The Hawaiian Theatre Program Presents Ka Unulau o Halāli‘i Join us for a special presentation on the art of mele/waiata composition, haku kole, and the use of imagery in poetry composition by Dr. Timoti Karetu, Kumu Hula Keali‘i Reichel, and Kumu Hula Keawe Lopes. Tuesday, 22 November 2016, 12:00 – 2:00 pm Kennedy Theatre Mainstage Dr. Tīmoti Karetu was born in 1937 and is a descendant of the Ngāi Tūhoe and Ngāti Kahungunu tribes. He is a scholar who is nationally and internationally recognised for his knowledge of the Māori language. Tīmoti is also a prolific composer and Māori performing arts expert. In 1970, he was appointed as the first Professor of Māori Studies at the University of Waikato. In 1987 he became the first Māori Language Commissioner at Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori. He continued in the role until 1999. From 2003, Tīmoti was the Head of Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust. Tīmoti has been involved in numerous Māori performing arts competitions as a tutor, a composer, a judge and an organiser. He was the head of the national Māori performing arts competition for many years. Tīmoti has received two Honorary Doctorates; one from Victoria University of Wellington and the other from The University of Waikato. He is a Director of Te Panekiretanga o te Reo, a programme established to promote excellence in the Māori language. Tīmoti Karetu continues to be a stalwart of the Māori language and is unflinching in his dedication to the Māori language. He is the formost expert in Māori language revitalisation efforts and is a role model and mentor for many in the field of language revitalisation both foreign and domestic. Renowned as one of Hawai'i's most popular recording artists, Keali'i Reichel is the award-winning kumu hula of Hālau Keʻalaokamaile. His music, chant, and hula represent the best of Hawai'i's traditional and contemporary poetry and dance today. His hālau has brought home top awards from the prestigious hula competition, Merrie Monarch Festival, and he has won multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards for his music, in addition to a top spot on world music charts. This event is free and open to students, faculty, and staff of the University of Hawai‘i system campuses and the greater community of Hawai‘i. This series of workshops and lecturers has been made possible in part through Special Funding from the Hawai‘i State Legislature. Ka Unulau o Halāli‘i series coincides with the inaugural offering of Theatre 478: Hula Ki‘i: Hawaiian Puppetry and Image Dances in the Department of Theatre and Dance, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
