Even though the current news in Jakarta hasn’t been so positive this past fortnight, what with bomb scares, the news of a new building for the House of Representatives that many disapprove

of to the bickering about the national football team; it’s lucky these events haven’t dampened the intentions for the many international acts headed to the capital. We can still enjoy the performances of Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 headed our way this April. While the number of international DJs coming to Jakarta has seemed to dry out somewhat, the void has been filled with great concerts almost every week. So whatever your cup of tea maybe, Jakarta is sure to keep you entertained. Jakarta continues to Rocks!

Jakarta Rocks!

Parents, if you thought after Justin Bieber performed on stage you wouldn’t have anything else left to worry about, well we have some bad news for you. Power pop punk rocker Avril Lavigne will be making her way to Jakarta on the 11th of May to perform at Kartika Expo Center, Balai Kartini. You can blame Mahaka Entertainment for promoting the event and your child’s sudden urge to wear black eyeliner and dye their hair blond. If you’re willing to let your little one release their rebellious side or maybe you want to slam it in the mosh pit yourself, pre sale tickets are now available online.

Avril Lavigne

If you’re wondering why there hasn’t been a massive rave party for quite some time in Jakarta, well fret no more as Kampus has a little something up its sleeve to entertain the househeads of Jakarta. Using Pantai Carnaval for its rave location, the long awaited event will commence on the 27th of May and feature three stages supported by 17 local DJs plus main event guest DJ Dash Berlin, who is currently the #15 ranked DJ in the world according to DJ Mag. HAS BEENKitaro is a well renowned musician, and is considered a legendary composer. Born as the son of a farmer, his real name is Masanori Takahashi, but was called Kitaro by his friends based on a anime character of the same name which they said looked like him. In his younger years Kitaro found a passion for soul and RnB finding inspiration in music by Otis Redding. He began his solo musical career in ’77 with the debut album ‘Ten Kai’ shortly followed by ‘From The Full Moon Story’ which is considered the beginning of new age music. Although his first two albums were successful, he didn’t gain worldwide recognition until many of his songs appeared on the sound track of the movie Silk Road. Not only a composer, Kitaro is also an all round musician, playing an array of instruments including piano, synthesizer, keyboard, drum, percussion and even the guitar. Kitaro himself labels his music as the music of nature because nature is what inspires him to create. IS NoWAfter the long wait to see Kitaro play live on stage, his many fans in Indonesia can finally see him perform at the Jakarta Convention Center. Many were skeptical that the concert would still go ahead after the natural disaster which struck Japan a few weeks ago, but Velvet Productions has confirmed that it will still take place on the 7th of April. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to aid victims of the Japan disaster.

–ATB-

Feature

Regulars to Jakarta’s club scene may have noticed that the Dutch have invaded the country once again, but this time in a good way. How could this be you may ask? Well through the many tracks spun out by the various Dutch DJs around town echoing across the dance floors. This phenomenon has even got the clubbers yelling to the DJ requesting certain Dutch tracks. One probable reason for this is the tunes are slightly different to regular house beats, and different is what Jakarta’s househeads are currently looking for. Who knows how long the Dutch house invasion will continue - all we know is that everyone’s going Dutch!

CD review

037 beatmag.com

Plenty of twitter pre-announcements about this album seems to have had a good impact, with it shooting straight to number one on the Billboard 200 in its very first week. I suspect that the rapper’s statement of retirement has also perhaps given the album a bit of extra clout. Among other producers, the Neptunes lend a hand on a few of the tracks, nicely complimenting Lupe’s original attitude. All in all a solid album from this teetotal, non-clubbing, Allah-worshipping rapper. High album sales and plenty of limelight are sure to follow, whether he likes it or not. DK

Unmasked, Corey Taylor and Jim Root of Slipknot are still rocking tough with medium to harder distortion drives, metal fusion, soul bearing and wisdom still intact on Stone Sour. The album signifies a revival after a long hiatus, with Corey and Tim headed again for worldwide airplay and many an angst-ridden teenager’s bedroom. However, with both guys approaching 40, there is a distinct mellowing in these former hell-raisers. DK

Don’t get me wrong. I love cats. I think they are adorable, lovable, and each have their own unique characteristics. However, I

have to say that I’m more of a dog person, and am of the opinion that there are more people here in Jakarta who shed a few tears when Marley breathes his last breath on Marley & Me. With their loyalty and devotion to man, not to mention how smart they are, I think dogs are awesome and better than cats (sorry, cat people!).

It seems that I was right about the fact that the majority of Jakartans are dog people. Apparently, a community for dog lovers called AnjingKita.com has been established since 2003. Formerly known as BobbySant.com, the members have been increasing every year hitting almost 8000 members already in 2007.

AnjingKita.com provides information regarding dogs such as breeding kennels, vets or animal clinics, dogs for sale ads and dog accessories. Other information includes services for animal tamers, photography, dog training centers, dog grooming, and also boarding kennels for people on vacation who can’t take their loving pet along with them.

BestAnjingKita.com’s activities increase in line with the ever-enlarging member base. In my opinion their recent activities are rather interesting and something new for Indonesia. ‘Chihuahua, Time To Shine’ is a dog show for Chihuahuas, and ‘Doggie’s Day Out’ is a series of events consisting of dog fashion shows, dog gatherings (it’s actually a term for dog owners gathering), quizzes, fun games and talk shows.

“A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A stick will do just fine. A dog doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he will give you his.” Spoken like a true dog lover! Marley & Me author—John Grogan, got it right, all right. Personally, I hope other dog lovers will remember this, for dogs are man’s best friend.

