Denpasar (Bali Post)—Circular of the Governor of Bali

about the suspension of permit issu-ance for investment in the accommo-dation service of star-hotel and bou-tique hotel draws a reaction fromDenpasar Municipality. In terms of theexisting facts, Denpasar remains tohave opportunities to receive invest-ment in this accommodation business.Even, there are now eight new appli-cations submitted to the DenpasarGovernment Tourism Office.

In Nusa Penida, there are four tra-ditional ports. They consist ofSampalan Port serving the crossingto Bias Hamlet, Kusamba; MentigiPort, serving the crossing to TriBhuana Hamlet, Kusamba and ToyaPakeh Port serving the crossing toKampung Kusamba and the last one,Buyuk Port serving the crossing toPadangbai, Karangasem.

Except for Buyuk Port, the tradi-tional ports have become the optionof traders because they are more se-cure and comfortable. It does notmatter if the capacity of the tradi-tional crossing is fewer than themore modern Roro ship. Similarly, the travel time is also longer. “I donot know why, but I feel more com-fortable to cross my merchandise bytraditional boat,” confessed Ayu, aservice user of traditional boat whois also a trader in Mentigi Market.

Every port has a dozen to tens ofporters as well as peddlers of trans-portation service. They do not onlycarry goods, but also carry passen-gers who do not want their clothessoaked, moreover, when it tides up.“My earning is uncertain, depend-ing on the number of passengers,”said one of the porters at Mentigi

Aside from the Nusa Penida Pier, a number of traditional ports stay active in providing thecrossing services to and from Nusa Penida. Traditional port remains to become a traditional modeof transport for the island residents. In addition to conferring a livelihood opportunity to theowners of traditional boats, the existence of traditional ports also support the economy of tens ofporters. Though their income falls and rises and even only reaches IDR 3,000 a day, those porterslive their profession faithfully.

Harbor, Made Sueca.Admittedly, working as a porter

and peddler of transportation ser-vices was not a promising job. Itsearning fluctuated depending on thenumber of passengers. Whencrowded, he said, such as on publicholiday or feast days, the highestearning could reach IDR 50 thousandper day. However, during low sea-son he only earned IDR 3,000 a day.In reality, he should be soaking tocommit the work. Indeed, the dis-tance was not far away, only about 4meters from the beachside to the endof the boat. “The number of publicholidays and feast days is less thannormal days. On that account, as aporter, we frequently earned lessthan more,” he said.

He exemplified on Tuesday (Feb2), the passenger was quiet and thecrossing was only once. As a result,Sueca only obtained IDR 2,000 be-cause he only carried one passenger.“Indeed, the number of passengersand goods transported are a lot. But,we are working as a porter withmany friends. Here (at Mentigi Har-bor—Ed), there are 30 porters,” hesaid. However, Sueca confessed hewould never leave the profession.Aside from congregating with the

fellow porters, he also could help thepassengers and it was close to hishome.

Similar condition was confessedby number of porters and peddlersof transportation services atSampalan and Toya Pakeh Port.Though their income was uncertain, they claimed that they could supporttheir family by the current job. Whenpassengers were quiet, the porterscould do any other job at their sur-rounding, like cleaning up the boatsand others.

A counter officer at the SampalanPort, Dewa Made Wiyasa, justifiedthat the current number of passen-gers through traditional port de-clined. Only merchants and a num-ber of other public passengers couldhold out and feel comfortable tocross by traditional boat. Meanwhile, the other passengers preferred to takeRoro ship. “Formerly, the crossingcould go back and forth for severaltimes. Today, it is only one time, ex-cept on holidays reaching manytimes,” said Dewa Wiyasa. The num-ber of passengers for once departuretended to decrease. By and large, itwas between 60 to 80 passengers andeven more. He added the current pas-sengers were maximally 40. (bal)

Plant disease runs riotin Buleleng

Singaraja (BaliPost)—

At least 87 hect-ares of rice crops inK u b u t a m b a h a nsubdistrict decayedand virtually couldbe ascertained toface crop failures. Itoccurred after therice crops had beenattacked by ricewhite stem borer( S c i r p o p h a g ainnotata) since afew days ago.

