Results of the investigation indi-cated the mode in use by perpetra-tor was similar to the case ensuedon Jalan Pulau Bungin and JalanSegina, Denpasar. Their mode oftentargeted some boardinghouseswhere perpetrator usually took ad-vantage of the key left on the bike,by means of T-letter key and made aswitch.

Even, based on the description thevictim, characteristics of the perpe-trator were also similar to the sus-pect Ryan. Police did investigationin the field arming with the infor-mation on the characteristics of per-petrator. After some time, the offic-ers saw the suspect Ryan aroundJalan Teuku Umar, Denpasar. Thesuspect was driving a Vixion motor-bike with police plate 6671 IA.

Officers had followed the suspectuntil his boarding house. Surpris-ingly, at the boarding house of thesuspect Ryan was also found a mo-

Headmaster of SMAN 4Denpasar, Wayan Rika, suggestedNgurah Ardiana not to push him-self because he still had opportu-nity to take a follow-up exam. How-ever, since he got permission fromhis physician, it was entirely up tothe family of Ardiana.

Behind it, Wayan Rika gavepositive appreciation to the achieve-ment motivation of his student. They had prepared themselves thor-oughly, but bad luck beyond humancapabilities was unavoidable. “Letus pray for Ardiana in order hecould graduate with a good perfor-mance,” he said.

According to his family, Ardianahad suffered from dengue fever

since last Saturday. As there was noindication of typhoid, the physicianrecommended him to take inpatienttreatment while monitoring hishealth condition. Moreover, theplatelet of Ardiana once declined to41. When interviewed, Ardianahimself insisted on following thenational exam at the school until theend. The reason, his preparation hasbeen well done and his physicalcondition began to recover. Mean-while, the time in hospital was usedto have a rest. “I have confidenceto pass even though I answered thetest while being infused,” he said.

In SMAN 4 Denpasar, it was re-corded 279 students attended thenational exam. On the English testlast Tuesday most students consid-ered it pretty easy. (025)

At the same time, itposes a response to our com-plaint to Perum PercetakanNegara printing house,” he said.

Suasta added his party had tosend a complaint letter to PerumPercetakan Negara because itsperformance had made his partyvery confused and hindered thesmooth implementation of thenational examination for seniorhigh school/vocational highschool. Moreover, such state-owned printing press was alsoacting as a printer for the testsheets of national exam of sec-ondary school in Bali Provinceso the same chaos might happenagain if not given a warning.

According to Suasta, therewere three important clauseswarned in the complaint letter.Firstly, it was about the mistakerelated to different contentsfrom the label written on thecover. Secondly, it lacked forcomputer answer sheet in theexam test package and the un-availability of reserve answersheet in the reserve exam testpackage so some students didnot get the answer sheet evenly.Thirdly, his party also ques-tioned about the late distribu-tion of the exam materials to theregion and sub region orschools as the UN organizer.“We expect, the unsatisfactoryperformance of the PerumPercetakan Negara in theimplementation of nationalexam for SMA / SMK wouldnot happen again in the imple-mentation of the upcoming na-t ional exam for secondaryschool held on next Monday(Mar 29),” he said hopefully.(kmb13/08)

Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu’s awkwardly timed visitto Washington this week closedwith a meeting with PresidentBarack Obama that seemed in-tended to pull the curtain on the dis-pute without resolving it.Netanyahu never had to apologize, nor publicly roll back a Jewishhousing plan for east Jerusalem thatembarrassed and infuriated his U.S.backers.

Netanyahu’s visit to the WhiteHouse on Tuesday evening went onfor hours longer than planned, apossible sign of a thaw. But in abreak with custom and an apparentsign of the prickly relations betweenthe two governments, reporterswere not invited to see the twoshake hands and begin their discus-sions.

Paying a visit to Washington thathad been planned before the hous-ing crisis flared, Netanyahu met topObama administration officialswhile at the same time publicly andfirmly rebuffing theadministration’s criticism of Israel’slong-standing policy of buildinghomes for Jews in east Jerusalem.