Sign up for AnjingKita.com, and your pet will be your best friend. (Dini Siregar)

So tell us a little about yourself, who you are and how you got into music?I’m an ordinary person, like anyone else really and I’ve always loved music. My father may have been a baritone singer but I don’t think he was the one who lead me to music. I actually stumbled into my passion for music through my friends and close acquaintances. What can we expect from your new album?Of course a lot of fantastic songs and its full of top international artists from German top label Get Physical Berlin. Major labels such as EMI, Universal are also present as well as artists from Paris, like “Nova Nova” and “Paris Combo” What style of music is dominant in this album?I think it contains more eclectic style music with its own portions of breaks, electronic, ethnic, jazz, deep house, indie , disco , and metropolitan beach sounds as well as Brazilian Bossa . The kind of music to listen to while enjoying relaxing a sunny day.Why did you decide to take this project with Metis Bali?I decided to accept the offer by Mr. Sahid and Mr. Dou Dou, the owners of the Metis because it seemed like an interesting project for me. Another reason why the offer was hard to decline is the name Metis, which in Italian means ‘mixed’, which was a perfect description of my music. Are there any special messages you have related to this album? No particular messages really. I saw the project as one that could be interpreted by the listener and let the music become a stimulation of fantasy.

Marco “Polo”

CecereUsing the name of the famous adventurer, Marco “Polo” Cecere also takes his listeners on a journey of musical with every track he creates. We catch up with him as he promotes his latest project with Metis Bali.

Who have you collaborated with in for this album?I collaborated with many artists and many of them have sent me their songs to give the special Marco Polo Touch. Some of the names I worked with include Francoise Hardy, Iggy Pop, Noze, Nova Nova and Paris Combo. I also worked alongside top major music companies that agreed with my music concept of project and granted me the licenses for the songs. Big thanks to them all! It was a very hard and long job to complete, but in the end I did it!Who was your favorite artist to collaborate with? The only artist I like to work with is music! Could you imagine a world without music? I work more with the music and less with the person behind it.What music do you like to listen to when not producing music?I like to listen Dodecaphonic style music .What do you like to do to pass your time? With the very little spare time I have on my hands I like to cycle and enjoy nature while relaxing. How big is music to your life?As I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t imagine a world without music. Music may not be everything for some but I see it as a part of life. You could say music for me is the soundtrack of my life. What next can we expect from you?For sure a lot of new projects on the horizon! With my entertatiment concept brand name, a double album CD is currently in the works titled “Passport ...to Paradise II” and “Electronic Journey part 2”. Another new project is “Temple of Gold’’ which will include cutting edge sounds like I did in my other projects “Life” and can also be heard in “Metis Bali”.

he first one to start with is dedicated to all classical guitar aficionados out there. The renowned group called Ensemble Opus 78 is back

for their annual concert. The group founded by Ronny Iranto started as a community of classical guitarists who named themselves Opus 78, and since then this group has not only survived but also continuously produced young and talented classical guitarists. In total 21 existing guitarists (both teachers and students) rehearse at Ronny’s house and organize two concerts every year.

‘Guitar Concert April 2011’ is Ensemble Opus 78’s coming concert at Erasmus Huis and they are planning to present you with wide range of programs from classical, pop and latin music. Judging by last year’s fantastic ‘Just Guitar’ concert, I am optimistic that this too will be another great and memorable concert.

Sound of

Yes people, we are already in summer again and music is definitely in the air! Classical music concerts, choir performances and even amazing pocket operas are lining up during this month of April. It is one of those rare times when we are busy with many classical performances.

T Moving on, this month of April also offers the taste of a choir brought to you by Camerata Vocale Jakarta. Considering they are the new kids on the block of Indonesia’s classical society, this choir has already proven to be a strong contender when it comes to mastering musical arrangements. Under the direction of Budi Utomo Prabowo, Camerata Vocale Jakarta premiered last year for the very first time presenting a concert called ‘Transkripsi’ (Transcription) at Goethe Haus Institute.

This month, they return for the second concert ever, presenting works of Hugo Distler. This German composer is known mostly for his sacred choral music that is polyphonic and frequently melismatic. His music is also often based on the pentatonic scale. It is rare and unusual to have all Distler’s works as a concert program, which is why this concert is even more interesting. I am very keen to see

Page 41: The Beat Jakarta 36

Classicalmusic

041 beatmag.com

which of Hugo Distler’s opuses Camerata Vocale Jakarta are going to perform.

Last but not least, is Ananda Sukarlan’s pocket opera called ‘Ibu, Yang Anaknya Diculik Itu’ (Mother Whose Son Has Been Kidnapped) that will be played out on this coming 16th and 17th of April at Bank Indonesia Auditorium. This pocket opera based on Seno Gumira Ajidarma’s drama monologue was first premiered last June 2009 and received various enthusiastic reviews. John Paul of Now Jakarta said that: “I feel that the seamless weaving of Spanish, Gamelan, Russian, and even Ice cream elements in the music is a work of genius!”

By definition, pocket opera is a new form of opera that has more practicality in its production. They usually adopt simpler set, with only a few musicians but still with high quality results. For this opera, Ananda created it for one singer only, and in this case it is our leading soprano singer Aning Katamsi. For 35 minutes, Aning will have to sing, act and even recite everything all by herself. I saw it first premier two years ago and this opera without a doubt is a very virtuosic tour-de-force that leaves a strong impression on any audience.

So people, the city of Jakarta has been generous enough to give us some interesting and high quality upcoming concerts that are definitely not to be missed. Since the cinema situation is still not particularly rosy, then going to these concerts could be a remedy for the soul.