Stem of the ricecrop of just a monthold decayed andleaves turned yel-low as well as mostof them were dead.Rice fields that pre-viously were filledwith rice seedlingslooked in tatters be-cause some parts ofthe rice crops wereattacked by viciouscaterpillars. On ac-count of such con-dition, farmers in

Kubutambahan were estimated to suffer from a loss of more than IDR 187million.

Chief of Subak (Balinese irrigation cooperative) Uma Desa, MadeDarmadia, said the stem borer attack took place in four subaks ofKubutambahan Village. They were the subak of Uma Desa, Tambahan,Babakan and Tukad Dalem. On average, the damaged rice plants due tostem borer in the three subaks were approximately 15 hectares. So, thetotal damaged rice crops and in danger of crop failure in Kubutambahanreached about 85 hectares.

Especially in the subak of Uma Desa, the total fields whose rice cropwas damaged reached 35 hectares. If calculated, the farmer suffered a lossof averagely IDR 2.5 million per hectare. This cost included the charges ofhand tractor, purchase of seed, planting costs, and fertilizer purchase. There-fore, the losses suffered by farmers in the subak of Uma Desa reached IDR87 million more.

Meanwhile, Kadek Saniasa, a farmer of Subak Uma Desa, said that afew days after the rice was planted in January, the growth of his rice cropseemed normal. However, a few weeks later their leaves suddenly startedto turn yellow. Having been observed, stems of the plant already rotted aseaten by stem borer caterpillar.

Saniasa admitted that he had made preventive efforts by spraying toxicinsecticides. In addition, he also did fertilizing to help the growth of plants.Yet, the result was not optimal. Stem borers still continued to attack andthe transmission was getting more rampant. “I do not really know how tocope with the matter. I once sprayed it by poison and fertilizer was added,in reality the efforts did not work. Up to these days, the plant disease re-mains to attack,” he said.

According to Saniasa, he did not know what to do anymore to resolve theattack of plant disease. His party had reported the matter to the field extensionofficer (PPL), but his report was not responded yet. Meanwhile, the diseasewas getting more violent and farmers really expected the help to overcome theproblem. Even, he also hoped if government could lend a hand to alleviate theburden of losses incurred. Moreover, most farmers of Kubutambahan weresharecroppers cultivating the land of others. As consequence, if the crop failed, they would automatically lose their income. “Now, we are getting confused. We much appreciate if the field extension officers could give us explanationabout the plant disease and how to cope with it,” he said.

SYDNEY – Australian PrimeMinister Julia Gillard Wednesdayurged Aboriginals to take more re-sponsibility for improving their no-toriously poor living standards, warn-ing government progress had beenslow. Gillard, presenting an annualreport on Australia’s indigenouspeople, said it would be “extremelychallenging” to meet the core targetof markedly improving their life ex-pectancy within a generation.

She stressed that deep culturalchanges were needed “to break thecycle of blame between Australiangovernments and indigenous Austra-lia”, adding that lives would only im-prove through greater “personal re-sponsibility”. Gillard unveiled the re-port three years after her predecessor,Kevin Rudd, made a historic apologyto Aborigines for abuses suffered un-der successive governments sincewhite settlement began in 1788.

“Indigenous people know thatwhen the child starts attendingschool, when the drinker stops abus-ing alcohol, when the adult takes thejob that is there, then change be-gins,” she told parliament. “And in-digenous people know these deci-sions are not made by governments. They are made by people.”

For the protesters, maintain-ing impetus is crucial. Some of themfear that a protracted stalemate willsap enthusiasm and draw more criti-cism from Egyptians who are not inthe street but are feeling the eco-nomic impact of the turmoil.

Many in a country where about40 percent of people live on less than$2 a day are desperate to return towork and normal life, even some ofthose wanting to oust Mubarak. Aprotest called for Friday will be abig test of strength.

The numbers of Tuesday’s pro-test were boosted by Google execu-tive Wael Ghonim’s emotional ac-

count of being blindfolded during12 days in detention for Internetactivism. “You are the heroes. I am

not a hero, you are the heroes,”Ghonim told the cheering crowds.

MILAN – Italian prosecutors on Wednesday requested that Premier Silvio Berlusconistand trial over accusations he paid for sex with a 17-year-old girl, then used his influenceto try to cover it up.

when word of the indictment re-quest came down.