The visit could have been a cel-ebration of the inauguration ofpeace talks recently engineered bya U.S. envoy after months of try-ing. New talks were a campaignpledge for Obama, whose willing-

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Presi-dent Barack Obama signed intolaw historic, sweeping reformsTuesday that lay out health carecoverage for almost every Ameri-can and realize the dreams of gen-erations of past US leaders.

“Today, after almost a centuryof trying, today after over a yearof debate, today, after all the voteshave been tallied, health insurancereform becomes law in the UnitedStates of America,” Obama said.

“The bill I’m signing will set inmotion reforms that generations ofAmericans have fought for andmarched for and hungered to see,”he told a jubilant, packed audienceat a White House signing cer-emony.

Delighted lawmakers and guestscheered and whistled as Obamamade good on his campaign vowto overhaul America’s embattledhealth care system, enacting a hugeshift in US policy and the biggestsocial legislation in over four de-cades. The House of Representa-tives narrowly approved the Sen-ate-passed legislation by 219-212late Sunday, using the Democraticmajority to muscle the measurethrough a united Republican oppo-sition.

With a package of fixes still tobe voted on, the 940-billion-dollaroverhaul will extend coverage tosome 32 million Americans whocurrently have none, ensuring 95percent of under-65 US citizenswill have health insurance.

The historic signing came a cen-tury after president TheodoreRoosevelt first called for a nationalapproach to US health care, andafter past leaders such as BillClinton tried and failed to reformthe creaky, costly system.

For the first time ever, almostall Americans will be required tobuy insurance or face fines. Amongother key reforms, the new lawbans insurance companies fromdenying coverage to people withpre-existing conditions, from drop-ping clients who get sick or fromsetting lifetime caps.

Those new talks are still promisedbut delayed indefinitely by the latestcrisis, and Netanyahu’s two days inWashington served to showcase dif-ferences with Washington.

Netanyahu was greeted uponlanding Monday by critical remarksfrom Secretary of State HillaryRodham Clinton. Speaking to mem-bers of a pro-Israel lobby, she statedbluntly that Israel’s construction ineast Jerusalem jeopardized peacetalks and undermined the U.S. roleas a mediator.

Hours later, Netanyahu told thesame forum, the American IsraelPublic Affairs Committee, that Israelwould continue building homes inthe city at the center of the Jewishfaith. “Jerusalem is our capital. It’snot a settlement,” the Israeli leadersaid, to a prolonged standing ovation.

On Tuesday, he reiterated that ideain stronger terms in meetings onCapitol Hill, where he was receivedwarmly, and made sure to pass thosecomments on to reporters afterward.

The Palestinian demand for a haltto construction in Jerusalem as a pre-condition for talks, he said, was “un-reasonable and illogical.”Netanyahu’s comment was directedat the Palestinians, but the U.S. ad-ministration has been making a

nearly identical request. While rhetorical sparring contin-

A similar spat last year ended ina similar fashion: The Obama ad-ministration pressured Israel to haltall settlement construction in theWest Bank to get peace talks started, but Netanyahu agreed to a limitedslowdown, not to a full freeze. Facedwith Israel’s refusal, the administra-tion gave way.

Something similar may be afootnow — a half-measure offered byIsrael that Washington accepts be-cause it fears the consequences of afull confrontation with Israel and itspowerful supporters in the UnitedStates.

Netanyahu’s effusive receptionon Capitol Hill was evidence of thepower of Israel’s arguments aboutthe choices it makes for self-defenseand the sway of its politically ac-tive supporters in the United States. The threat that Iran might soon pos-sess a nuclear weapon has madeIsrael’s case stronger and limited thepressure tactics available to a peace-minded American president.

The recent fight was triggered byIsrael’s announcement two weeksago that it will build 1,600 newapartments in east Jerusalem, thelargely Arab city section it capturedfrom Jordan in 1967. Israel annexedthe area in a move the internationalcommunity has never recognized.

US President Barack Obama signs the health insurance reform billin the East Room of the White House

After century-long fightUS enacts health reforms

by slim margin: poll“You’ve made history,” Vice

President Joe Biden told a beam-ing Obama. “Mr President, you’vedone what generations of not justordinary, but great men and womenhave attempted to do.

