NEW YORK - Romantic comedy “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is back with a sequel, looking for more laughs about family antics some 14 years after the original won over audiences.

The 2002 movie, which followed young Greek woman Toula (Nia Vardalos) as she tried to get her family to accept her non-Greek love interest Ian (John Corbett), proved a big hit, grossing around $368 mil-lion worldwide.

In the sequel, married life and parenthood are the focus of the story, with another big, fat Greek wedding in the works.

Since the success of the 2002 movie, Vardalos, who was nominated for an Oscar for her script, has been repeatedly asked about a sequel from fans as well as the pro-ducers, husband and wife team actor Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.

“I wouldn’t say we were bugging her, but it was sort of like, we would check in with her,” Wilson said at the premiere of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” in New York on Tuesday.

“Nia’s a very good friend so we see Nia (and her husband) quite a lot. But it was like, ‘Any thoughts about it? Anything coming up?’”

Vardalos told her Twitter followers in 2014 that she was working on the film’s sequel, saying she felt ready for the project after becoming a mother.

“I am feeling like it’s time to share it. We have been keeping it a secret for so long,” Vardalos said.

“You know, you work on a movie for a re-ally, really long time and we just had so much fun laughing as we made the movie and now I just want to hear the audience hear it.”

Obama made the remarks at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, where she released a single, along with singers Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monae and former “Glee” star Lea Michele, in

support of her worldwide girls’ education initiative.

“There are so many ways to impact the world. You don’t have to be president of the United States to do wonderful, marvelous

things,” Obama said at a panel discussion on empowering women at the festival, known as SXSW.

“I will not run for president,” Obama, 52, said when asked about her post-White House plans. Obama, who launched the Let Girls Learn initiative in March 2015, noted at the panel discussion that there are 62 million girls worldwide of school age who are not in school, many of whom are being denied an education and have seen their aspirations snuffed out by grown men.

“For me, 62 million girls not getting an education, that is personal,” she said.

The new single, “This is for My Girls,” was performed live at SXSW, a festival of music, film and tech in the Texas capital. Proceeds from the single, which also in-volves singer Kelly Rowland, rapper Missy Elliott and Disney Channel star Zendaya, will go toward the Let Girls Learn initia-tive.

Obama also had a brief musical interlude at the session, singing a line from the Mo-town song “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.”

Obama said the platform of first lady was so vast and powerful that she wanted to make sure she did not waste it. Once she leaves the White House, the first lady, who is a lawyer, said she will work in an unbiased way and work to keep reaching people.

“There is so much that I can do outside of the White House and sometimes there is much more that you can do outside of the White House without the constraints,” she said. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - A lawsuit over Justin Bieber’s 2012 run-in with a photographer in California while on a date with Selena Gomez has been settled out of court, the photogra-pher’s attorney said on Wednesday.

Jose Osmin Hernandez Duran had sued the Canadian pop star for assault and emotional distress, saying Bieber kicked and punched him outside a shopping center on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

A trial had been scheduled to start in Los Angeles on Wednesday but Duran’s attorney, Steven Madison, said the case had been re-solved but that the terms were confidential.

Duran said in his lawsuit that he was taking

photos of Bieber driving out of a car parking space when the singer got out, kicked him and delivered a punch before driving off.

Bieber, now 22, had a string of run-ins with photographers and the law between 2012-2014 as he evolved from a baby-faced heart-throb who found fame at age 13 to a young man. He and Gomez split in 2014 after a much publicized on-and-off relationship. (rtr)

Chief of Tanjung Benoa custom-ary village, I Made Wijaya, said that Benoa Bay is actually a marine tour-ism, not an integrated tourism area when it will have been reclaimed. On the other hand, the government has explained that South Bali has already been very densely populated. In other words, it is impossible to create new tourist destination bringing in thou-sands of job opportunities through reclamation.

“If the reason is indeed the death of mangrove trees, we can maintain. It poses a moral responsibility for customary village in respect of the Tri Hita Karana. If there is silting, it can be dredged,” he said. Chief of Pemogan customary village, A.A. Ketut Arya Ardana, said that his customary village is often said not to be affected by the reclamation. Actu-ally, it is very affected. Moreover, his village has group of fishermen whose livelihood very much depends on the Benoa Bay.

“Our fishermen groups would have a very bad impact due to the recla-mation. On that account, Pemogan customary village consisting of five hamlets rejects the reclamation,” he said. Chief of Buduk customary vil-lage, Ida Bagus Ketut Purbanegara, said if a customary village holds a meeting, decision of the meeting is

the highest constitution in the cus-tomary village. Whatever happens, the customary village will retain the decision because it contains a self-conception of the customary village itself. He reminded that all areas in Bali are under the control and ruler of customary villages.

“We’d just like to remind that we, from 26 customary villages, speak up based on customary meeting, the highest constitution which has self-concept. Do not create horizontal conflicts in Bali, please listen to and respect to our opinion. Customary vil-lages do not go up against the progress, but we want an advanced tourism but culturally friendly,” he said.

Chief of Ketewel customary vil-lage, I Wayan Loci, said that the rejec-tion against the reclamation is based on the decision of meeting of Ketewel customary village on February 23. He was worried that the hamlets located on the coastal areas will run out due to abrasion after the Benoa Bay reclama-tion. The abrasion due to reclamation of Serangan Island alone has elimi-nated a temple at the village.

“We the community, youth and everyone at the Ketewel customary village will make a declaration on March 27 to strongly reject the Benoa Bay reclamation. Nevertheless, we will do it peacefully through an art performance,” he said. Since the rec-lamation of Serangan Island is always used as an example, Sabha Desa of Serangan, I Wayan Loka, eventually

apologized. Actually, Serangan village itself is a ‘victim’ of the first reclama-tion in Bali. Therefore, the Serangan village also stated its rejection against the Benoa Bay reclamation.

Chief of Bugbug customary vil-lage, Karangasem, Wayan Mas Suy-asa, said that rejection of the chief of coastal customary villages when associated with the strength of Lord Varuna means that the lord has re-jected the reclamation. Seeing from the number of community rejecting, it means the Mother Earth has entered into the soul of Balinese human.

“When many people have rejected, this means there are sounds of nature. So, the leaders in central and regional authorities must pay attention this voice of nature by reviewing and revoking the Presidential Regula-

tion No. 51/2014,” he said. Suyasa has confidence that God will bestow His blessing to those speaking out in accordance with conscience and the sounds of nature. Therefore, the struggle is always accompanied with prayers to avoid physical struggle.

Chief of Kuta customary village, Wayan Swarsa, said that the meeting of customary village chiefs at the of-fice of LPD Sanur was attended by 14 chiefs and representatives of 26 customary villages that rejected the reclamation plan. The 26 customary villages rejecting the Benoa Bay reclamation plan then established a moral agreement in what the so-called Pasubayan.

