Hundreds of residents attended a healthevent in Kokosi on 5 May.

People from Wedela, Khutsong andFochville walked from the taxi rank in Kokosi Extension 5 to the MolahlehiCommunity Hall as part of the event. The Mayor of Merafong, Maphefo Moga-le Letsie encourage the people to have ahealthy, balanced lifestyle and alwayshave protected sex.

The purpose of the event was to crea-te awareness of the need to take care ofoneself and to educate communitiesabout how to prevent diseases such as

HIV/Aids, TB and STI’s, among others. In addition to highlighting safe sex,

the event also promoted exercise, heal-thy nutrition and living a healthy lifesty-le. Young people were also remindedthat the outcome of doing drugs is veryunpleasant. Senior citizens entertainedthe crowd with dance, song and exerciseto prove that if a person takes care of him or herself, they will live longer. Theevent was described as a great success.

The body of a mother from Wedela wasrecently found in Randfontein, afterconsulting a Nigerian herbalist.

Sinah Motsei went missing on Sun-day 25 April. She had been in contactwith a Nigerian her-balist known as Dr.Subi after resigningfrom her job. Themother of two daugh-ters wanted him toassist with her legalmatters.

On Sunday, afterreceiving a phonecall, Sinah told herdaughter, Nthabis-eng, that she wasgoing to meet the doc-tor in town. She leftaround 13:00 and ex-pected to be back by15:00. The last con-tact that the familyhad with the womanwas a phone call ataround 20:00.

“She didn’t say anything. I just he-ard some funny noises. I tried callingher back, but her phone was off, and

so was the doctor’s,” says Nthabiseng.She reported her mother missing atWedela police station, but no actionwas taken until the Wedela communitygathered to complain about the mis-sing woman.

The police paid a visit to the doc-tor’s office nearthe Business Hivein Carletonville.The name on thedoor had beenchanged. Theyquestioned a manwho first said hewas looking for ajob. He laterchanged his storyand said he wasworking for Dr.Subi, who, heclaimed, had go-ne back to Nige-ria.

ses and found apiece of paper with

the name of the victim, an undisclosednumber of identity documents, belon-ging to young women, as well as cellu-lar phones and bank cards.

The suspect was arrested and heldin police custody. He was later relea-sed as there was no concrete evidencethat could prove he was guilty.

Sinah Motsei’s body was laterfound in Randfontein. She had appa-rently been raped and assaulted, witha fatal wound on the head.

The family is struggling to come toterms with their loss as police conti-nue to investigate the case.

A security guard was held at gunpointduring a robbery at Carletonville’s To-tal Sports on 22 April.

An unknown suspect entered theshop at around 17:00 on that Wednes-day. With his firearm pointed at the se-curity guard, he ordered everyone tomove to the storeroom at the back ofthe shop.

and tied the manager, a customer, andstaff members up with cables. One thesuspects said they did not want anyt-hing from the victims, and proceededto search the drawers. The suspectsfled the scene with a number of cellphones and items of clothing. A case ofbusiness robbery has been opened andinvestigations are still in process.

In another armed robbery, five sus-pects held up a spaza shop in Khuts-ong’s Ext. 5 on 30 April.

One suspect pointed a firearm at theowner of the shop, Mr Nesri Abdu, andthe customers, demanding money. Asuspect ransacked the counter as theothers held the customers down on thefloor. The suspects fled with an undis-closed amount of cash and were laterarrested.

In another incident, Slabbert Motorsin Station Street in Carletonville wasrobbed on Monday. The incident oc-curred just after 08:00.

Apparently two unknown men ente-red and later fled with money. Two em-ployees were hit with a firearm duringthe course of the robbery.

Two constables from Springs SAPS have been im-plicated after three murder suspects were killedon 17 April.

The officers, accompanied by three informers,were apparently looking for the four suspects inCarletonville. The first suspect was found, and la-ter died after being tortured. With the deceasedin tow, they continued their search for the otherthree suspects. After finding them, they took them

to a secluded areaand shot them withR5 rifles. One sus-pect managed toescape and laterinformed the poli-ce of the incident. Aconstable andthree informerswere arrested on 5May.

