Christmas time is here! For those of you wishing for a white Christmas, well tough luck, because the closest thing to snow Jakarta has is shaved ice on top of es cendol.

Even if Jakarta’s Christmas’ aren’t white, the approach of the jolly season can already be felt with the Christmas themed decorations popping up everywhere around the city. Even the club scene has pitched in to welcome the seasonal fan fair with decorations fitting for the occasion. With almost every eating outlet offering turkey dinners with all the trimmings, you start to wonder why people still want to do the whole Christmas dinner at home instead of just going out. If the vast number of Christmas themed parties and turkey dinner serving

restaurants have got you scratching your head trying to figure out which one you have to go to, TBJ has compiled a short run down of Christmas events in this edition which will save you a lot of stress. So hang your stockings up before you hit the clubs and hope Santa does treat you well this year.

Before Jakarta Biennale 2011 takes place, a special warm up event in the form of a street art show will be held from the 8th to 18th of December. The event titled ‘Breaking The Wall’ will feature a vast array of urban street art from murals, graffiti, and recycled junk art, to three dimensional illusionist art forms. ‘Breaking The Wall’ is intended to champion the positive side of street art and erase the notions of vandalism usually associated with this art form. The event

will be held at the field theatre of Taman Ismail Marzuki and will showcase the works of Komunitas X Serut, Popo & Kampung Segart, IKJ’S Action Painting, Lintas Melawai, Amel n Friends, Atap Alis and curated by Bambang Sri Widjanarko.

The Sacramento based band formed by members Chino Moreno (vocals), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Chi Cheng (bass), Frank Delgado (keyboards & turntables), and Abe Cunningham (drums & percussion) - better known as Deftones - will be landing in Jakarta on the 8th of February to rock the Jakarta crowd. Thanks once again to Java Musikindo, this band which recently released their new album ‘Diamond Eyes’ will be performing at Tennis Indoor Senayan. It seems like Java Musikindo have prepared

a great lineup of performers set to rock Jakarta early in 2011 and if you follow Dethu’s story to this regard inside this edition you will find out more as to why it is working so well..

2December isn’t over yet, but Java Musikindo has already announced several of the bands scheduled to make their way to Jakarta next year. British band, ‘Bring Me The Horizon’ from Sheffield England will be performing at Tennis Indoor Senayan on the 19th of February next year. It may still seem like a long time away but better get the tickets early as Java Musikindo events almost always sell out months before the event even takes place. So go online and get your tickets asap before they sell out. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

LUV’s 8Delapan DJ & Model Management have scheduled a Classic Disco tour which will land in the major clubs around the nation, set to reignite the passion of classic disco in Indonesia. A total of 25 legendary DJs who made a name for themselves back in the 80’s and 90’s will all share the limelight once again at various clubs spread across the archipelago. Some of the DJ greats include Max Don, Tommy Fans, Pandu, Olly Tandjung, Kitting Lee plus many more oldies but goodies. The tour will travel through Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Jogjakarta, Bali, Samarinda, Manado, and Medan (with many other places still to be confirmed). Be sure not to miss these legends when they hit a club close to you.

4On the 16th and 17th of December, Gedung Kesenian Jakarta situated near Pasar Baru is set to hold Festival Musik Indonesia. A whole gala of music from world to classical will be performed live by a number of performers including Jogjakarta based band Kua Etnikaled - known for their ethnic percussion performances with touches of modern electronic instruments. Before the two-day concert, from the 11th to 15th of December, an exhibition titled ‘Organologi 2’ will be held there as well, and will feature various traditional string instruments such as Sasando, Rebi and Kecapi. For more information about the exhibition and concert please call Ranti. Tel: (021) 398 99634

How crazy would things get if all the winners of Heineken Thirst Indonesia were gathered together to share the stage? If this thought has ever crossed your mind you can wonder no longer, as on the 17th of December the past winners of Heineken thirst from 2005 up until 2008 will be performing at X2 to showcase their skills and prove why they came out as the champions. Apart from the competition winning DJs, international DJ Duo Kyau & Albert will be there to liven up the party. This is a once in a lifetime experience to see the best of the best DJs in Indonesia share the decks, so don’t miss it. See you on the dance floor!

As well as Java Musikindo’s sterling efforts to continually bombard Jakarta with an endless supply of international rock bands, Blade Consortium have upped the ante and are bringing in rock/funk/hip hop group N.E.R.D. If everything goes according to schedule, members Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo and Shay Haley will be landing in Jakarta on the 10th of January to perform at Istora Senayan. The latest information is that the first wave of early bird tickets for the event have already sold out. Second wave early bird tickets

are currently available and will set you back Rp375K for tribune seats and Rp475K for festival tickets. For more information contact; Nabila tel: 085714691487, or Arshy tel: 0856.91589991.

Those of you who were unfortunate enough not to catch Secondhand Serenade when they performed in Jakarta last year will be ecstatic to know that the band is set to return to Indonesia on the 8th and 9th of January, this time rocking in Bandung and Surabaya instead of Jakarta. When in Bandung the band will be performing at Sabuga Bandung, while in Surabaya they’ll be rocking at Gramedia Expo Surabaya. If you are a big fan of Secondhand Serenade, you’ll definitely not want to miss this performance even if it’s away from Jakarta. Pre-sale tickets are available for Rp200K, while normal prices will set you back Rp250K. For more information please tel: (022) 86065439 or 085624884060.