“As part of the Island of Bali, we then affiliate known as the pasubayan, which means a moral agreement,

where there is an equal responsibility for the land of Bali,” he said.

Swarsa added that movement of the customary villages has been get-ting more massive in the past three months because they realize the importance of protecting the environ-ment in terms of Parhyangan (spiritual aspect), Pawongan (social aspect) and Palemahan (environmental aspect). Sea in particular belongs to the part of ritual at customary village. Moreover, the Benoa Bay is mentioned to have 70 sacred points that should be kept.

“When there is a party wishing to reclaim the sea and creating an artifi-cial island, we will respond whether it is requested or not because our faith to the sacred areas on the land of Bali has been disturbed,” he explained. (kmb32)

MEXICO CITY — About 200 fashion design students at Mexico City’s IberoAmerican University have opened a show of dozens of dresses and other clothes examin-ing the effects of the drug trade on Mexican culture.

Rhinestones, pistols, spattered blood, skulls and marijuana leaves are prominent among the designs, displayed on mannequins at the school’s campus.

Some of the dresses are demure — although there’s a party dress

with a pistol tucked in a sash. Another dress features the colors of the Mexican flag drenched in fake blood.

The show’s goal, in fashion student Sofia Redondo’s words, is “to explain the world of drug trafficking with fashion, and show how it is affecting Mexican culture.”

Some Mexicans have adopted fashions popular among drug traf-fickers, ranging from polo shirts to embroidered caps. (ap)

NEW YORK — Forget about slipping out of your shoes because of loose laces or feeling pressure from too-tight tying when doing those sprints.

Nike Inc. has unveiled its first power-lacing sneaker — it allows users to make the fit looser or snugger on the fly by pressing buttons on the side of the shoe.

The world’s largest sportswear brand, based in Beaverton, Oregon, unveiled the sneaker along with a host of other innovations Wednesday at a media event in New York.

The innovations come as Nike is digging deeper into personalized products and services, while fo-cusing on reaching a goal of posting $50 billion in annual revenue by the end of its fiscal 2020 year. It reported $30.6 billion in revenue for its latest fiscal year that ended in May.

Other innovations Nike highlighted include “anti-clog traction,” which uses technology that prevents mud from sticking to the soles of soccer cleats.

Nike also unveiled a new Nike Plus app, an all-access pass for athletes. The app, available in June, connects to its suite of apps that include running and training aids and provides access to Nike experts.

“We’ve entered a new era of personalized per-formance,” said Mark Parker, Nike’s president and CEO. “Today, athletes want more than just a dash board. They want a relationship.”

Nike says that the potential for shoes with adap-tive lacing is huge because it provides tailored-to-the-moment custom fit.

When users step into the shoe, their heel will hit a sensor. The athlete then can press two buttons on the side that adjust the grip. But Nike says that in the future, it won’t be manual. The sensor could sense when the user needs to have the shoe tighter or looser.

The self-lacing sneaker, which is called “Nike HyperAdapt 1.0,” will be out starting the holiday season and will only be available for members of its loyalty Nike+ app. It will be available in three colors. The price was not revealed.

“The adaptive lacing system is an excellent first step towards truly adaptive personalized footwear,” said Matt Powell, sports industry analyst at NPD Group Inc., a market research firm. (ap)

BANGLI — In order to an-ticipate traffic congestion during the upcoming Ngusaba Kedasa ceremony to be held at Ulundau Batur Temple in Kintamani, Ban-gli’s Police Traffic Affairs plan to divert traffic at some points and the main road in front of the temple will be completely closed to traffic. Vehicles will be directed to pre-determined alternate routes.

Chief of the Bangli Police Traffic Affairs, Ketut Mastra Budaya, with permission from the Chief of Bangli Police, Danang Benny K., said on Wednesday (Mar. 16) that the traffic

diversion aimed at reducing conges-tion during the Ngusaba Kedasa ritual at Ulundanu Batur Temple will start on March 22 and go on until April 4 when the ceremony comes to an end. Security and traffic routes are the saem as last year.

While the ritual is in progress, the one-way traffic system will be applied. All vehicles coming form the south to the three three-way intersection at Katung will not be allowed to continue northward but will instead turn left and park at Tunon. Vehicles going to Singaraja will be diverted via Katung and then

take the road to Mount Kunyit and continue through to the KUD (co-operative). Vehicles coming from the north will be directed from the Blancan intersection to turn right and then head south or east from the Peludu intersection.

“This year, we have come up with a breakthrough in terms of parking by preventing any cars form parking in from to f the temple. No-parking signs have been installed on one side of the road. Whereas in the past this sign was only ever temporarily installed for the dura-tion of the ceremony, it will now be

there permanently. Whether or not there is a temple ceremony going on or not it is now forbidden to park on the west side of the road. Parking is only allowed on the east side so as to prevent crowdedness on this section of road” he explained.

Budaya added that the new map indicates that some parking spaces have been provided in front of Batur Temple, at Tunon and Kintamani market. While the Ngusaba ritual is in progress truck carrying quar-rying materials will not be allowed to pass.

In order for the traffic diversion

to take place smoothly, approxi-mately 200 police personnel will be employed for security during the ritual. Bangli Police will also set up 15 monitoring -posts to al-low road users to be comfortable. “We will also put up a large map of the traffic diversion at four major points in Bangli, Susut, Singaraja, and in the Tunon park-ing space, so that people will not be confused” he said, adding that motorists are being asked to follow the determined paths, and follow instructions so as to reduce traffic congestion. ORLANDO - Theme park operator SeaWorld Entertainment Inc said on Thursday it would stop breeding killer whales, and those currently at its parks would be the last.

Orlando-based SeaWorld has faced sagging attendance and years of criticism over its treatment of the captive marine mammals as well as pressure from animal rights activists to end public exhibition of killer whales altogether.

SeaWorld, which operates parks in San Diego, Orlando and San An-tonio, said in November it would replace its signature “Shamu” killer whale shows in San Diego with displays focused on conser-vation.

California regulators had said earlier that they would bar Sea-World San Diego from continuing to breed killer whales, or orcas, if it went ahead with a planned expan-sion of their artificial habitat.

SeaWorld has 29 killer whales under its care, including six on loan to third parties, accord-ing to its website. (http://bit.ly/1pvSG0o)

The first killer whale was born in a SeaWorld park in 1985. Since then, 30 have been born in the parks, including the first-ever births through artificial insemina-tion.

The company also faced a backlash after the release of the 2013 documentary “Blackfish,” which depicted the captivity and public exhibition of killer whales as inherently cruel.

The film, which SeaWorld has criticized as inaccurate and mis-leading, also explored the circum-stances leading to the 2010 death of a top SeaWorld trainer, who was pulled underwater and drowned by an orca she had performed with in Florida.