The prosecutors are seeking animmediate trial because they be-lieve there is overwhelming evi-dence against the premier. The pro-cedure allows prosecutors to skipthe preliminary-hearing phase andgo straight to court.

They allege that Berlusconi paidfor sex with a Moroccan girl nick-named Ruby, who has since turned18, then used his influence to gether out of police custody when shewas detained for the suspectedtheft of euro3,000 ($4,103), alleg-edly fearing her relationship to himwould be revealed. Ruby ulti-mately was released into the cus-

tody of a Berlusconi aide whoalso is under investigation.

The premier’s supporters sayhe made the call to avoid a diplo-matic incident becauseBerlusconi believed at the timethat the girl was the niece ofEgyptian President HosniMubarak. His defense maintainsthe case should be handled not bythe Milan prosecutors but by aspecial tribunal set up to deal withalleged offenses committed bypublic officials.

The prosecution said in a state-ment that they didn’t believe thealleged crime was committed inthe exercise of Berlusconi’s insti-tutional duties.

Meanwhile, Udayana University has performed variousstudies in relation to the project since 2005 concerning withseveral aspects of Bayung Gede Village. “Previously BayungGede Village was just as a backup, but having been reviewedby a team from central government, our village were fi-nally selected,” he explained.

Similarly, he mentioned that the basic reason on the se-lection of Bayung Gede Village as tourism pilot project 2010was stated in the letter from the Coordinating Ministry forPeople’s Welfare No. 10.13.834/KMD/D/VII/V/2010. Withthe publication of the letter, it meant in the development ofcommunity-based cultural tourism of Bayung Gede, the gov-ernment would allocate a fund worth IDR 2.5 billion.

The main factor of Bayung Gede Village selected as apilot project, according to Suwela, was caused by a uniquetradition owned by the village prevailing a prohibition tonewlywed couple. In the village, the couple recently mar-ried is not allowed to enter into the home yard and not re-garded as residents of the Bayung Gede Village before pay-ing tumbakan (a kind of dowry) submitted to the village inthe form of two bulls and undertaking particular fasting.

In addition, the newlywed couple was required to makea procession called penyekeban (maturation) by living in asmall shack at the end of the local village. In addition to thisunique tradition, Bayung Gede also has a system of gov-ernment practiced from time immemorial called saihnembelas system. This traditional government system, con-tinued Suwela, ran the administration chaired by a leadermanaging the local temples and traditional village. “Withthis traditional leadership system, the residents of our vil-

lage remain well united up to these days,” he said.Regarding to livelihood, he explained that since 2005

most local residents had relied on the crops obtained fromplanting citrus, while previously they only cultivated cas-sava and gogo rice variety planted on non-irrigated field.

In the meantime, for the management of Bayung GedeVillage as a tourism pilot project, Suwela added, his partywould establish a committee. “In years to come, this com-mittee will manage the assistance obtained and at the sametime build the tourism at Gede Bayung Village,” he con-cluded. (BTN/BB)

WASHINGTON – Toyota Mo-tor Corp., which built its reputationin the U.S. on safety and reliabil-ity, has been cleared by the gov-ernment of electronic problems inits vehicles. Now it needs to con-vince consumers that it has put itssafety recalls in the rear view mir-ror.

The Transportation Departmentsaid Tuesday that electronic flawswere not to blame for reports ofsudden, unintended accelerationthat have figured in the recalls ofmore than 12 million Toyota ve-hicles globally. The findings bol-stered Toyota’s contention that thecompany had directly dealt with theproblems through its recalls and ismaking safety paramount in itslineup.

Analysts said it would take morethan a government report to repairToyota’s once pristine image forproducing quality vehicles. Toyotawas the only major automaker tosee a U.S. sales decline last year at0.4 percent and saw its U.S. mar-ket share fall nearly 2 percentagepoints to 15.2 percent. The declinecame even though total U.S. salesrose 11 percent for the year.

“This is really something that isgoing to take years and years to re-cover,” said Rebecca Lindland, di-rector of automotive research withconsulting firm IHS Automotive.