Baroque EveningChristmas Concert

By Erza S.T.

| 043beatmag.com

Courtesy of the Mexican Embassy of Indonesia, Horacio Franco and Santiago Alvarez will perform for the very first time in Jakarta on 18th December 2010 at Erasmus Huis. To the Mexican classical music scene, the name Horacio Franco is no longer unknown. He is the most successful Mexican classical musician with a vast repertoire ranging from Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary works.

Having studied in Mexico and Holland, Horacio has performed in most major theaters in the world and has conducted many orchestras, including among others “The Academy of St. Martin in The Fields” for seven consecutive seasons. Enjoying a virtual rock star status, he has broken the stereotype of any traditional classical musician. A frequent soloist with almost all Mexican orchestras, Horacio has also performed with many respected ensembles around the globe such as The American Composers Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, The Berliner Symphoniker, Hungary’s Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra and Tokyo Solisten.

This prolific musician has also produced 22 CDs in which he performs as either soloist or conductor. In his career so far, he has done world premieres for over 50 new compositions that were written especially for him by composers around the world. His love of Baroque music moved him to be the founding director of Capella Cervantina – a voice and instrumental group specializing in that genre. It is surely a great opportunity not to be missed, especially since he is performing for one night only.

Back on the Christmas theme, The Jakarta Oratorio Society together with Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra

Christmas just a few weeks away, but Jakarta still has a few wonderful surprises to offer us away from the festive theme. We are going to be treated to a bit of baroque in the third week of December thanks to famous Mexican flutist Horacio Franco coming to town with his fellow pianist Santiago Alvarez to bring you all famous Baroque compositions made for flute and piano.

will be performing some classical treats. Under the baton of Dr. Jahja Ling, they are ready to perform Chopin’s ‘Piano Concerto No. 2’ featuring Jessie Chang as the pianist as well as Robert Shaw’s ‘Many Moods of Christmas’ on this upcoming 26th December 2010 at Aula Simfonia.

This husband and wife duo of Jahja Ling and Jessie Chang are quite the prolific pair. Jessie appeared at the Blossom Festival with The Cleveland Orchestra playing Mozart’s ‘Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in E-Flat Major’ with Jahja in August 2005 to great acclaim. She first discovered her love for the piano when she was four years old, just before entering The Yamaha Music School in Taipei, Taiwan. Later, Chang made her TV debut, appearing on Taiwan Central Television when she was ten years old. She received scholarships and graduated from The Manhattan School of Music where she received top honours as the best female pianist. With such a grandiose profile, this Christmas Concert is indeed an opportunity to celebrate Christmas in a memorable classical tradition. Make sure that you book a ticket immediately!

What music are you into at the moment? The Tallest Man On Earth, Arrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat and Singa.

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story about it?I can’t remember, really. Maybe...between Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Motley Crue or Bon Jovi. That was the music I listened to when I was a kid. I remember having a collection of tapes though. Most of them were rock and metal.

What is your all-time favourite album?Tough question. Joni Mitchell’s Blue is definitely one of them. The Beatles, Revolver album. Um, I don’t know. I get confused when I have to pick which music or what album is my favourite. Maybe it’s because I enjoy each one of them. And what I listen to is constantly changing. It’s all part of a process, really. And they’re all equally inspirational.

What was the worst record you ever purchased? The worst? Hmm, I don’t believe I have any. I’m quite selective in buying records.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate? If there is reincarnation I would want to be... I don’t know. Hahaha! I don’t want to be anybody else I guess, I just want to have the ability to change a few things in life. Some stories that I can change just to make it better, you know.

What album do you choose to start your weekend?Whichever album from The Tallest Man On Earth.

And song/album you choose to end your weekend?I always go for different albums, really. This weekend could be another album from The Tallest Man On Earth or Patrick Watson or Kurt Rosenwinkel, the next would be Latcho Drom, Explosions In The Sky or Grizzly Bear or Buena Vista Social Club or Arrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat and Singa or else. But recently I go for music that takes me straight to different places the second it’s played to my ears. All I have to do is just close my eyes and be someplace else. That’s my great escape.

2 tahun berselang, 2007, masih bersama Warner, diluncurkanlah album ketiga, SSSTTT!!.

The melodic punk outfit from Yogyakarta, Endank Soekamti, have just picked Semoga Kau di Neraka as their second single. Not only is the title a little in your face (it means “wish you were in hell”), but

the circumstances as to why it was chosen are a little unusual. They conducted a poll on social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter, hoping to gauge which song was considered the best to be the second single. And viola... As the second single, “Semoga Kau di Neraka”, has also made an impact on the ring tone sales, featuring even higher than their first single, “Audisi”.

So far Endank Soekamti has released 4 full-length albums. The first one, Kelas 1, was released in 2002 with help from Pongky Jikustik and Tony traX. The second, Pejantan Tambun, in 2005, and third, SSSTTT!!, in 2007, were both released under Warner Music Indonesia. In 2008 at the same time they quit from Warner, they started their own online radio: soekamti.com.

In 2010 they joined the Nagaswara label and in May released their fourth album, soekamti.com. A few days ago they finally decided to use ‘Semoga Kau di Neraka’ as their second single. Watch them live on Dec 19th at the 1000 Bands concert in Cibubur, or stay tuned with what they are doing via http://soekamti.com

Twitter 5 Pre-Sale Tickets, & The Power of Twitter

| 049beatmag.com

Puluhan ribu orang datang tiap harinya…

The power of Twitter! The magic work of social network!

