    Louis uicly realised how useful this system could be# but thou!ht it was too

    complicated. "ver the ne*t few years he wored hard to develop his own version of the code#

    usin! 'ust si* dots to represent the standard alphabet.

    By 182# a!ed 'ust 13 years old# Louis had found 45 ways to use a si*6dot cell in an area

    no lar!er than a fin!ertip. He had also perfected his $planchette$ or writin! slate# which !ave

    precise placin! for the pattern of raised dots when writin! braille.

    Braille is a !reat way for blind people to read and write. Braille is 'ust the alphabet and

    numbers# desi!ned to be read by fin!ers rather than eyes. Braille is for anyone who has or is

    liely to lose their si!ht and would find that usin! lar!e print becomes difficult. Braille can be

    learnt and used by children or adults to read and write pretty much anythin!7

    Braille is a code based on si* dots# arran!ed in two columns of three dots. /here are

    different types of braille codes. /hese use variations of the si* dots to represent all the letters of

    the alphabet# numbers# punctuation mars and commonly6occurrin! !roups of letters.

    /here are 45 possible combinations of the si* dots. % blind (rench schoolboy named Louis

    Brailledevised the code over 00 years a!o. /here are two !rades of braille ncontracted :previously ;rade 1< braille is a strai!htforward letter for letter

    translation from print and includes the alphabet# numbers and punctuation mars.

    Contracted :previously ;rade < braille has special si!ns for combinations of

    letters and more commonly occurin! words# such as $sh$# $in!$# $the$ and $for$. /his

    reduces the si=e of braille documents by about 3 per cent# and !enerally

    increases readin! speed.

    /here are also special codes# for instance for music# mathematics# science and forei!n

    lan!ua!es.

    Louis Braille spent his life teachin! the system to as many people as possible# first as afellow student at the school and then later when he became a teacher there. He translated many

    boos into braille and was much lied and respected by his students.

    &pendin! so much of his life in such poor and damp conditions probably contributed to

    Louis Braille contractin! tuberculosis in his twenties. He battled with the illness for the rest of

    this life. )espite encounterin! much resistance to braille he never stopped believin! in his

    system. He died on 4 >anuary 183# 'ust two days after his 25rd birthday# unaware that his

    invention would one day be used all over the world.

    -n 193# Louis Braille$s accomplishments were finally reco!nised by the (rench

    !overnment and his body was e*humed and reburied in the Pantheon in Paris# with other (rench

    national heroes. /oday he is celebrated as a hero for all blind and partially si!hted people. He

    !ave the !ift of independence and the 'oy of readin! to thousands of people around the world.