Toyota has wrestled with recallsto fix sticking accelerator pedals, gas pedals that became trapped infloor mats and other safety issues, forcing the world’s No. 1automaker to scramble to protectits reputation. Toyota paid the U.S.government a record $48.8 millionin fines for its handling of threerecalls.

Toyota said the government re-port should “further reinforce con-fidence in the safety of Toyota andLexus vehicles” and “put to rest un-supported speculation” about the

FRANKFURT – German exports grew by 18.5 percent in 2010 to 951.9 billion euros ($1.3trillion), the national statistics office said on Wednesday, while Berlin’s trade surplus gained 11.2percent to 154.3 billion.

goods from them, but a break-down of the figures showed im-ports rose faster than exports forboth the eurozone and broader 27-member European Union in 2010.

German exports to eurozonepartners, which numbered 15 lastyear, grew by 12.7 percent whileimports were up by 16.7 percent.

For the full EU, German ex-ports gained 14 percent, but im-ports rose by 17.5 percent.

Germany, which has the big-gest European economy, andFrance, which has the second big-gest economy in the now 17-member eurozone, is pressingheavily indebted partners to re-

form their economies in exchangefor financial backing.

Officials in Berlin have esti-mated the German economy willgrow by 2.3 percent, and that itspublic deficit will fall below theEU’s 3.0 percent limit this year to2.5 percent of gross domesticproduct (GDP).

German growth has been drivenby exports, but falling unemploy-ment, higher wages and increasedcorporate investment had raisedhopes that domestic demandwould help underpin a sustained

expansion of activity. In December however, German

exports grew by 0.5 percent on amonthly basis, while imports fellby 2.3 percent.

While China is growing in im-portance as a trade partner, eurozone countries, others in East-ern Europe and the United Statesare also key buyers of productsmade in Germany, ING senioreconomist Carsten Brzeski noted.

“It is this diversification whichshould be a warrantor for furtherexport strength in 2011,” he said.

Toyota trying to move beyond safety concernscompany’s electronic throttle con-trol systems, which are “well-de-signed and well-tested to ensure thata real world, uncommanded accel-eration of the vehicle cannot occur.”The company said it was “focusedon listening to our customers andconstantly improving our productsand service.”

Transportation officials, helpedby NASA engineers, said the 10-month study of Toyota vehicles con-cluded the acceleration cases couldhave been caused by mechanicaldefects already covered by recallsand suggested in some cases drivershit the gas when they intended topress the brakes. The study, launchedat the request of Congress, respondedto consumer complaints that flawedelectronics could be the culprit be-hind incidents that led to Toyota’sspate of recalls.

The automaker faces hundreds oflawsuits over alleged unwanted ac-celeration. Some consumer groupssaid the study was limited in its

reach, and they would continue topress the company over safety. “Wedon’t think the story’s over — not bya long shot,” said Sean Kane, founderof Safety Research & Strategies Inc.,a Massachusetts-based firm that hasstudied Toyota’s recalls.

Steve Berman, an attorney forplaintiffs in a class-action lawsuitagainst Toyota, said the report’s find-ings were “in stark contrast to whatToyota drivers across the countryexperienced — and continue to ex-perience — even after the series ofrecalls.” He said there were too manyreports of unwanted acceleration invehicles fixed under the recall toeliminate electronics.

Other automakers have facedsimilar problems in the past. Audidealt with a spate of unintended ac-celeration problems with its 5000sedan in the late 1980s. The car wasrecalled after complaints that it wouldsuddenly accelerate when shiftedfrom park to drive or reverse.NHTSA found that most of the inci-

dents were caused by drivers puttingtheir feet on the wrong pedals.

Audi’s U.S. sales bottomed out in1991 at just over 12,000 vehicles, butthe German automaker has madestrides with sporty luxury vehicles.Last year the company sold 101,629vehicles nationwide, according toWard’s AutoInfoBank.

David Champion, senior directorof auto testing for Consumer Reportsmagazine, said questions aboutToyota’s reliability first started tosurface in the magazine’s annual sub-scriber survey in 2007. In last year’ssurvey, Champion said, Toyota hadsome vehicles drop to below aver-age in reliability for the first time indecades.

“I do think they lost direction insome ways,” Champion said. “It’llbe interesting to see how they changedirection and go back to what they’regood at: building somewhat boringin some ways but very efficient andvery reliable sedans that people wantto buy.”

