patient’s problem. Because ….

Endung : But I think there are many alternative treatments available, such as palliative

care and hospices. We do not have to kill the patient to kill the symptoms. There is no

‘right’ to be killed and there are real dangers of ‘slippery slopes’.

Berlin : The humanitarians and the religious believe that mercy killing or euthanasia is

morally wrong. They believe that only God has the right to end life because only God

was responsible for the same. Whatever the type of Euthanasia still not allowed. They

also argue that euthanasia is as good as homicide or murder that simply cannot be

justified under the banner of namesake arguments. There really is no mercy in killing!

Anggih : We also have to see from the religion point of view. Because the majority of

people in this world have a religion. For example in Indonesia that majority of the

population are Moslem. Islam recognizes the right to life and death, but the right is a gift

of God to human. As in Al Quran ( Surah 22 : Subsection 66 and Surah 2 : Subsection

243) which reads : Only God can determine when a person was born and when he

died.

Berlin : To kill oneself, or to get someone else to do it for us, is to deny God, and to

deny God's rights over our lives and his right to choose the length of our lives and the

way our lives end.

Putri : But in Japan, where the dominant religion is Shinto, 69 % of religious

organization agree with the act of voluntary passive euthanasia.

Endung : Do you know that not only Moslem but a lot of the other religion also not

agree with Euthanasia. There are Christian, Catholicism, Hinduism and Buddhism.

Catholic teaching condemns euthanasia as a " crime against life" and a " crime against

principles of Catholic ethics, Including the sanctity of human life , the dignity of the

human person, concomitant human rights , due proportionality in casuistic remedies,

the unavoidability of death , and the importance of charity

Berlin : but people in every country ruled by the government and a lot of country not

allowed euthanasia. Such as Australia, Canada, Mexico, Phillippines and also

Indonesia. Under Indonesian law the act of euthanasia is something that is against the

law , it can be seen in the legislation that exists is in the Book of Section 344 of the

Penal Code Act which states that " Any person who removes the life of another person

at the request of the person himself , he mention the real and earnest , was sentenced

to prison for ever 12 years " . Also the case appears on the arrangement of articles

338 , 340 , 345 , and 359 of the Criminal Code which can also be said to satisfy the

elements of the offense in the act of euthanasia . Thus, the formal laws of our country

does not allow euthanasia action by anyone.

Moeloek in a statement published by Tempo magazine Tuesday, October 5, 2004 [ 12 ]

states that : Euthanasia or " murder without suffering " until now there has been

acceptable in the values and norms that develop in Indonesian society . " Euthanasia

until now not in accordance with the ethics espoused by the nation and violate

applicable positive law is the Criminal Code .