“You have turned, Mr President, the right of every American to haveaccess to decent health care intoreality for the first time in Ameri-can history.”

In the ceremonial East Room, where president Lyndon Johnsonsigned the civil rights bill into lawin 1964, there was a party atmo-sphere as euphoric Democratsgathered to witness the act, shar-ing hugs and slapping palms.

Among them were Vicki andCaroline Kennedy, the widow andniece of the late Ted Kennedy, whostruggled for almost five decadesto enact health care reform, thecause of his life.

Obama used some 20 differentpens to sign the 2,000-plus pagebill, intending to give most of themto guests as souvenirs of the mo-mentous occasion.

The Senate is expected thisweek to take up the changesneeded to their initial legislationand approve them separately un-der rules that prevent Republicansfrom using a parliamentary tactic, the filibuster, to indefinitely delayand kill the measure.

Abortion takes center stage inUS health care debate

But Obama still has a hard selldefending the reforms ahead of thekey congressional mid-term No-vember elections, with Republi-cans deeply angered by the legis-lation, which they say is too costly.

“We’ve heard a lot today abouthow historic this bill is, and it’strue,” said Republican NationalCommittee (RNC) chairmanMichael Steele in a statement. “Itis an historic betrayal of the clearwill of the American people. It isan historic loss of liberty.”

House Republican MinorityLeader John Boehner added: “Thisis a somber day for the Americanpeople. Americans have never feltmore disconnected from their gov-ernment than they do today.”

GAZA CITY (AFP) – Israeli warplanes launchedan air raid overnight near the Jabaliya refugee camp inthe northern Gaza Strip but there were no injuries, Pal-estinian security officials said Wednesday.

The air raid targeted an area militants have used tofire rockets into southern Israel in recent days, officialssaid.

An Israeli army spokesman said that planes had car-ried out a raid against a hangar that contained weap-ons, in response to rocket fire into Israel.

Approximately 35 rockets have been fired at Israel fromthe Gaza Strip since the beginning of the year, and over330 rockets have been fired into the Jewish state since theend of a 22-day Israeli offensive in January 2009.

One such attack earlier this month killed a Thailabourer.

An intelligence official said theshelling destroyed five mud brick com-pounds used by Taliban militants, whilean administrative official based inKalaya confirmed the death toll.

Under US pressure, Pakistan has inthe past year significantly increasedoperations against militants in its north-west including the tribal belt.

Washington says the militants usePakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal beltto plot and stage attacks against NATOtroops stationed in Afghanistan.

The United States has also steppedup missile strikes in the tribal belt. Theraid late Tuesday was the latest in nearly100 US drone strikes that have killedmore than 830 people in Pakistan sinceAugust 2008.

Pakistan’s foreign minister and armychief were in Washington on Wednes-day for talks with US Secretary of StateHillary Clinton, where they were ex-pected to push to secure armed dronesfor their own military.

JAKARTA - A former ArmyKopassus (Special Force) com-mander has dismissed allegations byan American journalist that the forcewas involved in political murders inthe runup to the general elections inAceh in 2009.

In a statement to ANTARA Newson Tuesday, Soenarko admitted thatpolitical life in Aceh prior to andduring the 2009 legislative electionin Aceh was marked by great dyna-mism. BofA to start reducing mortgage principalexpanding “negative amortization”loans.

According to a summary of theprogram obtained by Reuters, Bankof America pledged to offer an “earnedprincipal forgiveness” of up to 30 per-cent in two stages. The lender will firstoffer an interest-free forbearance of

principal that the homeowner can turninto forgiven principal annually overfive years, provided they stay currenton their payments.

The forgiveness can allow ahomeowner to bring the loan valueback down to 100 percent of thehome’s value over five years, accord-ing to the plan, confirmed by sourcesclose to the matter.

The plan, to begin in May, isamong the first by a U.S. mortgagelender that takes a systematic approachto reducing mortgage principal totackle the thorny issue of preventingforeclosures when home values dropwell below the amount owed.

A Bank of America spokesmandeclined comment.