SYDNEY – Australia saidWednesday carbon emissions willrise more than predicted by 2020in the world’s biggest per capitapolluter, blaming its Asian-ledmining boom. The climate changedepartment predicted Australia’semissions will surge by as muchas 24 percent by 2020 comparedto 2000 levels, four percent higherthan last year’s projections.

“Growth to 2020 is dominatedby emissions associated with the ex-traction and processing of energyresources driven by strong exportdemand,” the department said in itsannual emissions report. “Fugitiveemissions from coal mines and oiland gas projects, as well as directfuel combustion emissions fromLNG projects, account for almosthalf of the growth in Australia’s to-tal emissions from 2010 to 2020.”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Pacificwalrus need additional protectionfrom the threat of climate warmingbut cannot be added to the threatenedor endangered list because other spe-cies are a higher priority, the U.S. Fishand Wildlife Service said Tuesday.

Walrus will be added to the “war-ranted but precluded” list, said agencyspokesman Bruce Wood, a designa-tion under the Endangered SpeciesAct that allows delays in listing if theagency is making progress listingother species and does not have re-sources to make a decision on others.

“The threats to the walrus are veryreal, as evidenced by this ‘warranted’finding,” said Geoff Haskett, theservice’s Alaska region director, in astatement. “But its greater populationnumbers and ability to adapt to land-based haulouts make its immediatesituation less dire than those facing

Endangered decision delayed on walrusother species such as the polar bear.”

He said cooperation with AlaskaNative groups, the state and other part-ners could lessen the long-term impactof climate change for the walrus andhelp it avoid an endangered listing.

The decision was condemned bythe Center for Biological Diversity, which in 2008 petitioned to list wal-rus as threatened or endangered, cit-ing threats to walrus’ sea ice habitat.Center spokeswoman Shaye Wolfsaid the warranted but precluded des-ignation is a black hole for imperiledspecies. Some have been so desig-nated for more than 20 years.

“This decision acknowledges thewalrus is facing extinction due toclimate change but the Obama ad-ministration is withholding the pro-tections that could help the walrussurvive,” Wolf said.

Scientists at the National Snow andIce Data Center have tracked a steadydecline in sea ice in recent decades.

Climate models have projected thatsummer sea ice could disappear by2030. Alaska’s walrus populationspends virtually the entire winter in theBering Sea on the edge of sea ice thatforms every year. In spring, as tempera-tures warm, ice melts and the edge ofthe sea ice moves north.

Older males spend the summer in theBering Sea, foraging from islands or re-mote coastal shores. Females and pups, however, ride the ice edge through theBering Strait and into the Chukchi andBeaufort seas, diving to the shallow con-tinental shelf in search of clams as pupsrest above them, safe from predators.

In recent years, summer sea icein summer has receded well beyondthe continental shelf over water toodeep for walrus to dive to reachclams. Walrus in three of the last fouryears congregated by the thousandson Alaska’s northwest shore. Largernumbers took refuge on the Russianside of the Chukchi Sea.

An asteroid about the size of a car will pass close by Earth Wednes-day (Feb. 9), the second space rock in five days to fly near – but poseno threat of hitting – our planet.

That asteroid was about 4 feet (1.3meters) wide, less than half the sizeof 2011 CA7. For comparison, thedistance between Earth and the moonis about 238,900 miles (384,402 km).

Like Friday’s asteroid flyby,2011 CA7 poses no threat of im-pacting Earth. Even if it did enterEarth’s atmosphere, the space rockwould never survive the fiery tripto the surface. It’s so small, it wouldlikely break apart or incinerate onthe way down.

Scientists say asteroids the sizeof 2011 CA7 and 2011 CQ 1 regu-larly fly close by Earth, but theirsmall size makes them hard to spot.

“It’s predicted that tiny space rockspass between Earth and moon almostdaily but are too small to be detectedand pose very little threat,” NASA’sasteroid-tracking team wrote in a Twit-ter message Monday (Feb. 7).

NASA and other dedicated as-tronomers routinely track asteroidsand comets as part of a near-Earth ob-servation program designed to seekout potentially hazardous objects thatcould pose an impact risk to Earth.

