become a victim of its own success. It has now been in operation for more than eight years and the vehicles are certainly showing the effects of the extreme wear and tear they suffer. Many are running well beyond their operational lifespan and require much more than routine servicing can provide in a workshop.

That’s just the vehicles. The bus shelters and linking walkways are subject to a daily pounding from thousands of footsteps and many are much the worse for wear. Many of the attempts at patching up damaged facilities are simply not up to the punishment they inevitably receive, day in day out.

All of this illustrates that while the statement in the title might be true for the individual, it doesn’t necessarily work for a corporation or major service provider: The sole on your shoe might be wearing out but you might delay repairing it for another month unless you wear it to walk many miles a day.

Equally, your car might not be working perfectly but as long you have it serviced regularly you might be able to avoid having to replace the engine entirely, provided your daily mileage is not too high.

The sheer intensity of use of facilities available to the general public, particularly in a megacity like Jakarta, means that the budget for maintenance and replacement is equally if not more important than the resources set aside to establish the service in the first place.

I suspect the woes that the Transjakarta Busway is now suffering may well be the result of a lack of foresight in budgetary arrangements when the service was first conceptualised a decade ago.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be like that, though. Look at Plaza Senayan, which opened around 16 years ago. With great foresight, the developer and owners decided to use durable materials of the highest quality when constructing the building and to ensure it was maintained to the highest possible standard.

This, coupled with careful selection of tenants, has ensured that the mall looks fresh and inviting, and functions as well as it did on the day it first opened.

Compare it with other malls of a similar vintage where this kind of foresight was not adopted to the same degree: They are certainly showing their age and look well past their prime. Let’s hope the Jakarta city administration and operator do decide to “fix” the busway properly for it is currently one of the few (partial) success stories in a city beset by seemingly intractable mass transportation problems. P erkenalkan: tristan. Memilih folk alternatif sebagai suguhan unggulan, paguyuban berkesenian beranggotakan dua pria, Andrie Ridwan (biduan, penulis lagu) serta Andrew Hutasoit (multi instrumentalis, komposer) ini

baru saja beberapa pekan silam menerbitkan album perdananya, HOME.

Here comes tristan, an alternative folk duo who are currently much-loved by many a young adults in Jakarta. Two high-school friends are the main members, Andrie Ridwan (singer, songwriter) and Andrew Hutasoit (multi-instrumentalist, composer), and they have just released their full-length debut album, HOME.

Consisting of 11 songs, only one is written in Indonesian, the rest are in English. However, the Indonesian one, “Jelang Malam”, was instantly appreciated by the Indonesian public and has reached top position on one of a Jakarta radio station’s indie chart.

Released under Demajors Records, all of the album material was intimately recorded at home, using what the band calls their “home-recording” technique. Presenting “Songbird” as their first single, Tristan’s musical style is, according to them, heavily infected by The Beatles, Radiohead, Nick Drake, Jon Brion and Brooke Fraser.

Last year’s “Djakarta Artmosphere,” or simply “Djakmosphere,” music festival had its best lineup to date. So it only made sense that the newly released accompanying DVD would also prove to be a better viewing experience than its 2010’s choppy and rushed predecessor. From better shots of performances to a stronger sense of continuity, the “Djakarta Artmosphere 2011” DVD is a fairer representation of how the festival actually went down. For better or worse.

DVD releases of local live performances are still in their infancy. Undetermined aesthetics and a lack of connection between cinematographers and the onstage production team often results in a perceptible disconnect between the visuals and sound.

Instead of grabbing the most memorable moments and capturing the performers’ energy, many local music DVDs feel akin to watching a

sleepy arena act from the cheapest seats on the floor — a montage of stock footage that dulls rather than electrifies. Djakmosphere’s newest live concert film still has some of those flaws, but it compensates by smartly focusing on the day’s better performances.

The festival’s gimmick is a simple yet intriguing one: Get iconic musicians from the past to collaborate with the most interesting artists of today, most from the independent scene. Last year’s lineup included old-school pop-rock titans Koes Plus and jazzy songstress Margie Segers in collaboration with rock ’n’ rollers The Brandals and theatrical singer-songwriter Sarasvati.

Opening with collaboration between husband-and-wife acoustic duo Endah N Rhesa and Segers, the concert film gets off to a good start. Endah N Rhesa’s breezy flourishes make for a natural pairing with Segers’s similar vocals.