The GautengMEC for communi-ty safety, SizakeleNkosi-Malobane, was outraged at thebrutal killing of themurder suspects.

“Such conductcan never be tole-rated in the policeservice. Neitherthe code of conductfor public ser-vants, the oath ta-ken to protect andserve, nor the Ba-tho Pele principles

make room for such behaviour. No officersshould ever take the law into their own hands,”he said.

A case of murder has been opened againstthe police suspects, one of which is still at large.

“I also want to take this opportunity to com-mend the actions of the individual who spilt thebeans in this matter. It is only through such coo-peration between citizens and the police that wewill root out acts of misconduct in the publicservice,” the MEC concluded.

We are all faced with difficulties atsome point or another, but whatmatters is how you overcome yourproblems.

Most of the time, we are defeatedby the things we go through becausewe have the wrong mindset. I havepersonally discovered that the waywe react to our situations influenceshow well are able to handle them. Apositive attitude is the best way towin in whatever negative surroun-ding or situation that you may comeacross. Being positive in life helpsyou to see the light, even if you areinside the darkest tunnel which ma-ny are going through. It gives one ho-pe to continue and look forward toa brighter future. Negativity, on theother hand, affects people so theycannot see further than where theyare. We have to adopt a different wayof approaching our problems. No-wadays, people have adopted theword “stress” and made it a part oftheir lives. Stressing does not resol-ve anything, it only makes matters

worse. In order to alter this kind ofthinking, we have to alter our attitu-des. We need to move away from bla-ming others, even ourselves becausewe are not solving anything.

A positive attitude helps you to wor-ry less and do more to find the soluti-ons. Worry only creates more negativefeelings and it becomes hard to copewith the pressures that we go through.People need to know that positive thin-king allows positive events to take pla-ce because it attracts everything thatis good. Everything works with energyand the energy that you give out to theuniverse reflects in your life.

If you want to develop positive ener-gy then you have to stop focusing onthe bad or wrong things and ratherconcentrate on everything that makesyou happy. It is a matter of learning toappreciate the little things in life in-stead of complaining about what youdon’t have.

It is a shift that will help you see lifein a much brighter way because whenyou focus on the worst, you make theload heavier to carry.

On Sunday, the Greater Carletonvillebranch of the Orlando Pirates Suppor-ters’ Club held a march in Carletonvilleagainst the xenophobic attacks that ha-ve rocked the country.

“We condemn the killing of foreignnationals in the strongest possibleterms,” the club’s treasurer, Mr LucasMojaki, said.

The march started at the club’s he-adquarters at the Chicago Bar and Res-taurant in Emerald Street. From here,the Pirates were joined by foreign natio-nals from Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe,Nigeria, Uganda, Lesotho, Botswana,Somalia, Swaziland, Algeria and Mo-zambique as well as some from Pakis-tan and Bangladesh. The group ofabout 200 people proceeded downAmethyst, Osmium and Zeolite streetto the Carletonville taxi rank and thenback up Ada Street to the CarletonvillePolice Station. Here, the group sang thenational anthem before continuing totheir starting point.

“We are appealing to Merafong Muni-cipality, led by our beloved mayor, Ma-phefo Leisie Mogale to organise anothermarch with all the stakeholders in Car-letonville against xenophobic attackson our African brothers and sisters. Asa branch, we are not aware of any xeno-phobic attacks in our area, but we are

supporting the message of our presi-dent, Jacob Zuma, and the entireworld. Foreign nationals are here tocontribute to the growth of our econo-my through their skill and expertise,”said Mojaki.

“Many of our South African brothersand sisters are employed by foreign Af-rican nationals, who are thus creatingjobs and putting bread on our tables.South Africa belongs to all who live init, as it is stated in the Freedom Charterof 1955. We also say that you are an Af-rican before you become South African.Attacks on foreign nationals are thework of criminals who want to destabi-lise our country. They are lazy and don’twant to work, but they expect mannafrom heaven, 21 years after our inde-pendence. Shame on them, they mustbe exposed and, if needs be, they mustbe sent to jail for their criminal activi-ties. We love our country. South Africais not a banana republic and there is nofree lunch.”

A suspect was arrested for the pos-session of firearms near the Stan-dard Bank in Annan Road on 3 May.

