    A DIY Guide to

    The building o the Southern RidgesThe Southern Ridges was one oseveral areas in Singapore targeted orpreservation. A plan to improve accessto and connectivity within this 9kmchain o hills by building a series opedestrian linkages to connect MountFaber, Telok Blangah Hill and Kent Ridgewas developed. The Southern Ridges was

    opened to the public in 2008.

    The Marang trail begins right ater you step o theescalator exiting rom Harbourront MRT Station (ExitD) near Marang Road. This trail leads you to the cablecar station at the Jewel Box on Mount Faber.

    Embark on this walk o steps and shaded ootpathsthat pave the way to beautiul sights and sounds othe secondary orest. Enjoy the peace and tranquilityo nature as you jog or walk on this trail. Listen to theloud chirping o cicadas that break the silence o the

    orest. Cicadas live on the tuip tuip tree, the dominanttree in the adinandra belukar, making loud matingcalls to attract emales. I you are lucky, you canspot the drongo, yellow oriole and other birds in thelush greenery.

    At the top o the Trail is the Jewel Box, an F&Bestablishment comprising bars, restaurants and variousentertainment options on Mount Faber. Chill out witha beer or have an ice cream as you enjoy a panoramicview o the harbour and southern islands rom dierentvantage points. You can also get to Sentosa Island romthe Jewel Box in a cable car.

    Do note that the Marang Trailcovers an elevation o 70 metres

    (or the equivalent o a 24-storeybuilding), so this trail maynot be suitable or youngchildren, the elderly andthe less t.

    The Marang Trail is deliberately unlitater dark to minimize disturbanceto nocturnal life in the forest. Dobring along a torch and take extraprecautions i you wish to walk onthis trail ater dark.

    Some common tree species you cansee on this trail:

    Angsana tree - a common, fast-growing tree in this region.

    S aga Tree - its seeds are commonlypicked and used in jewellery andartwork; popular or their bright redcolour that symbolizes passion andeverlasting love.

    At the end o Marang Trail lies Faber Walk. I you wish togive Marang Trail a miss and head straight or Faber Walk,you can get your transport to drop you o at Mount FaberRoad, or park at one o the car parks at Mount Faber Park.

    Faber Walk, o which many parts are sheltered, meandersthrough Mount Faber Park and ends at the start oHenderson Waves. The slopes o this 56-hectare park arecovered by dense secondary rain orest, and are home toan amazing array o fora and auna.

    The trail, which takes you on a loop around the peak oMount Faber Hill, oers spectacular views o the southernpart o Singapore and the Southern Islands. For a close-upview, use one o several telescopes situated at Palm Plazaand along some parts o the trail. You can catch sight opassing ocean liners and cruise ships in the ar distance.This trail will also take you to small landmarks at MountFaber including the Merlion Sculpture and the DanishSeamans Church.

    At night, the park is one o the more popular romanticspots on the island. Join several couples and amilies inenjoying breathtaking sights o the citys twinkling lights.

    The naming o Mount Faber

    In 1823, Sir Stamord Rafes gave ordersor the removal o the ormer Chie othe Island, Temenggong Abdul Rahman,a prince o the House o Johore. Togetherwith his ollowers, he was moved lock,stock and barrel to Telok Blangah.

    The Temenggong and his entourage wereallotted space along the beach rom

    Tanjong Pagar to Telok Blangah coveringan estimated 200 acres o ground.

    At the same time, one o the rst westernmerchants, a native o Scotland namedAlexandra Guthrie, acquired a piece oland behind Telok Blangah Hill.

    Prior to this the site was known as TelokBlangah Hill.

    The park was renamed ater CaptainCharles Edward Faber, a British engineerwho cut a road up to the summit in 1845to set up a signal post. This ship to shore

    communication post was constructed todirect ships through the water channels.This Signal Post was eventually demolishedduring the redevelopment in 1994 due tothe unstable condition o the structure.

    Henderson Waves is a stones throw rom F aberWalk. You can also park at Mount Faber Carpark D.Alternatively, take the staircase rom Henderson Roadup to Mount Faber Park.

    Admire the beautiul skyline as you stroll across this 274metre-long pedestrian bridge that spans Henderson Roadto connect Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park.

    The bridge is also worth visiting or its artistic,distinctive wave-like structure consisting o a serieso undulating curved ribs. These ribs also doubleup as alcoves providing shelter to the public. Slatso yellow bakau wood, an all-weather timber oundin South-East Asia, are used in the decking.

    Joggers, couples and amilies with children area common sight on Henderson Waves duringweekends. The bridge has also become a popularphotography location in recent months or weddingcouples posing against the scenic skyline.

