Twelve 2nd year students of ESI Medical College, K. K. Nagarwere suspended on Dec. 23 for allegedly harassing a juniorstaying in the hostel. This created some tension among thestudents.

While the Central Government-run college remains closedfor study holidays ahead of upcoming exams, the 12 studentswere called for questioning by the Dean after the reportedincident.

The students, all day scholars, allegedly went to the men’shostel on Dec. 21 and ragged the first-year student. The victimlodged a complaint with the Dean who ordered an inquiry.

A student said most inmates of the college hostel were fromoutside Chennai and some had problems as they were notwilling to ‘obey’ their seniors. “This started as a minor incidentin which seniors teased the junior but it quickly snowballed intoan ego clash when the junior student’s parents and friends gotinvolved,” said another student.

A staff member said that the senior students could have beenlet off with a warning but the victim’s family mounted pressureand insisted on suspension.

However, no police complaint has been lodged.

Total reservoir storage at90% of full capacity

By Our Staff ReporterEven though the rains have subsided in the city and its

suburbs, the city’s reservoirs in Red Hills, Cholavaram,Poondi and Chembarambakkam continue to registersubstantial inflows.

The total storage in them on the morning of Dec. 25 was9915 million cubit feet (mcft) which is almost 90% of theirtotal capacity of 11057 mcft. The total storage on the samedate last year was only 2985 mcft.

The total capacity over the past one week has been 9869mcft (Dec. 20), 9868 mcft (Dec. 21), 9877 mcft (Dec. 22),9891 mcft (Dec. 23) and 9895 mcft (Dec. 24) which showsthat the daily inflow more or less matches the daily outflow.

The average total daily inflow since Dec. 15 has beenaround 650 cusecs per day.

As on Dec. 25, Poondi has a storage of 3077 mcft asagainst its full capacity of 3231 mcft; Cholavaram 716mcft as against the full capacity of 881 mcft; Red Hills 2914mcft as against its full capacity of 3300 mcft andChembarambakkam 3208 mcft against its full capacity of3645 mcft).

The two desalination plants also contribute around 200million litres daily to the city.

According to Metrowater officials, the city will enjoy acomfortable water supply position during the next 12months.

This nugget of wisdom was proved right during the recentChennai floods that stripped clean the city without uproot-ing a single tree on the banks of the rivers that have riventhe city with their destructive arms, snaking through thecity’s good, bad, stinking waterways.

Riverine simplicity is evocative of eternal values, but itscommercialisation is grossly ugly, as the unwritten epitaphof some two dozen patients in a hospital, parts of which werelocated in a river, would vouch for.
