Moral Reasoning Assignment Abortion

Dilemma :

Sheila is a 38 year old housewife from a village in Nias. She has 4 children. Her

husband was a fisherman who recently died in a motor cycle accident. Sheila finds out

that she is 3 months pregnant. She is very poor and is determined she does not want

another child and will seek an abortion. She comes to a local health clinic requesting

an abortion. Jessy is the clinic doctor.

If you are Jessy, (considering Sheila is your patient and you have a duty), will

you provide a safe abortion for Sheila? Provide the moral reasons for your action.

In this case, as a doctor I would approve her abortion. Why? Abortion is the cessation

of pregnancy before 20 weeks gestation that resulted in fetal death. Sheila is

a mother who is financially poor and has 4-children who are being her responsible.

The first one I would do, is I will ascertain whether the mother really want abort the

pregnancy or not. In addition, as a doctor we should appreciate the faith of

the mother. Will her religion allows for abortion or not, and whether the mother

believed that when the child is born, will it bring a bad impact for its life or not.

The reason I approve of abortion, is a mother has the right to determine what they will

do about their own bodies, and the fetus is in the body of the mother, therefore, the

mother is entitled determine whether the fetus may continue to keep growing in the

womb or not. On the other hand, the newborn these unborn babies need care, and

according to her economic condition, Sheila can not provide such care. In addition,

the future of the children will also be prepared early, and whos requiring all this is

not just the baby, but also the other four children. If such treatment is not done well, it

could be a fetus in his mother's womb physical disability, which would likely suffermore if the fetus is born. Besides, if she still prohibited abortion, she could be make

abortion illegal actions that can be endanger her own body.

Nevertheless, I still do not approve actions abortion. Especially if the reason is not too

strong. Because a life is basically a gift from God, and noone can take it except God

himself. I still suggest that fetal was born. Because most mothers who did

abortion, eventually experiencing trauma and a very deep sense of guilt. And if the

reason is a financial problem, then I suggest that the baby is deposited at an

orphanage until he grows up, so the baby can still have the right to live like other

human beings.