The police noticed, and sear-ched, a suspicious man carrying abrown bag at around 19:40.

They found two firearms and am-

munition, as well as a white plasticbag containing gold-bearing materi-al.

The firearms were a silver Norin-co pistol and a brown modified hun-ting rifle, neither of which had serialnumbers.

The Lesotho national was subse-quently arrested and charged.

The Merafong City Local Municipalityhas decided to borrow R51 300 000to fund various projects.

During the special council meetingof 30 April, the council decided to takeout a 10-year loan from Nedbank, oneof the four service providers who ten-dered for the loan. At Nedbank’s stipu-lated interest rate of 9,94%, the muni-cipality will have to pay back a totalof R81 593 564.40 within the stipula-ted period.

According to the municipality, theextra money is needed for projects ap-proved in the Capital Budget for the

2014/15 financial year. This is for theconstruction of new roads in Wedela(R3 million), Kokosi (R5 million) andin Khutsong (R15 million), and twobulk electrical infrastructure projects.The Fochville bulk substation is worthR7,9 million and an upgrade of Foch-ville’s main substation will cost R15million.

The municipality says the two roadprojects in Kokosi and Khutsong arealready under construction but needadditional funding because internalrevenue does not cover the total cost.The Wedela roads project has not be-gun, although long overdue, becauseof a lack of funding.

Council also heard that the twoFochville bulk substation projects willupgrade the electrical capacity to pro-vide for the current and future deve-lopment. The Fochville bulk substati-on work will be implemented by Es-kom, but the municipality has to payits contribution.

The Fochville main substation up-grade is in the planning phase in thecurrent financial year and implemen-tation is to start in the next financialyear to support the new Kokosi hou-sing development, which has alreadybeen approved by the Department ofHuman Settlement.

The official opposition in Merafong,

the DA, through Mr Blackie Zwart,tried in vain to make its voice heardagainst the taking of the loan.

“This long-term loan increases theCouncil’s long term loan liability toR92 million, the repayments of whichthe Council can hardly afford. The De-velopment Bank of South Africa hasalready warned council that its finan-cial situation does not qualify it foranother loan of this amount. According to the WPFD page on the UNESCO (The Uni-ted Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organi-sation) website, this international day was proclaimed bythe UN General Assembly in 1993 following a recommen-dation adopted at the 26th Session of UNESCO’s GeneralConference in 1991.

This, in turn, was in response to a call by African journa-lists who, in 1991, produced the landmark Windhoek De-claration on media pluralism and independence.

The day celebrates the fundamental principles of pressfreedom; evaluates press freedom globally, defends themedia from attacks on their independence and pays tribu-te to those who have died in the exercise of their professi-on.

This year’s theme was “Let Journalism Thrive! TowardsBetter Reporting, Gender Equality, and Media Safety inthe Digital Age”.

Although some international statistics may sound veryfar removed, issues closer to home have to be acknowled-ged. Although media freedom in SA is far better than inthe old dispensation, it is only ranked as “satisfactory”,11 places lower on the annual Press Freedom Index of theorganisation, Reporters Without Borders, than last year.

The index scored SA in the 42nd position of 180 coun-tries. Finland is in the top spot for the fourth year running,closely followed by Netherlands and Norway.

At the other end, the last three positions are again heldby Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea, where free-dom of information is non-existent.

Although our situation is far from that in these coun-tries, it must still be guarded by everyone who wants anopen and free society.

Like humans, angels are personali-ties who display intelligence, emotionand free will. But while humans areboth spiritual and material beings(Jam 2:26) angels are only spirit.(Heb 1:14) They sometimes appear inthe glory of the Lord (Luke 2:9), some-times as men (Heb 13:2; Mar 16:5),and sometimes appear as strangeforms (Isa 6; Ezk 1).

Angels are limited beings and arenot omniscient (2 Pet 2:11). They desi-re to learn more about the gospel (1Pet 1:12) and rejoice when a sinner re-pents. (Lk 15:10)

Angels worship God (Ps 148:2; Heb1:6) and serve Him (Psa 103:20). They

announce and execute judgment onGod’s command (Rev 14:6-7; Rev16:1).