The DVD shows them collaborating on two covers — by vaunted Indonesian artists George Leiwakabessy and Charles Hutagalung ¬— which lets both the duo and Segers showcase their styles. The cinematography confusingly switches between artistic and stoically uninspired, but there’s enough movement in the performance to make for enjoyable viewing.

The DVD’s centerpiece is undoubtedly the Koes Plus collaboration with The Brandals, who are the modern equivalent of Koes Plus in their rebellious edge and socially conscious lyrics. Unfortunately, the collaboration ends up feeling tacked on, with The Brandals’ solo performance sounding and looking much livelier. “Obsesi Mesin Kota” (“City Machine Obsession”) is a roaring performance, while “Perak” (“Silver”), from the band’s latest record, shows how much they’ve grown musically.

Members of the band’s stage crew make repeated appearances on stage to seemingly warn the band of sound issues and allotted stage time, which would be fine had this been a live broadcast. But the general feeling is that such scenes should have been edited out.

Djakmosphere’s collaboration concept is exciting, ideally resulting in both parties challenging and bringing out the best in each other. But perhaps due to a lack of time or other factors, it still needs work.

This is most clear in Sarasvati’s collaboration with Keenan Nasution. Sarasvati is a conceptual singer-songwriter whose theatrical performances have garnered her a dedicated fan base, while Nasution is undoubtedly one of the country’s most iconic and versatile musicians. It seems like a perfect pairing, but Nasution’s part in Sarasvati’s “Bilur” (“Welt”) feels awkward, and their rendition of Guruh Soekarno Putra’s “Zamrud Khatulistiwa” (“Equatorial Emerald”) never gels.

Perhaps it was better when seen in person, but the DVD captures the audience responding with folded arms and half-hearted head shakes.

The better joint effort comes in the form of Bandung indie-poppers Pure Saturday’s collaboration with Yockie Suryo Prayogo, a legendary musician whose main arsenal is his keyboard. Running through Pure Saturday’s energetic “Albatros” and Suryo Prayogo’s “Elang” (“Hawk”), the pair seem to be comfortable enough with each other to let the songs run their own course. Their energy is welcome after the stiffness of the other collaborations.

The footage of the musicians casually conversing backstage and prior to the show is placed nicely between sets and adds color to the film.

have been swayed by this year’s ‘it’ color tangerine tango ever since the beginning of this year. It’s vibrant but it’s not neon! I’ve been seeing too many neons for the past

couple of seasons, that I thought it’s time to put a stop to it. But being a medium-tone woman, I love me some colors.

I’ve been wearing the only coral tone dress for the last two months every other week. But since new season collections have been coming into store, and I have the privilege of seeing them first, I saw many tangerino tango inspired colours will be hitting the rack. I thought, it’s about time to add another coral/orange shade item(s) on my wardrobe.

Here are the items that caught my eyes:

1. Raoul Grace Gown in Clementine – just the perfect mix between the maxi and orange trend. It has a modest cutting that flatters your body perfectly. Tried it and fell in love with it.

2. Max & Co Lattuga jacket – While I often go to meetings, but I don’t have to dress so conservatively. This orange jacket is the perfect one to add a punch of color to my meeting outfit.

3. Staccato heels – been seeing a chunky heels sling back like this one often lately, and I’ve been meaning to get a pair of Staccato since they’re made of real leathers material. What do you all think of this one?

4. Steve Madden Btippie Orange – the perfectly-sized, structured bag. What more could one’s ask?

5. Bulgari Omnia Coral – not a fashion related items, but it suits the color scheme just perfectly don’t you think? Currently one of my everyday fragrances.

Bulgari Omnia Coral have a fresh whiff of scent as it opens up and stays light. It has a note that is so familiar and yet is not too intense as most floral notes. That note is hibiscus petals, or as we call it: bunga kembang sepatu. It took me back to my kindergarten days, where my school was filled with that flowers and the scents would emanate to the entire school when it blooms. It opens up with scents of bergamot and goji berries, followed by hibiscus petals right after. The heart note is an aquatic whiff of water lily. Slowly, it ends with a pomegranate – still with the initial lightness, not too sweet – followed by a warm cedar and musk.

Bought any tangerine tango item recently? Why don’t you share it with us?

I’m sure you’ve heard the rumor buzzing since last year. Instead of another (flop) film, SATC is returning to

the small screen this year! But there’s a twist!Instead of continuing to follow the life of Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda, the new series will be based on The Carrie Diaries novel, a prequel of SATC, which tells the story of how young Carrie Bradshaw starts it all from her high school years. The show will focus on Bradshaw’s coming of age as a 16 and 17-year-old, from finding her first love, her early days as a writer in New York, to how she originally met Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. Epic!