What music are you into at the moment?Anything seems right at the moment, nothing in particular. I can listen to The Chiffons in the morning, M.I.A or Bomfunk MC’s while riding my bicycle or even Chrisye’s early stuff. But lately I’m very much into the Detroit sound - that classic Motown funk or old school hip-hop all over again.

What was the first record you bought - any interesting story behind it? The first record I bought was an album of MC Skat Kat called ‘The Adventures of MC Skat Kat and the Stray Mob’. I bought it because of the album cover which had this bunch of cartoon characters I saw in Paula Abdul’s ‘Opposites Attract’ music video. At first I didn’t care what it sounded like, and then after few weeks I kinda liked it, although at that time for me nothing sounded greater than The New Kids On The Block, you know… an elementary school girl and NKOTB, no need for a further explanation! What are your all-time favourite albums? Why?The Original 1977 Movie Sound Track of Badai Pasti Berlalu. I’m a big fan of this movie. I love Christine Hakim’s performance, the pretty boys Roy Marten and Slamet Rahardjo, the fashion, the setting and the music of course, seems like everything is just right. On this album, the arrangement and the lyrics are so well written, I think this is the best collaboration of Yockie Suryoprayogo, Chrisye, Erros Jarot and Guruh Soekarno Putra.

The second is Jackson 5: ‘The Ultimate Collection’. The collection features selections from the group between 1969 and 1975. This always makes me sing along and makes me wanna wear my dancing shoes.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?C.M.B. by Colour Me Badd - so much for those foolish elementary school memories! My friends and I were seeking another boy band that can suited us other than NKOTB... but it surely failed…

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?A Chef! Putting something delightful onto a plate and making people happy eating is my other obsession.

What songs do you choose to start your weekend?Something upbeat. Maybe with top of the lungs vocal Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’, or something calm but groovy like Soulhawks’ ‘Maybe So, Maybe No’ (but I like the Mayer Hawthorne version which is sexier). Or even lots of tribal percussion beat like ‘Sunshowers’ by M.I.A while I'm rolling on my deodorant. …You can imagine I do a lil’ dance.

And song you choose to end your weekend?Dave Brubeck Quartet, ‘Take Five’.

After White Shoes & The Couples Company releasing Vakansi, Sari has been occupied cruising from one stage to another to promote the album.

Besides playing music, Sari is also busy blogging about her passion for art & bicycles. With one of her friends she’s about to start introducing a bicycle clothing line.

Sweet 17One of the most well-known bands in Indonesia, Gigi, just turned 17 this year. To celebrate the birthday a few days ago the quartet held a press conference at Barcode, Lacodefin in Kemang. At the same time they released their newest album: Sweet 17.

At the event, Armand Maulana & co. performed three songs from their newest record, ‘Distorsi Manusia’ which talks about environment, ‘Garuda Fights Back’ worshipping the national football team, and ‘Bye Bye’ is a tale about lost-love.

However, the birthday celebrations are not stopping just there. On May 26 they plan to do a massive concert in Istora Senayan along with other famous musicians like Addie MS and Erwin Gutawa supporting them.

Yang menarik, Rekti The S.I.G.I.T. turut menyumbang suaranya di sini. Sementara lagu kedua berkisah tentang dunia sepakbola.

ArOMAtherApYIt is said that your mood can drastically change with the right scents. Aromatherapy boosts your immune system to help you relax. Rather than prescribed medication, aromatherapy is an alternative solution for illness. It doesn’t cure major illness but it is effective at alleviating many of the discomforts associated with them. Aromatherapy for stress relief can be a wonderful way to take a break from the craziness of life and spend a few moments alone; often that is enough to release stress and keep it at bay.

tAKe A WALKWe’re not saying ‘take a walk’ like, ‘take a hike’. We’re saying take some time out, and go walking outside. Believe me, too much time spent working in front of the computer when you’re stressed out is not productive nor effective. You need to be getting outside and moving in order to clear your head. It gets the blood flowing and your lungs breathing better. After a brief walk, you can focus better, which reduces some of the stress that you may be feeling.

Also you could lose a few pounds due to its metabolism-increasing benefits. If it’s good for the sick, I’m sure it can calm a nerve or two.

From street stalls to fine dining, there’s never a shortage of eating places

in the Kemang area, so it is always nice to find a hidden gem or two amongst all these choices. Recently, we came across a small and simple restaurant that satisfied our craving for good Chinese cuisine.

Tucked away in the Kemang Food Festival area, Feng Ling opened its doors to the hungry public on December 29 last year. Although relatively new, this restaurant has been creating a good buzz lately.

There are only a few places in Kemang that serve good, authentic Chinese food. Feng Ling has filled the void with some excellent choices on their menu. The eatery is relatively small with only a handful of tables inside, but the patio at the back of the restaurant is a firm favourite of the crowds enjoying a good night out with some good company and affordable appetizing dishes.

There are plenty of dishes to choose from, and from what we had that night, we can only say good things about them. We started off with some enoki mushrooms with salted egg (36k) - a delicious appetizer. The salted egg blended well with the deep fried enoki mushrooms for a truly unique look and taste. We also tried the chicken hot and sour soup (28.750) that definitely warmed us up and got us ready for more delectable dishes to come.

We ordered the appetizing Hainan chicken rice set (41.5k) next, that really competes with the best ones out there. The chicken with lemon sauce (34.5k), beef steak a la canton (39.750), salt and pepper squid (34.750), and the tofu hot plate (32k) also acted as excellent accompaniments to our dining experience.

Feng Ling’s fried rice dishes are something not to be missed. The yang chow fried rice, chicken/beef/seafood fried rice, and the salted fish fried rice are all good choices, but you should really go for the Szechuan fried rice with cashew nut. Yummy! All of these dishes are priced at 27.5k.