The company has sought to counter negative publicity sur-rounding “Blackfish” with a public relations blitz aimed at drawing attention to SeaWorld’s role in marine mammal research and its rescue and rehabilitation of animals in the wild. SeaWorld’s shares, which have fallen about 11 percent in the past year, closed at $17.12 on Wednesday. (rtr)

There is huge international in-terest in Nefertiti, who died in the 14th century B.C. and is thought to be Tutankhamun’s stepmother, and confirmation of her final resting place would be the most remark-able Egyptian archaeological find this century.

An analysis of radar scans done on the site last November has re-vealed the presence of two empty spaces behind two walls in King Tut’s chamber, Damaty told a news conference.

“(The scans point to) different things behind the walls, different material that could be metal, could be organic,” he said.

Damaty said in November there was a 90 percent chance that “some-thing” was behind the walls of King Tut’s chamber following an initial radar scan that had been sent to Japan for analysis.

A more advanced scan will be conducted at the end of this month with an international research team to confirm whether the empty spaces are in fact chambers. Only

then, Damaty said, can he discuss the possibility of how and when a team could enter the rooms.

“We can say more than 90 per-cent that the chambers are there. But I never start the next step until I’m 100 percent.”

The find could be a boon for Egypt’s ailing tourism industry, which has suffered endless setbacks since an uprising that toppled au-tocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011 but remains a vital source of foreign currency.

British Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves, who is leading the inves-tigation, believes that Tutankha-mun’s mausoleum was originally occupied by Nefertiti and that she lies undisturbed behind what he believes is a partition wall.

The discovery of Nefertiti, whose chiselled cheek-bones and regal beauty were immortalised in a 3,300-year old bust now on display in a Berlin museum, would shed fresh light on what remains a mysterious period of Egyptian history. (rtr)

Egypt finds new clues that Queen Nefertiti may lie buried behind Tut’s tomb

CAIRO - Egypt has unearthed further evidence that a secret chamber, believed by some to be the lost burial site of Queen Nefertiti, may lie behind King Tutankhamun’s tomb, Egypt’s antiquities minister said on Thursday.

NEGARA — The Parking area in front of the Negara puclic market on Jalan Ngurah Rai is becoming increasingly crowded and chaotic and many businesses, including banks in this commercial area do not have any parking. As a result, vehicles end up parked by the side of the road and during rush hour vehicles end up double and triple parked as witnessed in the last few weeks.

IN front of the market two lines have been set aside for motorcycle parking, but sometimes a third line

is formed. The same is true in front of stores and banks on this stretch of road. “Many vehicles pile up and cars are parked to the middle of the road” said 45 year old resident of Pendem, Ketut Sudiarta.

Some banks, like BCA’s Neg-ara branch office do not have a spacious-enough parking area to accommodate all their customers who will sometimes end up parked in front of nearby stores.

When Jalan Sudirman is closed for particular events, Java-Bali Road becomes seriously jammed

because of the chaotic parking in front of the market. Last Pengeru-pukan (day before Nyepi), the road was completely jammed as road users increased and more people were shopping in the market. Un-fortunately, the parking attendants on duty at the time felt unable to do anything but let people park, despite the large numbers of people. Not long ago, the Transportation Agency prohibited parking beyond the alloted space, but if there are no officers present, people go ahead and park there anyway. (kmb26)

The Parking area in front of the Negara puclic market on Jalan Ngurah Rai is becoming increasingly crowded and chaotic.

“First it must be understood that according to a regional by-law on spatial planning, Batu Ampar has been designated as a ‘strategic tour-ism area’ that includes Pejarakan, Banyupoh, Sumberkima and Pe-muteran village. So far, the most widely known is area Pemuteran because they have managed to pre-

serve and maintain the biota and reef” said Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, on Wednesday (Mar. 16).

Tourism in Pumuteran Village is also supported by facilities such as hotels, villas, restaurants as well as tourist information centers.

In October 2015, the local govern-

ment organized the Buleleng Bali Dive Festival (BBDF), which helped to promote Pumuteran as a tourist destination. The Dive Festival was attended by the Ministry of Tourism’s Deputy of Development and Market-ing; Prof. I Gede Pitana, along with the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana and other officials. “The Government of Buleleng has done a lot but the people of Pemuteran have done even more. Pumeteran –as part of Batu Ampar, has great potential as a tourist destination and is already the second most popular site in Buleleng after Lovina” said Suyasa, former

Head of the Buleleng Development Planning Board (Bappeda).

He explained that most of the peo-ple who visit Pumuteran are nature and spirituality lovers who get great enjoyment from the calm atmosphere here away from the ‘rah-rah’ of South Bali. Given the good situation and promising prospects, Suyasa said that he has confidence that investors will be scrambling to devellope the area. In order to ensure that the beauty of Pemuteran is well maintained Suyasa added that he will be coordinating with be holding a joint coordination meeting with local community lead-

ers, about how to increase tourism in a beneficial way.

“We have analysed the strategic plan for the area of Pemuteran. It is aimed at nature conservation and maintaining the beauty of the village. So far, most of the foreign tourist who visit here are form Europe – especially France, Ger-many and the Netherlands. Based on market analysis, there is a lot of opportunity to develop tourism related businesses here as visitors stay here an average of 7 days while they only stay 3-4 days in Lovina” he said. (kmb34)

Sea-life Conservations at Pemuteran draws tourists

SINGARAJA — West Buleleng’s underwater areas have been drawing the interest of investors because of the potential that its natural beauty has to be developed as a tourist destination. The Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency is well aware of the strategic area of Batu Ampar in the sub-district of Gerorak’s superitority in terms of its coastline and natural coral reefs.

BUSINESS

As a result, Fed officials expect to raise rates more gradually this year than they had envisioned in December. The officials now fore-see two, rather than four, modest increases in their benchmark short-term rate during 2016.

The Fed said Wednesday that the economy has continued to grow moderately but that the global economy and financial markets still pose risks. Offsetting the threats, the Fed said in a statement after a policy meeting that it foresees further strengthening in the job market.

At a news conference, Chair Janet Yellen said the Fed expects inflation, which has stayed per-sistently low, to reach the central bank’s 2 percent target in two to three years.

Investors seemed pleased by the Fed’s expectation of a more gradual pace of rate increases. The Dow Jones industrial average, which had been up slightly before the Fed’s statement was issued, closed up

74 points. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.91 percent from 1.97 percent.

Asked at her news conference whether she thought the Fed could receive enough new economic in-formation to raise rates at its next meeting in the last week of April, Yellen stressed, as in the past, that “every meeting is a live meeting. April remains a live meeting.”

But economists said that based on the concerns the Fed expressed about the global economy, they doubted that officials would be ready to raise rates in April.