Potentially hazardous asteroids arespace rocks about 490 feet (nearly150 meters) wide or larger that fly tooclose to Earth for comfort, NASAofficials have said. Australia said Wednesday carbon emissions will rise more than pre-dicted by 2020 in the world’s biggest per capita polluter, blaming itsAsian-led mining boom.

Australia blames miningfor greenhouse gas rise

cent annually over the coming decade, compared with 0.4 percent since 2000.

By 2030 the report said emissionscould be 44 percent above 2000 lev-els, though it cautioned this was aless reliable prediction. Australia isthe world’s worst per capita polluterand home to its biggest coal exportport, shipping millions of tonnes ofenergy and steelmaking coal toAsian markets annually, as well asiron ore and other minerals.

It is also heavily dependent oncoal-fired power stations for elec-tricity, a sector the report said ac-counted for 36 percent ofAustralia’s total emissions in 2010.Direct fuel combustion and agricul-ture each contributed about 15 per-cent and transport was the third big-gest, at 14 percent.

The energy sector had spurredmost of the emissions growth since1990, “driven by Australia’s rela-tively high rates of economic growthand international demand forAustralia’s resources,” it added. Butrenewable energy incentives wouldsee growth in electricity-related pol-lution slow to just six percent overthe next decade, the report said.

BERLIN – Germany coach Joachim Loew on Tuesday hinted ex-captainMichael Ballack may no longer have a future in the national side after sayingthe veteran is not his first choice in midfield. Ballack, 34, has been left out ofthe Germany squad to face Italy in a friendly in Dortmund on Wednesday as heworks his way back to fitness after four months out with injury.

Having missed last year’s World Cup with after tearing ankle ligaments, Ger-many finished third in South Africa as Ballack’s defensive midfield role was filledby Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger. Loew gavethe clearest indication so far that Ballack’s international career may be over bysaying the ex-Chelsea star will need to win back his place for next month Euro2012 qualifier against Kazakhstan and friendly with Australia.

“Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger are my first choice in themidfield,” said Loew, with Ballack having won 98 caps for his country. “Weare not in the situation where we need to decide now if Michael Ballack will beback in the side in March.

“It all depends on him and whether he can produce the type of perfor-mances expected in the next few weeks.” “The quality of the player is whatcounts and whether he fits in with the style of football we are trying to play.”

Uncapped Dortmund midfielder Sven Bender is in the squad and with Loewhas said he is the back-up for Schweinsteiger and Khedira making Leverkusen’sBallack fourth choice.

“He wins a lot of the one-on-one duels, is very aggressive, but fair and isvery good at winning the ball,” said Loew of Bender. While Ballack is out inthe cold, Loew has recalled defender Wolfsburg’s Arne Friedrich, even thoughhe has also only recently returned from injury.

“Arne Friedrich wasn’t out injured for as long as Michael Ballack, who hadonly played once over 90 minutes and hasn’t found his rhythm,” explainedLoew. “For me it was obvious to bring Arne Friedrich back into the side.”

European clubs blast FIFA“disruption” of mooted changes tothe international fixture list includ-ing a winter World Cup.

It pointed to the sudden discov-ery of a FIFA decision last Octoberto add eight new dates to the inter-national match list in 2011 to 2014“without any consultation” or “pre-cise reason”, despite growing warn-ings about player exhaustion.

“ECA is supportive of nationalteam football but also believes thatplayer’s exhaustion through the ex-cessive number of games must beaddressed as a top priority,” it saidin a statement. “Currently this is notthe case.” The stance of powerfulEuropean clubs, which own manyof the world’s top internationalplayers, added to a wave of discon-tent with FIFA in the wake of thecontroversial race late last year tohost the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

They called for fixed rules forseveral seasons, a limit of one in-ternational tournament a year and a

clear seven week break after majorinternational tournaments like theWorld Cup continental champion-ships.

Clubs have repeatedly com-plained about the growing intensityand breadth of league, Europeanand international matches and theimpact on players, as well as trans-fer and commercial issues over theyears. They have gradually unitedwith the lead of big name clubs, forging ties with UEFA despite ten-sions.

But club executives feel increas-ingly left out of FIFA’s decisionmaking which they argue is now“heavily affecting club footballwithout the involvement of thestakeholders concerned”.

