Invitations merupakan undangan yang diberikan seseorang kepada orang lain untuk menghadiri sebuah acara penting, misalnya perayaan ulang tahun, ulang tahun perkawinan, kelahiran anak, kelulusan sekolah, perpisahan, dan hari jadi perusahaan atau instansi.

Dalam invitations biasanya ditulis tentang orang yang diundang, acara undangan, waktu (hari, tanggal,jam), tempat, pesan, serta orang yang mengundang.

Labels adalah keterangan yang terdapat di bagian luar kemasan sebuah produk atau barang, Di label produk biasanya terdapat kalimat yang menunjukkan keunggulan produk, petunjuk penggunaan, komposisi produk, serta indikasi.

CONTOH

ADVERTISEMENTAdvertisements (iklan)adalah pemberitahuan yang bertujuan untuk mendorong, membujuk khalayak ramai untuk membeli atau menggunakan barang atau jasa yang ditawarkan. Iklan biasanya di media massa seperti media cetak/elektronik (koran, majalah, tabloid) atau di tempat umum, seperti baliho, billboard, dan pamflet.

Ada berbagai bentuk iklan, yaiyu iklan produk, baik barang atau jasa, serta iklan lowongan pekerjaan.

CONTOH

LETTERSLetters (surat) adalah pesan tertulis dengan berbagai isi dan maksud yang dikirim kepada seseorang. Surat biasanya dimasukkan kedalam amplop dan dibubuhi perangko sebelum dikirim.

E-mail adalah surat yang dikirim melalui internet

Surat terdiri atas dua macam, yaitu surat pribadi dan surat bisnis/formal

Bagian-Bagian SuratAlamat pengirim surat (the sender’s address)

Tanggal penulisan surat (the date of writing the letter)

Alamat orang yang dituju (the inside address

Salam pembuka (salutation/greeting)

Isi surat (the body of the letter)

Thanks for the e-mail that you sent a week ago. Sorry for writing back so late because I’ve been very busy from all tge school’s assignment. There is so much to do because the new semester has just started! It is interesting to read about your plan in joining a course to improve your English this semester. If you don;t mind I would like to suggest you a course to join. It is Oak Tree, a homey education centre. It’s a place not only to improve your skill in English but also to have a music lesson. DESCRIPTIVETeks descriptive adalah teks yang bertujuan untuk mendiskripsikan suatu benda, tempat, atau orang tertentu.

Ciri-ciri Teks Descriptive:

Menggunakan the simple present tense.

Menggunakan attribute verb, seperti be (is, am, are).

Struktur Teks Descriptive

Identification (identifikasi): pendahuluan tentang apa dan siapa yang akan dideskripsikan.

Description (deskripsi): berisi ciri-ciri khusus yang dimiliki benda, tempat, atau orang yang dideskripsikan

CONTOHMost people in the world have a pet. I also have it. My pet is a dog, name Miko. Its color is brown. It has brown eyes, too. I got this pet from my friend at the beginning of 2009. He bought it from a pet shop in his country. Once a week, my brother bathes him. He is funny and smart. It often plays with my neighbour’s dog. I love him very much because he can be my friend, too

CONTOH“The earth’s greatest gorge”, the Grand Canyon, is located in Morthwestern Arizona, Its vastness is 217 mile long, and its width spans over 17 miles across. It is not surprising that it has been designated one of the Seven Wonders of the world.

The walls of the canyon are made of limestone, sandstone, lava and other rocks. As the day passes the rocks reflect different colors. Many tourists come to the canyon just to watch the rocks change color.

Cottonwood and willow trees grow at the bottom of the canyon. Many varieties of cactus grow here as well. The canyon is also home to many animals, such as bobcats, coyotes, kangaroo rats and deers.

Today about 4 million visitors come to the Grand canyon each year. Seeing the Grand Canyon is always a breathtaking and unforgettable experience.

PROCEDURE

Teks procedure bertujuan menerangkan bagaimana membuat/melakukan sesuatu berdasarkan serangkaian langkah atau kegiatan (steps).

Ciri-Ciri Teks Procedure

Menggunakan the Simple present tense, biasanya berbentuk kalimat imperatif.

Menggunakan kata hubung temporal, seperti: first, second, then, next, finally.

Menggunakan action verbs, seperti yurn on, stir, cook.

Struktur Teks ProcedureAim/goal (tujuan): dapat berupa judul.

Materials: bahan dan alat yang diperlukan. Namun, tidak semua teks procedure memerlukan tahap ini. Bagian ini dapat diberi label “you’ll need”, “ingredients”, atau “supplies needed”.