“There isn’t enough time for them to see enough convincing data and do sufficient jawboning to prep markets for a rate hike,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com.

Since raising its key rate from a record low near zero in December, the Fed has held off on raising rates again in the face of market jitters and a sharp slowdown in China. Resuming its rate hikes too soon

could slow growth or rattle inves-tors again.

In her news conference, Yel-len suggested that sluggish wage growth showed that many more Americans may be available and willing to work even though the unemployment rate has reached an eight-year low of 4.9 percent. If em-ployers perceive many candidates for job openings, they don’t need to offer much higher pay to attract job seekers.

“I’m somewhat surprised we’re not seeing more of a pickup in wage growth,” Yellen acknowledged.

The Fed is also waiting for con-sumer spending to pick up, which could happen if Americans spend more of their savings from lower gas prices. This week, the govern-ment said that retail sales slipped in February and that Americans spent less in January than it had previous-ly estimated. The report suggested that consumers remained cautious about spending despite a solid job market and lower gas prices.

The Fed’s decision Wednesday was approved 9-1, with Esther George, president of the Fed’s Kan-sas City regional bank, dissenting.

The statement said George favored a quarter-point rate hike now. The Fed’s updated forecasts, pointing to expectations of two rate hikes this year, are based on responses from all 17 officials who take part in the discussions, not just the 10 who vote at each meeting.

In a nod to the financial market turbulence that hit in the beginning of the year over concerns about falling oil prices and weakness in China, the Fed statement said, “Global economic and financial developments continue to pose risks.”(ap)

TOKYO — Japan posted its biggest trade surplus in over four years in February, thanks to a strengthening in the yen and weak oil prices, though both imports and exports fell, suggesting persisting slack demand both in Japan and overseas.

Preliminary data reported Thursday showed exports fell 4 percent from a year earlier to 5.7 trillion yen ($50.5 billion) in February and imports dropped 14 percent to 5.46 trillion yen ($48.4 billion).

The resulting 242.8 billion yen ($2.2 billion) surplus compares with a deficit of 426 billion yen a year earlier and a deficit of 648.8 billion yen in January. It was the biggest surplus since September 2011.

Surging oil and gas imports following the closures of Japan’s nuclear plants after the March 2011 disaster in Fukushima have pushed Japan from perennial

surpluses into deficits. A weaker yen accentuated those costs, but the prolonged slump in crude oil prices has alleviated some of the high cost of energy imports.

Japan’s imports from the Middle East, the source of most of its oil and gas, fell 35 percent in February from a year earlier. Exports to the United States, its biggest export market, edged up 0.2 percent while imports from the U.S. climbed 5 percent, leaving a trade surplus of 604.1 billion yen ($5.4 billion).

Japan’s exports to China rose 5 percent, while its imports from China plunged nearly 21 percent. Japan’s deficit with China fell by 50 percent, to 382.4 billion yen ($3.4 billion).

The weakness in overseas de-mand was spread across industries, as exports of machinery, electron-ics and chemicals fell, while ve-hicle exports, which account for a quarter of the total, rose only 0.9 percent.(ap)

Fed now foresees fewer interest rate increases during 2016

AMLAPURA - Realization of the hotel and restaurant tax in the first quarter (January to March) of 2016 is not satisfactory. Provisional data indicate that in the first quarter it only reached IDR 1.6 billion. However, the target to be met in the first quarter must be IDR 3.6 billion. This low achieve-ment of hotel and restaurant tax happened due to sluggish tourist arrivals since early this year.

This situation was recognized by the Head of the Karangasem Revenue Service (Dispenda), Nengah Toya, when met at his office, Tuesday (Mar. 15). Seeing the current condition, he was not sure that the realization of hotel and restaurant tax target can be met in the first quarter. When the first quarter cannot be met until the end of March, the Revenue Service will also be difficult to meet the hotel and restaurant tax target this year reaching IDR 18.4 bil-lion. Moreover, it solely relies on the same number of tourist accommodation each year. Of the 404 tourist accommodations, they comprise one five-star, two four-star, three three-star and one two-star hotel. The remaining accommodation belongs to budget hotels categorized into three jasmine (24 hotels), jasmine two (19 hotels) and jasmine one to villas totally amounting to 354 units.

This year the target of hotel and restaurant tax amounts to IDR16.7 billion. Last year it could ex-ceed the target of IDR 17.3 billion. “If the tourist

visit is sluggish, the occupancy rate will also drop. As a result, the realization of hotel and restaurant tax is low as well,” he said. All this time, the hotel and restaurant tax always becomes a leading source of the Revenue Service to meet the regionally generated revenue each year. When the target of hotel and restaurant tax cannot be met, it will be increasingly difficult to meet the target of revenue this year.

This year, the regionally generated revenue of Karangasem is targeted at IDR 233 billion, increasing from the previous year’s target of IDR 232 billion. Although the actual last year’s rev-enue reached IDR 242 billion, this year’s does not rise too high, considering the number of potential sources of the regionally generated revenue has begun to decline. Quarrying activities, for instance, are now only focused on Kubu subdistrict, while they were previously prevalent in Rendang, Selat and Bebandem subdistrict.

Nevertheless, he still had confidence that there will be an increase in the second, third and fourth quarter. He hoped the relevant agencies can boost the number of tourist visits with various kinds of packages, so that visitors are getting more interested in coming to Karangasem. He asserted the nature of Revenue Service is only to receive income, not directly involves in generating efforts. (kmb31)

Deputy Regent of Klungkung, I Made Kasta, stated that the stranded whale in the area of Batu Tumpeng has accidentally become a promo-tion for the location. Batu Tumpeng Beach poses the migration path of whale and dolphin as directly overlooking the Indian Ocean. Moreover, the beach is also famous for its very fine surfing location. “Every day there are always foreign and local visitors coming to surf in this place,” he said while inspecting the Batu Tumpeng Beach after the burial of the whale carcass, Tuesday (Mar. 15).

As observation of Bali Post at Batu Tumpeng, there have been many people coming from the morning. Most of them were very curious to see firsthand the whale. However, many visitors were disap-pointed because when arriving at the location they just saw a pile of sand where the whale was buried. A resident from Sidemen (Karan-gasem), Ketut Sugiarta, revealed that he could just come with family on Tuesday.

Unfortunately after arriving at

the location, the whale carcass was already buried. Similar disappoint-ment was also expressed by a resi-dent from Jalan Akasia, Denpasar named Agung Kusuma Wardana. He visited Batu Tumpeng Beach and merely wanted to see firsthand the stranded whale. “I have never seen a stranded whale in person, but looking at the pictures is often,” he said while claiming to know the stranded whale from social media.

Crowded visitors caused patrol officers of the Klungkung Police to assign four personnel at the location. In addition, the non-commissioned police officers at Gelgel village, Ketut Winata, also monitored the coastal situation. “We do monitoring due to crowded visitors and it is meant to make anticipation,” he said.