Manchester United chief execu-tive David Gill said that progresshad been made in Europe. “We haveexcellent dialogue with UEFA at themoment and we hope to have thatwith FIFA,” he told journalists.

As the team revealed its 2011 carduring an online launch on Tuesday, its CEO Otmar Szafnauer set out theteam’s ambitious targets for the forth-coming season.”Last year we fin-ished a strong seventh - and we weresixth for most of the season,” he said.“We always want to improve and ourobjectives this year are to finishhigher than last year.

“So we are targeting fifth place inthe championship – and in order to dothat we have to score points from thebeginning and then all the waythrough to the end. To do that, we needstrong development during the year –and if all goes well, then perhaps evena podium finish or two is an aim.”

Adrian Sutil, who is remaining atForce India for a fifth season in F1,believes that the fifth place target isdefinitely achieveable.

“We should be up there to score alot of points,” he said. “It is impor-tant to keep that level, and we mustnot tail off towards the end of theseason.”

Although Force India does nothave the finances to take on the mightof the big budget teams like Ferrari,McLaren and Red Bull Racing,Szafnauer still believes that the teamcan make good progress this year.

“We probably have half the per-sonnel of some of the other biggerteams, but we know that is where we

MotoGP world champion JorgeLorenzo says this year’s Yamaha isstill not as competitive as he wouldwant, the Spaniard admitting theengine is lacking power.

“In my opinion we haven’t madea clear leap forward,” Lorenzo wasquoted as saying by Motosprint. “Iknow exactly what we need, but wehaven’t got there yet. “We needmore power, so more speed whenaccelerating, and better traction, al-ways for the same goal: we aren’tstrong yet at turn exit.

“The new engine is more or lesslike the previous one. The most evi-dent progress is in the anti-spin sys-tem, because it’s more efficient now.I’m happy with that. It does help, but we need more horsepower. “Idon’t like the new chassis, because

are,” he said. “We have honed ourprocesses and procedures. We knowwhat we have to do and we go outand do it. We punch above ourweight, and our target is to do soeven more.

“It is difficult in the midfield, and the more we move up the moredifficult it becomes. But we are upfor the challenge. We think fifth inan achievable objective and target– and hopefully we can get podiumfinishes if all goes well.”

Although Force India has lostleading technical figures James Keyand Mark Smith to other teams overthe past 12 months, Szafnauer be-lieves the team still has a very solidinfrastructure. “We have strength indepth with the technical staff,” hesaid. “We have many people whohave been here a long time, andmany people coming into their own.

“We have created a good me-chanical package that is an evolu-tion of last year’s car, and we areworking hard on the aerodynamicpackage.

“We have increased our aerody-namic personnel. We run 24/7 in thewind tunnel, which is somethingthat is recent, and with those posi-tive changes we will be able to com-pete. It is never good to lose seniortechnical people, but such is thegame in F1.”

Lorenzo: Yamaha needs to improvethere’s more chatter. But I’m notparticularly worried about that. I re-peat: the priority at this time ispower,” added last year’s champion.

Honda riders set the pace in theopening test of the year at Sepang, with Lorenzo only fourth quickestoverall. The Yamaha rider claimedhis team will need to take a step for-ward in order to be able to enjoy thekind of success seen last year.

“Yes, laptimes are good, but at themoment, with this bike, it’s difficultto do better,” he said. “I would likea better bike, and this is what I’veasked of the engineers. I think everyrider asks for that.

“I’m not saying it’s not a winneranymore: I’m saying that in order towin the number of races won lastyear we need progress. At the mo-

ment, I think this bike would notenable me to repeat a successful sea-son like 2010. “Honda is going verywell: they started to make up groundmidway through last year and nowthey’ve made another step forward. This must worry us.”

He also conceded his new team-mate Ben Spies was strong than hehad anticipated. “Spies is strong.Honestly, he is faster than I ex-pected. Simoncelli has improved alot, he’s done a great laptime. SurelyHonda helps him, but in order to goas quick as he has, it means that he’smade a lot of progress too.

“The competition is gettingstronger and stronger: this will be atough, hard-fought season. That’swhy I would like us to do a big stepforward too.”
