1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum is located in Melaka and it declared as a

World UNESCO Heritage Site. The house is a combination of three terrace lots that were

acquired by the Chan family in year 1861. Before the house is opened as museum, there are

four generations lived in the house in March 1985. The name of the museum is derived from

the term Baba, an honorific manner of addressing a Straits-born gentleman and Nyonya

which addresses a Straits-born lady.

A long before, house No. 48 & 50 was used as the main homestead, while house No.

52 was the servant quarters. The house is divided into three sections basically which were

Reception Hall (Thia Besar), Kitchen (Dapur) and Ancestral Hall (Thia Abu). The house was

unique due to the interior design of the house gives many clues to Dutch, Portuguese,

Malay, and Colonial influences.

Peranakan Baba Nyonya identity began to form when Chinese traders intermarried

with local women (Indonesia, Malays, and Siamese) and adopted South East Asian social

practices and the local language. Chan Cheng Siew J.P (Justice of the Peace) was a second

generation Straits-born Chinese and the first hybrid generation. He took over his father’s

business and began his career as a planter and was commonly known as Towkay Cermin

Mata (Boss with Glasses) in estate. Cheng Siew died in 1919, leaving his wife Chee Gee

Geok Neo with three concubines and his only son Chan Seng Kee, who became trustee to

his estate. Chan Seng Kee was the third generation and the second hybrid generation in this

family.

Today the museum is still managed by the family generations. The forth son of Chan

Seng Kee was the founder to preserve the house becoming a museum. Their vision is to

revive Malaysia’s Peranakan identity and heritage to the public by preserving the house for

visitors to honour the Peranakan spirit and keeping it alive for many generations to come.

2.0 SUB ATTRACTION NEAR THE BABA AND NYONYA HERITAGE MUSEUM,

MALACCA

Besides The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, there are many other tourist

attractions along Malacca. Below are several interesting tourist attractions nearby the

museum that tourist can walk within 15 minutes from the museum.

2.1 Jonker Walk

Jalan Hang Jebat, formerly known as Jonker Street, is

known worldwide among serious antique collectors as one

of the best places to hunt and bargain for antiques. Many

authentic artefacts and relics, some dating as far back as

300 years with its history can be found here.

Recently, a new wave of cafes and craft shops has started

to grow on this street, due to the demand of the visitors

and lending it a cultured air of old-meets-new.

2.2 Stadthuys

The building was built in 1650 as the official residence of

the Dutch Governor and his officers. The Stadthuys is a

fine outstanding example of Dutch architecture of that

period. It is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the

East. This large impressive building now houses the

History Museum and Ethnography Museum.

On the roadside, there are many colourful and attractive

Malacca traditional trishaw with some modern modification

towards the market views. Visitors can experience riding

around Stadthuys with interesting commentary from the

trishaw cycler.

2.3 Melaka River Cruise

The river was the main artery of trade for Melaka in its

prime when it was busy with traders from all around the

world. Some buildings from that era still stand by the river,

which is also lined by old villages, and modern day

buildings.

The 45-minute cruise is accompanied by an entertaining

and informative commentary for just RM14. Visitors can get

lesson about the riverside history in interesting ways.

2.4 St. Paul's Hill (A'Famosa)

The Portuguese colonised Melaka from 1511 to 1641. The

first thing they did was build a fort commanding view of the

coastline, calling it A'Famosa.

Within the fort walls were housing and food stores, a

castle, a meeting room for the Portuguese Council and five

churches. A seven-month attack by the Dutch destroyed

the entire fortress, leaving only the entrance façade and

the structure of a church at the top of the hill.

Visitors can almost imagine the glories and distress of the

besieged lives the Portuguese. That would have led right

here all those years ago. By a stroll up St. Paul's Hill on a

tepid late afternoon and wander among the splendid trees

and historical remains.

3.0 STATISTIC OF TOURIST ARRIVAL

According to the linear chat for 2 years, we can see on year 2012 the total tourist arrivals

were 56,862. This is because there were many programs had been launched at Malacca

town centre. For example, concert event (Jom Heboh), cultural festival (Visit Malacca Year)

and campaign (Kempen Zon Bersih Melaka). With the external element of factor, most

visitors would like to visit attraction places nearby town centre including The Baba and

Nyonya Heritage Museum. Within 15 minutes walked from A’Famosa fortress (the icon of

Malacca), visitors would like to come and visit to The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum as

their day tour. With the government supported on promotion activities, more tourist get notice

about the museum and decided to take a look of the museum for real.