Cemetery of the whale on the beach is constantly eroded by pounding waves. Unavoidably this condition made the Conservation and Natural Resources Agency (KSDA) Klungkung officers wor-ried if the whale cemetery gets eroded by waves.

Chief of the KSDA Klungkung, Gusti Putu Warna, said that the whale carcass was already buried with the depth of six meters. “Hope-fully, nature will be still friendly so that the waves will not erode it,”

he hoped. He admitted not to know why

the sperm whale (Physeter macro-cephalus) is stranded because he has not had time to take a sample of the largest animal belonging to

toothed whale denoting the larg-est toothed animal in the world. “Yesterday, heavy equipment was used to evacuate so that we did not have time to take a sample,” he said. (dwa)

Batu Tumpeng Beach becomes a new tourist attraction

SEMARAPURA - After the stranding of whale with a length of 16.2 meters on Monday (Mar. 14) on Batu Tumpeng Beach, Gelgel village, the location began to be widely known by the public. After the whale carcass was buried on the beach on Tuesday (Mar. 15) at 02:00, a few people came to the beach. Other than due to the stranded whale, the Batu Tumpeng Beach actually has been widely known as a surfing site offering big enough waves.

Gusti Nyoman Raka explained that this ritual is also associated with the presence of Duur Bingin Temple being different from the others be-cause the venerated deity abiding at this temple is no other than Ida Bethara Ratu Gede in the form of a couple of Barong Landung (male

and female). “So, this ritual has the meaning like a thanksgiving. After the children deliver to the offerings in the form of fruits, flowers and others in the morning they will carry out this ritual,” he said.

Ngerebeg ritual is started from the front of the Duur Bingin Temple and then children with a penjor miniature made from the stem of snakefruit trees have to walk along 10 km to surround the village of Tegallalang.

Well, amid such an atmosphere, unexpectedly emerged two children decorated themselves with the words saying ‘Reject Benoa Bay Reclamation.’ The first unidenti-fied child put the words on the back saying ‘Reject Reclamation,’ while the second one also adorned himself by the same concept of wording but rather faulty saying “Revoke Presidential Regulation No.51/2015.” (kmb35)

Separately, Germany closed its embassy in Ankara and its gen-eral consulate in Istanbul due to indications that an attack could be imminent. The German school in Istanbul was also shut due to an “unconfirmed warning”, the Ger-man Foreign Ministry said.

TAK had previously claimed responsibility for a car bombing in Ankara last month that killed 29 people. Ankara has now been hit by three bombings in a space of five months, ratcheting up security fears across the city and Turkey.

In a statement posted online,

the group described the latest car bombing on Sunday, at a crowded public transport hub, as revenge for security operations in the mainly Kurdish southeast that have been under way since July, in which hun-dreds of civilians, security forces and militants have been killed.

TAK said it had not intended to kill civilians and was target-ing security forces. It said a large number of civilians had been killed after police intervened, without explaining exactly how, and warned that further civilian deaths were “inevitable”.

TAK says it split off from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), although experts who follow Kurdish militants say the groups retain ties. At least 40,000 people have been killed since the PKK began its fight for Kurdish autonomy in the southeast three decades ago.

The increased violence in Tur-key has also put strain on the NATO member’s relationship with the United States, which is supporting a Syrian Kurdish militia, the YPG, in the fight against Islamic State in Syria.

Turkey says the Syrian Kurdish fighters have links to the PKK. Washington considers the PKK a terrorist group, but not the YPG. (rtr)

“Certainly, it will involve vari-ous stakeholders, including the government and non-government agencies. The strategy will have a framework built around preventing radical ideology from spreading in Indonesia,” he said after a cer-emony held to welcome the new BNPT chief and bid farewell to the former chief at the BNPT office in Sentul, Bogor, West Java.

Tito said he would first study the programs formulated by the BNPT in the past one year to see if these are adequate and in line with the concept he plans to implement. He said he would also focus on rehabilitation and de-radicalization, targeting convicted terrorists now serving their prison terms, as well as those who have been released.

He said a special task force would be needed to carry out the two tasks. “The special task force will carry out enforcement but will also counsel them to ensure that the concept of radicalism does not grow further,” he said.

With regard to law enforcement, he said the BNPT would strengthen its capability of preempting any terror act in coordination with intel-ligence agencies and task forces, including IT sleuthing, intelligence

information and analysis of soft-ware based information.

The BNPT will also improve its scientific investigation and law enforcement capability, he said.

“It is imperative that the BNPT improves its synergy with other stakeholders, including the police and the military, so that broad based preventive steps can be taken with a better degree of preciseness,” he said.

Tito also emphasized the impor-tance of strengthening international cooperation because terrorism has become a global problem, espe-cially with the rise of Al Qaeda and ISIS.

The former chief of BNPT, Com-missioner General Saud Usman Nasution, who passed on the baton to Tito, expressed his belief that the new chief would make the BNPT perform better in the future in view of his experience in fighting terror-ism. “It is as if he (Tito) is returning home at the BNPT because he was one of the “midwives” involved in the birth of the agency,” he said.

Saud admitted that the task of the new BNPT chief would be onerous. Besides focusing on prevention pro-grams, he would have to deal with some of the issues that remained

unresolved during his term of of-fice, including the matter of office and operational funds that are still considered inadequate.

“He already knows the problems he will be facing, and I hope he overcomes these so that the BNPT can focus on its task to prevent ter-rorism,” he said.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) inaugurated M. Tito Karnavian as the chief of the BNPT at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday. Karnavian was earlier the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command chief.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPR) Chairman Zulkifli Hasan, State Intelligence Agency Chief Sutiyoso, Attorney General Mu-hammad Prasetyo, National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti, and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, among others, were present at the inauguration ceremony. On assuming the new office, Karnavian will rise to the rank of three-star general.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla said Inspector General Tito Karnavian is the right person to lead the BNPT as he has the relevant experience in combating terrorism.

“Karnavian is the right person with experience in working with the Anti-terror Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88),” Kalla noted. (ant)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has reiterated the governments commitment to continue to address the question of poverty and economic disparities in the country.

“The (government will continue to address the issue of) disparities among residents and the disparities among regions,” the president said while chairing a limited meeting to discuss the poverty rate and the economic dis-parity reduction program at the Presi-dential Office here on Wednesday.

He said all policies and programs related to poverty alleviation and economic disparity eradication efforts must be implemented in an integrated fashion by involving ministries, Bank Indonesia, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the National Logistics Agency

(Bulog). The current poverty rate is the result of economic slowdown and instability in prices, he noted.

“The two factors, economic slowdown and rising food prices, particularly the price of rice, should become the center of our attention,” he said.

