Photo Composition Rules

In the photography there are composition rules that

must be followed:

Thirds Rule Horizon Line Rule

Look Rule

Golden Proportion Rule

Diagonal Rule

Thirds Rule

The rule of Thirds is based in the

human perception:

In the occidental culture the

human eye is drawn to a pointabout two-thirds up a page

following the reading logic in

reading a picture:

In occident the reading is madefrom left to right, from top to

bottom; this generates a Z in the

space to be seeing.

Thirds Rule

Therefore the framing of the shot should be placed according to

this rule:

Divide your frame in thirds in a horizontal and vertical way, as

shown in the sample:

In doing so, you will find the Maximum Focal Point

(MFP)

These four points in a frame are the most touchedplaces in the viewed surface, therefore placing the

main object of the photography on them, will make

the composition more attractive to the human eye.

Horizon Line Rule

The Horizon Line Rule It is derived from the thirds

rule.

The horizon has to be placed in one of the thirds inthe frame, upper or lower, in order to be attractive

to the observer

It works in both frames, landscape or portrait

Look Rule

The look rule is used when people or animals, or

both; appear in a picture

The position of the main subjects should be in thethird and it should be looking at the interior of the

frame.

The photographer should give the subjects enough

space to develop the look

This rule has its origin in Greece, but it has being

studied all over the world.

This proportion was called the golden ratio, golden

proportion or golden number and has being used for

2600 years.

It has being found in the relation of all forms in the

nature, from molecules to the human It has its most impact in the human perception

something designed or structured using this proportion

will be more agreeable to human sight