Steps: langkah-langkah untuk melakukan kegiatan (teks procedure). Bagian ini juga dapat diberi label “what to do”.

CONTOH

It is easy to fall asleep easily.

Follow these steps.

First, lay your body down in a comfortable sofa.

Then, read something that entertain you.

After that, drink a glass of hot milk.

Next, you’ll feel so sleepy

Finally, have a nice dream, no snoring, Ok?

REPORT

Teks report adalah teks yang mendeskripsikan sesuatu/benda-benda secara umum, misalnya berbagai benda/fenomena alam, buatan, dan sosial yang ada atau terjadi di lingkungan kita.

CIRI-CIRI TEKS REPORT

Menggunakan the Simple present tense, kecuali apabila sudah punah menggunakan past tense.

Menggunakan action verbs, misalnya: surround, make, begin, etc.

STRUKTUR TEKS REPORT

General classification (klasifikasi umum): pengantar tentang sesuatu/fenomena yang akan dibahas.

Description (deskripsi): menerangkan sesuatu/fenomena yang dibahas, meliputi bagian-bagian, kualitas, dan perilaku.

CONTOHA storm is a disturbance of the ordinary conditions

of the atmosphere accompanied by wind, rain, snow, sleet, hail (frozen rain), or thunder and lightning. Types of storms include the extra tropical cyclone, the common, large-scale strom of temperate latitude; the tropical cyclone, or hurricane, which is somewhat smaller in area than the former and accompanied by high winds and heavy rains; the tornado, or “twister,” a samll but intense storm with very high winds, usually of limited duration; and the thunderstorm, local in nature and accomapnied by brief but heavy rain showers and often by hail. The term storm is also applied to blizzards, sandstorms, and dust storm, in which high wind is the dominan meteorological element.

NARRATIVE

Teks narrative adalah teks yang menceritakan sesuatu yang imajinatif atau khayalan belaka. Tujuannya untuk menghibur pembaca.

CIRI-CIRI TEKS NARRATIVE

Menggunakan past tenses.

Biasanya dimulai dengan adverbs of time (kata keterangan waktu) seperti long time ago, once upon a time, in a faraway land.

Menggunakan kata hubung (conjunction), seperti then, after that, before.

STRUKTUR TEKS NARRATIVE

Orientation (pendahuluan cerita): memperkenalkan tokoh-tokoh dalam cerita, latar, dan waktu.

Complication: munculnya permasalahan diantara tokoh-tokoh tersebut.

Resolution: masalah dapat diatasi.

Re-orientation (optional).

CONTOHThe Wolf and The Goat

A wolf saw a goat grazing at the edge of a high cliff. The wolf smacked his lips at the though of a fine goat dinner.

“My dear friend,” said the wolf in his sweetest voice, aren’t you afraid you will fall down from the cliff? Come down here and graze on this fine grass beside me on safe, level ground.”

“No, thank you,” said the goat.

“Well then,” said the wolf, “aren’t you cold up there in the wind? You would be warmer grazing down here beside me in this sheltered area.”

“No, thank you,” said the goat.

“But the gress tastes better down here!” said the exasperated wolf, “Why dine alone?”

“My dear wolf,” the goat finally said, “are you quite sure that it is My dinner you are worrying about and not your own?”

RECOUNT

Teks recount bercerita tentang kejadian/peristiwa yang telah berlalu/lampau, biasanya tentang pengalaman pribadi penulis

CIRI-CIRI TEKS RECOUNT

Menggunakan past tense,

Menggunakan kata hubung (conjunctions), misalnya: then, before, after.

STRUKTUR TEKS RECOUNT

Orientation (orientasi): berisi pendahuluan tentang tokoh yang ada dalam cerita tersebut, peristiwa yang terjadi, tempat dan waktu peristiwa itu terjadi.

Events: berisi jalinan peristiwa/kejadian yang ada dalam cerita pengalaman tersebut. Bagian ini bisa terdiri atas beberapa event/peristiwa.

Re-Orientation: berisi tentang rakuman/penutup cerita.

CONTOHEly Anita thought about finding a proper job when she

was 16. She lived in a country where the unemployment rate was quite high and competition to get a job was very difficult.

In 1997, she landed in Malysia to take her first job as a baby sitter. Staying there for two years, she described her first experience as “quite good”. Then she returned home for two months before moving to Hongkong.

In this new country, Ely was employed as an assistant to a hairstylist at a beauty salon. Based on the contract, she had to work there for two years, but after nine months, she decided to quit the job, breaking the work contract because she was underpaid and got no holidays from employer.