Feng Ling also do a mean individual lunch/dinner package. With prices no more than 25k, they are truly a great deal. These packages include a choice of steamed/fried/or Hainan rice, a vegetable egg roll and some egg drop soup to go along with your main course. They also do delivery to your office or home, even if it is outside Kemang and its nearby areas! Now that’s a good move.

Feng Ling is open daily at 11 am. On weekdays, they are open until 2 am, and for those of you who enjoy a late night out on the weekends, they are open until 4 am! Good news for insomniacs like us. So the next time you’re in Kemang, give Feng Ling a try for some of the tastiest, 100% halal, no MSG, Chinese cuisine out there!

Welcome to Munchies. This restaurant has been a labour of love for Hamid Sugianto, Budi Kurniawan, and Jason

Aditya. This gang of three amigos opened their exciting eatery at Gandaria City Mall in the south of Jakarta on December 5, 2010.

From the first glance, you can tell that Munchies is a very cozy and intimate place that draws Jakarta’s foodies and drinkers alike. The décor is modern and minimalist, with some edgy touches that heighten the fun factor. Check out the big blackboards on the wall that go all the way to the ceiling!

The food is mostly Western, but you can’t ignore the brilliant local infusion in their creations. One look at the menu and we can see that they really make use of the richness of local ingredients; like the fresh fruits subtly blended into the food.

We started out with the hearty mushroom soup called ‘one up’ (33k), made with three kinds of mushrooms and topped with some crispy mushrooms. The chicken wings (33k) also quickly won our hearts, especially with the unique dipping sauce made from tomatoes, garlic, chili, and sesame oil, which adds a certain zing.

The salad is also noteworthy. You should go for the guava chicken salad (36), which is a great blend of roast chicken, fresh guava and mixed salad topped with a guava dressing.

For the main course, the interestingly named ‘junk food killer burger’ (63k) is sure to satisfy even the most discerning of burger aficionados. The Wagyu beef, layers of crispy onion and tomato hollandaise is a winner. Or for those of you who are sandwich lovers, the farmhouse sandwich (58k) will surely become a new favourite. You just

can’t go wrong with seared striploin on a bed of sautéed mushroom and creamy mustard, topped with mozzarella cheese on focaccia bread.

But the pride of Munchies is really the steak combo (priced at 108k – 148k). You can choose from the beef, salmon, chicken, and white fish, and make your own duet of steaks. The choices of sauce are truly tasty; some of them are uniquely tasty. Try the favourites like the red wine reduction and rosemary demiglace for the beef, the tamarind reduction and green mango ‘rujak’ to go with your salmon, the balsamic reduction, pumpkin puree and strawberry jelly for the chicken, or the mustard cream sauce and sautéed mushroom on your white fish. Kudos to the chef!

Another outstanding dish here is the basa gede prawn pasta (51k). Basa gede is a special and

exotic Indonesian oil, made from 14 different herbs and spices. Another great fusion of East and the West. It is worth mentioning that all of the dishes are made with fresh, premier quality ingredients, and absolutely no MSG!

As for the drinks, Munchies mocktail creations (36k) will surely refresh you. From strawberry & peach, kiwi & apple, mango & orange, passionfruit & strawberry - take your pick!

Munchies is a great new place and a solid addition to Jakarta’s top-rate culinary choices.

After moving to Bali, it’s been close to two years since I last went around to my old hangout places. When I was stuck back

home due to a personal injury I suffered back in Bali, I went home to Jakarta to tend to my wounds. Being stuck on a diet of only meat, I had a sudden urge for burgers, so I decided to call a few old friends to eat at an old burger joint we hung out at back in the day. As we drove to the place, my friends told me that the place has changed a lot since I last seen it, but none of them told me how much until I got there.

Located near the street side pet stalls around Barito, the once small burger counter had now grown to a much larger venue, which could now accommodate more people compared to the three umbrella tables it once sported out front. I remembered a time when the three tables were almost always occupied, so me and my mates were forced to eat in the car. Greeted by the usual long line of customers waiting to receive their burgers, which my friend said could reach outside the door at times, is a common sight here. While in line, I looked around to see the many patrons trying to open their mouths big enough to fit the mammoth sized burger. It’s a hilarious sight sometimes, especially for first timers or little kids, but when you’re a regular like me, you find certain ways to gulf it down.

Finally reaching the counter, we ordered the three most popular offerings, the beef burger, cheese burger, hotdog and lucky for us were able to buy the very last chili dog of the day plus several orders of fries. Burger Blenger only prepares a small number of chili burgers a day and is usually the first items to sell out, so we were very lucky to get one during the rush hour crowd. My friend had already stalked out a table for us so we didn’t have to wait for someone to finish eating to get one.

Without further ado, we instantly opened the boxes and were greeted with the sweet aroma of the grilled meat and warm buns. We divided the burgers and chili dog into equal portions so all of us could enjoy a taste of what we all ordered. A good thing, the burgers are wrapped in plastic,

because eating a burger here can sometimes be a messy ordeal. You can either get mayonnaise or sauce all over your clothes, so it’s a good idea to keep the plastic the burger is wrapped in to lessen the mess.

The burgers are still as juicy as I remember them, and the chili dog was also the rare delicacy I once enjoyed. The fries were the usual frozen kind, so that too hadn’t changed either, which was a little let down though. Apart from moving a few stores down and expanding the store, it’s amazing how this place has still been able to keep the quality of their food (minus the fries) to an extent, it’s no wonder people keep returning to this place over and over again. I will definitely come back when I return to Jakarta again.[Rinaldi]

Where has Matthew McConaughey (We are Marshall) been these recent years? Frankly we don’t care, but here he is again - this time as a well-known criminal defense attorney, Mickey Haller, who operates out of the back of his Lincoln sedan. When Haller gets the case of his career defending a Beverly Hills playboy accused of rape and attempted murder; he never expects it to develop into a deadly chase game of survival for him. It’s been a while since we had a good gripping courtroom drama movie, and this movie might just remind us that smart dialogues combined with crime puzzles are still one of the best formulas to get audiences engrossed in a decent plot.