Announcement of the programin Washington comes as U.S. lawmak-ers and housing advocates are becom-ing increasingly vocal about the needfor principal writedowns in order tosave homes on a large scale. Amidstubbornly high unemployment, homeowners are seen as more likelyto simply abandon an unaffordablemortgage when they have no equityor are deep “underwater” on the loan.

The U.S. Treasury’s mortgagemodification program has largely re-lied on reducing interest rates, and hasbeen criticized for failing to address asteep and painful reduction in homevalues.

The announcement also willcome two days after two Washingtonstate residents sued Bank of Americafor allegedly reneging on a promise itmade to modify troubled mortgageswhen it took $25 billion in taxpayerbailout money.

The lawsuit alleged that thelender has “seriously strung out, de-layed and otherwised hindered” modi-fications because it had financial in-centives to do so.

Negative amortization Under the plan, Bank of America

also will slash the principal balanceon the worst of the high-risk mort-gages written during the height of thehousing boom, the so-called “pay-ment option” adjustable rate mort-gages that had a negative amortiza-tion feature that allowed the princi-pal balance to grow.

On such loans that are delinquentand in danger of imminent default, thelender will announce that it will cut prin-cipal to as low as a 95 percent of theproperty’s value.

Bank of America lender also willexpand its modification program to con-sider payment reductions on prime hy-brid adjustable rate mortgages that havefloating interest rates after two years andwill extend its National HomeownerRetention Plan by six months until theend of 2012.

The bank expects to be operation-ally ready to start the earned principalreduction plan in May. It plans to iden-tify mortgages that may be eligible forthese programs and proactively contacthomeowners to request documents toverify eligibility.AFP PHOTO/Stan Honda / FILES

POLICE are investigating claims singer Cheryl Cole was the targetof a rape threat, according to a U.K. report. British TV presenter DermotO’Leary, who stars alongside the Girls Aloud beauty on Simon Cowell’stalent show “The X Factor,” alerted cops to a voice message on hisphone aimed at Cole. In the message the caller allegedly made vilethreats about the 26 year old, reports Britain’s The Sun.

A source tells the publication, “The message was of a sexual, threat-ening and sickening nature. Dermot was horrified when he heard it. Hethought at first it was a sick wind-up (practical joke), but soon realizedthere was something sinister going on. Somehow this caller has triedto get hold of her number and somehow accidentally got Dermot’s. Ifthey were prepared to go to that effort, who knows what they would beprepared to do?”

Cole is reportedly aware of the message, but the singer’s spokesper-son reveals she has not listened to it. A police representative said, “Weare investigating claims of an offensive message being left on a mobiletelephone. It follows a complaint from a member of the public.”

OPRAH Winfrey has settled adefamation lawsuit filed by a head-mistress she had accused of perform-ing poorly at her South African girlsschool, where some students claimedthey were abused, lawyers said Tues-day. The lawsuit by former headmis-tress Nomvuyo Mzamane claimedWinfrey defamed her in remarksmade in the wake of the 2007 sex-abuse scandal at the school.Mzamane said she had trouble find-ing a job after Winfrey stated she had“lost confidence” in her and was“cleaning house from top to bottom.”

A trial had been set to start nextweek in federal court in Philadelphia.Winfrey and several schoolgirls hadbeen expected to testify. A joint state-ment released late Tuesday by law-yers for both sides said Winfrey andMzamane met to resolve their differ-ences. “The two parties met womanto woman without their lawyers andare happy that they could resolve thisdispute peacefully to their mutual sat-isfaction,” the statement said.

Winfrey was visiting her school lastweek when U.S. District JudgeEduardo Robreno refused to dismissthe lawsuit, concluding Mzamane hadpresented enough evidence to go totrial. Court papers suggest Mzamaneis again working at a school in Africa, but a Winfrey spokeswoman declinedto say if the meeting took place dur-ing Winfrey’s trip. The parties do notplan to discuss terms of the settlement, according to the spokeswoman, whoworks with Winfrey’s productioncompany, Harpo Productions, whichalso was a defendant in the suit.

One of Mzamane’s lawyers,Timothy McGowan, declined tocomment Tuesday beyond what wasin the joint statement.