For the year 2013, the total number of visitors that visit to The Baba and Nyonya

Heritage Museum is higher than year 2012 which is 70,705 visitors. In contrast, the

difference total number of visitors between these two years is 13,843 visitors. This is

because the promotional activities that had been held on The Baba and Nyonya Heritage

Museum were increased because of the preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2014.

Furthermore, Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Malaysia was aimed that tourism destination

in Malaysia should increase the number of visitors each year.

We got some information from the tour guide named Mr. Kamal, the visitors came to visit

The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum were from domestic and international tourists. But,

international tourist received higher number of percentage of tourist arrival. Moreover, most

of the international tourists were come from Singapore, Japan, Thailand and other Asian

country. Our tour guide said that, the museum administrator estimate the total tourist number

will be increasing each year. In that case, the museum will receive more visitors for the next

years come.

4.0 LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT

Based on two years of statistic tourist arrival at the museum we observe and found

that the museum faced stagnation stage as referred on destination lifecycle model.

Figure 6: The destination lifecycle model (Butler, 1980). Source: Butler, 1980 in lecture hand

out of HTT557.

Source:Butler,1980inhttp://www.unesconigeriatve.org/teaching%20materials/ltm/leisure%20

ples/week7.html.

The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum faced the stagnation stage of destination

life cycle. Stagnation is the fifth stages in which place visitor numbers and tourism growth

stagnate due to the deterioration of the product. At stagnant stage, the environment capacity

reaches the limits that can causes many economic, social and environment problems.

The museum can’t develop more due to preserve the heritage and historical values

of the museum. More people come to visit, more rubbish they could produce and destroy the

values of the historical site. After the museum entitle as one of the UNESCO site, the

museum start to maintaining, sustaining, preserving, and conserving the heritage and

historical value of the museum with the supported fund from this worldwide association.

UNESCO strictly commanded to preserve the heritage site and limit the carrying capacity of

visitors to visit the museum as the policy.

Page 7: BABA NYONYA REPORT

7

In addition, the destination is perceived to be “out of fashion”. This because, many

people today do not tend to visit at historical places due to the lack of appreciation on

historical values of the site. Based on two years of tourist arrival statistic at the museum, the

number of visitors did not show huge growth of tourist arrival each year. The difference total

number of visitors between these two years is small.

6.0 IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL

A) ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Positive Impact

1) Infrastructure improvements

As the tourism activity is increasing at the Baba and Nyonya Museum, there are more

infrastructures and facilities are being built and under improvement from year to year.

These steps are crucial in order to maintain the total number of visitors that will come and

visit the museum. When the tourists feel satisfied with the facilities provided, they will

bring the word of mouth to spread about it to the other people. Proper infrastructures are

provided such as road system, sewage system, water system, disposal system, drainage

system and others will make the tourists feel convenience when they are visiting this

place. The local government also has provided an accessible road system to the Baba

and Nyonya Museum so the tourists can access the place easily.

2) Increasing the environmental awareness

The existence of the tourism industry makes the tourists realize about the importance of

conserving the environment conditions in order to maintain the authenticity of the

destination. Furthermore, the local authorities also need to play their roles by running a

campaign such as a day without plastic bag or “green environment” campaign. This

campaign joined by all tourism industry including the staff at Baba and Nyonya Museum.

We have seen it through the cleanliness at the museum and the surrounding area.

3) Conservation of the historic sites and architectural characteristics

The conservation of the historic sites and the architectural buildings can be seen from

the outside and the inside of the Baba and Nyonya Museum. Malacca is a listed

destination under UNESCO, so the local authority takes initiative to conserve and

preserve the historic sites, and to develop the surrounding areas without affecting the

authenticity of the building. The Baba and Nyonya Museum are also under the

conservation to maintain the originality of the place and the culture itself.

Page 8: BABA NYONYA REPORT

8

Negative Impact

1) Noise pollution

Noise pollution is happen when many vehicles use the small

road in front of the Baba and Nyonya Museum building. The

small road is also being access by various transportations

such as cars, buses and taxis, so the safety of the tourists

who are walking at the destination need to be considered.

The road is very congested because people parked their

vehicles in front of the building, and the pedestrians are using

the same roads, too. Besides that, congestion can cause

noise pollution with the loud noise from the vehicles and the

people

itself. Noise pollution can lead to psychological stress.

2) Air pollution

The visitors bring their own vehicles to visiting the museum and other nearest locations.