    The bridge takes on a dierent look at night, withthe wave-form illuminated with attractive LED lightrom 7pm to 2am daily.

    From Henderson Waves, you can continue on to HilltopWalk that runs through Telok Blangah Hill Park. This parkwas once a gathering place or trading communitiesin the area in the early nineteenth century. This is aneasy trail to walk on as you will be walking downhilluntil you reach Terrace Garden.

    Make your way to the top o the park via TerraceGarden and stop or a moment to enjoy a stunning360-degree view o Singapore and the decks obougainvillea at the Garden.

    From Hilltop Walk, you can proceed to Forest Walk eitherby walking along the main road or through the TerraceGarden at Hilltop Walk. I you wish to begin your SouthernRidges Walk at Forest Walk, you can park at Carpark 3 onTelok Blangah Hill Park. There are two trails on the ForestWalk (just cross over rom Carpark 3 to get on either trail) the Elevated Walkway and the Earth trail.

    The Elevated Walkway, accessed by the metal bridge,oers you the experience o walking through thesecondary orest o Telok Blangah Hill at eye-level withthe orest canopy.

    On the right o Carpark 3, steps going down lead you tothe Earth trail. I you preer a more rugged experience,this is the trail or you. Steps have been built at someparts o the trail in view o the steep terrain.

    The dense secondary orest ound here, the adinandrabelukar, is home to Singapores rich biodiversity. TheDillenia, also referred to as the rojak tree, is one ofseveral native trees that are prominent here.

    The triangular metal gratings on thefoor o the elevated walkway were aninspiration rom the triangular-shapedleaves o the ast-growing Mile-a-Minute plant that grows reely in theorest. These gratings have closer gapsto prevent wheels o baby prams andwheelchairs rom getting stuck.

    The Elevated Walkway is an excellentplatorm or spotting birds, dragonfiesand butterfies.

    Look out or the pink-necked greenpigeon, yellow-vented bulbul, commoniora, brown-throated sunbird, black-naped oriole, spotted dove and straw-headed bulbul.

    Conceptualised as a Gateway to Nature, AlexandraArch links Forest Walk and Floral Walk.

    Walk on this 80m long bridge and admire its uniquearchitecture - it looks like an opened lea across AlexandraRoad, with its curved deck intersecting an arch that istilted at a 70-degree angle.

    Like Henderson Waves, Alexandra Arch is lit up by LEDlights at night. The lights change colour at intervalsrom 7pm to 12am daily, displaying varying shades romthe colour spectrum o dusk to complement the nature

    settings o the orested hill parks nearby.

    At the back o HortPark is a gate that leads to a parkconnector linking HortPark and Kent Ridge Park. You canreach Canopy Walk via this park connector. Alternatively,i you wish to start your walk at Canopy Walk, you canhead straight or Kent Ridge Park by alighting at any othe three spots - by bus at South Buona Vista Road (aterwhich you proceed by foot via Vigilante Drive); at the endo Science Park; at Pasir Panjang Road (ater which youproceed by oot via Pepys Road).

    Kent Ridge Park stands out rom other parks in that itsdesign takes ull advantage o the sites surroundingnatural vegetation and topography. Breathe in the reshair and enjoy panoramic views rom the ridge.

    The Canopy Walk is the other trail on the Southern Ridgesthat oers you the experience o walking through asecondary orest at eye-level with the orest canopy.This is a 280-metre long boardwalk that links Kent RidgePark to the museum Refections o Bukit Chandu.

    Listen out or the sounds o birds and insects breakingthe silence and serenity o the park on the Canopy Walk.Sunbirds, doves, squirrels, lizards and white-crestedlaughing thrushes are also part o the rich biodiversitythriving here. Incidentally, Kent Ridge Park has the highestnumber and species o dragonfies recorded compared toother parks.

    About Kent Ridge ParkKent Ridge Park is rich in historical value - oneo the last battles or Singapore was ought

    on this hill, which oversaw the harbor and theBritish military depots in the Ayer Rajah area.

    To commemorate the 50th Anniversary o theend o WWII, a plague is installed at Carpark

    B. Visitors can also view t wo decommissionedM114 Artillery Guns and an AMX-13 Light Tank

    which are displayed in the park.

    Refections o Bukit ChanduThe museum houses the history o the Opium

    Hill and the battalion o the Malay Regimentin the Pasir Panjang Area during WWII.

    Flora at Canopy WalkThe Canopy Walk cuts through dense

    secondary orest lled with groves oTembusu, Acacia and Dillenia. The Tembusu,

    easily recognized by its heavily ssured bark

    and low branching points, fowers in May andNovember. Other fora such as pitcher plants

    and wild orchids are ound along this trail.
