IN the early morning of August 17th 2012, representatives from the Bali Dynasty Resort attended the flag raising ceremony in the remote mountain hamlet of Desa Ban in North Eastern Bali where the villages converged in the dry river bed to celebrate Indonesia’s 67th Indepen-dence Day organized by the East Bali Poverty Project.

The Bali Dynasty Resort, as in previous years, sponsored the Hygiene kits for over 200 vil lagers which consisted of towels, soap, toothbrush and

toothpaste as well as fresh fruit to remind the villagers of the importance of good personal hygiene and healthy nutritional eating. The children of the villages prepared great performances from Balinese dances to drama and music. There were fun games organized for the kids such as krupuk eating contests and sack races making it a joyous occasion for all!

This event was also the perfect oc-casion to hand over a brand new camera to I. Wayan Lias, the young and talented artist from the village Cegi whom the Bali

Dynasty Resort has been supporting in his further education at the Fine Art Faculty in Singaraja since May 2012.

The camera was given to support a photography segment in his studies where Lias will be required to make a photo exhibi-tion. “I am very grateful, now I am able to

practise and develop my photographic skills”, Lias said. He also pointed out to the young children in the village to keep doing their best as this will bring results and a better future.

A selection of Lias’ art is being displayed in the re-sort as well as being

posted on the hotels website. The paintings are for sale and 50% of the money raised will directly go to supporting his education.

children. Since 2000, the Dynasty has raised over 2 billion Rupiah in aid making the Bali Dynasty Resort one of the leading sponsors of the East Bali Poverty Project. The dona-tions mainly come from guests as well as special events such as the twice weekly quiz nights conducted in Gracie Kelly’s each Tuesday and Thursday evening as a well as a major annual fundraiser in Perth; the Back to Bali Dynasty Party, which is held in February each year and is supported by all the resort’s major Australian travel partners and past guests. v BTNewspaper/PR

ON FRIDAY (Aug 24), a press confer-ence was held at Grand Istana Rama on Jalan Pantai Kuta by the Magic Wave Surf Community Newspaper in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the kids surfing contest entitled Magic Wave Billabong Grommet Series com-

peting for the Bali Governor Cup 2012 held on Sunday (Aug 26). The surfing contest was sponsored by the Governor of Bali, in this case by the Bali Government Tourism Office. The event was

guided by Piping as representative of Magic Wave (Magic Wave Surfing Series) with Magic Wave Ambassador - Ivan Sudena, 13.

Meanwhile, the category put into the competition consisted of pushing division where the participants were 3 years of

age and above. In performing their action, they were assisted by each parent and it was the most interest-ing class as involving two emotions at once (parent and child). The other categories were under 10 years and under 14 years of age.

Such an event was also filled with charity activity marked with the handover of gifts containing usable garments to children of nature. The gifts were symbolically handed over by representative of Putri Ombak, a women’s surfer community, to Kodrat as represen-

tative of the children of nature.“Implementation of the kids contest

was inspired by the lack of such kind of con-test or regeneration endeavor,” said Piping and Ivan. At the same time, the event was

HELD every six months, The Breezes Bali Resort’s odalan temple celebration was like any other: mov-ing – this one particularly fast and on four wheels. While traditions such as tari sekar jaga and the hilarious cedil joker appeased spirits both in the sekala – visible realm – and the less obvious niskala one, an offering was also made to the very visible street children of the Yayasan Kasih Peduli Anak shelter, or YPKA. Twenty-eight children, aged fifteen down to a beautiful one-year-old named Cinta, sat confidently among one hundred-odd resort staff, all clad in clean white sarong, furled udeng, and lacy kebaya. After a long afternoon of ritual, Executive Assistant Manager Ibu Dayu Basmi-ari took the spotlight of the glorious afternoon sunshine, stunning in traditional clothes, and on her cue, with accompanying flitter from the large gong group, in drove the hadiah kecil – the tiny present to the non-profit youth shelter – a maroon minivan wrapped in rib-bons and spotted with flowers.

While the twenty-eight children literally sitting in on The Breeze’s odalan – on their sandals - call the shelter home, roughly fifteen street kids are still out there, only coming to the shelter for essentials, or to learn from a volunteer guru. For complex reasons, be it debt or family relations, these fifteen kids face the heat and fumes at intersections around Bali, every day and night. In her welcoming speech to those lucky enough to attend, Ibu Dayu noted the first problem is health, and the second is transportation - as even bus fare in Bali is steep when you are a beggar. After the ribbon was cut with timely gong flare, father of property owner Pak Kadek, Bapak Ariana took the mic and the sunny spotlight.

As advice from a family of exemplary inves-tors, Bapak Ariana said he hopes The Breeze’s donations, including staff-gifted cash of about two million Rupiah every month, are made to go very far - but there is no one noting the mileage. The minivan will most likely be driven into the ground shuttling youth to-and-from YPKA’s humble Denpasar residence.

