ABSTRACT

Breast milk is a useful natural resources that provide a health initial nutrition for

baby and build a close relationship and emotional between mother and baby. The

gold standard of baby food is begin by Early Breastfeeding Initiation (IMD and

followed by e!clusive breastfeeding during " months.

The ob#ective of this research is to study a correlation of the knowledge of mother

about breast milk and the success of IMD to the baby under $ year at %ediatric

%olyclinic of &'% )a#i *dam Malik Medan. This research is an analytic

descriptive study. The location of research is &'% )a#i *dam Malik Medan on

'eptember + ,ovember -$/. Its population is the mothers who come for

consultation at pediatric polyclinic and the number of sample is $ respondents.The sampling method is accidental sampling. The data collecting instrument is by

using $ 0uestions about knowledge on breast milk and $ 0uestion about the

success of IMD.

The results of research indicates that knowledge of mother is in medium criteria

(1"23 has good knowledge (-/2 and poor knowledge (-2.It is found that the

success of IMD is only (/42 where else (1$2 is found unsuccessful. There is a

correlation between knowledge of mother about breast milk and the success of

IMD on the baby less than $ year with p .$ 5 .1.

The conclusion of this research is the knowledge of mother is in medium criteria

and the IMD was found unsuccessful. Based on this research3 the clinician must

provide any information about breast milk and IMD actively when mothers come

for consultation so the mother will understand about breast milk and do IMD to

the neonate.
