READING COMPREHENSIONRead the passage carefully and select the one correct answer from the four choices (A, B, C, or D)!

Reading 1 for questions 161 – 167Some people believe that Mathematics is a difficult, dull subject that is to be pursued only in a clear cut, logical fashion. This belief

is perpetuated because of the way Mathematics is presented in many textbooks. Often Mathematics is reduced to a series ofdefinitions, methods to solve various types of problems, and theorems. Theorems are statement whose truth can be established bymeans of deductive reasoning and proofs. This is not to minimize the importance of proof in mathematics, for it is the very thing that givesMathematics its strength. But the power of the imagination is every bit as important as the power of deductive reasoning.

The long history in the development of a concept or any of the unproductive approaches that were taken by early mathematiciansis not always addressed in mathematics courses. That fact is that the mathematicians seeks out relationships in simple cases, looks forpatterns, and only then tries to generalize. It is often much later that the generalization is proved and find its way into an actual textbook.

One way we can learn much about Mathematics and in the meantime find enjoyment in the process is by studying numericalrelationships that exhibit unusual patterns. For example, children may find it easier to learn their multiplication tables by exploring thepatterns that the numbers display. Even complicated arithmetic problems can sometimes be solved by using patterns. Given a difficultproblem, a mathematician will often try to solve a simpler, but similar problem. This type of reasoning - first observing patterns and thenpredicting answers in complicated problems - is an example of INDUCTIVE REASONING. It involves reasoning from particular facts orindividual cases to a general statement that may be true. The more individual occurences that are observed, the better able we are to makea correct generalization. For instance, we can predict the exact time of sunrise and sunset each day. This is an example of inductivereasoning since the prediction is based on a large number of observed cases. Thus, there is a very high probability that the prediction willbe successful.

161. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Inductive reasoning should be included in the study of

mathematics.B. Mathematics can be studied only in a logical manner.C. Proving theorems should be the central focus of math.D. Mathematics courses should concentrate on deductive

reasoning.

162. By stating often mathematics is reduced to a series ofdefinition, the author implies that ….A. math include more than definitionB. definition are rarely studied in mathC. math is best studied by focusing definitionD. math is too difficult for most people to understand

163. The word ‘power’ is close in meaning to ….A. Origin C. qualityB. Strength D. Appropriateness

164. The author believes that many math textbooksunderestimate the importance of …

A. Imagination C. multiplicationB. Logic D.formulas

165. The word ‘cases’ in the passage is close in meaning to ...A. situations C. argumentsB.methods D. properties

166. Which is first step in an inductive reasoning process?A. generalization C. definitionB. prediction D. Observation

167. Why does the author mention sunrise and sunset inparagraph 3?A. to describe how difficult it is to make generalizationB. to demonstrate that probability is unrelated to mathC. to give an example of a prediction based on patternD. to explain that scientific generalizations may be stated in

mathematical language

Reading 2 for questions 168 – 174BIG SKY, Mon-At the very top of a rocky, wind-whipped ridge above this sprawling ski resort west of Yellowstone National Park

stands a towering grove of ancient whitebark pine trees. They are one of the few living things that thrive in the harshness at such altitudes, and they produce a large nut that is rich in fat and critical to wildlife.

There is mounting concern among biologists and other researchers, however, that global climate change may be creatingconditions in and around the park that are inhospitable for the tree. If climate warming is the real, long-term phenomenon that manyexperts think it is, scientists believe it could set off a series of changes that could kill 90 percent or more of the whitebark pine trees andpossibly compromise the future of the threatened grizzly bear.

The whitebark pine produces cones with pea-size nuts that bears eat in the fall. “Of all the vegetable foods in the ecosystem, whitebark pine is probably the most important,” said Chuck Schwartz, leader of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team, a federal agencyresponsible for protection of the bear. “They are critical to the fall fattening process to get the bears through the winter.”

