    Development of fibrosis in chronic inflammation. The persistent stimulus of chronic

    inflammation activates macrophages and lymphocytes, leading to the production of growth

    factors and cytokines, which increase the synthesis of collagen. Deposition of collagen isenhanced by decreased activity of metalloproteinases.
