TARGET BOARD Newsletter of the Meeker Sportsman Club, Inc. JUNE 2010 FISHING DERBY This event is simply too much fun! We always manage to have a couple of families who had never fished before. It's a good feeling to know you provided that first opportunity for someone to try something new. The most comical fisherman this year was a young boy who would have his father cast for him and then calmly hold the pole and watch the bobber. Soon as there was a tug on the line the boy would hysterically throw the pole at his dad, scream, then run the opposite direction! Poor guy was scared to death of the fish! We had a great lunch and, thanks to the ODNR Grant, all 34 kids went home with either a brand new fishing rod or tackle box with tackle. The kids caught a total of 150 fish consisting of, Blue Gil, Large and Small Mouth Bass, Stripers, and Catfish. Norton's Sporting Goods also helped out by donating some of the $10 gift certificates that were given out as prizes. Thanks to all of you who showed up after the last minute calls and emails.... seems not too many people planned ahead to help at the derby and we were getting down to the wire with very little help. Special thanks to our Wildlife Officer Chad Grote for showing up “unofficially” and off-duty! HUNTER'S ED August 28 & 29, Saturday 10:00 - 4:00 and Sunday 12:00 – 4:00. Supper will be served from 6:00 pm till the fish is gone. Advance tickets and take-out will be available. We plan on a game feed in September or October. 400 YARD RANGE The weather hasn't been very cooperative. While there was quite a bit of work done on the range in May we have yet to move in the heavy equipment. If you've been to the club recently you've noticed a dozer and hoe parked near the club house. As soon and possible they will be moved to the new range and begin work. The work shouldn't take long but rain will play a big part in the schedule. Once the equipment is moved to the new range there will be no shooting on the 200 yard range. Exceptions to this are the Military Match and Bowling Pin League Match, range work will cease and equipment will be moved for those two events only. We can't afford to take the chance of damaging the equipment. We know this may be a big inconvenience for some of you but in the long run it will be worth it. If you are driving any distance at all and need to know weather the range is cleared for shooting please call 740-361-1767. WOMEN'S PISTOL PRACTICE First Monday of the month will be handgun practice for women only. Run BY women, FOR women. If you know a woman who is interested in shooting but has avoided participating because they aren't exactly comfortable shooting with the guys... tell them about this! The practice will be headed up by Darlene Crow who is an NRA Certified Basic Pistol Instructor and Ohio CCW Instructor. Beginners are encouraged to attend even if they have never fired a weapon. Firearms will be available for those who don't own one or would like to try one out before making that big purchase. Range Fee: $5 club members, $6 non-members. For more information call Darlene at 419-310-2065 or Linda at 740-361-7281. ARCHERY The IBO Qualifier went extremely well. We had more shooters than last year however the weather forecast was so bad the most shooters chose not to qualify and just shoot for practice, paying $8 rather than $20. We still made over $800 and lots of great compliments on the work we've done to our range. We've been told it's one of the best ranges in Ohio! To those of you who helped, Thank You!! We had an excellent turn out of members to help which made things go smooth and easy! NOW – we need to ask for help setting up for the next shoot! Several of us that ALWAYS help set up will not be here on Saturday, June 19 th to set out targets. We desperately need several people and at least one tractor to pull the trailer with the targets. If you can help call 740-361-7281, and please don't wait till the last minute!! We need to know ahead of time that we have dependable help. It's taken a lot of time and work to build this event and we don't want people showing up to a course that isn't ready! BOWLING PIN LEAGUE The Meeker Team has been whaling on Richwood! We don't have the second match results but here are the first: Meeker Times: Mike Couts 52.69 Joe White 55.26 Brian Ratliff 57.37 Bill Wasserbeck 59.66 Aaron Criswell 81.33 Total Time 306.31 Richwood Times: Zak Gracek 58.77 Steve Krieg 60.68 Steve Ormerod 76.29 Josh Dillahurt 105.74 Caleb Yeager 116.95 Total Time 418.43 Anyone interested in joining the team can call Zak 614-325- 1455 or Bill 740-528-2779.