The president said unstable food prices can easily erode all the positive impact of the governments programs, particularly with regard to poverty eradication.

He further said village fund program must benefit the people through labor-intensive projects which will eventually improve the purchasing power of villagers.

He was also proud of the prog-ress achieved in disbursing small-holder business credits which offer low interest. (ant)

JAKARTA - Indonesian secu-rity forces have killed two ethnic Uighur Chinese belonging to a militant network led by the coun-try’s most wanted man, police said on Wednesday.

Indonesia has launched an ag-gressive, military-backed, security campaign in the jungles of Sulawesi island as it battles the threat from growing domestic support for the Islamic State militant group.

Police said the men, part of Chi-na’s Uighur Muslim minority, had joined Santoso, a militant in Poso in central Sulawesi, who is Indonesia’s most high-profile backer of Islamic State, and has been on the run for more than three years.

Tuesday’s shootout followed a challenge by security forces to a group of unknown men to identify themselves, during an operation to comb through a forested area of Poso, which is more than 1,600 km (994 miles) northeast of Jakarta, the capital.

“Based on testimony from an-other suspect we had arrested, those two were identified as Ui-ghurs,” said Central Sulawesi police spokesman Hari Suprapto, adding that authorities had notified the Chi-nese embassy in Jakarta. A Chinese

embassy press official declined a Reuters request for comment.

Four other Uighur men were jailed last year for attempting to join the same militant network, whose leader authorities say they have cor-nered, after a hunt that lasted more than a year and involved hundreds of troops.

“We have been successful in surrounding them. Their supplies have started to dwindle,” the chief security minister, Luhut Pandjaitan, told reporters last week. “We hope Santoso will surrender, but we are prepared for the worst-case scenario.” Asked for an expected timeframe, he gave no details.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Uighurs keen to escape unrest in their far western Chinese home-land of Xinjiang have travelled clandestinely via Southeast Asia to Turkey.

China says they often end up crossing into Syria and Iraq to fight for Islamic State militants.

Hundreds of people have been killed over the past few years in resource-rich Xinjiang, strategically located on the borders of central Asia, in violence between Uighurs and ethnic majority Han Chinese. (rtr)

BRASILIA - Protests erupted in several Brazilian cities on Wednes-day after President Dilma Rousseff named her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva chief of staff and a taped conversation fed opposition claims the move was meant to shield Lula from prosecution.

In the capital Brasilia, riot police fired pepper spray at more than 5,000 demonstrators who filled the streets outside the presidential palace and Congress building. They waved banners calling for the left-ist leader’s resignation and Lula’s arrest.

Thousands more demonstrators packed the main Avenue Paulista in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s financial hub, which was the center of na-tional protests on Sunday that drew more than 1 million people onto the streets in a call for Rousseff’s departure.

With Brazil’s economy mired in its worst recession in a genera-tion, popular anger at Rousseff is mounting as an investigation into bribes and political kickbacks at state oil company Petrobras taints her inner circle.

“I am here for the future of my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren,” said Vera Carneiro, 75, draped in a yellow-and-green Brazilian flag outside the presi-dency. “Dilma has to go. She and Lula both. Enough is enough.”

Rousseff’s appointment of Lula, who was charged last week with money laundering and fraud as part of the probe, was slammed by opposition parties as a desperate attempt to rally support in Congress against impeachment proceedings

due to start on Thursday.Lula, a 70-year-old former union

leader whose 2003-2010 govern-ment helped lift some 40 million Brazilians out of poverty, remains one of Brazil’s most influential politicians.

However, the corruption inves-tigation has weakened his sway in Congress and there are growing signs that Rousseff’s main coalition partner is preparing to abandon the government.

“Brazil cannot continue with them anymore,” said Rubens Bue-no, one of dozens of opposition lawmakers who interrupted a ses-sion with chants for Rousseff to re-sign. “They are using their positions to stay in power at all cost.”

The hurried publication of Lula’s appointment as Rousseff’s chief of staff in a special edition of the government’s Official Gazette on Wednesday gave him immunity from all but the Supreme Court, delaying any attempts to prosecute him.

The federal judge overseeing the graft probe said in a court filing released on Wednesday that taped telephone conversations showed Lula and Rousseff considered trying to influence prosecutors and courts in favor of the former president.

He admitted, however, there was no evidence they actually car-ried this out. One recording, made public by the court, showed Rous-seff offering to send Lula a copy of his appointment “in case it was necessary” - a possible reference to it providing him with immunity. (rtr)

CALIFORNIA - Novak Djokovic avenged his only loss of 2016 with a ruthless 6-3 6-3 victory over Feliciano Lopez as the Serbian top seed eased into the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday.

An eye issue forced Djokovic to retire against his Spanish opponent at the Dubai Duty Free Champion-ships last month but he had his sights set firmly on victory for their rematch in California.

The world number one needed just 66 minutes to prevail as he won 75 percent of his points on serve and

broke Lopez three times.“I have respect for his game,

which definitely made me very cau-tious of approaching this match and made me very determined to impose my game plan from the very begin-ning,” Djokovic told reporters.

“I was very solid. I didn’t allow him to come to the net too many times. It was a good performance.”

Djokovic enjoyed his best perfor-mance of the tournament to date and next meets Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who defeated Dominic Thiem 6-3 6-2, as the defending

champion seeks an unprecedented fifth title at Indian Wells.

Earlier in the day, third seed Stan Wawrinka was sent packing in the fourth round and the Swiss was very nearly joined by Rafa Nadal, who pulled off a Houdini-like escape to reach the last eight.

Fourth seed Nadal, three times a champion at Indian Wells, ral-lied from 5-2 down in the final set, saving a match point on the way, before battling past 18-year-old German prospect Alexandr Zverev 6-7(8) 6-0 7-5.

Ferrari showed impressive pace during pre-season testing and are considered the team most likely to dethrone Mercedes, who have domi-nated the last two seasons.

Asked whether the Italian glamour team were strong enough to chal-lenge for the title, German Vettel was forthright.

“I think we have,” he told the pre-race media conference at Albert Park ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

“The question is whether we are ready in time. But we are making progress.

“And we have made a step over the winter. But our target is to turn things around. Mercedes are still the favourites but we are trying to become the favourites.”

Vettel said Ferrari’s new SF16-H was a “big improvement” and a “big step forward overall” on last year’s car.

“We’ve done a very, very nice job... and it allows us to be first of all quicker from the start and also have more chance of improving through-out the year,” he added.

“So that’s good news. Whether it’s good news right from the start,

I don’t know. But we know that our challenge is very, very big.

“We know the bar is high but we are pushing, pushing very hard.”

Ferrari have not won a driver’s title since Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen was victorious in 2007. They were last constructors’ champions in 2008.