Angels also appear to be some-how involved in bringing answers toprayer requests (Dan 10:12; Acts12:5-10), though as mere servantsof God they are never to be prayedto or worshiped. To do so would bea terrible sin. (Col 2:18)

Angels observe our world, takinga special interest in Christ’s workon the cross. (1 Pet 1:12) No doubtthey were amazed to see the Lordstep out of glory and into our fallenworld.

They must have marveled at thethought of He who knew no sin be-coming sin on our behalf. (2 Cor5:21) Every day they witness Hisgrace in the lives of believers and it

causes them to praise His holy name. Itshould cause us, the recipients of Hisgrace, to do no less.

God created angels to serve Him

Where is the water? People ofKhutsong asked this questionduring the Freedom Day longweekend.

And I was immediately remi-nded of the letter I wrote justthe other week. By saying thatMerafong Municipality did notowe Rand Water and Eskom, Iwas actually at the forefront ofcongratulating the MCLM forthe stuff going on there. God,just the thought of it gave mestomach cramps and endlessheadaches - I wanted to runand hide!

Then, something came tomind. If you want answers,you go to relevant people. But,how do you ask questionswhen everybody at the CityCouncil is on leave? Again, thestress started to mount.

Up and down in the streetsof Skopas, I see those who arenot worried at all. Later, onSunday, 26 April I heard somevery disturbing news thatcould be true, given the lifesty-le and behaviour of the peopleof Khutsong. I believed it atfirst and got very upset. I reallywanted God to intervene, but Icould not even go to church be-cause the whole congregation

was on a visit to North West. I wanted to go to the ward council-lor, but the nature of the newsmade it impossible for me to facehim or ask if it was true.

I then went to the KhutsongExt. 3 reservoirs to see for my-self. Life there was normal. Eve-rybody was minding their ownbusiness. When I saw a munici-pal bakkie, I rushed over and en-quired about the news.

“Sir, I heard there is the bodyof a dead woman in the reservoir.I also believe she was raped befo-re being dumped there. Is ittrue?”

The young municipal employ-ee’s reply sounded cheeky.

“Look at that big, round, con-crete structure.

Do you see anywhere that anormal, or even abnormal, per-son can carry a dead body andput it inside that reservoir?”

I said no, and he started to ex-plain how a reservoir works. Hetook me and showed me a doorat the foot of the giant structure.I expected to see a staircase lea-ding to the top, but there were on-ly some buttons that switch thepumps on and off, nothing else.

He said the problem withKhutsong people is that they be-lieve everything they hear beforeverifying the facts.

“The problem here is a bro-ken pipe that we are dealingwith. This type of pipe requi-res more than normal pat-ching. It is a steel pipe thatneeds to be welded.

The relevant people will onlybe able to do the work on Tues-day,” he said. He also told methat he is actually the acting su-perintendent at the water de-partment and has been in theemploy of the municipality for15 years. In all those years, hehas never heard of anybody orany-thing being put into the re-servoir, except when technici-ans work on it. So, the peopleof Khutsong can continuedrinking water from theirtaps. I can safely say the wateris fine for drinking, cookingand bathing.

Go on and enjoy your demo-cratic rights, but use the watersparingly. After all, South Afri-ca is a water-scarce country.

Various accidents occurred on roads in the areaduring the past week.

A bus collided with a light motor vehicle on theR559, approximately 12 km from Carletonville,on 30 April.

The light motor vehicle allegedly drove awayafter the incident, leaving four of the five passen-gers in the bus injured. One of these patients wascritically injured and his leg had to be amputated.Local authorities were on scene for investigationbut the cause of the collision is still unknown.

One person was killed and four were seriouslyinjured when another taxi collided with a LandRover at the junction of Annan Road and P111on 2 May. Nine people sustained minor injuries.ER24’s advanced rescue services transported thevictims to hospital.

On 5 May, an accident involving a Quantum taxiand a white Corolla occurred on the R500 roadon the way to Fochville. The driver of the Quantumtaxi had apparently lost control and collided withthe car that was in the process of overtaking it.

Both drivers sustained serious injuries andwere rushed to hospital.

The special council meeting of 30 Aprilsaw much debate over the spending ofadditional money for certain projects.

