RUANG LINGKUP DAN PENGERTIAN GEOMORFOLOGI 1. Pengertian Geomorfologi berasal dari tiga akar kata bahasa Yunani yaitu geo yang berarti bumi, morphe yang berarti bentuk dan logos yang berarti ilmu. Dengan demikian dapat diartikan sebagai ilmu yang mempelajari tentang bentuk bumi. Definisi-definisi dari para ahli : 1. Thornbury (1969) “... it would mean a discourse on earth forms. Generally, it is thought of as the science of land forms and it will be so used, although we shall extend it to include submarine forms. 2. Strahler (1970) The science of geomorphology treats the origin and systematic development of all types of landform and is a mojor part of physical geography. 3. Cook dan Dorncamp (1974) Geomorphology is the study of landforms and in particular of their nature, origin, processes of development and material composition. 4. Verstappen (1983) Geomorphology can be defined as the “science” dealing with landforms makin up the earth surface, both above and below sea level and stressing their genesis and future development as well as their environment.