They were, however, the only team apart from Mercedes to put a driver on the top step of the po-dium last year, with Vettel snaring the three victories not taken by reigning champion Lewis Hamilton (10 wins) and his team mate Nico Rosberg (six).

Vettel’s comments echoed team principal Maurizio Arrivabene’s declaration last month that the team’s goal was to fight for the title right to the end of the season. (rtr)

ST MORITZ - Peter Fill became the first Italian to win the men’s downhill World Cup title on Wednesday, thanks to a 10th place in the St Moritz finals, while Switzerland’s Lara Gut made sure of the women’s overall crystal globe.

Five men had remained in the reckoning for the downhill crown with Fill -- who has had only two podium finishes this season -- tied at the top with injured Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal ahead of the final race.

Tenth place was all Fill needed, the Italian ending up with 462 points to Svindal’s 436 in a race won by Switzerland’s Beat Feuz. American Steven Nyman finished second and Canadian Erik Guay was third.

“I think we are a strong team. Now is the first time that we have the downhill globe and maybe now we continue in this way,” said Fill, who won the race in Kitzbuehel in January where Svindal tore a cruciate ligament.

The race start had been delayed by 30 minutes due to fresh snow on the piste and visibility was poor by the time Fill left the start.

“I was completely concentrated on my race,” he said. “The coach said to me the conditions are perfect, good visibility. And when I put my sticks out of the start gate I saw ‘Oh, what’s happening here? It’s not really good light.

“It was hard to go down but it was enough.”In the women’s race, Austrian Mirjam Puchner took her first career

World Cup victory ahead of Switzerland’s Fabienne Suter and Italian Elena Curtoni.

American Lindsey Vonn had already won the women’s downhill World Cup title before being sidelined by a knee injury that ended her overall World Cup hopes.

“I felt like I had a really great year - nine wins - and to be able to still take home one Globe at least, even though I had to end my season early, it means a lot,” said Vonn, who watched the race before being handed her eighth career downhill globe.

Vonn still leads the Super-G standings by 19 points but Gut can deny her that globe on Thursday when the women race the final speed event of the season.

“I worked so hard and was so close -- I was leading four titles when I got hurt -- so to still have at least one (Globe), that was huge and I’m pretty excited about it.”

Gut finished 13th in Wednesday’s downhill and is now assured of the overall title with three races and 300 points remaining to be won.

The Swiss has 1,382 points to Vonn’s 1,235 with Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg on 1,007. (rtr)

UBUD - Campuhan Ridge Walk is a free and easy nature trek, popular among repeat visitors to the central highland town of Ubud. The area provides a great retreat from the more hectic southern parts of the island, but this trail presents an even more pristine outback to escape from the contemporary boutique, guesthouse and restaurant-lined Jalan Raya Ubud. While the hike lets you enjoy cool fresh air and probably the most gorgeous hillside vista in the region, it also allows you to shed off some calories too with its nine-kilometre hill track.

Getting to the starting point is relatively easy. Those staying at the Warwick Ibah Luxury Villas and Spa have the best starting point to the Campuhan Ridge Walk, as the main access is a concrete path just down from this boutique hotel’s main entrance. Smaller letterings under the signage of the Warwick Ibah, bears “Going to The Hill” with an arrow pointing left, and as soon as you take on this path, the verdant surround-ings of the Campuhan Valley immediately come to sight, lined by dense tropical foliage. Thiago Alcantara scored in the 108th minute to put Bayern ahead for good in the second leg match of the last 16 and Kingsley Coman, on loan from Juventus, added the hosts’ fourth goal just two minutes later to seal a 6-4 victory on aggregate.

Bayern trailed 2-0 at halftime after goals from Paul Pogba and Juan Cuadrado put Juventus firmly in charge. The home side looked to be on the way out un-til Robert Lewandowski scored in the 73rd and Mueller’s late header changed everything.

“To score four goals against an Italian side, wow, compliments to my team,” Bayern coach Pep Guardiola said.

The match, at least in regula-tion time, was nearly a replica of the first leg in Turin, where Bay-ern dominated and led 2-0 before Juventus struck back with two late goals to salvage a draw.

Juventus, last season’s runner-up, produced a clever tactical display, defending smartly and relying on dangerous counterat-tacks. And it was seconds away from success. “It’s disappoint-ing, because we were so close,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. Guardiola’s team, a five-time winner, is in its fifth straight quarterfinal.

“After our first goal, we saw that Juventus was not counterat-tacking any more. It’s that Ger-man mentality to try until the end,” Guardiola said.

In the other match Wednesday, Barcelona’s big three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar all scored to beat Arsenal 3-1, sending the defending champi-ons into the Champions League quarterfinals for a ninth consecu-tive season with a 5-1 victory on aggregate.

With Bayern besieging the Italians’ goal, Douglas Costa sent a cross from the right corner and Lewandowski headed home at the far post from close range to put Bayern back into the match.

Bayern’s perseverance paid off in the first minute of added time. Patrice Evra lost the ball

near the penalty area and Coman crossed to the far post for Muel-ler to head home and send the

71,000 at the Allianz arena into frenzied celebrations.

Alcantara, a substitute in extra time for Franck Ribery, swapped passes and beat Neuer, before Coman, also a substitute, made sure of victory by curling a shot past Gianluigi Buffon.

Juventus may have taken

Bayern by surprise with its press-ing deep inside Bayern’s half from the opening whistle and the Italian side got its dividend early when Pogba scored his first Champions League goal since November 2014.

Sami Khedira sent a long ball down the right and David

Alaba missed his clearance at-tempt. With Manuel Neuer also mistiming his exit from the goal, Stephan Liechtensteiner was able to square the ball to Pogba, who slotted home from the edge of the penalty area into the empty net.

Juventus pulled back a little after the goal, but always looked dangerous and doubled the lead in the 28th after a great run by Morata. The forward picked up the ball in his half and slalomed past four defenders before pass-ing to Cuadrado, who fired inside the near post over Neuer.

Buffon parried an effort from Mueller in the 42nd and the attempted clearance by the Ju-ventus defense bounced off Le-wandowski and flew just wide. Immediately after, Neuer did well to save a close-range shot by Cuadrado.

Juventus had former Bayern forward Mario Mandzukic on the bench, while Bayern was without winger Arjen Robben because of a groin problem.

The Italians were already without midf ie lder Claudio Marchisio, defender Giorgio Chiellini and striker Paulo Dy-bala, all injured.

Morata had two chances early in the second half after coun-terattacks but finished poorly. Mandzukic came in for Morata in the 71st but Juventus missed Morata’s speed.

Friday’s draw will feature Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Benfica, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Wolfsburg. Teams from the same country can be drawn together.(ap)

BARCELONA - Barcelona’s dynamic attacking trio of Neymar, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi were too strong for Arsenal as all three scored in a 3-1 victory on Wednesday that sent the Spanish side into the Champions League quarter-finals 5-1 on aggregate.