The local people are also using their own vehicles, either to access the place or to

access the roads nearby the place. It can cause air pollution to the environment. This is

happen from the excessive use of internal combustion of vehicles used by people at this

site. Air pollution is a form of dust in the air that can give impact on local resident and

tourist health on the destination.

3) Land use problem

If the area is not well developed according to the proper planning systems, the tourism

industry will face the land use problem. Tourist facilities may take place at the site, as

well as the infrastructure at the surrounding area. Through this development, it can lead

to traffic condition of using the land at the site area of Baba and Nyonya Museum. This

building is located near with the other attraction sites. It indirectly will attract the hotelier

to build their hotel, inns and other types of accommodations near this area. The

competition of new building constructions such as accommodation and food and

beverages outlets near the location can actually disturbs the condition of the land in

Malacca.

B) ECONOMIC IMPACT

Positive Impact

1) Economic benefits to local economies

Tourism industry creates a lot of job opportunities to the local peoples such as taxi

drivers, site guides, local traders, and so on. Mostly, the workers who work at the Baba

and Nyonya Museum area are the local people, including the staffs in the museum itself.

Indirectly, the local communities can increase their income as well as their living

standard increases when there are a lot of job opportunities offered in this industry.

2) Contribution to government revenues

This industry of tourism at Museum Baba and Nyonya generate revenues to the

government by paying certain taxes, and the tourists also need to pay some taxes when

they travel to Malacca as a tourist. Government usually imposed taxes toward tourist

and local tourism industry in order to increase government revenue. This is crucial for

the government because they will use the money to develop new infrastructures and

facilities at the tourism sites, as well as other development that government should give

at the different area.

Negative Impact

1) Increase in price

The price for the entrance ticket at the museum and the cost of purchasing food at this

museum has increased. This can be included in the negative impact of the tourism

industry because many tourists come to visit the museum lately. The staffs of the

museum put the higher price of the ticket and food at the restaurant as the staffs see the

increasing number of visitors to their place. The local communities suffered from this

change of price because mostly the local people do not have higher amount of income.

At year of 2008, the ticket price to enter the museum is RM 8 for local but increased to

RM 14 nowadays.

2) Infrastructure cost

The maintenance and development of new infrastructures are very costly and become a

financial burden to the staffs at the Baba and Nyonya Museum. This is happen when the

staffs of the museum want to maintain the condition of the building and adding some

facilities inside the building to preserve the building. To improve and preserve the

Page 10: BABA NYONYA REPORT

10

building, the staffs put CCTV, electricity for lamp, fan and air-conditioner, water system

for toilet, and the proper protection plan are also included.

C) SOCIAL IMPACT

Positive Impact

1) Cross cultural exchange

The tourists that come to the destination bring along

their own culture into our country, so the local

people can learn more about the tourist cultures. In

contrast, the tourists also can learn about the

uniqueness of Malacca, about the local cultures

surrounding the museum area by meeting the

local people when they are visiting the destination.

Besides that, the local people can learn how to

speak in the different languages. For example, the tour guides inside the museum can

speak in different languages in order to convey message to the foreign tourists easily.

2) Conservation of cultural heritage

The conservation of cultural heritage sites and buildings in Malacca is happen because

of the existence of the tourism industry. Indirectly, the local cultural heritages that pass

from one generation to another generation can be learn, see and experience by the new

future generation. This conservation is also being made to attract visitors to comes to

this destination. The conservation of the cultural heritage happen at the Baba and

Nyonya Museum, and the tourists can see the originality of the building, equipments,

utensils at the kitchen, Baba and Nyonya’s costume inside the museum. Thus, the

visitors can feel the nostalgic values inside this old museum.

3) Renewal Cultural

At Baba and Nyonya museum, the staffs are also the descendants of Baba and Nyonya.

It shows that they are honestly carrying their responsibility to protect and take care of

their own culture. Since they are already preserving and conserving the culture full-

heartedly, the culture value can be maintained and the next future generation.

Figure 17: Wedding Chamber

Page 11: BABA NYONYA REPORT

11

Negative Impact

1) Overcrowding and loss of amenities for the resident

The Baba and Nyonya Museum attract a lot of tourists around the world to visit this

place. At the same time, the tourists also will use the facilities inside the museum and

the surrounding area. This condition can make the place become overcrowding and

the resident may compete with the tourists on using of amenities in this area.

2) Social problem

Some the negative image portrayed by the tourists can give bad impact to the local

people. For example, when the tourists with social problem visit this museum, their

misbehaving and bad attitudes can indirectly give bad impact to the local

communities. This is because the local people will not convenient, and the

youngsters tend to follow the bad attitudes.