Mzamane, born in Lesotho, for-merly worked at the privateGermantown Friends School inPhiladelphia and was living in thecity when she sued two years ago.She earned $150,000 a year asWinfrey’s headmistress.

And on Thursday, chemists at ascientific conference in San Fran-cisco will tackle the issue of chemi-cals and dwindling bees in responseto the new study. Scientists are con-cerned because of the vital role beesplay in our food supply. About one-third of the human diet is from plantsthat require pollination from honey-bees, which means everything fromapples to zucchini.

Bees have been declining over de-cades from various causes. But in2006 a new concern, “colony col-lapse disorder,” was blamed forlarge, inexplicable die-offs. The dis-order, which causes adult bees toabandon their hives and fly off to die,is likely a combination of manycauses, including parasites, viruses, bacteria, poor nutrition and pesti-cides, experts say. “It’s just gottenso much worse in the past fouryears,” said Jeff Pettis, researchleader of the Department ofAgriculture’s Bee Research Labora-tory in Beltsville, Md. “We’re justnot keeping bees alive that long.”

This year bees seem to be in big-ger trouble than normal after a badwinter, according to an informal sur-vey of commercial bee brokers citedin an internal USDA document. One-third of those surveyed had troublefinding enough hives to pollinateCalifornia’s blossoming nut trees, which grow the bulk of the world’salmonds. A more formal survey willbe done in April.

“There were a lot of beekeepersscrambling to fill their orders and thatimplies that mortality was high,” saidPenn State University bee researcherDennis vanEngelsdorp, who worked

Has even the Last Supper beensupersized? The food in famouspaintings of the meal has grown bybiblical proportions over the lastmillennium, researchers report ina medical journal Tuesday. Usinga computer, they compared the sizeof the food to the size of the headsin 52 paintings of Jesus Christ andhis disciples at their final meal be-fore his death.

If art imitates life, we’re introuble, the researchers conclude. The size of the main dish grew 69percent; the size of the plate, 66percent, and the bread, 23 percent, between the years 1000 and 2000.

Supersizing is considered amodern phenomenon, but “whatwe see recently may be just a morenoticeable part of a very longtrend,” said Brian Wansink, a foodbehavior scientist at Cornell Uni-versity. The study was his idea. Forbiblical context, he sought helpfrom his brother, Craig Wansink, professor of religious studies atVirginia Wesleyan College in Nor-folk, Va., and an ordained Presby-terian minister.

MERCED, Calif. – The mysterious 4-year-old crisis of disappearing honeybees is deepening. A quickfederal survey indicates a heavy bee die-off this winter, while a new study shows honeybees’ pollen andhives laden with pesticides. Two federal agencies along with regulators in California and Canada are scram-bling to figure out what is behind this relatively recent threat, ordering new research on pesticides used infields and orchards. Federal courts are even weighing in this month, ruling that the U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency overlooked a requirement when allowing a pesticide on the market.

on the USDA snapshot survey. Bee-keeper Zac Browning shipped hishives from Idaho to California to pol-linate the blossoming almond groves. He got a shock when he checked onthem, finding hundreds of the hivesempty, abandoned by the worker bees. The losses were extreme, three timeshigher than the previous year.

“It wasn’t one load or two loads, but every load we were pulling outthat was dead. It got extremely de-pressing to see a third of my livestockgone,” Browning said, standing nextto stacks of dead bee colonies in aclearing near Merced, at the centerof California’s fertile San JoaquinValley. Among all the stresses to beehealth, it’s the pesticides that are at-tracting scrutiny now. A study pub-lished Friday in the scientific journalPLOS (Public Library of Science)One found about three out of fivepollen and wax samples from 23states had at least one systemic pesti-cide — a chemical designed to spreadthroughout all parts of a plant.

EPA officials said they are awareof problems involving pesticides andbees and the agency is “very seriouslyconcerned.” The pesticides are not arisk to honey sold to consumers, fed-eral officials say. And the pollen thatpeople eat is probably safe because itis usually from remote areas wherepesticides are not used, Pettis said. But the PLOS study found 121 dif-ferent types of pesticides within 887wax, pollen, bee and hive samples.“The pollen is not in good shape,” saidChris Mullin of Penn State Univer-sity, lead author.