Also, that means the show will takes place during the ‘80s. Ladies, prepare yourself a blast from the past.

The 18-years-old AnnaSophia Robb has been confirmed to play the young Carrie. If she seems familiar but you can’t remember

from where, you may have seen her as Violet Beauregarde in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Loren McConnell in The Reaping, Bethany Hamilton in Soul Surfer, and many others.

Before Anna Sophia Robb was confirmed, Blake Lively, Miley Cyrus and Glee’s Dianna Agron have all been linked to play the legendary Carrie Bradshaw. The funny thing is, Anna Sophia found out about her new job after it got published on the internet. She tweeted, “So excited for #carriediaries!” He also said “It was online before I even knew hahahaha oh technology.”

The Carrie Diaries will aim for a younger audience than SATC. The series will have Gossip Girl’s Josh Schwartz as the producer, and also Stephanie Savage, Len Goldstein, Amy B. Harris and the Carrie novels’ writer herself, Candace Bushnell, on board.

Filming has started in New York City since March, and paparazzi photos have already spread on the internet, showing young Carrie in her array of ’80s outfits.

With the corkscrew curls, shiny shoes, eclectic clothing and clumsiness, AnnaSophia Robb can surely pass as young Carrie. One question, though, where’s the mole?

Anyway, some people think that the show would be “milking a cash cow” too much—six amazing seasons and two bad movie spin-off is enough. But some die-hard fans also say, another SATC spin-off is better than no SATC at all.

Welcome to The Goods Diner! Located at the SCBD area, this new eatery opened on February 2012.

The building itself was once a great hangout place a few years back, but now the Bengkel Nightpark was renamed into the Fairgrounds Building and is becoming the talk of the town yet again. The Goods Diner features a bright and airy interior with warm wood, juxtaposing nicely with white brick walls and is very cozy, casual, but with a touch of contemporary class. We visited them very recently on a late afternoon after a Jakarta downpour, and we decided to wait for traffic to ease up a bit before our drive home.We were very impressed with the food at The Goods Café, so we expected no less (or even more) from their new establishment. And they did not disappoint us one bit! We started with the Caesar Salad (40k); an appetizing mix of romaine lettuce, roasted tomatoes, garlic croutons, and avocados, with your choice of grilled shrimp or chicken breast. We picked the former and the well marinated shrimps accented the salad very scrumptiously.Another twist of the old favorite is the Chicken Wings (40k). They have a bit of a lip-smacking zing courtesy of the mix of Sriracha sauce and honey glaze, with the blue cheese dip provided a great accompaniment for the wings. As for the main course, we opted for the Brie Mushroom Burger (75k); a juicy patty with brie cheese and king trumpet mushroom, served with hand-cut fries, topped with grated cheese.

The meat is what a great burger should be like, the brie adds a certain flavorsome ‘je ne sais quoi’, but the thinly cut, some-skin-intact fries just bring it all home. The Filipino Short Rib (150k) is also fast becoming a firm favorite of the patrons here. Served with garlic rice, the tasty Adobo sauce gives the rib a bit of an accent. Masarap! For some sweet dessert, there’s the ever popular Red Velvet Cake (50k), but the Apple Mango Pie (35k) is equally as impressive. The blended drinks here are also quite unique. Visually attractive and colorful juice mixes, like the purple-ish Red Cabbage Berry juice (30k), and the multi colored Carrot Beet Orange juice (40k), are great choices to wash down your meals. As for cocktails, the bar concocted the Peaches and Cream Martini (95k); a pleasant mix of vanilla vodka, ice blended peaches, with icing sugar. Another good piece of information; the Happy Hour at The Goods Diner is on everyday from 4.30pm until 7.30pm. The ‘Buy 1 Get 1 Free Beer’ deal is perfect for waiting for rush hour traffic to subside. The new place is exactly the type of place to have a bite to eat, share a drink or two, and even to hang out. Why not spend your Friday or Saturday night here, as you check out the DJs performing? Oh and by the way, check out a little corner there for you lovebirds to have a romantic dinner. The Goods Diner is highly recommended. (Budi Iskandar)

hen it comes to shopping centers, Blok M Square isn’t really on top of people’s minds. It may not be the biggest or

most modern of malls, but many Jakartans have a soft spot for this revamped old favorite.

We were there recently, looking for the latest copies of DVDs and some used paperbacks, and we came across a great find as we searched for an eating place.