Like it or not, you have to agree with the power of Twitter—or social networks, at least. Look what happened with Maroon 5. They are scheduled to play in Jakarta on April 27, 2011. Java Musikindo, the promoter, started promoting the concert a month ago and opened the sale of pre-sale tickets on Sunday, Dec 5 (note: Although the information about the pre-sale tickets was only published on Twitter and a few big banner ads, the 6000 tickets were sold out in less than 10 hours!

A similar thing happened a few months earlier, Java Musikindo sold pre-sale tickets for Pitbull, and 4,400 of them sold out in less than 24 hours. As with Maroon 5, Java Musikindo only promoted the pre-sale tickets via Twitter, and it worked really well. Who would’ve thought that Pitbull would get that awesome response from the public?

Java Musikindo is also using this strategy for the upcoming Deftones gig, scheduled to play in Jakarta on Feb 8. Their pre sale tickets were sold for one day on Nov 27, a few months before the gig. Although no proper data is published as to how many tickets were sold, if we look from the Twitter time line obviously the Deftones concert has created a lot of hype on that web platform.

Earlier in October, JavaRockin’Land already proved how effective this Twitter marketing can be. By creating its own account which people can follow and know what’s going on minute by minute with JavaRockin’Land (e.g. Smashing Pumpkins confirmed to play? When are the pre-sale tickets on sale?). The gig itself ended up a massive success. Almost 50,000 people came to witness the biggest rock concert in South East Asia. Maybe not all because of Twitter, but there’s no doubt that Twitter played a major role here.

Yes mister, the super power of Twitter!

ketjil kitchen

Most of the dishes are Western, but they do have some Indonesian food as well. We started with daddy’s big breakfast (30k); a hearty plate of scrambled eggs, toast, sausages, sautéed mushrooms, and tomatoes. It is a great way to start any day! If you love salads, go for the grandma’s salad (25k).

As for the main course, we decided on the yummy mummy lasagna (40k); an appetizing mix of lasagna, mozzarella cheese and rich béchamel sauce with minced beef and mushroom. Yummy indeed! It is easily one of the favourites here. They also have some tasty pasta. The fettuccine dory salt egg (37.5k) is another dish you should get stuck into. It’s an interesting mix of al dente fettuccine and

In a big city like Jakarta, we are spoilt for choice in terms of places to eat. However, it is always nice to find a new restaurant that not only

serves good food, but is also cozy and affordable. Welcome to Ketjil Kitchen, a new eatery in the Sudirman Commercial and Business District (SCBD). ‘Ketjil’ is an old spelling of ‘kecil’, meaning ‘little’.

It is indeed a smallish place, but it is as cozy as they come. When you walk in, you feel like you’re in the kitchen and dining room of someone’s house. Wood dominates the interior, and the kitchen utensils make you want to cook something yourself. But we’ll leave it to them to come up with the wonderful food! A couple of old vinyl records on the wall add a nice touch to the room.

dory fish mixed with salted egg - somehow it just works! Those who like it a little bit spicy will love the spaghetti tuna picante (28.5k)! The al dente spaghetti and tuna are mixed with tasty pesto sauce, with some chili added for just the right amount of kick!

If you’re a meat-and-potato type of person, we recommend the beef scallopine (55k); a combo of juicy beef and baby potatoes topped with some greens and little slices of cheese. For the young at heart, the chili silly dog (30k) will satisfy the inner kid in you!

For drinks, try the virgin mojito (22.5k) and ketjil punch (17.5k); both are really refreshing, but don’t forget to make room for their scrumptious desserts. The chocorico pudding (18k) and the apple crumble (20k) are the best sellers here.

For a small place, Ketjil Kitchen sure has a lot of choice on offer, and although fairly new, it has

become a popular place for lunch in SCBD for a lot of business people during the week, and families and weekenders congregating on Saturdays and Sundays. You can join their cooking classes on Saturdays, but be sure to book in advance, as there is limited space available!

We are sure that food-crazed Jakartans will love Ketjil Kitchen. As they say in their motto, “A sensational homey taste in every single bite”! We are looking forward to our next visit already.

There’s an exciting new player in town! (Well, it has been there for a while) The popular Indonesian edition of Rolling Stone magazine

is expanding their business with a café and restaurant. Located on Jalan Ampera near Kemang, Rolling Stone Café Jakarta looks impressive. Built like a modern glass house, the 2-storey eatery is certainly an attention-grabber. And that’s not just the exterior. You can choose to sit and dine indoor at the cozy lounge area, or al fresco on the terrace. With music at its core, Rolling Stone Café is definitely ready to rock the culinary scene of Jakarta.

Rolling Stone Café offers casual dining with top quality food and beverages such as wine and fusion cocktails, and with superb service and affordable prices, this restaurant is fast becoming a popular place to be in Jakarta.

| 061beatmag.com

Rolling Stone Café Jakarta | Jalan Ampera Raya No.16 Kemang, Jakarta | Phone: +62-21 782 2828 | Opening hours: 11am – 12am (weekdays) 11am – 2am (weekends)

Now let’s talk about the grub. We ordered the salmon fritters (39k) for appetizer; small, scrumptious breaded pieces of salmon served with chili and tomato sauce. We are off to a good start. This dish is one of the many ‘lounge tapas’ choices available here.

