Definisi

• Menyunting adalah suatu kegiatan pemeriksaan kembali suatu tulisan atau naskah sebelum tulisan tersebut dipublikasikan

• Menyunting adalah kegiatan menyiapkan naskah, teks atau karangan siap cetak atau siap terbit dengan memerhatikan sistematika penyajian, isi dan bahasa. Menyunting disebut juga mengedit (editing process).

Tujuan Penyuntingan Teks

• Menyunting bertujuan untuk mengurangi kesalahan kesalahan yang dilakukan penulis dalam membuat tulisan sehingga kualitas tulisan menjadi lebih baik dari sebelumnya.

• Tulisan yang baik dapat menambah daya pikat dan lamanya pembaca meresapi kata demi kata yang tersaji dalam teks/karangan.

Teknik Penyuntingan Teks/Karangan.

• Membaca ulang konsep dasar teks/ karangan/naskah yang telah selesai dengan penuh ketelitian dan kehati-hatian.

• Mengidentifikasi dan memperhatikan kesalahan-kesalahan yang terjadi dalam penggunaan bahasa meliputi :

• Memperhatikan tata letak (layout) tulisan atau naskah meliputi penempatan judul utama, judul tambahan, sub judul, urutan penomoran.

• Memperhatikan indentasi, spasi, dan tingkat kerapatan antar kata, kalimat dan paragraf.

• Memperbaiki kesalahan kesalahan teks atau karangan yang telah diidentifikasi sebagaimana tersebut di atas dengan cara melakukan penghapusan, penggantian atau penambahan unsur-unsur bahasa dalam tulisan.

• Sebagai tahap finalisasi, seorang penyunting sebaiknya membaca ulang teks/karangan yang telah disunting sebelum dipublish atau dicetak.

• Kesalahan penggunaan kata baku dan tidak baku.

• Kesalahaan ejaan.

• Kesalahan tanda baca.

• Kesalahan diksi.

• Kesalahan struktur

• Kesalahan konjungsi

My teenage children would rather not to go out at all than go out wearing the “wrong” clothes or footwear. Even in cold weather they prefer to go out without to wearing a jacket if it means avoiding of wearing something which does not make them look cool. While the problem is the clothes that teenagers think are cool tend to be more expensive than those which are not. Also , “uncool” clothes are often much more warmer than also trendy ones, but unfortunately, kids can’t stand from wearing them. Certain brand names are not as popular, for some reason, as others. Take boots, for example. I bought a pair of boots for my young son which looked like exactly the same as another more well-known make of boots. They were also cost twice as much as the ones I had chosen. He refused himself to wear the boots I had got for him.

Punctuation

• Punctuation marks are the “traffic signals” of a language. When correctly used, they guide the reader through the text and makes comprehension easier. However, when incorrectly placed, they can also change the meaning of a sentence.

Defintion

There are only two uses of the period (also known as “full stop” in British English)

1. To mark the end of a sentence expressing a statement (if you are unsure whether the words constitute a sentence, look for a verb which is an essential component of a sentence)

2. To signify an acronym [N.A.T.O. for North Atlantic Treaty Organization (although increasingly it is acceptable and even preferable not to use full stops in such cases)]

Use of the period

• In a list Oxford comma ~ the comma before “and” or “or” in a series of items. Example: Ham, eggs, and chips

• Before dialogue Example: Mark said, “Good morning!”

• Mark out additional information Example: The girl, who is wearing a pink shirt, is my sister.

• Before a conjunction (e.g. and but or for while yet) introducing an independent clause Example: The boys wanted to stay up until midnight, but they grew tired and fell asleep.

Uses of comma

• Indicates a possessive in a singular noun Example: The café’s menu But when the possessor is a regular plural, the apostrophe follows the “s.”Example: The cafés’ menus.

• With modern names ending in “s” (including biblical names and any foreign name with an unpronounced final “s”), the “s” is required after the apostrophe.

Uses of Semicolon

• Linking words such as “however,” “nevertheless,” “also,” “consequently,” and “hence” require a semicolon.

Example: He spent a lot for the campaign; however, the majority of the public saw through his pretense and did not vote for him.

• Separates statements “placed baldly in dramatic opposition”

a. Lawrence could not speak: he was drunk.

It is also used when the second statement reaffirms, explains or illustrates the first

• Separates dramatic characters forming a dialogue:

Anne: You can go there by plane, by ship, or by bus.

Diction Editing

What does “diction” mean?

Diction is a fancy way of saying “word choice” -you may have heard your literature teacher talk about this idea when analyzing a famous author’s writing style.

What is diction error?

• A diction error is an error in word choice. There are two ways you can go wrong when choosing a word. You can choose a word that doesn't mean what you think it means. Or you can choose a word or phrase that is innappropriate to the rest of the composition. Usually such words and phrases are either colloquial or nonstandard.

EXAMPLE

Mrs. Sullivan went on all period about the illusions to Victorian society in Alice in Wonderland. For nearly the entire semester, I felt so inhabited that I never so much as razed my hand in class. Since they did not have a plan for the project, they decided to refer their approval until later. Try as they might, the hikers could not find the anecdote to the snake vernom. The acid solution was so potent that we had to delude it with water before we could use it safely.