Potbelli (Yes, it is not a typo) is tucked away in a corner on the top floor of the mall, near the XXI Cinemas. The restaurant was just opened in the beginning of May, but from the look of it, they’re already winning lots of hearts, and stomachs! The décor is simple, with some twists. There’s a pseudo Tatami seating inside, a local tea joint seats in the front, and the wooden ‘boxes’ area on the outside that looks quite modish.

The menu items here are mostly Asian, but with some interesting accents. The Sop Seafood Asam Pedas A La Thai (29k) was our starter. At first glance it does look like a hot and spicy Tom Yum soup, but they were filled with local-style ‘extras’ which gave it a bit of an edge.

The best selling dish at Potbelli is the Pindang Iga Sapi (30k) and it’s easy to see why. A variety of meat soup, the pindang broth here is a delightful merging of Betawi (Old Jakarta) and Banjar (South Borneo) tastes. It’s an appetizing blend of herbs and spices, which is not only a firm favorite with the locals, but also with foreigners that visit the restaurant.

The Potbelli Crispy Combo (24.5k) also made it to our table; deep fried chicken, fish, and prawn, with your choice of sauce. You can pick the Barbecue, Black Pepper, Asam Manis (sweet and sour), Cabai Hijau (green chili), or the Menado-style Dabu Dabu. We opted for the latter one and the sauce really gave the dish an extra lift.We also ordered some vegetable dishes; the multi-veggie stir fry dish called Potbelli Vegetarian Platter (16.5k), and the delectable Bok Choy Terasi (15.5k). Terasi is a type of shrimp paste, a common ingredient used in South East Asian cooking. The terasi mentioned here is more in the style of Malaysia or Singapore, also known as Belacan. Whatever method it is, we found the dish to be very tasty!

All of these dishes are crying for a helping or two of white rice, but we found another pleasant surprise in the form of Nasi Jamur (5k). It’s a rice and mushroom blend, risotto-style. You just have to try one for yourself. Just delicious!

The restaurant also serves some Western food, and our pick was the Fettuccine Bolognaise. Now it may sound like an ordinary pasta and meat sauce dish, but they really did it right; the fettuccine was al dente, and you can really taste the fresh tomatoes in the sauce. We have another winner here.

As for drinks, the multi-fruit Rainbow Juice and the Ice Blended Green Tea are very refreshing. And with some room left for dessert, the Grilled Banana Caramel (12k) hit just the right spot. For a fabulous fusion of flavors you’ll love, come to Potbelli! (Budi Iskandar)

A Quick Chat with Maestro/Composer:

He has been recognized for his talents as a great maestro pianist and his fantastic achievements over the years. He received a scholarship from Petro piano to study in the University of Hartford in Connecticut in 1986 and graduated with summa cum laude in 1993 from the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag in 1993. Ananda also received numerous international awards including a Nadia Boulanger Award of Orleans.

These days, Ananda Sukarlan focuses on composing music from art songs to operas. The Beat Jakarta had an opportunity to have a quick chat with the maestro right before his charity fund raising event for street children started.

TBJ: What keeps you busy lately?AS: Writing my new pocket opera, no comedies like my previous “Mendadak Kaya” or tragedies

On this issue, Jakarta decided to take a holiday from classical musical concerts. Thus, we turn our attention to one of Indonesia’s renowned classical musicians. His name is Ananda Sukarlan.

like “Ibu” this time, but a horror one. As a superstitious guy, I still don’t want to give away too many details, before it’s at least 80% finished...

TBJ: Your career has evolved from playing piano to now composing. How does that transformation feel to you? Would you do it differently?AS: It feels great. I must say I was “too successful” as a pianist, but hey, I enjoyed that piano period anyway (which I am still in once in a while as a nice intermezzo away from composing), so the answer is no, I wouldn’t change anything even if I could.

TBJ: What was your childhood dream? Do you think, you will ever do your childhood dream one day? AS: Many people think that becoming a pianist

long-term project with Institut Musik Indonesia for giving lectures to young and very enthusiastic composers every time I visit Indonesia. I must say that their sharp minds make me think of many things, such as a question by one of them: who wants to listen to a half-an-hour symphony by an Indonesian composer here? My answer was “well, the traffic jam in Jakarta is the perfect place to listen to a recording of its complete performance and even repeating it”, but in fact I don’t know the right answer. What I know is that in big cities, with the immense traffic jam and a quantity of shopping malls, the right place to listen to live performances should be in malls (I mean, an adequate hall built inside it), since you have all the supplements to an enjoyable artistic experience: dinner in a restaurant you can choose before, and a cafe to chill out after (or vice versa). For the time being going to a

concert in a big city here means sacrifices: going directly from your office to the

hall to avoid the traffic, coming separately with your family

and friends, and finding open restaurants after the concert is finished to hang around with friends. That’s why it’s not enjoyable and therefore not so attractive. Concert halls are much more than a place with great acoustics;

it is a place where people should be. And since people

flock to malls, why not seduce them to the hall inside it?