Brazil’s Neymar opened the scor-ing in the first half as the home side dominated the early play, but Arse-nal’s Mohamed Elneny curled in an excellent finish to spark life into the visitors after the break.

Suarez, however, launched him-self into the air to meet a Dani Alves cross and send a superb volley into the top corner to deflate the English side, who have now been knocked out of the tournament in the last 16 for six successive seasons.

The mercurial Messi rounded off the scoring with a trademark chipped finish two minutes from time as the defending champions extended their record-breaking unbeaten run to 38 matches in all competitions.

“We know we need to attack and

defend at the same level if we want to win,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique told reporters.

The La Liga leaders remained on course for a second successive treble and their coach is not concerned about who they face in the last eight of Europe’s most prestigious club competition.

“The only team I want to keep away from us is Barca and I think we have no chances to meet them,” he joked.

The defeat will increase the pres-sure on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, whose side are 11 points adrift of leaders Leicester City in the Premier League and exited the FA Cup last weekend. “We had our chances, but we couldn’t take them,” Wenger said.

“But we have to say well done to Barcelona. They have two or three players who transfer normal life into art.”

Barcelona served notice of their intent when Arsenal keeper David Ospina was forced into a superb save

to deny Messi, but the reprieve was short-lived as the hosts took the lead through Neymar’s side-footed finish after 18 minutes.

Arsenal had lost possession play-ing out from the back before Suarez angled a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Neymar to slide the ball past Ospina.

Former Barcelona forward Alexis Sanchez fluffed the visitors’ best chance when he headed wide, but Arsenal continued to press and lev-elled six minutes into the second half when Elneny bent a sweet finish into the top corner from 20 metres.

Just when it looked like Arsenal might spring a surprise, however, Suarez’s acrobatics finished the tie before Messi burst into the box and lifted the ball calmly into the net to cap another superb individual display.

“We knew they were going to go and take the game to us,” Suarez said. “In the end we proved we are strong here and made home advantage count.” (rtr)

MUNICH — Franz Becken-bauer has asked to be released early from his television commentator’s contract.

Sky Germany says it accepted the request with regret and that the Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Juventus on Wednesday will be the soccer great’s last as commentator for the network.

Sky quoted Beckenbauer as saying he wanted a break after be-ing a public figure for more than

50 years.Beckenbauer won the World

Cup as a captain and as a coach, and later was the president of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

But a recent inquiry into bribery allegations surrounding Germany’s successful bid for the 2006 tour-nament has raised uncomfort-able questions for the 70-year-old Beckenbauer and his role in complex financial deals before the finals. Beckenbauer has denied any wrongdoing or vote-buying. (ap)

B E I J I N G - C h a m p i o n s Guangzhou Evergrande face an uphill task just to get out of their Asian Champions League group after a 2-2 draw against Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds left them winless after three matches in the continent’s premier club competition.

The big-spending Chinese cham-pions, who splashed out 42 million euros ($45.60 million) on Colom-bian striker Jackson Martinez last month, gave up a 2-0 lead in front of 48,000 rain-drenched fans at the

Tianhe Stadium on Wednesday.Guangzhou had opened their

Group H campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to South Korea’s Pohang Steelers before going down 2-1 to Sydney FC in Australia at the start of the month.

That left the Asian champions of two of the last three years lan-guishing at the bottom of the group on two points with three games remaining and in grave danger of missing out on the knockout stage for the first time.

“It was a wonderful match,

we created many opportunities, but sorry we couldn’t score one more goal,” Guangzhou coach Luiz Felipe Scolari told reporters. “We were under pressure, the op-ponents were very strong and the result was a fair one, we are still improving.”

Chinese champions for the last five years, Guangzhou started the new Super League campaign with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chongq-ing Lifan before recording their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Changchun Yatai.

Scolari, who led Brazil to a World Cup triumph in 2002, is likely to come under increasing pressure if he cannot arrest the faltering start to the season. At least there were signs in Wednes-day’s draw that Martinez, who has scored twice in domestic matches, is starting to find his feet in the red Guangzhou shirt.

After Ricardo Goulart opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute, a neat Martinez pass with the outside of the foot put the Brazilian in to double the lead

10 minutes later.A howler from China keeper

Zeng Cheng let the Reds back into the match after half an hour, however, and substitute striker Shinzo Koroki equalised a minute from time.

The two teams meet again in the reverse fixture in the next round of matches on April 5 where victory will be essential if Guangzhou’s title defence is to have any chance of lasting until their final fixture against Sydney FC at home on May 3.

(rtr)

Ferrari can challenge Mercedes this year - Vettel

MELBOURNE - Mercedes are deserving favourites to win the Formula One championship again but Ferrari have a car that can challenge the Silver Arrows this year, four-times champion Sebastian Vettel said on Thursday.

(rtr)

(kmb26)

(kmb32)

From Wednesday afternoon around 11:00, the boys came one by one with a variety of decora-tions and thronged the Duur Bingin Temple. It was done to prepare the implementation of Ngerebeg ritual. Until midday, shortly after the children gathered in the innermost courtyard of the temple, the series of Ngerebeg procession has been performed, such as prayers and having meals (rice and lawar) done by megibung or eating together.

“This activity is reserved for children working pilgrims,” said the priest of Duur Bingin Temple, Gusti Nyoman Raka.

This activity is particularly followed by boys of the seven hamlets of Tegallalang, namely the Panusuan, Tengah, Tegal, Triwangsa, Tegalla-lang, Gagah and Pejeng Aji. “Actually support-ing devotees (penyungsung) of the Duur Bingin Temple only consist of five hamlets. However, especially for children of Gagah and Pejeng Aji hamlet are involved in this ritual,” he said.

a g a i n s t t h e Benoa Bay recla-

mation is voiced increasingly more powerfully by customary villages in Bali. Unmitigatedly, so far there

have been 26 customary villages rejecting the reclamation. All the villages responded to the decision of customary assembly denoting the highest constitution in the custom-ary village. In other words, their voices cannot be ignored by the authorities and entrepreneurs.

Chief of Sanur customary vil-lage, I.B. Paramartha, said that customary villages rejecting the reclamation move without instruc-tion from anyone. The rejection based on the struggle and prayers against the Benoa Bay reclamation plan on the area of ??700 hectares

is purely based on their conscience. Moreover, there has been real evi-dence as a result of the reclamation of Serangan Island. The impact is not only felt by Sanur, but also by Ketewel village, Gianyar.

“Hopefully, God would bless our collective struggle that is indeed

purely based on conscience,” he said accompanied by chiefs whose customary villages rejected the reclamation in the meeting room of LPD Sanur, Wednesday (Mar. 16).

(rtr)