The story of this movie revolves around a year in the life of three men trying to survive a round of corporate downsizing at their company. It seems the American dream they’ve been having so far is left hanging by a thread. Not only do they see a change to their family lifestyle and the loss of their homes, but also feelings of self-worth. They are then forced to re-define their roles as men, husbands and fathers. A drama at heart, the movie is infused with humour to keep it moving along nicely. For corporate workers, whether you take it seriously or not, maybe you should ask for approval from your CEO first!

Bangkok knockouTAction, Drama. Writer and Director: Panna Rittikrai. Cast: Sorapong

Chatree, Supakson Chaimongkol.

With the legend of Thai action cinema directing, this should be reason enough to watch this Rittkrai film. The action scenes from start to the end are even more of a bonus. Oh, and all the fighting scenes are real without stunts here, so yes, it’s a cool movie! The movie features a range of martial art disciplines like Muay Thai, Capoeira, Kung Fu, and Tai Chi all in one. The story is really simple; a group of ‘fight club’ pals have to save one of their friends who gets kidnapped for some reason... Something like that anyway. Then again, the story is not really what you need to pay attention to here - sit back and enjoy the punches and kicks on screen. Just make sure you don’t get carried away and karate chop your neighbour’s bucket of popcorn!

Last Friday, ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Alberta Ferretti marked the first fashion show for Plaza Indonesia Fashion Week in conjunction with Plaza Indonesia’s 21st Anniversary. This fashion show collaborated with Yayasan Jantung Indonesia to realize the idea that ‘fashion is charitable, and being charitable is always fashionable’. No wonder that the show was packed with invited socialites, no doubt concerned about both fashion and charity.

On reflection, it was really beautiful. The show felt as if it took place in the blooming springtime, with visions of fairies in beautiful clothes. According to Alberta Ferretti, “with this collection I’ve tried to reinvent femininity focusing on a bohemian style embodied by charming girls dressed in floral

Marks The Start of printed peasant tops and long hippie chiffon skirts that express a free and ultra feminine spirit. The naturalness is expressed with fabrics such as silk, flower printed chiffon, macramé lace, crochet and handmade lace.”

The show featured flower-printed long dresses, crocheted miniskirts, shorts and linen trench coats, as well as shirts and light skirts showing off lace bras and shorts underneath. The spring-summer spirit was reflected in the colour and motifs of the fabric - fresh but not too vibrant to keep the romantic feeling. To complete the whole look, the models wore flat sandals, with of them also sporting straw hats.

When I was invited to see an animated interactive performance last Saturday held by the British Council in their old

town revitalization program called ‘Mystery of Batavia’, I knew that that Fatahillah Museum had a secret chamber painted with unfinished mural by Harijadi Sumodidjojo. The mural was accidentally found by a group of British and Indonesian artists in 2010. The mural painting depicts multi-ethnic society in Batavia during the Dutch occupancy. Indonesian natives, Dutch, even Arabian and Chinese people in various period attire are found in the painting. An amazing discovery really, and it got me thinking about the fashion of that era.

Bravo then to the British Council who have released a book titled ‘Tropenecht: Indische en Europese kleding in Nederlands-Indie’ by Dorine Bronkhorst and Esther Wils. The book, roughly translated as ‘Tropical Sea: Indian and European clothing in the Dutch East Indies’, gives many ideas and images about the style in Indonesia during Dutch colonialism, otherwise known as ‘fashion tempo doeloe’. Flipping through its pages gives a real insight to the era, with amazing observations of people’s attire.

What is interesting is that each ethnicity gives influence to others in their style of dressing. For example, it’s common to see European women wearing Indonesian traditional attire, and vice versa. Here are some trends that I found:

1. Kebaya & Sarung According to this book, the white kebaya and sarung are inextricably linked with the ‘old’ Indonesia, or ‘tempo doeloe’ during the early 19th century. The book provides many photos of women in kebaya and sarung, and by 1920, both items were worn at

home by European women and Indonesian women married to Europeans. The book states that the colour is white because in almost all of the photos that feature kebayas, the colour is white.

The kebaya, mostly made of cotton, is suitable for tropical climates like Indonesia. Even many European women chose the kebaya as their everyday attire while they were in Indonesia as seen in the photographs. The kebaya is detailed with lace, white, and made of cotton.

The sarung, as the companion for the kebaya, also came in various styles and motifs. Batik sarungs also became a medium to record stories. On some garments, batik uniquely records traditional motifs and tales as the background.

Women FashionTempo Doeloe

Page 65: The Beat Jakarta 36

Style

065 beatmag.com

2. Corset and Long DressAs I stated before, the way Indonesian and European women dressed during that era influenced each other. While kebaya and sarung as Indonesian traditional attires were also worn by European women, structured long gowns brought from Europe were worn by Indonesians too. From the photos, it seems that corsets were worn by some women resulting in a more defined waist, and padded at the shoulders. Skirts were filled with crinoline to make them more voluminous. This trend lasted from about 1870 until 1910. The book mentions that the Empress Eugine, “the most beautiful woman of the Old Continent”, set the tone in the field of women’s clothing. The crinoline, with or without silk slips, lace and pleated skirts or flower garlands made, was rampant.