Next up, we decided on the seafood pizza (79k). From what we’d heard, this dish has become the new crowd favourite. It’s a delicious mix of fish, prawn, squid, anchovies, and basil with mozzarella cheese that will surely hit the spot. For you meat lovers, try the BBQ pizza (79k) that is generously topped with chopped meat, chorizo sausage, beef bacon, and chicken strips, with a tangy barbecue sauce.

However, our personal favourite was the rock n roll tenderloin (169k); 150 grams of grilled, tender Australian premium beef with red wine sauce on a bed of fondant potatoes. The small green salad and grilled tomatoes on the side add nice colours, and a few vitamins!

Seafood lovers will love the seared salmon fillet (89k); mouth-watering Cajun-marinated fillet of salmon, mashed potato, garlic bok choy and olive salsa with creamy mustard sauce.

Another ‘house specialty’ you should go for is the rolled Mexican style chicken (69k); flour tortilla, chicken strips, ‘dirty’ rice, mango salsa, and cheddar cheese sauce.

We ordered a couple of delectable desserts; the Rolling Stone cheese cake (49k), topped with blueberry sauce and peach, and the ‘kick andy’ bread pudding (49k), with orange sauce and Haagen Dazs rum raisin ice cream. Yummy!

Rolling Stone Café has an acoustic band playing every evening on the terrace area. They also have DJ performances playing mostly house and electro music. Quite often the place hosts major music events at the large outdoor area at the back of the café.

So, for a rockin’ good time, Rolling Stone Café is a great place to be!

Take a journey with these three blockbusters to get where you want to be! Be it playing with fire to clear your name of murder, cutting a few throats to get your dream home, or maybe dicing with death in the Bermuda Triangle... Solve the crime, chill your bones, and travel with a smile at www.blitzmegaplex.com!

The Girl Who Played WiTh Fire

Crime, Thriller. Director: Daniel Alfredson. Writer: Jonas Frykberg. Cast: Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist, Lena Endre.

The girl with the dragon tattoo (a.k.a Lisbeth Salander played by Noomi Rapace) is back, now to fight fire with fire. If you are a fan of Stieg Larsson’s Millenium Trilogy books and their first movie adaptation and sequel, you should be quite anxious to see this second sequel. Well, as the director for this one is different from the first sequel, be prepared to forget your expectations. The first sequel might have gripped us with its Agatha Christie like mystery atmosphere, but this second sequel is more likely to thrill with its crime action scenes and disclosure of Lisbeth’s family and past secrets. Be patient, after playing with fire in the last sequel, the girl will be back to kick the hornet’s nest in January 2011!

dream home

Drama, Slasher. Writer & Director: Ho-Cheung Pang. Cast: Josie Ho, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, and Michelle Ye.

For every gore and slasher fan out there, this acclaimed Asian ‘bloodiest’ film from Hong Kong is something you surely do not want to miss! The story is simple and engaging in its plotline of how far a middle-class Cantonese working woman will go to get her dream luxurious apartment with a view to the bay - even if means killing her would-be neighbors. Macau casino tycoon billionaire, Stanley Ho’s daughter, Josie Ho (winner of Best Actress for “Dream Home” at the Sitges Film Festival) plays a believable role of a sadist murderer/fragile driven woman. The combination of sympathizing drama and bone-chilling thrill ride will definitely make you shrink in your seat, so prepare for a blood bath on the screen!

Gulliver’s Travels

Adventure, Comedy. Director: Rob Letterman. Writer: Nicholas Stoller, Joe Stillman. Cast: Jack Black, Emily Blunt, Jason Segel,

Amanda Peet.

Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black, The School of Rock) adalah seorang petugas administrasi biasa di sebuah kantor majalah.

The poster itself shows a man getting tied up by a bunch of tiny people, and gives us an idea of how hilarious this movie will be; the Jack Black kind of hilarious! The story tells of how Gulliver gets assigned to cover a story on the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, but ends up stranded on the island of Liliput where he is a giant to the people of its kingdom. How the story ends isn’t what matters here; to see every scene with Black as a giant harrased by tiny people will surely crack a smile. With other hot players like Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), and Amanda Peet (Something’s Gotta Give), this movie is sure to tower over everything else this month!

Studio 133Studio 133

gives a touch of pop to the traditional heirloom

This year I got the chance to go to every show that Biyan hosted, from his main label Biyan, (X)S.M.L and lastly Studio 133 which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Biyan started Studio 133 25 years ago in his studio in Surabaya. The label was established in 1985 due to the demand from Pasaraya for “something more ready to wear but still with that luxe and elegant touch”. Biyan named it Studio 133 because that was the address number of his studio at that time.

Biyan said that we should never forget our traditional heritage, and that’s why you will always see Biyan collections drawing from the legacy of our traditional heritage and culture. In this particular collection, he’s add a pop touch to it so it’s more acceptable for the modern market. Like it or not, we can’t take tradition just ‘as is’. We can however bring it with us into the future coupled with some more forward thinking ideas.

The show for Studio 133 was held on the 24th November 2010 at Dharmawangsa Hotel carrying the theme of ‘Kolase Keanggunan‘. The collection presented a collage of different motifs referencing traditional floral batik, geometric batik and ikat mixed with modern twists such as polka dots, monochrome geometric shapes, painted checks and also more subtle oriental floral designs. These different patterns are combined with a variety of textiles and cuts that make them more wearable on their own or with each other.