In one of the items, the mayor askedthe council to note that he had approvedan amount of R31 million in additionalexpenses for vehicle lease costs. The le-ader of the official opposition, Mr Blac-kie Zwart of the DA, pointed out that itwas the council that needed to approvesuch expenditure and not the mayor. Heargued that, although the council sawthe additional expenditure as unfore-seen or unavoidable, the DA consideredit to be over-expenditure. Since thecouncil had a written contract, it musthave known about the cost implicationsspelt out in the contract, he said. In theDA’s opinion, it was a gross oversight onthe part of the council not to include allthe contracted expenditure implicationsin its budget. As a result, the applicablevote will now be overspent.

In another item before the council,the mayor had approved another R6, 278 million as additional expenditureon the council’s grass cutting contract and asked that the council take note ofher decision.

This item also read that the expendi-ture was unforeseen or unavoidable.Zwart again made his voice heard andsaid the DA considered it to be bad ma-nagement of contract work and its costs.The DA argued that in the revised bud-get, the provision for grass cutting hadbeen reduced, but the council had nottaken into consideration work that hadalready been done, but not yet paid for.In the DA’s opinion, it was this that hadcaused the ‘additional expenditure’.Zwart said it was, in fact, an over-expen-diture and not ‘unforeseen or unavoida-ble’ as stated by the council.

In yet another item, the council hadto condone irregular expenditure ofR301 million because the accounting of-ficer had not signed off the bid specifica-tion documents before the tenders had

been advertised. While council explained that IT chal-

lenges had prevented tenders from be-ing advertised on the Construction In-

dustry Development Board’s website,the DA insisted that the reason for theirregular expenditure was unaccepta-ble.

What is probably Carletonville’s dirti-est park is currently raising the tem-pers of people staying near it.

According to residents of AzuriteStreet in Carletonville, the park in thisstreet is steadily looking worse. Alt-hough recyclers sometimes come andpick up rubbish in the park, muchrubbish is left lying around.

“It really looks terrible here. Myneighbour has phoned the municipali-ty several times, but they only come toclean it once in a while,” one of the resi-dents staying close to the park told theHerald. She says much of the rubbishtends to come from businesses and te-nants of the building next to the park.The tenants, apparently, often puttheir rubbish bags out too late for themunicipality to pick it up. They arejust left there and get torn open, lea-

ving the rubbish strewn over the park.In some cases, tenants that move outjust leave whatever they do not want.

When the Herald’s journalist visi-ted the park on Monday morning, he-aps of tyres, most likely from a nearbybusiness that re-treads old tyres, werepiled up on the side of the park. Somewere even lying next to playgroundequipment in the park. An assortmentof rubbish, including numerous girl’sschool shoes and pieces of carpet, wasscattered all over the park. There wasnot a single section of the park thatwas free of rubbish when the Heraldvisited. Workers of a grass-cuttingcontractor for the municipality werealso at the park during the Herald’s vi-sit. They, and residents of the area ad-mit that they just run their machinesover the rubbish when they cut thegrass in the park. They also say thepark is the dirtiest in the Carletonville

area. “We are paid to

cut the grass, notclean up the rub-bish. We are so-metimes afraid ofdamaging our in-dustrial machi-nes when we cutover the rubbish.If it gets dirtier wewill not be able tocut the grass hereanymore,” one ofthe workers toldthe Herald.

Meanwhile, aMerafong Citycouncil spoke-sperson said thematter had beenbrought to the at-tention of thewaste section.The municipalityclears litter andrubbish that hasillegally beendumped, on a ro-tational basis. Hesaid the areawould receive at-tention as soon asthe team moves toCarletonville. Healso said the alle-gation against thebusinesses andoccupants of theflats would be in-vestigated andcorrective actionimplemented.

Die wedloop is die ideale voorberei-der vir die Comrades Marathon wat op31 Mei plaasvind. Daar is ook ‘n 15 kmwedloop vir diegene wat korter afstan-de verkies.

Alle hardlopers en stappers is wel-kom om die wedloop te doen wat by diePotchefstroom Dam Ontspannings-oord se restaurant aangebied word. Ditis ‘n uit en terug roete en dit begin om07:00. Stappers wat die 32 km doenbegin om 06:15. Daar word ook ‘n 5kmpretloop aangebied, wat om 07:10 be-gin. Daar is medaljes vir alle atlete enstappers wat die onderskeie wedlopevoltooi. Daar is geen afsnytyd nie.

