MUHAMMAD SYAEFUL FAHMI.

    ABSTRACT

MUHAMMAD SYAEFUL FAHMI. Preparation and Characterization of Polystyrene Foam-Starch Polyblend. Under the direction of SUMINAR S. ACHMADI dan TETTY KEMALA. Polystyrene (PS) foam is a polymer that is widely used but not biodegradable. Therefore, PS foam-starch polyblend was developed. The effect of glycerol as plasticizer was evaluated based on mechanical and thermal analyses. PS foam-starch polyblends were produced by mixing PS foam and starch solution with composition ratios of 60:40, 65:35, 70:30, 75:25, and 80:20 percent by weight. Polylactic acid (20%) was added as compatibilizer. The polyblends were analyzed using tensile strength test, thermal properties, and density. The PS foamstarch polyblends were white opaque in color and fragile. The properties of tensile strength and density of the polyblends were in the range of that of pure PS foam, indicating that they can be used as materials for PS foam. The tensile strength increases as increasing of PS foam constituents with the best ratio of 80 PS foam to 20 of starch. The PS foamstarch polyblends tensile strength and density increase with the increasing PS foam. Additional amount of glycerol did not affect the thermal property, but has caused a slight decrease in tensile strength and density.