Again, white was the favoured colour for the long dress. To complete the look, the hair was kept in a chignon and sometimes accessorized with a hat. The photos capture both Indonesian and European women dressed together in white.

3. KimonoThe Kimono added to the variety of clothing available for both Indonesian and European women. Actually, the kimono was widely considered the new cool thing compared to the former trend of kebayas and sarungs. According to the date listed on the photos, the kimono was popular from 1910 to the 1930s. With its ankle-length bottom and wide sleeves, the kimono was made of silk or crepe. It was often worn for afternoon tea, and the book states that many kimonos were imported from Shanghai and could be bought at Chinese kelontong stores. Some European stores in Batavia sold kimonos too.

When you’re in Jakarta, you really should check out the Mystery of Batavia animated interactive performance detailed above. It’s a great way of appreciating the history of this city we love (or sometimes hate) and it is presented using a combination of art and technology and really captures the mystery of the old town.

Azhar Horo is known for his impressive artworks that respond to various styles within the borders of modern, postmodern and contemporary art itself. One of the artworks that will be displaying is a gigantic painting called ‘Secret Garden’.

‘Kopi Keliling’, or ‘Kopling’ is a collaborative art project put together by a bunch of artists from Indonesia that takes coffee as the theme of the project. They will invite some new artists to listen to their stories, to feel their thoughts and see their dreams through a journey of visuals at this new venue.

Erianto’s works show a fresh artistic approach, marrying paintings created through meticulous technique of photo-realism with (the impression of) objects in the form of cardboard packages, some of them are reinforced with wooden frames.

As the title implies, this exhibition is an homage to Marchel Duchamp. Eddi Prabandono’s installations use Duchamp’s techniques of combining various objects to show the importance of the bicycle as a transportation mode for most Indonesians. This exhibition is curated by Alia Swastika.

There is nothing new about One Zhan’s artworks, but that is what makes him special. ‘Lupaisbiutipul’, his exhibition in Rumah

Komunitas 3F Innovations, Jl. Panglima Polim 5 no. 20, Jakarta, March 19 – 26, 2011, consists of used food wrappers, old vinyl recordings, movie posters, umbrellas, product banners, a piece of something that used to be a window and more.

A DementeD AbsurDity, LiterALLy

One Zhan’s surreal pop style is not usual art school pretentious matter, and there is a personal reason for that. Since 1999, One Zhan has been suffering from dementia. He must use post-it notes to memorize everything that happens in a day and use his intuition to remember friend’s names.

Roberto Benigni’s ‘Life Is Beautiful’ movie changed his life, and later on inspired this exhibition. One Zhan reconstructed his ‘forgotten’ days in his artworks, most obviously seen from the various paintings of his friends on some old vinyl recordings.

Apart from that, the highlight of this exhibition is the absurd painting over of a product banner that features Mbah Maridjan, the late Merapi Mountain guardian. He draws some praying figures on the banner to make it looks like a sajadah (Islamic prayer rug).

Local poets and the indie music scene also inspire his absurdity. He has drawn his main inspiration from Sutardji Calzoum Bachri, an Indonesian poet, and also quirky lyrics from The Upstairs and C’mon Lennon. If he was not destined to be an artist, One Zhan would be a poet. @ribosa

Urban space, and everything inside it, does not always guarantee a glamorous life for its inhabitants. There two kinds of people that

contribute to the urban contrast: Those without free time and those without work hours. ‘Urban In Between’, an exhibition in Philo Art Space, Kemang Timur 90 C, Jakarta, March 23, 2011, Sugihartono and Evi Muhariawan visualizes this phenomenon from the angles of both groups.

Through his artworks, Sugihartono uses the Bajaj, Jakarta’s ubiquitous 3-wheeled traditional taxi as a sarcastic nod to the city’s modernism, represented by woman’s contemporary fashion. This contrast shows how the modern world forces its people to

race forward in time and space, yet all the while depending on other less fortunate people.

Urban paradox and satire are the themes that interest Evi Muheriawan. She shows figures from modern and traditional worlds, but both are the victims of fabricated imagery. In her artworks, urban space that is driven by capitalism and accumulative culture is undermined by her pop-art-ish style. In this particular case however, the pop art genre has bowed down to the forces of capitalism to become a sellable commodity.

Needle & Bitch, the feminist wing of anarchist collective Institute A, held the ‘Sister, Be Strong!’ event to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event itself was a mix of art and photo exhibitions that took place in Bau Tanah street gallery, Cikini Train Station, on March 12 and 13, 2011, featuring artworks by Ika Vantiani, Rumahpohon Activity, MidMad, Media Legal and more.

This event is a solidarity and fundraising campaign to support the struggle for women’s autonomy, abortion rights, HIV/AIDS education and the fight against homophobia. All of these liberal issues are exhibited in a venue that is literally located on the sidewalk, and can be seen easily by everyone that passes by.

Voice on the StreetDinda Advena is a punk photographer, and in ‘Kenapa Musti Jadi Normal’ and ‘Grasp Me Into the Dust’, she captures a dark story that is born out of notions of sexual identity among young Indonesians who are trapped inside traditional norms.

The event itself is quite controversial, since it deals with progressive matters that are not considered as important by most of Indonesians. However, they are brave enough to try and educate society -starting simply from this DIY event in the street.

It’s a really good time to work on yourself, if you’ve got any personal goals or ambitions you have yet to meet. You’ve got energy to spare, but by staying calm you’ll be able to weigh the pros and cons of all your decisions before acting on them. It’s a good idea for you to consider new options and make sure that you’re seeing the big picture. As far as your emotional life is concerned, you feel as if you’ve finally fitted together all the bits of the jigsaw that will add up to lasting relation-ships. It’s one of those times when everything seems to be going along smoothly for you -- your reflexes and instincts are all serving you well! You’ll probably have a lot of physical energy and will be feeling strong. You might want to challenge yourself to an intense workout.

