    oodlighting Application

    ystem Approach

Architectural Floodlightingtems are engineered touce the specific distributionsred to illuminate horizontalvertical surfaces from

mal set-back distances, ornting heights. This differstly from sports fields, lighting equipment, wheredistances (tall mounting

hts) and considerablebution overlap are utilized.eneral Floodlighting, cut-off,rol of glare and specialcts are not consideredrtant design c riteria. Neitherhese systems produceient illumination for thetectural Environment.

hitectural Floodlightingands close luminaire-to-ce distances and minimalbution overlap to reduce

number of fixtures required.hitectural features oftente luminaire locations thatess than ideal, requiringial optical features.

atisfy these requirements, hitectural Floodlightingands a wide range of beambutions. Further, the needontrol unwanted lampility, or to produce specialitectural effects, such asking, and surface grazing,

    uire specialized opticalems and accessories.

Seven Distinct Optical Distributions produce the required range to illuminate virtually any surface fromvery close to long distances.

Four Luminaire Sizes provide a range of the most compact fixture scale for the requisite lamp. Fromthe smallest (CFL) in Incandescent, Halogen, Compact Fluorescent and H.I.D. lampings to 70 watt, tothe largest (AFL30) in H.I.D. lampings up to 1000 watt.

Accessories, controlling unwanted lamp visibility, protecting the luminaire from vandalism, or reducingspill light in tight spotlighting distributions, make fine-tuning luminaires to special applicationsrequirements possible. See pages 3-5 for additional details.

Kim provides the widest range of Mounting Options to assure that each luminaire can be mountedrigidly, to preserve aiming and provide years of trouble-free service.

    Coloolor Effects and Lamp Selection

NOTE: The color samples shown are for comparison use only, and do not represent actual fieldconditions (impossible in a printed format.) Actual performance and colors will change basedon lamp and reflector system used. Light Loss Factor (LLF) indicates approximate percentageof source lamp illuminance that is transmitted through the filter.

    mp Selection

selection of lamp should be based oncoloration of the target surfaces beinged. Where the target is predominantlym in color, such as brick, stone, or earth-

paint, High Pressure Sodium isopriate. For whites, cool paint colors, sed metals such as stainless steel, andhe greens in landscape, Metal Halidebe a more appropriate choice.

    Wavelength in nanometers

The spectral distribution chart at left showswhere Metal Halide lamp output is greatest.Note that its output in the red zone, above600nm, is very weak. This means that thislamp will not render red color well, and willtend to tint whites to appear blue and blue-green, as this is where the lamps greatestenergy is produced.

The spectral distribution chart at left showswhere High Pressure Sodium lamp output isgreatest. Note that its output below 550nmis very weak. The strong output in the560nm to 625nm range is what gives thislamp its characteristic yellow-orange colorappearance. These lamps will not renderblue surface colors well, and will tend to tintwhites to a yellow-orange color appearance.

    or Filters

r filters can be used to modify lampration, or to add a dramatic color effectproject. Color filters work simply byking some wavelengths of light, andmitting others. Color filters cannot addr to the light passing through them.efore, when using color filters with

    D. sources, it is important to select anropriate source, as it will have a

matic impact on the appearance of theting light output.

    ptical Design Considerations

rse Square Law Candella / D2

oodlighting, the distance from thenaire to the subject to be lighted has a impact on optical choices. As distancethe luminaire increases, the width of

beam increases. This means thelable light covers a larger area, ucing lower overall light levels insideeam area.

    ine Law (Candella / D2) x cos a

e inverse square law description, it ismed that the surface is perpendiculare source. However, in real-worldcations, luminaires are generally aimed angle to the target surface. This angle

eases the area covered by the beamreduces the corresponding illuminanceny point within the covered area. Thene law considers this and provides ae accurate calculation of illuminance onurface. See page 259 for cosine table.

    m Shape

chitectural floodlighting, the surfacesg illuminated are generally rectilinear ine. Further, to create an efficient lighting

em, waste light should be eliminated.requires a range of beam patterns that

w control of illumination onto desireds, while eliminating waste light, withoutrting to cut-off baffles. By utilizing beampes that are more rectangular, andched to the vertical and horizontalct ratio of the surface being lighted, a

em can produce even illumination usingr fixtures.

    mized Reflector Designs

ddition to producing a beam shapeer suited to the surface beinginated, the distribution of light from theal system must consider the effects ofng (cosine law). By distributing moregy into zones of higher incident angles, reducing energy at lower incidentes, a properly designed reflector will

duce more uniform surface targetinance. Symmetrical Distributions direct more light

at the center, resulting in a system that ishindered by the effects of the Inverse Squareand Cosine Laws to produce uneven surfaceillumination.