None of the chemicals themselveswere at high enough levels to kill bees,

he said, but it was the combination andvariety of them that is worrisome.University of Illinois entomologistMay Berenbaum called the results“kind of alarming.” Despite EPA as-surances, environmental groups don’tthink the EPA is doing enough on pes-ticides. Bayer Crop Science startedpetitioning the agency to approve anew pesticide for sale in 2006. Afterreviewing the company’s studies of itseffects on bees, the EPA gave Bayerconditional approval to sell the prod-uct two years later, but said it had tocarry a label warning that it was “po-tentially toxic to honey bee larvaethrough residues in pollen and nectar.”

The Natural Resources DefenseCouncil sued, saying the agencyfailed to give the public timely no-tice for the new pesticide application. In December, a federal judge in NewYork agreed, banning the pesticide’ssale and earlier this month, two morejudges upheld the ruling. “This courtdecision is obviously very painful forus right now, and for growers whodon’t have access to that product,”said Jack Boyne, an entomologist andspokesman for Bayer Crop Science.“This product quite frankly is notharmful to honeybees.”

Boyne said the pesticide was soldfor only about a year and most saleswere in California, Arizona andFlorida. The product is intended to dis-rupt the mating patterns of insects thatthreaten citrus, lettuce and grapes, hesaid. Berenbaum’s research showspesticides are not the only problem. She said multiple viruses also are at-tacking the bees, making it tough topropose a single solution. “Things arestill heading downhill,” she said.

foods besides bread and wine.“There’s nothing else mentioned. They don’t say there’s a fruit cupor carrot cake,” though other foodssuch as fish, eel, lamb and evenpork have appeared in paintingsthrough the years, Brian Wansinksaid. For the study, he used paint-ings featured in the book “LastSupper,” published in 2000 byPhaidon Press. They include per-haps the most famous portrayal ofthe meal, by Leonardo da Vinci.Computer technology allowedthem to scan, rotate and calculateimages regardless of their orienta-tion in the paintings.

Details are in the April issue ofthe International Journal of Obe-sity. The study is “not very mean-ingful science,” said Martin Binks,a behavioral health psychologistand a consultant at Duke Univer-sity Medical Center. “We have reallife examples of the increase inportion size — all you have to dois look at what’s being sold at fast-food restaurants.” A more contem-porary test would be to analyzeportion sizes in Super Bowl com-mercials, he suggested. “Thatwould be a much more meaning-ful snapshot of how this society’srelationship to food has changed,”Binks said.

That part is tough. TheNations Cup idea could be good. But you haveto try, like the (ill-fated ATP) round-robin ex-periment. It’s tough to say without trying.”

The two-time Davis Cup finalist said thathis comeback from hip surgery last May inBarcelona will hopefully begin in Miami, withhundreds of his countrymen in attendance.“This is maybe the start of another career forme,” Nalbandian said. “When you are awayfrom the game, you miss the competition. Chelsea’s Italian Manager CarloAncelotti, seen here on March 15, hasset his side a target of 86 points to winthe English Premier League title thisseason.

Ancelotti sets Chelseatitle points target

point behind leaders and reigning championsManchester United with seven league games ofthe season to play.

Chelsea, however, will first be looking tobounce back quickly from the disappointment ofdropping two points in a 1-1 draw away toBlackburn Rovers last weekend when they takethe field at Fratton Park on Wednesday. “I likestatistics and I think that, in the past, with 86 pointsevery team has won the title,” Ancelotti said onTuesday. “I think that we need to get 86 points towin. We have less opportunity to win after lastweek because we lost two points at Blackburn, but we can have a chance again to win this titleand we will do everything we can to do so. It’svery important for us,” the Italian added.

“Now I want to believe we can win the cham-pionship and I want to stay focused on my joband give my players knowledge to win their nextgames. I always said that I want to give respect tomy players and I want to have respect. I think thisis the right behaviour and I think that, this season, everything is right with the players. I am happywith my players’ attitude. We are disappointedabout the last matches. We are out of the Champi-ons League and lost our position at the top of thetable, but everyone has kept putting in the rightbehaviour. The players, the club, we want to staytogether at this difficult moment. This is the bestthing to do at this particular moment.”