168. The purpose of the writer in writing the passage is to …A. tell the reader an interesting and amusing storyB. persuade the reader to go to Yellowstone National ParkC. warn the reader about the wildlife of whitebark pineD. inform the reader about the importance of whitebark pine

169. The word that in the first sentence of paragraph two refersto....A. Biologists C. researchersB. Conditions D. climate change

170. The climate change is worried by biologists and otherresearchers because it …A. may create damage to the ski resortB. may support the wildlife ecosystem in long termC. could set off less than 90 percent of whitebark pine treesD. could threaten the life of grizzly bears

171. Why do grizzly bears need to eat whitebark pine nuts?A.because the nuts are the only food available in the parkB.because the nuts help the bears fatten up for the winterC.because the nuts contain an important kind of protein

D.because the nuts are important for the bears in the climatewarming

172. The passage mainly discusses about ……A. the existence of whitebark pine treeB. the destruction of ancient whitebark pine treeC. the usage of whitebark pine treeD. the ecosystem of grizzly bears

173. It is implied that global warming could affect grizzly bearsby.....A. making their coats less warmB. causing to have fewer cubsC. harming the trees that produce their major foodD. increasing the number of animals that can kill them

174. What does the word thrive in paragraph one mean?A. lie C. growB. extend D. function

Reading 3 for questions 175 – 180These huge waves wreak terrific damage when they crash on the shores of distant lands or continents. Under a perfectly sunny

sky and from an apparently calm sea, a wall of water may break twenty or thirty feet high over beaches and waterfronts, crushing housesand drowning unsuspecting residents and bathers in its path.

How are these waves formed? When a submarine earthquake occurs, it is likely to set up a tremendous amount of shock, disturbing the quiet waters of the deep ocean. This disturbance travels to the surface and forms a huge swell in the ocean many milesacross. It rolls outward in all directions, and the water lowers in the center as another swell looms up. Thus, a series of concentric swellsare formed similar to those made when a coin or small pebble is dropped into a basin of water. The big difference is in the size. Each of theconcentric rings of basin water traveling out toward the edge is only about an inch across and less than a quarter of an inch high. Theswells in the ocean are sometimes nearly a mile wide and rise to several multiples of ten feet in height.

Many of us have heard about these waves, often referred to by their Japanese name of "tsunami." For ages they have beendreaded in the Pacific, as no shore has been free from them. An underwater earthquake in the Aleutian Islands could start a swell thatwould break along the shores and cause severe damage in the southern part of Chile in South America. These waves travel hundreds ofmiles an hour, and one can understand how they would crash as violent breakers when caused to drag in the shallow waters of a coast.

Nothing was done about tsunamis until after World War II. In 1947 a particularly bad submarine earthquake took place south ofthe Aleutian Islands. A few hours later, people bathing in the sun along the quiet shores of Hawaii were dashed to death and shore-lineproperty became a mass of shambles because a series of monstrous, breaking swells crashed along the shore and drove far inland.Hundreds of lives were lost in this catastrophe, and millions upon millions of dollars' worth of damage was done.

175. One surprising aspect of the waves discussed in thepassage is the fact that they...A. are formed in concentric patternsB. often strike during clear waterC. arise under conditions of cold temperatureD. are produced by deep swells

176. The waves discussed in the passage often strike…A. along the coasts of the Aleutian IslandsB. in regions outside the area monitored bu the Coast andGeodetic SurveyC. at great distances from their place of originD. at the same time as the occurrence of eartquakes

177. It is believed that the waves are caused by…A. seismic changes C. atmospheric conditions

B. concentric time belts D. underwater earthquakes

178. A possible title for the passage could be…A. How Submarine Waves are FormedB. How to Locate Submarine EarthquakesC. Underwater EarthquakesD. “Tsunami” Waves

179. The word “dreaded” in line 11 is closest in meaning to ….A. Known C. AnticipatedB. Terrified D. Happened
