JAVAN RHINOCEROS

Javan Rhinoceros, known as badak bercula satu, is one of the rarest and most endangeredlarge mammals in the world. There are only about 5060 remain alive in Java, in other parts ofIndonesia and Vietnam. These rhinos are primarily found in Ujung Kulon National Park in Java.They are grey, almost black when wet, and hairless. The Javan rhinoceros weighs 1500 - 2000 kg andhas a length of 3 - 3.5 m. There is no much difference in size between the males and females butthere is a possibility that the females are slightly bigger than males. Javan Rhinos have one horn, greyor brownish in colour. The horn is not used for fighting but for scraping mud from the sides, pullingdown food plants and for protection of the head and nose when breaking through dense vegetation.Male horns can be 25 cm in length while the females have a smaller or no horn at all. The longesthorn ever recorded is only about 27 cm long and is now in the British Museum in London.

Most Javan Rhinos live in rainforests near the water and enjoy bathing in the mud. Theygenerally love being alone except for mothers and young or the calves. Javan Rhinos can live anaverage of 30-45 years in the wild. Some Javan rhinos may travel 15 - 20 km (9 - 12 mi) within 24hours. Javan Rhinos are herbivorous, they eat up to 150 different plant species such as leaves, smallbranches and young plants and fruit. Java Rhinos have a good sense of smelling and hear very well;but they cannot see quite well or short-sighted.

Javan Rhinos is now critically endangered because of illegal hunting for the medicalpowers of its horn and blood. The horns are also used for handicraft or traditional tools. Anotherreason is habitat loss because of illegal logging.
