Highlights of the work completed since Dec 2008 as Director NISER
I assumed the charge of Director NISER in December 2008. At that time NISER was
running as a project of IOP and the IOP infrastructure was used for conducting classes of
the first batch of students. After I took over the charge I am trying to streamline the
functioning of NISER in terms of the infrastructure, formulating policies required for anacademic institute, creating research facilities for the state of the art research, finalizing
course structure and curriculum etc. The following are some highlights of the work done,
(I) INFRASTRUCTURE
(a) Created infrastructure in terms of NISER building of 5000 sq m with the help of
DCS&EM Mumbai at IOP campus.
(b) Completed the construction of girl’s hostel and facility for cooking and dining for
300 students.
(c) Procured 48 apartments from Govt. of Orissa on a rent basis to house NISER
students and temporary accommodation for faculty and staff.
(d) Installed new transformer for power requirement of NISER and IOP campus.
(e) The process of appointing an Architect for NISER campus was completed with
the help of DCS&EM.
(f) The master plan for NISER completed and approved by BOG NISER.
(g) 300 acres of land for NISER campus was procured from Govt. of Orissa
registered in the name of Atomic Energy and complete fencing of the land
completed.
(h) The tendering process for the construction of main campus of Jatni is in progress.
(i) Coordinated Prime Minister’s visit at NISER for the Foundation Stone laying
ceremony held on Dec 27 2009.
(II) ACADEMIC
(a) Course structure and curriculum for MSc Integrated degree in Physics, Chemistry,
Biology and Maths completed.
(b) Course structure and curriculum for PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Biology
and Maths completed.
(c) Recruitment of well qualified young faculty in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and
Mathematics. Presently NISER has about 49 permanent faculties in various levels.
(d) Policies and framework of NEST examinations for admitting students in NISER.

(e) NEST examination is conducted at 32 centers across the country for selection of
meritorious students for admission to NISER and CBS Mumbai.
(f) Computer center and other computer related infrastructure created for NISER
faculties, students and staff.
(g) Created state of the art teaching and research Labs in physics, chemistry, Biology
and Maths.
(h) Formulated detailed policies for promotion of NISER faculty and BOG of NISER
has approved the same.
(i) Designed and formulated a detailed PhD programme for various disciplines at
NISER and academic council and BOG of NISER has approved the same.
(III) ADMINISTRATION
(a) Recruitment of Administrative staff; Registrar, FO, DCA, AO, SPO, otherofficers and a well structured administration section has been created.
(b) Acadmeic administration in terms of Automation of students academic
performance, students grades, hostel management has been completed.
(c) Detailed guidelines for undergraduate programme and rules and regulations has
been formulated and both academic council and BOG has approved the same.
(d) Detailed guidelines for PG programme and rules and regulation has been
formulated and both academic council and BOG has approved the same.
(e) Guidelines for student Hostels and Hostel rules and regulations completed.
(f) Initiated an Endowment Fund for recognizing meritorious students performance.
(g) Policy for attracting R&D funds from Non-DAE sources by faculty is underway.
(h) Linkages for collaboration for R&D activity and student exchange is underway.
Already we have established Research & Development cooperation as well as
student exchange with Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Institute of Physics (IOP)
and Kanungo Institute of Diabetes Specialities (KIDS) at Bhubaneswar by signing
MOU’s.

As a convenor, I have organized regional meetings on selected topics so as to
provide an opportunity to young researchers to congregate and share their excitements,
organized lectures by eminent scientists, promotion of activities in chemical education at
all levels involving teachers and students, organized activity such as exhibition/contests
to enhanced the image of chemistry and visibility of CRSI, promotion of academic
research/industry interaction at various levels and celebrated important milestones in
chemical research.

Activities at Indian Chemical Society
As a member of Indian Chemical Society, I have been involved in promotion of
Science and Technology in underdeveloped urban and rural areas. To this effect, many
annual activities are planned to teach the young children’s about the facets of Science andtheir application to people at large. Also, workshops and seminars by eminent people are
conducted on a regular basis to activate the young students to pursue Science as a career.
For my activities and contributions, I have been awarded “P.R. Ray memorial award for
the year 2002” by Indian Chemical Society, Kolkata, India.
