1. Water flows in a 50 mm pipe, 100 m long, whose roughness k isequal to 0.013 mm. If the pressuredrop across this length of pipe is not to exceed 50 kN/m
2, what is the maximum allowable water
velocity? The density and viscosity of water may be taken as 1000 kg/m 3and 1.0 mN s/m2respectively.
Answer:
2. Estimate the steady mean velocity for a commercial steel pipe with the following characteristics:
length L = 30.48 m
inside diameter Di= 0.0526 m
wall roughness k = 0.000045 m
frictional pressure drop P = 15720 N/m2
liquid viscosity = 0.01N s/m2.
liquid density = 1200 kg/m

4. The figure below shows a siphon discharging oil (specific gravity = 0.84) from a reservoir into open air. If
the velocity of flow in the pipe is v, the friction losses from points 1 to 2 is 2.0 v2/(2g), from points 2 to 3 is 3.0
v2/(2g), determine the volume rate in the siphon pipe and absolute pressure at point 2. Assume atmospheric
pressure is 14.7 psia.