Studio 133 collections not only mix different patterns together but also different fabrics. What I can’t get enough of is the beautiful silhouette created by the crepe de chine and the colour palette created with ombre tye dye. Refreshingly, chiffon is used for bottoms with different shapes, and light materials truly suggest both a carefree attitude with the right balanced neatness and elegance. Colourful matte beading and chunky accessories complete the collection.

Although modern seemed to be where this new collection was heading, the label’s signature kebaya was there to be seen on the runway. Made from organza with embroidery detailing, they are lightweight and wearable as a coat or jacket. Another signature is the jelaba which was reconstructed with different detailing and colour variants. The result is a chic maxi dress-like piece with protruding neckline.

For me personally, I can’t forget how the jelaba was mixed with a cotton lace mini dress/tunic top with a sash on the waist.

Bravo for Biyan! It has been quite a year for him and I can’t wait for next year when the cycle begins again and he previews every single collection from his different labels.

After 25 years of consistently promoting the beauty of our country through their makeup collections, Sariayu launched the newest collection yesterday and stated that this one is inspired by the rich cultural influences on Indonesia from all parts of Asia. As we all know, a lot of our art and culture was shaped from a mixture of local customs from other countries such as India, Melayu, The Middle East and China.Inspired by this cultural assimilation, Sariayu has created four different collections for its Tren Warna 25th Anniversary, with each collection symbolized by traditional instruments which were also influenced by these other countries. Petikan Sitar (influenced by India), Alun Serunai (influenced by Melayu), Dendang Rebana (influenced by the Middle East) and Denting Kecapi (influenced by China). What I love about this campaign is the fact that these collections were represented by models with very different looks and different skin tones. Finally! A local beauty brand using girls with tan and dark skin tones! I want to applaud Sariayu for doing this because we all know Indonesian women come in different shapes, sizes and skin colours, right? Also worth noting is that as per the previous collections Sariayu is partnering with WWF Indonesia to preserve Indonesia’s biodiversity by donating Rp 500 for each product sold. Each of these collections consist of one eye shadow palette, two lipsticks and one liquid lip colour. The eye shadows are infused with pomegranate extract which is an excellent source of antioxidant, while the lipsticks contain mineral amethyst powder which they claim can help protect lips and reduce signs of external damage while improving blood circulation on the lips. It also contains vitamin E which can help moisten dry lips.

“Tracing TranquiliTy”

From one canvas to another, there is only one single object that you will always see in his work: Borobudur. This massive Buddhist

monument is Rudolf G. Usman’s main theme in his debut solo exhibition at Gallery Elcanna.

He is known as an artist that is strongly committed to artistic experimentation and innovation. More than just mere portraits of Borobudur and of Buddha, Rudolf also uses these images as a medium to express his inner thoughts.

Rudolf’s dedication of exploration is shown by using non-traditional approaches of painting by combining the use of watercolor, acrylic, collage, gold sheets, mirror, and coins. His dedication to his profession as an artist can be clearly seen in this exhibition, as his use of many different kinds of mediums employed in his pieces express his intrinsic value upon art.

If you happen to be an art lover as well as a dog lover, you will love Zhou Chunya’s works of art that come all the way from China. The exhibition which takes place at the Fang

Gallery titled, “Green Dog” exhibits green dog sculptures that are made from bronze, stainless steel and fiberglass. Zhou Chunya has worked on these canine works of art for over a decade. The dogs featured in this exhibition are depicted in all kinds of moods and postures that are both life like and comical at the same time. A sculpture of a pair of big green dogs both with a huge happy yet silly grins sit together with their protruding tongues hanging low. To add to the comical sense of the two dogs, one looks slightly out of breath compared to his partner whose smile is somewhat conniving in a way. Many of his pieces feature dogs in a somewhat human kind of aspect. As one of the most important contemporary neo-expressionist painters from China, Zhou Chunya never wishes to be categorized to any particular style or group. You now feel a strong pull towards something new and different in your life. Not only do you have a better chance of success, but the fun and enthusiasm is infectious. If you are given a chance be sure to make the most of it, with dedication you'll have success. A newcomer may stir your interest in a particular subject or will reignite an old flame. If you are determined to make your mark and impress others, take care of your image. If you have been feeling emotionally neglected or physically isolated, expect the void to be filled. You are emerging from an emotional cloud and, with Venus in your sign, will enjoy harmony and happiness. Something that was not to your liking could take on a new slant, when you realise the full potential of the offer.

Present time will boost your ego and enthusiasm, and a venture you start will be both successful and satisfying. If you feel young at heart, it suggests that a night out is the ideal setting for locking eyes with your lover. The energy is fairly light-hearted and you will fare better if you skim the surface of the situation. Creativity and colours are sure to grab your eye and you will do something wonderful with them. If you feel emotionally isolated or physically tried, indulge yourself and nurture your own needs.

Your changeable attitude and ability to see how fortunes are being made will lead to very successful decisions.

Don’t let emotional matters hold you back. Focus on where the money is and how you can make more of it. A sudden change in a partnership may surprise you, but the end result will be to your advantage. Refine your thoughts, review current obligations and consult with close ones about future financial situations. Financially stop talking about what you want to do and start doing things to increase your wealth. Use this period to study situations that can open new doors to opportunities for you financially. Your ideas will be on grand scale, but your means and abilities to carry them out may not be enough. Don’t make a commitment just yet. You'll be highly tuned to the material world and you will also have a greater awareness of your body's needs at this time. This period begins with you resolving to make more money and achieve more success, but not until you've had a chance to bargain-hunt. Financial goals can be reached with some planning. An urge to own things, rather than rent or window shop is growing stronger. Material issues come to the forefront and the message is you must be shrewd to succeed. Material comfort and personal happiness will be high on your list of priorities, and the more monotonous chores should be put on the backburner. You can expect to have the last laugh when slowly but surely others warm to your plans.