Remarkably comfortable as one of few foreigners in the temple grounds, Michael from California, spotlessly adorned in sarong with a white udeng around his shaved head, busily tended to little baby Cinta. Michael, together with his wife Mrs. Putu, began the shelter with one precious adoptee named Riski – a young boy faced with violence if he could not beg Rp. 50,000 a day. Aside from cash and car, The Breezes has been routing benevolent guests YPKA’s way; tourists who wish to achieve something more than sight-seeing are ironically treated to performances and personally meet all of the shelter’s gifted members. As a final touch, The Breezes own copywriter from Canada offered to become one of the shelter’s newest guru, offering a little something more to the undeniably good cause that is YPKA. v BTNewspaper/PR

AFTER 60 days of incubation at W Retreat & Spa Bali - Seminyak, 239 green turtle eggs have hatched and been released back into the Indian Ocean just in front of the Retreat.

In the last three months, 6 large green turtles have come to lay their eggs at Semin-yak Beach. After consulting with local wildlife groups that are in the know, they advised that the Retreat guard the eggs, do not disturb them and once hatched to release them back into the sea. As part of the ongoing green en-vironmental philosophy of W Bali, this exciting initiative goes hand in hand with protecting our flora & fauna.

W Hotels Worldwide was the first inter-

national hotel chain to promote a pet-friendly program. “Pets Are Welcome”, aka the P.A.W. program, allows certain hotels to cater to the pets needs, including treats, a custom W pet bed and pet-walking service. “Though we only allow pets in our public areas, the turtles bring a whole new meaning to pet friendly”, says Craig Seaward, General Manager of W Retreat & Spa Bali - Seminyak.

“There has been a strong concerted effort to educate the villagers to protect and con-serve these endangered animals. We wanted to do our part to shelter the turtle eggs and play a strong part to help regenerate the population in Indonesia.” v BTNewspaper/PR

also intended to establish communication among the children themselves. They hoped the event could encourage the children later on in brushing up their skills for a more pro-fessional surfing event.

With the support of the Governor Cup at this time, Piping hoped it could draw the ranks of government to enjoy the develop-ment of surfing as a very promising potential both in terms of foreign exchange earnings and participation in keeping the environ-mental sanitation. Participants of the recent contest reached 104 children from around Kuta to Seminyak Beach.

The winners of Magic Wave Billabong

Grommet Series of Governor Cup 2012 consisted of: men’s category of 14 years age group: Meg, Rio, Raju and Sunny; men’s category of 10 years age group: Dhany, Kian, Ketut Agus and Riuki and men’s pushing divi-sion: Xavier, Aryana, Leo and Arthur. Mean-while, for women’s category of 14 years age group was won by Dea, Julika, Kailani and Puanani; women’s category of 10 years age group: Tania, Maria, Grace and Alba and women’s pushing division: Bella, Lanta, Jenni and Alisa. Artistically photographed by the author and with all the research into each dance done by Dewi herself, the book covers a total of 21 dances from all parts of Bali, giving readers both insight into the myths and legends be-hind the dances and also some back-ground to the choreographers. “Each dance held a new fascination for me” said Dewi “and as I progressed from dance to dance, my ability to under-stand them increased and my creative

approach to the photography soared. It was a delight to discover and docu-ment each dance”.

“I think Balinese dance repre-sents the island, its religion, history and culture so well” said publisher Alistair Speirs and by keeping the book small, light and very affordable we hope many people will remember Bali and treasure it by taking it home with them”.

“Dances of Bali” is available at leading bookstores across the island and direct from the publisher, as well as at many top hotels. v BTNews-paper/PR

WE (my wife and me) got the opportunity to enjoy a luxury spa treatment located at Jalan Sudamala 20, Sanur. Having passed busy days in conjunction with the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan becoming one of the biggest holidays in Bali, we intended to eliminate the soreness and fatigue that started influencing our whole body. To that end, I decided to choose Men’s Signature Therapy, while my wife was try-ing to feel the sensation of Organic Sun Soother.

After enjoying the therapy for ninety min-utes, we then got refreshed. Fatigue occurring due to our bustles in conjunction with the feast disappeared. On the following day, we came back to work with a fresh body condition.

In fact, the Sudamala Spa did not only offer two kinds of therapies, but there were a variety of therapies presented in the g spa. If you have time, do not forget to visit the gallery in front of the spa. Even, some rooms are also available for you at the Sudamala Suites & Villas.

The beautifully balanced, lavishly abundant luxury of Sudamala Suites and Villas reaches an apex of quality relaxation and delight in the sweet serenity of Sudajiva Spa, offering a renowned treatment program. This uniquely enriching, rejuvenating Spa experience is per-fectly complimented by its line of internationally acclaimed skin care brand, Pevonia Botanica, which employs rich, powerful, natural, and bo-tanical ingredients derived from nature.

Suda-mala’s 34 luxurious and comfortable suites are nestled around 2 spacious inner courtyards. The 250 sqm gallery Sudakara ArtSpace brings to reality the vision behind the hotel: a place where artists, art collectors and enthusiasts as well as hotel guests, of course, can come together to create, discuss or simply appreciate art.
