B. J. Habibie

Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie was born on 25 June 1936. He is an Indonesian engineer who was President of Indonesia from 1998 to 1999. He replaced President Soeharto, who resigned in 1998. His presidency is seen as a transition to the post-Soeharto era. In his period, he liberalized Indonesia's press and political party laws. In his era, early democratic election was held in 1999. This election resulted in the end of his presidency.

Habibie was born in Parepare, South Sulawesi Province. His parents were Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie and R. A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo. His father was an agriculturist from Gorontalo  and his mother was a Javanese woman from Yogyakarta.

Habibie went to Delft, the Netherlands, to study aviation and aerospace at the  Delft University of Technology. But because of political reasons (the dispute between the Netherlands and Indonesia), he had to continue his study at the  RWTH Aachen University in Aachen, Germany.

In 1960, Habibie received an engineer's degree in Germany. He remained in Germany as a research assistant under Hans Ebner at the Lehrstuhl und Institut für Leichtbau, RWTH Aachen until he conducted the research for his doctoral degree.

In 1962, Habibie backed to Indonesia for three months since he was sick. During this time, he met Hasri Ainun, the daughter of R. Mohamad Besari. Habibie knew Hasri Ainun in her childhood, exactly when they were junior high school and in senior high school in  Bandung. Finally the couple got married on 12 May 1962 and return to Germany shortly afterwards.

The Legend of Pesut Mahakam A long time ago, there was a village in East Kalimantan. The village was near the Mahakam River. The villagers always worked hard. Although they were poor, they were very happy. They also helped each other. In the village, there was a rich family. The head of the family was Pak Pesut. Everybody knew Pak Pesut. He was known not because of his wealth, but because his stinginess. He did not like to help others. His family always ignored people. That’s why Pak Pesut’s family always lived alone and never mingled with others. It was a very long dry season. All the rice fields could not get water properly. The villagers could not harvest the rice. Therefore, all villagers sent some young men to look for a place that had enough water for their rice fields. Finally those young men found a waterfall and it was enough to water their rice fields. Later, all the villagers rushed to the new place. The villagers asked Pak Pesut to join them but he refused it. So, they all left him and his family alone in the village. When they arrived at the new place, they all were very happy. They had enough water from the waterfall.

It was in the morning when Pak Pesut’s wife was cooking their last portion of rice. Suddenly, someone knocked the door. A beggar came to his house.“Go out! I don’t have enough rice,” said Pak Pesut. He was lying. “Please mercy me. I’m so hungry. Give me a little rice please,” asked the beggar. Pak Pesut immediately asked his family to eat the rice. He was worried the beggar would enter his house and stole the rice. “But the rice is still in the cooking pot. Mother is still cooking it. If we eat the rice, it will be very hot,” said his son. “I don’t care! If you all don’t eat now, you will never eat again,” said Pak Pesut. Later, Pak Pesut and his family ate the rice. It was very hot. They needed water to drink. They rushed to Mahakam River. It was so hot that they finally jumped to the river. The beggar saw the incident. He then prayed to God. Amazingly, Pak Pesut family slowly changed into fish. The fish looked like dolphin. Since then, everybody named the fish as Pesut fish.

Firefly or Lightning Bug Photinus pyralis

The Pyralis firefly (also known as the lightning bug) is a common firefly in North America. This partly nocturnal, luminescent beetle is the most common firefly in the USA.

At night, the very end (the last abdominal segment) of the firefly glows a bright yellow-green color. The firefly can control this glowing effect. The brightness of a single firefly is 1/40 of a candle. Fireflies use their glow to attract other fireflies. Males flash about every five seconds; females flash about every two seconds. This firefly is harvested by the biochemical industry for the organic compounds Lucifer in (which is the chemical the firefly uses for its bioluminescence).

This flying insect is about 0.75 inch (2 cm) long. It is mostly black, with two red spots on the head cover; the wing covers and head covers are lined in yellow. Like all insects, it has a hard exoskeleton, six jointed legs, two antennae, compound eyes, and a body divided into three parts (the head, thorax, and abdomen).

Both the adults and the larvae are carnivores. They eat other insects (including other fireflies), insect larvae, and snails.

Fantastic Holiday at YogyakartaLast school holiday, I went to Yogyakarta with my family. My father drove the car. My mother sat beside him. My sister and I sat in the back seats. We woke up early in the morning. My father prepared the car in the garage while mother was preparing food for breakfast and some snacks for us. My sister and I packed some clothes. After everything got ready and we had our breakfast, we left the house at six o’clock. It was about nine a.m. We arrived in Yogyakarta. First of all we visited our uncle. We stayed there for an hour. Then we went to Parangtritis beach. We got there at eleven o’clock. There were a lot of tourists because it was holiday. I saw many foreign visitors too. My parents watched us playing with sand in the beach. We did not swim and take a bath since the wave was rough. After having lunch, we went on our tour to the museum and Malioboro shopping Centre. We drove back to Semarang at 7 p.m. and arrived home at ten. We were exhausted but happy.

Suddenly, the wife saw an animal coming. “My husband, who is he? Wow! He is very handsome with his horns,” said the female deer. “Oh, that’s my friend. He is a dog. By the way, did you say he is more handsome than me?” asked the male deer. He was jealous. “Of course not, you are still more handsome than he is. But I have to admit that his horns are beautiful. If you have those horns, I think you will look very attractive.” “Ok, then, I have an idea how to take the horns from the dog. Just wait here.”

“Hi, how are you?” asked the male deer to the dog. “I’m just fine,” answered the dog. “How about you?” “Not really good. You see my wife over there? She thinks that I cannot run fast like other male deer. Do you mind if we have a running race? I really want to practice,” said the male deer. “Don’t worry, my friend. Let’s have the running race now.”

After that, the running match began. The male deer won. Then, he tried to cheer the dog up. “Well, don’t be sad. You cannot run fast because you have your horns on your head. What if you let me wear the horns,” asked the male deer.“OK, but please wear the hornscarefully.

I don’t want them to be broken.” “Don’t worry. I will be very careful,” replied the male deer. And then he immediately put the horns on his head. “Wow? My wife is right. I really look great with these horns,” said the male deer to himself. Then, they started the running race again. The male deer ran as fast as he could. He ran very fast and did not stop. He was trying to steal the dog’s horns. “Hey come back! Bring back my horns!” the dog was very angry.