This is your time to shine and there will be more money coming your way to support your plans and goals. You might opt for a mini-makeover or break or seek out that promotion, pay increase or luxury purchase. Financially, you'll need to draw the line with a special occasion or gift before it gets out of control. It is a period that is filled with many exciting and wonderful opportunities. Be prepared to grab success and ride it into the future with enthusiasm. You'll be in a money-making mode. If you follow through, the accomplishment you make will be lucrative. Planets usher in many wonderful opportunities, though you need to pick and choose with care. You should get the financial ball rolling now or you could miss out on an opportunistic investment, income boost or creative enterprise.

Perfect time for catching up on old email or other messages that need replies. Every now and then you need to just clear them all away, even if that means just deleting and forgetting about them. It's a good time to sit down and rethink recent developments. Your ability to focus is strong and you ought to be able to figure out a few new angles that will make you glad you spent the time. Your opinions are hardly set in stone, though you do like to see hard evidence before changing your mind -- that is to say, you're eminently sensible. You meet someone new who turns you around on some subject. Emails are efficient and convenient, but the best way to get across a message is still to talk it out in person.

You've plenty to say right now and exactly the right words to say it. It's a great time to communicate your needs to whom ever is at hand -- they are much more likely to be receptive to your needs. You may need to make a few calls or send a few emails to track down that one person you need to reach. If it's a long-lost relative, you may surprise your family with your tenacity and resourcefulness! Your way with words is quite powerful now and you may find it much simpler to communicate your feelings and ideas, especially if you take a bit of time to focus your thoughts before proceeding. Try not to let other people interfere with your plans -- as long as you are able to express yourself clearly, you should be able to get your way.

A softening of your stance or views helps you see someone in a more positive light. You are among the lucky one, you may cash in on someone's absence, blunder or cancelled deal. Because you are in an affable life cycle, there will be no malice in information exchanged or passed on to others. Start by discussing your concerns and follow up with direct action. Planet is about to impact positively on relationships. An opportunity may present itself and while you are realistic about the temporary nature of it, you will be powerless to resist. Contact with someone you've been struggling to stay in touch with will open communication lines. You are in a caring sharing cycle and rather than shooting from the hip, you will wisely consult with others before making major decisions.

Romance and love relationships are strongly favoured this period and you can make use of the awareness that surrounds you to enhance your love life. Show them some sensitivity and generosity and they will do the same for you if the tables are turned. Do as you would be done to. Nothing is more important to you than a fillip of gossip and you seek the company of people who share your gift of gab. Now is not the time to procrastinate, but to take action and work on your plans and ideas for excellent results. A trip will take you to a place that will inspire you to move forward with financial plans that you have been contemplating. A certain amount of travel is indicated and something that you have been longing for will happen at this time. Your persuasive ability will help you gain the support you need. A trip will lead to someone from your past.

May 21 - June 21

Aug 23 - Sept 22

April 21 - May 20 March 21 - April 20

June 22 - July 22 July 23 - August 22

You’ll find the perfect time and words to settle into your relationship zone. A new phase in communication in your close relationships makes it easier to get your message or point across. You have the way with words and your loved ones are likely to bring out the best in you. Rather than insisting on the last word, let others have their say and make rational decisions. Those closest to you will be exceptionally talkative and mobile. Allow others to express ideas and brainstorm. The results you show will be impressive and could catch the eye of people in your environment. Planets ensure free-flowing communication, especially with friends, siblings and neighbours. You’re more of a homebody than usual now.

Home, family or domestic concerns are in the focus and communication is very important at this time, so don’t just be talkative, be clear. You will have to be willing to hear what loved ones have to say before making your final decisions in regards to home and family. Arrangement may be changed to suit loved ones and although flexibility is not your strong point, the majority will rule. You will be able to stay on top of things and situations on the home front and be able to make a good impression with family members. Logical discussions and communication take place allowing compromises to be reached with family members and property interests. When in doubt, seek advice, suggestions and input from family members or elderly relatives.

A good time to fix up your house or scout real estate for a move at a later date. Home is where you are happiest, and that’s where the energy is right now. You’ll come across the perfect item or perhaps welcome back a favourite friend or relative. An overdue family get-together will be a simple, sweet joy. Try to maintain the momentum! A get-together with someone you once shared a close connection with could finally happen. You could spend big on a family member or special plans. Watch the tendency to spend spontaneously through. Plan some light hearted interludes with friends and family; fun activities that are relaxing and absorbing. Someone close may do something for you that you desire, or you could receive a gift you prize.

An increase in your popularity or a demonstration of appreciation by loved ones will boost your flagging self-esteem. Friends and family members will play an important part, providing you with emotional and practical support. While in a nurturing mood, you may pour love on relatives or help the less fortunate. A family matter will finally be resolved and you will be quite happy. Friends and family members will make the best companions, while familiar surroundings ideally suit you confidence. Close co-operation with your friends and family members will reap rich emotional rewards. You might entertain relatives; otherwise very close friends whom you consider to be your extended family will be in touch.