Optimized Distributions direct more light athigher angles, less light at the center and evenless light at lower aiming angles, resulting in anoptical system that overcomes the effects of theInverse Square and Cosine Laws to produceuniform surface illumination.

Round Beam Shapes require several fixtures tocover the rectangular surface, producing aninefficient system that provides uneven surfaceillumination.

Optimized Beam Shapes, designed to illuminatethe rectangular surface, require fewer fixtures, producing an efficient system that providesuniform surface illumination.

    Floodlighting

    Flat Lighting

Flat lighting produces a surface that isuniformly illuminated and renders minimalsurface texture and shadowing from surfacerelief. To achieve the best results, maximizeset back distances and keep aiming anglesto a minimum. For large surfaces, increasepattern overlap to reduce shadowing effectsand maintain a Uniformity Ratio of between3:1 to 4:1. Watch out for window locations,as this effect can produce offensive glare tobuilding occupants. Additionally, reflectedglare from luminaires may be visible inwindows located at the same elevation asthe observer.

    Surface Modeling

Surface modeling produces subtle todramatic modeling of surface detail andtexture. For surfaces with deep relief, increase set back d istances. Use moderatelateral fixture spacings to control cross-lighting. For large surfaces, use moderatespacings between fixtures to attain auniformity ratio of between 5:1 and 7:1.Watch out for window locations, as thiseffect can produce offensive glare tobuilding occupants.

    Surface Texturing

Grazing is used when the desired effect isto dramatically accentuate surface textureand detail. Grazing is accomplished byplacing fixtures very close to the surface to

be lighted and utilizing very high aimingangles. Kim Horizontal Spot reflectors arespecifically designed for this app lication. Tosoften the effect, increase set backdistances slightly. For large areas, usemoderate spacings between fixtures toattain a uniformity ratio of between 5:1 and7:1. Watch out for deep reliefs and surfacedetailing, which can create undesirableshadows on the building surface. Considerusing fixed hoods to reduce visibility of thefixture lens(es).

    o Beam Patterns

nature of floodlighting mandates versatility. The tremendousety of surfaces and objects to be illuminated is furtherplicated by variables like fixture location and distance. The CFL

es satisfies this need for flexibility: Two available beam patternsbe used individually or in combinations to illuminate any objectdistances of 3' to 30' - using the CFL1 Wide Flood and laser-likeracy of the CFL6 Narrow Spot reflector. Both beam patterns

erate high efficiencies and outstanding uniformity of illumination.page 26 for beam properties and application guidelines.

    CFL1

    CFL6

    Cast Housing with Interchangeable Optics

CFL Series housing and door frame are precision die-castingsintegral cooling ribs that dissipate heat allowing the electricalponents to operate well below their allowable limits. A singlesing will accept both optical systems which are easilychangeable on the job. Because floodlighting is as much art asscience - final adjustments on the lighting effect maysionally require changes of the beam pattern. Changing beamrns is a simple task, and provides the CFL Series with flexibility

    ne-tuning projects on the jobsite.

    Standard Heavy Duty Swivel

The ingenious CFL standard heavy duty swivel is acomplement to the housing design. The swivel isprecision die-cast aluminum with concealed internallocking teeth. Locking adjustments are at 6intervals.Adjustments are made by loosening the recessedallen head screw. The swivels K"NPSM has a solidbrass locknut for mounting. Swivel components areanodized pre-treated prior to finishing for maximumcorrosion resistance.