Chelsea’s last 16 exit from the ChampionsLeague at the hands of Inter Milan led to specula-tion Ancelotti would have to win a trophy thisseason or face being sacked by RomanAbramovich, the Blues Russian billionaire owner. But Ancelotti insisted: “My future is definitely atChelsea next season “I can confirm that. I havetwo more years of contract and I have no prob-lem confirming this.”

There were claims earlier this month thatthe Fiorentina Coach had already accepted anoffer to move to Turin, although they were laterdenied. However, the speculation refuses togo away and the Turin media believe Juventusare shaping their rebuilding process aroundPrandelli. That means keeping Felipe Melo, the Brazilian midfielder who has flopped thisseason, but was effectively signed off the backof a very good year under Prandelli atFiorentina.

It also implies that Juventus will sign play-ers Prandelli trusts like Gilardino and Vargas, although the club’s directors are also said to becertain of making an approach for Sampdoriastriker Giampaolo Pazzini this summer.

Although the eventual outing of the truth meant Hamilton was strippedof the top three finish, and at the centre of a controversy that nearly causedhim to quit the sport, the 2008 world champion reckons that some gooddid come out of the events. “I’ve always had great experiences here and Idon’t look at last year’s experience as a bad one,” said Hamilton, speakingduring a promotional event for Vodafone in Sydney on Wednesday. “I lookat it as a stepping stone in my life and something I learned a whole lotfrom. Every time I’ve come here, my first year in Melbourne I got a firstpodium position in my first grand prix. In 2008 I came here and I won.Last year, don’t forget I had a great race. I came from dead last on the gridup into fourth place. So it was still a good experience.”

“2009 was a tough year altogether. I learned a lot throughout aboutteam building and lifting up the team. The team does so much, but at theend of the day I’m the one who has to jump in and get the results for theteam.” Hamilton insists that he does not want to waste time re-analysingthe events of last year, with his focus instead being on securing McLaren’sfirst win of the season. “Being a racer you’re always looking forward,” hesaid. “When you’re in a race car travelling at 200mph you have to look far,far forward. And I approach my life day by day. We are in the fast lane. Itgoes by fast and you have to be ready for what is coming up. Not what hashappened in the past.”

Hamilton is bullish that McLaren can improve on its third placed finishfrom the season opener in Bahrain, with the Albert Park set to play to theMP4-25’s strengths better than Bahrain did. “Sometimes your car suits itbetter than others - this circuit should work to the strengths of our car,” headded. “We feel stronger coming in to this race and hopefully we can getmore points - for myself and Jenson. We do have a chance of winning thisweekend. And hopefully we’ll be able to get that edge. Confidence is some-thing you build on. I don’t want to come here and say ‘yeah we’re going towin’. I feel confident I have a great strong team behind me and Jensongoes well here in Australia. So I’m confident we can go better.”

FERNANDO Alonso believesFerrari’s success in the BahrainGrand Prix means nothing for thisweekend’s event in Australia, as hepredicts a tight four-way teamtussle for the victory. The Spaniardkicked off his Ferrari career in per-fect style with a triumph in the sea-son opener, but he reckons that ri-vals Red Bull, McLaren andMercedes will all be vying it out atthe front of the grid in Melbourne.

Writing on his official blog,Alonso said: “The one-two winat Sakhir gave us confidence andwas a great result for the hardwork during the winter on thetrack and at the works, but wecan’t take anything for granted.“We have to stay with our feet onthe ground, keeping calm andstaying concentrated: inMelbourne we’re starting fromsquare one. Nothing has changedfor me: there are four teams andeight drivers who can fight forvictory and we have to give it ourall to stay ahead of everybodyelse.”

Alonso has also added cau-tion to the outspoken remarksabout the state of F1 following thefar from enthralling race inBahrain. He has joined other lead-ing figures in stating that the sportneeds to think carefully beforereacting. “I think that many of ushave given some hot-headed com-ments immediately after the racein Bahrain,” he said. “It’s true thatthe race at Sakhir wasn’t espe-cially spectacular - although for