Stick to tried and true methods rather than experimenting with new ideas or straying far from home. You will feel fuzzy towards certain family members and your tolerance level for wayward relatives will be low. Have faith in the people around you and belief in yourself, especially when it appears things are not going your way. Family matters may bring some inner worries for you and perhaps it is time for you to say how you really feel. Domestic issues are likely to be your number-one priority, with you having to take extra responsibility and decisions. There may be a blast from the past and you will re-establish contact with an estranged friend or family member. As much as you like to take control of your environment, it looks like events will be out of your hands. Be careful lest you set your standards too high and wind up living alone.

Pay attention to the people in your family. They may be going through some rough times and you won’t notice unless you really probe and ask how they’re doing. You are likely to learn that privacy and more down time are good for your soul, and some of you will be learning to get over your fears of being alone. You need to deal with home repair or bad-neighbour issues, which could make for a less than charming situation. Still, once you’ve faced them, things ought to settle down for a little while. At home, family members are likely to encounter poor health. Keep a close eye on elderly family members who are ailing, lest their health take a turn for the worse. Depending on your own personal family set-up, that person may already have let you know that you’re needed, or they may be suffering stoically in silence, leaving you with no idea that your help is required.

There may be an urge to live in the moment and be less inclined to worry about trivial issues. You will be happiest when you feel loved and needed, hence you should mix with people who hold you in high regard.

Uncertainty and delays have several advantages, they finally enable you to get to the bottom of complex problem. Your wisdom and foresight can be used in positive ways by passing on advice to others or avoiding past mistakes. A twist of fate or common sense decision helps to make your life easier or happier. If you've been bewildered about something or someone, you'll feel more certain about what action to take. Your self-awareness is finely tuned and you have the ability to pull ideas, resolutions and tactics out of the air. You will want to get ahead and will figure quick and clever ways to get around things. Take your time when it comes to making important decisions, as you will need to be comfortable with the outcome.

You may discover that your suspicions, fears or worries were unfounded and your anxiety levels will plummet. Pause and reflect on aspects of your life that need to be developed or improved. It may be time to mention something that you've been keeping to yourself. You will be feeling stronger and more able to communicate. Your intuition will be spot-on, so use it to sort out any issues that have recently held you back, or confused you. A window of opportunity is about to open, allowing you to expand on an idea or network with new people. There may be some doubters to deal with, but you will put forward a convincing plan or argument. People you enjoy spending time with bring you out of your shell and validate the choices you made.

Financially, no matter how much opposition there may be to your ideas, you will persevere and succeed in achieving your ways. A perfect time to examine financial and investment strategies and review situations. Respectively, you have a chance to put your talent and intelligence to the test in boosting your financial income. There is a lot of interesting and invigorating information available to you to build up on your finances. Follow your financial instincts without being distracted, as something exciting could happen to influence an important financial decision.

You will discover that you are worth more and may be able to get the same results on your own.

Capricorn

These family feuds can even cross generations. If you and someone in your family are at loggerheads, there’ll rarely be a better time to ditch the baggage! Concentrated effort, revival, taking away and alterations, anything to do with check ups, intimacy or therapy, all will go well at this time. Creativity at work should be enhanced. Take advantage of any opportunity that enables you to work from home, either on a temporary or permanent basis. Family members might be asking for your time and attention. Don’t expect more from love than it can deliver. You’re somewhat concerned about your family. In a strange sort of way, you feel as if they have abandoned you, and that hurts. But don’t let it eat you up!

You’re playing a protective role in the world and you’re likely to be popular. Family affairs and situations are well starred. Are you facing a deluge of tasks that desperately need to be done around the house? You might find this rather daunting and somewhat depressing, especially since you could use a little rest. Home and personal life should benefit as this would be a great time to catch up on DIY jobs or redecorate the home. Family concerns petition your time, and it’s a fair bet that someone close will need a helping hand. Compassion will be your keyword. You will be less concerned with materialistic values and more concerned with helping friends, family, in fact, anyone in need. You can do some solid planning and organizing at home.

You will have more than your share of responsibilities at home - balancing it won’t be easy. A family war brewing, or the possibility that you’ll need to serve as intermediary in a dispute. Challenges are likely to come in the form of family or relationship responsibilities. Matters outside the home and your personal space will take on greater importance. You are in a dilemma about the right course of action to take regarding a family squabble or relation. Minor domestic annoyances are likely. Rise above it, and give yourself some private time to clear your head. At home, there will be surprise visitors and up and down family dynamics that need soothing or resilient approach. On the home front your hands will be full. A family event you’ve been working towards could finally take place.

Keep the lid on any rough games around the house - you could suffer broken windows or problems with the neighbours. Relationships, there are awkward and even stressful issues to deal with and you’ll have to keep your wits about you. Closed ones and family members will have may have good intentions, but your patience is likely to wear thin. Let it be known that you appreciate love and support, but that you also need your own space. Domestic and family issues should be the top priority at the start of this period. Steer clear of controlling types in the work place and family members who insist they know what is best. If you insist on forcing a loved one’s hand, hostility could creep into a close relationship.

Staying close to home is going to be best for your morale - you are still in a mood to ignore the external world, and that’s okay. Obeying your mood is usually a very harmonious way to live your life, although it’s not always practical. You would much rather stay at home than go out. Puttering around and taking care of little chores will be much more tantalizing to you than the prospect of going out and painting the town red. It’s not that you are feeling shy or socially inhibited. You can keep moving along and your positive spirit keeps you enthused even about taking care of small tasks. If your family needs inspiration, you’ve got plenty -- and it keeps coming! Attending a family gathering will give you a fresher perspective on your life.