3) Cultural impact

Tourist arrivals bring their own culture and lifestyle into our country, and culture clash

towards local people can be happen because of the differences in culture and

religious belief between the tourists and the local people itself. When the local people

are accepting foreign cultures as part of their life, the authenticity of the culture in

Malacca is going to be lost. Foreign cultures can gives positive impacts towards the

local people, but it still can cause the local identity of Baba and Nyonya’s culture and

the local communities’ cultures slowly fade.

Page 12: BABA NYONYA REPORT

12

7.0 ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS

7.1 Analysis

Based from the research we have conducted at Baba Nyonya Museum Malacca, we have

found the advantages and disadvantages impact towards few aspects such as economic,

social and environment.

In economic aspects, there is a potential to increase in income and living standards of the

local people by creating new job opportunities. In addition, it can increase the government

revenue by imposing certain taxes to the tourists and local tourism industries simultaneously

develop new infrastructure and facility around the urban areas. In contrast, the increase in

pricing will suffered the local community at the surrounding areas.

Besides that, Baba Nyonya Museum also brings impact toward the social aspect. Local

community will experience cross cultural exchange by learning new cultures from outside

and learn different languages to ease in conveying the message with the tourists from

outside the country. Tourists also can learn about the uniqueness of Malacca in terms of its

histories and cultural heritage. Moreover, by the existence of tourism industry, it is one of the

ways to conserve of cultural heritage for new future generations, and to attract visitors to see

the nostalgic value and the originality of the museum. However, the impacts on social aspect

are occurred when it is overcrowding and fewer amenities for the resident. When there are

too many tourists come over, the places will get congested and contributes to the social

impact and social problem to the local people such as crime activities, cultural clash toward.

By that, the local people must be aware of these negative impacts that obviously different

from the local culture.

The environment is affected the most in this aspect. This heritage site is being listed as

UNESCO World Heritage Site, so there should be an improvement on the infrastructure and

facilities on the building and the surrounding attraction places to maintain the number of

visitors that come over. Plus, by increasing environment awareness among the visitors will

make them realize the importance of conserving the environment. This can be done by

running a “green environment” campaign to maintain the authority of the destination. After

being listed under the UNESCO, Baba and Nyonya Museum is more concentrating on

conservation of the Historic Site and architectural characteristics to maintain its originality

aspects. Furthermore, noise pollution, air pollution and land use pollution has caused

problems and negative effects on the heritage places and other nearby attraction places like

A’ Famosa Fort, Istana Melaka, Muzium Senibina and others. Congestion problem because

Page 13: BABA NYONYA REPORT

13

of too many vehicles using the small roads in front of the building can effect in hearing

damages and psychological stress. Lastly, many competitions on accommodations,

restaurants and other new infrastructure will disturb the condition of the land in Malacca.

As a result, after combining all facts about Baba Nyonya Museum, we can conclude that

there are more positive impacts on Baba and Nyonya Museum, but it must be guided well

and always be observed by the responsible authority and the government also must actively

conserve the heritage sites in Malacca. By that, the new future generations see, learn and

experience the historical and cultural heritage of Baba Nyonya or Peranakan in Malacca.

7.2 Synthesis

The existence of this museum has contributed in positive aspects in the tourism industry in

Malacca. It can give the local people and tourist about new knowledge about one of the

races that exist in Malaysia. The museum maintained the nostalgic value and originality so

that the visitors can learn, see and experience about Baba and Nyonya’s culture and

lifestyle. With the way they preserve special design of museum furniture, Baba Nyonya

Museum can operated in long time be a very attractive places.

The developers should concern about building new infrastructure or facilities around Baba

and Nyonya Museum by not only focusing in making profits and ignoring the negative

impacts. If they still insist, the locals will faces the negative impacts such as noise pollution,

air pollution and land use pollution.

Government and the laws should use their authority to create guidelines and rules, and to

take serious actions on misuse or over react on developments in around Baba and Nyonya

Museum without concerning many aspects such social problem, cultural impacts and

overcrowding and loss of amenities for the residents. We believe from the overall analysis

that tourism program must proceed on this places because of many the positive impact and

controlled negative impact surrounding the places.

.

Page 14: BABA NYONYA REPORT

14

8.0 RECOMMENDATION

Based on the impact that are listed above, some suggestions and recommendations can

be taken into consideration to improve the services at Baba and Nyonya Museum so

that this place will remain as one of the most popular attraction places in Melaka.

