Igneous rocks, getting their name from the Latin word ignis, meaning “fire”, have been crystallized from magma. Magma that is trapped in small pockets inside the earth solidifies and become intrusive igneous rocks. Magma that spills put onto the earth’s surface due to volcanic eruptions cool down and becomes extrusive igneous rocks. Examples of igneous rock are, among others, granite, quartz, and potassium feldspar.

For thousands, even millions of years, little pieces of our earth, including animal and plant remains, have been worn away by wind and water. They are washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of rivers, lakes and oceans. Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited in this way. These layers are pressed down more and more through time, until the layers slowly turn into rock-sedimentary rock, the surface of which usually looks like rippled dunes.

Metaphoric rocks, getting their name from the Greek words meta and morphe, meaning “a change of form”, are formed when the minerals of preexisting igneous and sedimentary rocks have been changed by heat and pressure.