TBJ: Any chance you will create a symphonic composition? AS: Yes and I have written some but they were and will be (for the time being) performed abroad only, unfortunately, except for some very rare moments such as my short piece for piano and orchestra “Fons Juventatis” (commissioned by Indonesia Opera Society). Orchestra managers and conductors in Indonesia are still reluctant to perform music by Indonesian composers that are purely symphonic and not arrangements of some “familiar” or popular tunes.

TBJ: What are your plans for the rest of 2012? AS: Create a ballet with choreographer Chendra Panatan using the latest technology will occupy us during most of the second half of this year.

TBJ: How to describe Ananda Sukarlan?AS: He’s that passionate guy who absobloodylutely loves his job!

was my ultimate aim, but in fact my dream was becoming a composer, though the act of producing sounds from the fingers does excite me a lot. So, I AM in the process of enjoying my dream, though now I know more specifically that my favorite genre is opera or anything else involving the human voice and characters. And the public seems to enjoy it, so what more can I ask? I have no materialistic dreams, I am happy with what I have now.

TBJ: Tell us about composing operas. What are the challenges? AS: Needless to say, I prefer writing operas in Indonesian to other languages. But that means that they would almost exclusively be performed in Indonesia, while we don’t have an adequate opera house here, as well as sponsorship and the infrastructure of an opera company (even if it’s only temporary for particular performances). That’s why for now I only write “pocket operas” which can be performed in small halls, though I must say I enjoy it immensely due to its practicalities of performing and the intimate relationship among the few artists as a result of being together for a few days working on something with common enthusiasm. I am also greatly thankful to Amadeus Enterprise of Surabaya who organizes the bi-annual National Voice competition “Tembang Puitik Ananda Sukarlan” from which we discover amazing talents, such as its winner of last year, coloratura soprano Evelyn Merrelita.

TBJ: Do you think Indonesians are ready for more local operas when they still stumble around with existing classical western operas?AS: On the contrary! I am amazed that people in Indonesia like my operas more than, say, Puccini’s, since mine are presented in a language they understand and dealing with contemporary topics. In fact, that’s what I think operas should be, just like Puccini’s, Britten’s or Andre Previn’s. It should connect to the audience not only through music but also its commonplace subject and language. If we composers would only like to communicate through 100% music we’d write a purely abstract, say, violin concerto, which I do enjoy once in a while.

TBJ: What do you think of the Indonesian classical music scene these days? Have we been improving in right direction? What do you think is needed to change for the good?AS: I can give you an example. I am having a

More than three decades ago, the iconic movie Alien is back with a prequel from maestro director Ridley Scott with Prometheus. Here the questions that were asked in the 1979 Alien is revealed to you in more advanced visual effects bringing more gripping sci-fi horror than ever before. It’s a prequel that everyone has been waiting for this year and it comes with an ensemble cast that will most likely provide the cinematic science fiction experience of 2012.

Tanpa disadari,

Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria are still trying to go back to the Big Apple and their beloved Central Park zoo in New York. In search for the penguins, they end up in Monte Carlo where they attract attention of animal control and become wanted in all over Europe. You’ll laugh your rear quarters off.

Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and director Timur Bekmambetov reinvent the history of United States’ favorite president. Abraham Lincoln’s untold tale as the greatest hunter of the undead is just about the most stormsome reinvention of history ever. In this horror action flick full of terrifying bloodthirsty vampires, you’ll find both the gripping and tense as well as humorous and amusing. So put on your top hat, emancipate the slaves, and get ready to watch some vampires get slaughtered. Too bad Edward Cullen isn’t around to get impaled.

We discovered last week it’s not a bad idea to arrive early to X2 for the big show. Stationed at our corner of the dance floor, stand-up

table was the ideal place to be as the place packed out by the time the main act arrived right at midnight. So packed in fact it was a struggle to get to the wash room. He’s not a real tall dude our Dash but he definitely makes up for it in great trance music, and he’s not afraid of getting up on the decks and showing us his iPad. Very innovative stuff. After a solid three hours of class trance that had the house bouncing, Dash pulled out his last and probably sweetest track in collaboration with Emma Hewitt, “Waiting”. With almost 13 million hits on Youtube, the popularity of that track can’t be denied. Totally stormsome!