Fochville XKT skopboksklub se jong vegters het weer onlangs aan die “Clash of TinyTitans” toernooi te Brakpan deelgeneem en altesaam 14 medaljes verower. Voor is Zacvan der Berg (brons), Regard van der Berg (brons), Mornè Jansen v Rensburg (twee goud)en Muller van Wyk (brons). Agter is Alicia Maass (goud), Benjamin Peach (brons en goud),JJ McIntyre (goud), Jayden Palm (brons) en Amorie Maass (twee goud). Heelagter isdie klub se afrigter, Shihan Jaco Pretorius.

The XKT kickboxing club in Carletonville's“tiny tigers” participated in the Tiny Titansevent held at Brakpan indoor sport arenaon 25 April. This was a development eventfor fighters of 14 years and younger to improve their kickboxing skills.

A number of schools in Khutsong parti-cipated in the chess tournament thattook place at Hlangabeza PrimarySchool on 25 April.

Organised by head coach, IsraelTshabadira and assistant coach, Mand-la Katshambe, the tournament began at08:00, with eager young men and wo-men gathering to compete.

Sixty learners from Tsitsiboga, Naya-boswa and Hlangabeza Primaryschools, as well as Badirile and Tswas-ungu High schools, thrashed it out onthe squares until 17:00. Tebogo Magalewon the u.15 level with Sibusiso Manqi-na in the 2nd place and Thabiso Mqeka-ne in third.

At u.13 level, the 1st place went toMpumelelo Mzimeni, 2nd place to Vuya-ni Kula and 3rd to Thandi Ngwabeni.Njabulo Moni came first at u.11 level,with Thato Malefetsa and MpumeleloDodo in second and thirdplace respectively.

The tournament wasinitiated to change percep-tions that chess is only forthe rich, and to show thatanyone can do it and beco-me a professional. It alsoaimed to evaluate the lear-ners and prepare them forthe school leagues thatstart on 6 May. There willalso be district competiti-ons for individuals on 15May. The winners of boththe above will competeprovincially on 29 and 30May.

The head coach plans

to introduce chess to all Khutsongschools, as well as individuals. The ga-me is very beneficial for youngsters, hel-ping to improve concentration, pro-blem-solving skills, thinking and decisi-on-making and calculating risks. It alsoteaches children that their actions haveconsequences.

Tshabadira believes it should not on-ly be implemented in private schools asa subject, but also in other schools.

Hoërskool Fochville se wintersport-spanne is steeds besig om hul oppo-nente ‘n moeilike tyd te gee.

Hierdie spanne het op Woensdag29 April in hul jaarlikse vriendskap-like sportdag teen spanne van dieHoër Tegniese skool Carel de Wetvan Vanderbijlpark te staan gekom.

Volgens Hoërskool Fochville sesportorganiseerder, mnr. BobbyMcLeod, was dit die laaste keer indie jaar wat Fochies se rugby, netbalen hokkie op een dag saam gespeelhet. Voortaan sal die spanne net inhul onderskeie ligas speel waar diewedstryddae nie ooreenstem nie.

Fochies se netbalspanne het uit-stekende netbal gespeel en slegs eenwedstryd verloor uit die agt wat opdie dag gespeel is.

Die o/14 A-span het 14 - 3, die o/14B-span 9 - 3, die o/15 A-span 23 - 16,die o/16 A-span 18 - 8, die tweede

span 35 - 6 en die eerste span 14 -11 gewen. Die o/16 B-span het 12 -12 gelykop gespeel, terwyl die o/15B-span 6 - 18 verloor het.

Intussen het twee van die skool sehokkiespanne hul wedstryde gewen,terwyl drie hul wedstryde verloorhet. Die o/14’s en tweedes het mettellings van onderskeidelik 1 - 0 en2 - 0 gewen. Die o/15’s het 1 - 2, dieo/16’s 0 - 3 en die eerstes 0 -2 verloor.

Fochies se rugbyspanne het ooknie op hul laat wag met net die o/14’swat nie die mas teen Carel de Wet sespanne kon opkom nie.