For the environmental factor, the steps that can be taken to minimize the noise pollution

at the museum and the surrounding area is by making the roads that lead to the

museum and the surrounding area specified only to the pedestrians, motorcycles and

bicycles to reduce the impact of the noise that might disturb the visitors at the museum.

The safeties of the people that used the road are also should be considered. Besides,

the roads are too small for cars and buses, and it can contribute to road congestions. To

control the air pollution that polluting the environment around the museum, the parking

lot should be provided at a strategic distance with the museum to make sure that the

congestions of the vehicles can be reduced at that museum area for the convenience of

the visitors to visit the museum. While for the land use problem, there are too many

facilities such as accommodations and restaurants built near the museum. This can be

settled by charging a compatible price for a rent or purchasing the land of the building

since the selected area are strategically located to attract the tourists to visit. Besides

that, to avoid the congestions of the infrastructure built near the museum, responsible

authorities should make a strict enforcement for not parking in front of the museum and

other attractions that can make the roads to become narrow and difficult to be used by

people.

In social aspect, to overcome the exceeded capacity of the visitors in the museum, the

management should limit the number of people in a group to prevent lost of interest

since they can’t hear the information clearly. Besides that, they should add up the

number of facilities inside the museums such as the toilet and bench or chairs for

visitors to rest or take turn to join the next tour. To avoid social crime that might happen

in the museum, the management of the museum should put a list of rules and

regulations such to avoid crime. The staffs in the museum also should remind the

visitors about their safety and their belongings while they are in the museum. To

maintain the Baba and Nyonya’s culture, the management of the museum can make it

compulsory for the staffs to wear Baba and Nyonya traditional clothes to show their

culture. Other than that, the management also can invite the generations of the Baba

and Nyonya descendants to guide a tour in the museum itself to give real experience to

the visitors on their lifestyle and practices. Then, the management also can celebrate

Page 15: BABA NYONYA REPORT

15

the special days at the museum where they can show the visitors how the ceremony

such as Baba and Nyonya wedding celebration is celebrated so that the visitors can get

to know and learn more about the culture.

In economy impact, the problem on higher charges to local people can be faced through

a small step by the management which is to reduce the price of the tickets fee for the

local people. They can cover the cost by providing equipments like audio devices that

can explain the information in various languages. It can be rent along with the provided

guiding book or pamphlets, especially for the visitors who want to learn about Baba and

Nyonya without joining the tour. Besides that, to reduce the higher infrastructure cost of

the museums, the management of the museum can minimize the import items used in

the building to cut the cost of the maintenance and infrastructure of the building. They

can use local items or local expertise to enhance the quality of the museum.

In conclusion, the recommendations above can be used to improve the services in the

museum in order to maintain the place as one of the famous attraction place in Melaka

for its culture and history.

9.0 FUTURE PLAN AND DEVELOPMENT

Developing exhibitions and activities to add value to the preservation of heritage in Malacca

is one of the missions of the Baba and Nyonya Museum. By that, they are aiming on making

Malacca tourism to be more colorful and more cultural atmosphere, to promote Nyonya

culture as attraction for tourists to come to Malacca, and making people have in-depth

understanding of the history and development of Malacca and Nyonya culture.

This program is one of the ways to attract people, especially the young generations to come

and see about the uniqueness and specialties of Baba Nyonya’s culture in Malacca. Through

this program, people can learn, see and experience more about this culture. Besides that,

continuous preservation and conservation of the Baba and Nyonya Museum itself are one of

their ways to protect the value of the culture so that it would not vanish in time.

17

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we hope that the Baba and Nyonya Museum can be continuously well

protected, preserved and conserved for the next future generations. We also hope that

Malaysian people will be more interested and appreciated about this special and unique

culture of Baba and Nyonya.

We choose the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum as the main topic for this subject

group assignment because we want to take a chance to learn more about our culture and

history. Every culture has its own uniqueness and specialties. We realize that it is important

to preserve our cultural heritage to show our own national identity so that we can

differentiate between our own cultures with the other culture in another country.

By the research that we have conducted, we found out that there are many benefits

that our country can get through tourism industry. It will help in historic preservation to

maintain its value so that the new generations can experience and appreciate more about

our history. It is also can attract tourists, either within the country or outside the country, to

visit and learn more about our history and culture, and at the same time generating income

Lastly, we hope that the responsible authorities and organizations can make sure

each of the heritage and historical places in Malaysia are fully conserved and preserved

systematically. By that, the new future generations can have a chance to learn, to see and

experience about our own history and cultural heritage.