    Optical Control

TheCFL Series has a variety of optical accessories to

control glare and increase the visual effectiveness ofthe lighting scheme. Shielding devices are carefullyengineered to prevent shadows and preserve beamefficiency while reducing undesirable transientbrightness. Barn Doors are a familiar accessory thatallow for field-adjustable glare shielding. The FixedHood is a moderate shielding device and the FullShield is a complete shielding device. Both areideally suited for applications close to walkways, driveways, or roadways. See page 30 for details.

    CFL1Wide Flood

The CFL1 Wide Flood beam pattern is

engineered to illuminate surfaces that are

more horizontal than vertical, or wider areas

when wall mounted. The CFL1 is designed

for broad illumination with the fixture

relatively close to the lighted surface and

    maintains excellent uniformity throughout its

    beam pattern. Recommended distance

from the lighted surface is 3 ' to 15'depending on lamp and wattage.

The10 Series satisfies this need for flexibility: Seven available beamrns can be used individually or in combinations to illuminateobject from distances of 3' to 100' - from the AFL11 Wide Floode laser-like accuracy of the AFL16 Narrow Spot reflector. The12 Vertical Flood has a unique optical design that is ideal foring both vertical and horizontal surfaces with very lowtness above the main beam. All seven beam patterns are thelt of precision Kim reflector systems that generate highencies and outstanding uniformity of illumination. See pages9 for beam properties and application guidelines.

    Cast Housing with Interchangeable Optics

AFL10 Series housing and door frame are precision die-ngs with integral cooling ribs that dissipate heat allowing therical components to operate well below their allowable limits. Ae housing will accept any of the seven optical systems whicheasily interchangeable on the job. Because floodlighting is ash art as it is science - final adjustments on the lighting effect

occasionally require changes of the beam pattern. Tomplish this, the door frame is opened and removed with slipes allowing easy access to the reflector module. Each reflectorule is a one piece assembly held in place by four pressure fitners and easily removed without tools for access to the ballastpartment. Changing beam patterns is a simple task, anddes the AFL10 Series with flexibility for fine-tuning projects on

    obsite.

    Standard Heavy Duty Swivel

TheAFL10 standard swivel is a complement to the housing design. The swivel is precision die-cast with concealed internal lockingteeth. Locking adjustments are at 5 intervals. Adjustments aremade by loosening the recessed allen head screw on the swivel. For added strength at the K"NPSM mount, the aluminum swiveltransitions to a heavy stainless steel nipple.

    Optional Heavy Duty Swivel

Specifically designed for installations where the fixture is mountedclose to the ground or susceptible to vandalism. The Heavy DutySwivel is constructed of heavy cast low copper aluminum withlocking teeth providing adjustability in 5increments and a full 360horizontal rotation. The swivel mounts directly to a 2"pipe-size tenon, with heavy duty C"stainless steel set screws provided to firmly lock

the fixture in place. See page46

    for details.

    Optical Control

The AFL10 Series has a variety of optical accessories to controlglare and increase the visual effectiveness of the lighting scheme.Shielding devices are carefully engineered to prevent shadows andpreserve beam efficiency while reducing undesirable transientbrightness. Barn Doors are a familiar accessory that allow for field-adjustable glare shielding. The Fixed Hood is a moderate shieldingdevice and the Full Shield is a complete shielding device. Both areideally suited for applications close to walkways, driveways, orroadways. The Grid Louver is engineered to maximize beamefficiency while minimizing glare and shadows from the internalvanes. The GL4 louver is available for use with the AFL15 andAFL16. The Lexan Lens Shield is available for applications wherevandalism is anticipated. The Color Filter Assembly is designed tobe used alone or in conjunction with the Barn Doors, Fixed Hood,or Full Shield. Dynamic floodlighting effects are possible by utilizingany of the color filters specifically engineered for use in hightemperature floodlighting applications. See page 47 for details.

    AFL-LS Lexan Lens Shield

    Vandal Protection

An optional Lexan lens shield is available for applications wherevandalism is anticipated.NOTE: Lexan is a polycarbonate plastic, therefore useful life islimited by UV deterioration from sunlight and metal halide lamps.Planned replacement at regular intervals is recommended whenusing this option.