This is the briefcase that converts into a charcoal grill with motorized spits for grilling authentic Brazilian churrasco. The briefcase sets up on its four removable legs and a motor inside its lid automatically rotates the four included spits over a charcoal tray in the base, producing meat with crisp, golden-brown exteriors and succulent interiors-the hallmarks of churrasco. The grill’s 4,000 cubic inches of cooking space and the stainless steel spits enable a pork tenderloin, rack of lamb, ribs, and sausages to be cooked simultaneously, providing ample food for a large gathering. Handles on the spits help cooks carve meat tableside. The spits are powered by a rechargeable battery that provides up to eight hours of power after a six hour charge, or the included AC- and car-outlet adapters provide tethered power. The briefcase is made from durable yet lightweight aluminum and the charcoal tray is coated with porcelain for ease of cleanup. www.hammacher.com $719.95

ucked away within the bowels of Seminyak’s famous Sentosa resort, Evo restaurant is earnestly putting the authentic back into continental

cooking thanks to the Italian roots of American head chef William Collier. New York-born, William cuts a striking figure at the helm of Evo, with a bundle of experience from running some of the top restaurant kitchens around the world, not to mention around Bali.

An acronym of extra virgin oil, Evo is as much an evolution in terms of name as it is in their approach to cuisine, with traditional dishes given a modern twist that remains faithful to the style. Moving away from the standard Asian fare, at Evo you can expect approachable, recognizable Italian cuisine like classic variations on pastas, wood-fired pizzas and a smattering of top-notch fish and meat dishes.

The styling throughout Sentosa has always been unique, and the overhauled Evo is no exception, with plush white leather sofa booths bathed in deep red light from the hanging lanterns dotted about – the subtly positioned mirrors along three sides of the restaurant enhancing the

EVO AT SENTOSAPRIVATE VILLAS & SPA

dappled lighting effect. In short, it’s the kind of chic, bold atmosphere that wouldn’t be out of place in Milan or Manhattan.

Although there is a selection of lighter bites for the casual crew during the day, Evo is really only a dinner venue, and from 6pm onwards it all comes alive with the buzz of diners feasting on the hearty fare, creative cocktails and perfectly paired wines thanks to the in-house sommelier.Keen to present a decent medley of dishes from the menu, chef William organizes a tasting menu for us to make sure we get a proper feel for what the Evo experience is all about, and it’s not long before we’re tucking into a star studded lineup of no less than seven courses – each one pared down a touch from the normal portion available a la carte.

After a tastebud-rousing amuse bouche consisting of tuna sashimi and avocado, an iced platter of the lime and Tabasco caviar topped oysters raw (45k+/pc) is placed before us and dutifully gobbled down – fresh oysters particularly being one of my numerous foodie weak points.

Hot on the heels of the raw oysters comes a serving of the fantastic cured Spanish ham (200k+) with black olive jam and crostini toast which goes down a treat, before the next plate consisting of savoury mushroom, gorgonzola and prawn zeppoles (23k+/pc and 35k+/pc respectively) is also unquestioningly devoured. Dipped in a creamy sauce the Italian style stuffed doughnuts are incredibly morish, and are a great example of the approachable Evo fare that William has created.

After a brief interlude to freshen up the palate with a nice Chianti, we plough right on into the two main dishes, namely fresh fish of the day (market price) which in this case is seared tuna chunks on risotto, and the super tender lamb cotoletta (180k+), all the while a nice selection of reds flowing freely to compliment the dishes. Last but by no means least comes the heavenly white chocolate vanilla panna cotta (70k+) – nothing short of a dessert sensation.

Be sure to check out Tuesday and Thursday nights at Evo, where live acoustic music adds to the ambience to create a memorable dining event.

STanTon WarriorS

Poco Loco was more than a little bit crazy when the a couple warriors of Stanton

played there one Friday night. C Pen opened up the show and built up the beats and brought it back down again for the headlining Stanton Warriors. When the Warriors hit the decks, they started it off with some breaks which gave way to a more melodious sound and dove into drum and bass. By the end of their set, their beats were harder than Chuck Norris’ abs. The crowd seemed to love it and that’s why we tip our hats to Audio’Bot Studios.