Promotions and salary increases are likely. You will now be prepared to put heart, body and soul into every-thing you do and this will not go un-noticed. Confidence and feelings of self-worth will soar. Your head for finance is better than ever, and you should be able to calmly pore over pages of numbers and facts that didn’t make sense to you just a few weeks ago. Make some big changes. Focus on finances, appearances, comforts and luxury suggests that this period stimulates interest in the material aspects of self-worth. The energy is very disciplined. You could spend time with folks who work very hard and manage their money carefully. It is at last emerg-ing from a steep downturn. It will be at a level that will exceed that reached before.

Someone whom you care for very deeply, perhaps a friend soon to become more than that, is about to bring some great news your way. It imposes a more intellectual note to the pragmatic aspects that it is con-cerned with. Go through your diary carefully and make the best of all the contacts you have previously es-tablished. It is making you act very spontaneously in your dealings with others, and is opening your mind to new and exciting initiatives. All in all, a very sociable and rewarding time. Career-related movements and business meetings should go well. Publicity at this time is good for your reputation. Enjoy yourself, it’s a very positive period.

If you have been caught up in prob-lem with a property purchase, this is your chance to finally nail down a solution. But don’t wait for oth-ers to act, make sure you stay on the case. Communication with loved ones, be they family, lovers or friends should be exceptionally good during this time, so why not tell them just how much you care! In the meantime, maybe there are things that you are trying to get done around the house. You might just want to relax and socialize in-stead. It’s a good period for you to ask someone out, spend time with your sweetie or just enjoy the good times with family. You might hear from friends who will ask you to join them for dinner. Family mem-bers could request your presence for meals.

Bask in the feelings of affection flowing between you, and keep con-versation light. Take your partner to a movie, a concert, or perhaps a theme park. Enjoy! Love matters seem rosy as planetary alignment increases your level of enthusiasm and optimism. Your focus on the lively arts is striking -- you may be singing quite early, putting on a show for your friends and sitting down to watch the drama with your peeps. There will be harmony, love, and affection all around you, and everyone will be considerate and compassionate with each other. Enjoy this period, and gain strength from it! Love, warmth and affection will be easily expressed and read-ily returned. Spend extra time with friends and family during this har-monious and fulfilling period. New love is likely.

During this time, you will put oth-ers before yourself and will be seen as sympathetic, giving support and love to those in need. The time you spend with others is richly reward-ing and shows you that your friend-ship can be relied on. Everyone you encounter will want to stick around. Have you been resisting the idea of commitment in a current romantic relationship? In spite of yourself, you could find your thoughts mov-ing in that direction. The current aspect at play suggests that maybe that’s where the relationship is headed, whether you like it or not. Make your fantasy a reality. You’re embracing love with open arms! It heralds some passionate encoun-ters and intense relationships that are sure to make your heart beat faster.

If you’ve been waiting for news about a loan, mortgage, or other financial arrangement, you should hear something soon. You may have to make changes or adjustments in schedule, but you should find your-self being adaptable and flexible. Changes in your mood mean you can more easily alter your course or change set patterns and be recep-tive to any possible adjustments. You are the focal point of all the positive change that is happening -- in fact, you may be instigating it! Fantastic changes are in store! If some friends are planning a huge get-together, go along. You won’t regret the journey! As your logi-cal, rational mind is in balance with your intuition, abstract and cre-ative thoughts and ideas could be made concrete reality.

In this benevolent atmosphere you have every chance of connecting with people of influence that could open up splendid opportunities for you. Curiosity about the past could come over you. Perhaps a specific historical personage or event has stimulated your interest. As a re-sult, you might want to explore books, the Internet, or other sourc-es of information. You could spend the time composing clever e-mails that make the recipient giggle with glee. Or you might woo someone with a romantic poem or a naughty limerick. You’ll enjoy playing with language and shaping words in cre-ative ways. The current celestial energy indicates that this could be the type of relationship that causes you to grow together - spiritually as well as emotionally.

You should concentrate your high energy levels on work and career matters, as you could be presented with unusual and potentially lucra-tive opportunities. Your ability to work hard, coupled with deter-mined ambition, should produce excellent professional and career achievements. You have plenty of suggestions, you argue your case brilliantly and you make headway with your projects. You might even start to count your chickens before they’ve hatched - just for once, success is a certainty! Promotion or business expansion is likely. Help and support may come from es-tablished and respectable sources, possibly from older colleagues or parents. You can find yourself par-ticularly enthusiastic about a job you see advertised.

Your ability to attract attention, in-vestments, suitors or whatever else you desire is heightened right now, so make sure that all of the right people know that you are available! Your intuitive powers are height-ened, which is saying quite a lot. You can act on hunches that others would keep subdued and expect good results. This is a good time to immerse yourself in the company of other people. Although sometimes you prefer to be on your own, you’ll enjoy more social energies now. Ex-plore your artistic or creative side -- there’s a lot more going on under the surface than you may have real-ized yet. You might be getting a lot of positive feedback from others, and you could soon imagine your-self lucky.

Try to pay attention to the small-est details of your life -- they are the ones that can offer you the best guidance. One of your friends or colleagues needs help in reinvigo-rating their environment, so show them what to do. You may want to check in with the doctor, start a food diary or just commit yourself to a more positive course of action. All should go well. Exercise is on your mind in one way or another -- maybe it’s just all the new run-ners or gym-goers prodding you, or maybe it’s something deeper. In any case, better health is yours if you want it. There could be an under-current of tension as inner issues that have not yet been resolved begin to come to the surface. Don’t suppress them. This is your oppor-tunity to bring them out into the open and begin to heal them. Doing so will bring greater confident.