Your moods and feelings are strong and you may feel quite contented. Activities around the home and family affairs turn out well. You should be feeling especially energetic and enthusiastic. Therefore, this is great to start a new enterprise, perhaps involving your home. You’re playing a protective role in the world and you’re likely to be popular. Family affairs and situations are well starred. Your moods and feelings are strong and you may feel quite contented. Activities around the home and family affairs turn out well. Try to spend time engaged in useful pursuits. Set smaller goals for yourself, like tidying up the house or doing some vigorous exercise. Have you become a little bit idle around the household chores recently? Even the most committed of sofa lovers could get a pang of guilt and decide to do something more active.

You would think that with the name Bakers Corner, you’d only be getting your daily bread in this place, and you wouldn’t be wrong to an extent because that’s

those wanting a drink with a little more kick will have to look elsewhere as this is a family restaurant so the only booze you might come across is a beer. If you happen to be craving a caffeine fix, the choices of chilled or hot caffeinated beverages will surely complete you. Amongst the choices available on the menu, we were lucky enough to sample the latest Indonesian selection recently added to the menu. The Ayam Kremes or crispy chicken (Rp50K) is a traditional delicacy from the island of Java with a modern twist, featuring a large chicken quarter enveloped in a crunchy batter served with rice, fried tofu, raw vegetables and spicy sambal to excite the palette. The second meal we sampled was the crispy duck (Rp80K), a quite revered Balinese specialty consisting of half a duck marinated in traditional herbs and spices and fried to a crisp on the outside yet still juicy inside. As all local meals are served, you also get rice, sambal and vegetables to accompany the meal. Both meals are quite filling and sure to satisfy anyone’s hunger. Never wanting to leave our whistles dry, to quench our thirst we sampled the blueberry smoothie (Rp31.5K) which was refreshing and tasted very healthy, if you can imagine a flavour like that. For our caffeine fix we chose a creamy and chilled mocha chip (Rp25K) which tasted more like a dessert than a drink but was still a good caffeine high. To round the whole meal off, we sampled the Bakers Corner es special (Rp30.5K), which was filled with fresh fruit and crushed ice and topped with sweetened condensed milk and sweet strawberry syrup. The desert maybe a little too sweet for a Westerner’s tongue, but is quite pleasing for any sweet tooth addict out there, especially on a boiling hot day. If you happen to be heading far from the beaches of Kuta and decide to venture to Denpasar, Bakers corner is sure to provide you with whatever kind of meal you may be searching for. And why not grab some of the freshly baked offerings before you leave to remind you that you just came out of a bakery.

Kama SutraSaturday27 Nov

Fans of the lovely Sherina Munaf and rock band Cokelat converged on Kama Sutra on Saturday night to see both of their favourite performers take to

the stage. The night was kicked off with Cokelat rocking their new formation, while fans cheered and sang along to many old hits performed by the band. Not long after Sherina graced the stage her many young fans turned the crowd into a hysterical frenzy as they enjoyed the whole performance.

Sherina Munaf + Cokelat

A hoard of clubbers made their way to Hard Rock Café to see the Queen of Drum n Bass, DJ Rap take to the stage and spin out

her hits. The night was kicked off by DJ Anastasia before the main event, warming up the crowd with her psychedelic mixes. There wasn’t a wallflower in the house the moment DJ Rap took her spot in the DJ Booth, as the whole crowd made their way to the dance floor to get down and dirty to her beats.

Romeo Playground

2nd Classical Concert

The night’s entertainment may only have been filled by resident DJs, but the relentless crowd of late night clubbers still made their way to

Deejay Club to continue on partying until the break of dawn. The event was titled ‘Romeo Playground’, with hopeful Romeos scouring the crowd in search for would be Juliets. Some were successful, but the rest just enjoyed an evening of great beats.

The beautiful sounds of a violin plus the romantic ambiences from the piano, coupled with the tenor

voice from Tarik brought a classical nuance to JP’s. Once again Erik Sondhy and friends presented a successful mini classical concert which was greeted with much applause from those present that evening. So amazing was the night that the end of the performance was greeted with a standing ovation.

It’s a Celebration

Peter Kruder Returns

Every year Levi’s holds a party to celebrate its long existence, and this year ViAiPi was chosen as the base. The night was kicked off

by DJ Jessica along with MC Vibes warming up the crowd before the main event. The long awaited performance of Jakarta’s DJ Winky Junko brought the crowd, packing the dance floor to full capacity.

It may be a seasonal thing, but Peter Kruder once again returned to perform in Bali without the assistance of DJ partner Dorfmeister.

News of his return spread like wild fire as a crowd of around 400 clubbers made their way to SOS to catch the sounds of Kruder as well as get wild on the dance floor. With slight touches of jazz it was a great evening of solid tunes.

So Hyper

Friday Night

Young Aussie tiger, Mike Hyper knows Bali pretty well having

had a few stints in these parts over recent years. He put that knowledge to good use at Hu’u, which appears to be becoming the Hip Hop joint of Seminyak at this time. Why not, it’s all good.

The Beat Radio Plus got together with Warisan restaurant last

week to hold an Indian night and evening out. 98.5’s regular lad, DJ Mamsa was down with dengue on the night, and so his position was masterfully filled by DJ Donni One from KuDeTa. Great set, Don! Pretty chilled affair, but fun...
