How to make candles at home

Making coloured and scented candles is really quick and simple. What's more, you'll save so much money. If making candles is easy, why do you ever buy one from a shop? What you need in making candles are wax, moulds, wick, dye discs, essential oils, and a double boiler. All these materials are available from craft shops. Or if you do not want to buy them, you can improvise with an old saucepan, Pyrex jug, or even a sturdy can, in a pot of water. After providing the materials, follow this procedure or instruction in making candles!

First of all, melt the wax. All wax has a flash point, so to prevent it from bursting into flames; you must melt it in a double boiler, with water at the bottom of the pan.

8

Page 9: smkn3singaraja.sch.idsmkn3singaraja.sch.id/public/files/BHSINGGIRS.docx · Web viewKumpulkan tugas prakerin pada wali kelas atau pembimbing industri sebelum masa prakerin berakhir

Then, prepare the mould with the wick. Thread the wick through the mould and make sure that you leave a good few centimeters sticking out of the hole in the bottom.

After that, add the scent. If you want a scented candle, add a few drops of essential oil to the melted wax. You can use any essential oil you like, as long as it doesn't contain water.

Next step, pour the wax into the mould. Try and tip the wax into the mould quickly, all in one go, to minimize spillage and air bubbles.

Then, release the bubbles and top it up. Releasing the air bubbles will eventually make the candle sink, so you will need to top it up with more melted wax.

Finally, remove it from the mould. After four or five hours, the candle can be taken out of its mould.

Your candle is now ready for display. Remember, you must always leave it for a day before lighting it.

23. What does paragraph one tell us about? A. The steps in making candles. B. The materials we need in making candles. C. The goal of the text in making candles. D. The way to make candles.

24. What should you do after melting the wax? A. Pour the melting wax into the mould. B. Remove the melting wax from the mould. C. Prepare the mould with the wick. D. Release the bubbles and top it up.

25. Where can you buy the materials for making candles? A. At the handicraft shop. B. At the super market. C. At the stall. D. At the craft shop.

RECOUNT TEXT

Last May, John and his friends Andy, Pete and Lucas went on an island trip. They arrived at Pulau Hilang on Monday morning and planned to leave the following morning. Little did they know their plans would go wrong! Nevertheless, the clever boys managed to turn it into an adventure.

It all started when Pete spotted a little island nearby and looked for a boat there to investigate. He found it very exciting as it was wild and unexplored. He crime back to tell the others and they decided to spend the night there.

That night, there was a violent thunderstorm. Their tents were blown away and all they managed to grab were a few bags before running for cover in a cave. The next morning, they surveyed the beach to try and salvage what they could of their belongings. They found packets of soggy food, spoilt matched and clothes thrown all over the place. They were collecting the items they could still use when they heard a loud cry. It was Lucas. They quickly ran to where he was standing. He was pointing to something on the ground. Then they saw the pieces of wood on the sand which used to be their boat! They had forgotten all about it last night and it had been smashed to pieces. Now, they were stranded!

They decided that the best thing to do was to construct a raft. By evening, they had obtained enough wood from the forest. It was a slow task cutting the branches because they only had small knives. The branches were tied together with vines. The raft would be steered using a long thin branch and some broad planks from the boat. Finally, they were ready to leave

Last week was a hectic week. I have been touring East Java and Bali. There were so many things that I've experienced that it's difficult to write about all of them.

I arrived in Yogyakarta on Sunday. I stayed in a cheap accommodation, a wisma. The room was clean and I could get hot water to bathe. On Monday, I went with a tour group to visit Borobudur and the Hindu temples in Prambanan. Some of these temples are more than twelve hundred years old. They date well beyond the churches in my home town in Europe, I was amazed at the enormity of the construction. I'm sure they did not have the heavy machines we have today to raise and lay those huge blocks of stone. The carvings on the walls were another feature of the construction.

I'm getting used to the spicy food served here. I have eaten fresh fish, lamb and beef. I know you don't eat all this but I've got used to it. On Tuesday I decided to go for a hike to Mount Merapi. But I found out that it was a difficult climb. So I went to the forest park in Kaliurang. That was a lovely walk that made me hot and tired. But I managed to cool off in a u'aterfall in the park then walked up to a hill nearby where I could see the smoky, fiery Mount Merapi.

A Trip to the Eden Project

Last Friday, our class traveled in the school bus to visit the Eden Project in Cornwall. It was a long ride to get there so we had to be at school an hour earlier, at eight o’clock. We brought our breakfast to eat on the bus.

When we arrived at the Eden Project, we could tell it was a big attraction by the size of the car parks, which were carefully laid out and named after fruits – we were in Plum Car Park. As we walked down, we could see the Eden Project buildings – two enormous plastic domes, built in a dip in the ground.

Mrs. Jeffries told us they were called “biomes” and the dip used to be a clay pit, where men had dug out the clay to use for making pots. We spent our morning going round the biomes, looking at the plants. One is kept very warm inside and filled with tropical plants like rubber trees, bamboo, spices, coconuts, and pineapples. There are also display of building and garden from tropical countries. The other biome is not so warm and among the plants there are oranges, lemons, grapes, and olives.

We had our lunch in the exhibition center, where we watched a video about “The Making of Eden” The Eden Project was built to show how men and plants depend upon each other and it cost millions of pounds to build. Next, we had a talk about the plants. A lady explained how to get cocoa beans and the cocoa milk from a pad and use them to make chocolate.

We were allowed to look in the shop and spent two pounds. I bought some stickers and a postcard of a man building the biomes. Finally, it was time for the long ride home. We were back by half past three, just in time for the bell.

UN 2012Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, residual fuel oil and

lubricating oil, come from one source. Crude oil is found below the earth surface, as well as under large bodies of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as deep as 25,000 feet into the earth interior. Crude oil is obtained by drilling a hole through the earth, but sometimes more dry holes are drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at the source, or pumping, forces the crude oil to the surface.

Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten to thousands of barrels per hour, Petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance: thin, thick, transparent or opaque, Their chemical compositions are made up of only two elements: carbon and hydrogen, which form compounds called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found in the union with the hydrocarbons are also found, but these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded. The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil by heating and condensing the vapors of crude oil. These products are called light oil such as gasoline kerosene and distillate oil.