It’s more likely to be positive than negative, but that doesn’t make it any easier. It’s best to do it quickly, but your good judgment is vital. Others will have to go along with these changes or they will be left behind in a cloud of dust as you, energetically, blaze a powerful trail to better and greater personal am-bitions and achievements. You can tackle big problems -- it’s quite a bit easier than usual for you to tear them apart and make sense of their component parts. A little boredom never killed anyone, and it might give your mind the room it needs to wander freely and come up with new ideas. It is all about recycling -- in all its forms. You can (and should) rid yourself of excess, but you need to make sure that you also reuse anything that can somehow be given new life.

Double Six Still Open: Let the Festivities Begin!

The Beat caught up with Fadi, manager and DJ at Seminyak’s Double Six Club, for a quick chat yesterday. The rumour mill has been working overtime lately about the present and future of 66 Club, and Fadi came in to set the record straight. “Double Six is not closed” he stated, adding: “We will be closing in the second week of September, but until then we’re having the biggest festivals you have ever seen at 66 Club.”

In May they have a massive international DJ planned and for each month until the final demolition party, large festivals are planned to send Double Six off in style.

“We could have just closed the club now and forgotten it, but I know there are a lot of people who have great memories of the place and everyone involved wants to send her off in style,” finished Fadi.

These days along with the weekly covered market, high-end fashion boutiques and lifestyle stores jostle for space with the mounting number of eateries popping up in this pleasant little corner of Seminyak. Sure, Jl. Laksmana might be more well known, but who wants to spend all day stumbling up and down a busy street when Seminyak Square holds everything you need with easy access, ample parking and a relaxed atmosphere all in one place. Tucked at the back of the complex is newly opened Aviary restaurant. The modern, breezy yet minimalist black and white themed interior gives way to a few seating options set outside on the boardwalk area, giving the place a certain trendy European café feel. Don’t let the contemporary design fool you though, the emphasis here is on hearty Western and Asian food, exciting flavours, and above all value for money.

The increasingly popular Seminyak Square shopping centre has come a long way since the early days of empty stores and underground nightclubs…

AvIARY RESTAuRANTUNIT C1, SEMINYAK SQUARE, SEMINYAK.TEL: 0361 732 512

The experienced Jakartan chef has put together a menu that covers everything from brunch through to dinner, with an amply filled menu featuring appetizers, sandwiches, mains, soups, salads, pizzas, pastas, rice and noodle dishes and desserts – not to mention teas, coffees, juices and plenty of other juicy beverages to beat the heat during shopping sessions.

Dragging the missus by her ear past all the boutiques, we arrive at Aviary mid afternoon and get seated al fresco out the front. The attentive and helpful waiting staff immediately rush over and make us feel very welcome as we order a refreshing citrus squash (20k) each. A few friends join us and we soon set about ordering some of the tasty looking dishes off the menu including the pumpkin cream soup (24k), scampi (38k), potato drumsticks (28k), and a bowl of tropical fried rice (30k) to share out as starters. No complaints from anyone so far, but for me the highlight was the scampi – fat juicy prawns in a deep fried batter with mayo style dip. Actually served in half a pineapple, the tropical fried rice also goes down well due to the sweet chunks of tangy fruit.

Starters duly guzzled and it’s time to turn our attention to the mains. The new menu offers plenty of choice, so after much deliberation we settle for the triple deck grilled smoked beef sandwich (36k), spaghetti with prawn tomato and basil (38k), chicken green curry over rice (35k), and my personal favourite; stuffed beef tenderloin roll (50k). Served with mini roasted style potatoes, four thin rolls of succulent tender tenderloin are stuffed with mushrooms and herbs and drizzled in gravy. Delicious taste and fantastic value. In fact, pretty much all the dishes on the menu fall between the 30 – 70k mark, which these days – especially for Seminyak – is something of a rarity. Further good news on the price front is that Aviary are currently running a weekday lunchtime promotion where you can get 50% off on all sandwiches. All the more reason to check out this great addition to the dining options in Seminyak Square.

BALI SPIRIT FESTIVAL

The Bali Spirit Festival is an annual celebration of yoga, dance and music, merging Eastern and Western cultures

through the arts. On March 24th, it was set on Arma Ubud’s intimate garden featuring Shanti Music ‘The Sacred Power of Sound’. The performances continued with ICCR sponsored ‘Rhythmic Folk Manganiars of Rajashtan’ by the Samandar Khanand Group. They brought two distinct artistic streams of Manganiar music, singing styles and Jaipur Gharaana Kathak Dance traditions from Rajasthan. Last but not least the ‘Future Sound of Yoga’ was a sensory experience involving music and movement. Leader Angel guided the class through Hatha poses, vinyasa sequences and freeform dance, while DJ Matt created a soundscape made up of cutting edge electronica, atmospheric sounds, classical music and soundtracks. BosheSaturday26 March

Saturday night at Boshe, turned into a massive party as the legendary DJ Romy got behind the decks

to control the dance floor with his beats. As part of promoting his latest CD, Romy gave a great performance, pumping out high tempo tracks which kept the energy of the evening high and the crowd grooving to his endless flow of you guessed it, solid beats.

To end the week in style, Klapa held the appropriately titled event “Glamorous” which featured guest performer Catherine

Wilson and FDJ Palma. The two main event entertainers took to the stage after the stroke of midnight, with Palma manning the decks while Catherine seduced the crowd with her stunning good looks and exotic voice. Adding to the evenings lineup of glamour was a fashion show and sexy dancers.
