Plastic Affect Animals & Humans

Oceans are the first victims of the plastic pollution threat. Plastic waste can be found in all the oceans, constituting 90 percent of the oceans’ pollution. Many heart-breaking footages of sea animals, such as turtles and fish, can be seen. Such torture that plastic can inflict may slow down body growth and/or cause severe mutilation.

Not only is plastic bad for the ocean’s ecosystems, but it also pollutes our soil from the inside. The Blue Planet needs its oceans, and plastic is a real threat to its inhabitants and the quality of its water and soil.

Plastic is not usually found in the human body. However, with water and everyday l i fe materials, a certain amount manages to creep inside. Its components are even suspected of negative effects on hormones. Nowadays, there is no escaping the influence of plastic on our bodies. It seems that we are constantly in contact with it.

Reusing plastic items as much as possible is the first step to stopping plastic mass-production. When purchasing plastic goods, try to buy the widely recyclable types of plastic.

Additionally, some volunteer initiatives can help improve the pollution on beaches. Since the oceans are the first victims of plastic pollution, the beaches around the world, are susceptible to plastic waste. Sticking to a strict cleanup routine can help.

NEWS FROM THE SHIRE

19 SEPTEMBER 2018

I am delighted to advise that Ian Evans, our hard-working and dedicated Works Manager, received a Community Service Award from the Administrator for Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Mrs Natasha Griggs during Natasha’s visit to Cocos last week. Ian was surprised and very humble about it but to his colleagues it was well-earned and much deserved recognition of his tireless efforts. Congratulations and thank you Ian from all of us.

Councillors and staff were pleased to have an opportunity to meet with representatives from the Department of Defence about the Runway Upgrade Project. We believe there are several opportunities to leverage from this project to get some great outcomes for our community beyond the actual runway project such as local business engagement, local employment and utilising plant and equipment while it is already on Island for community projects. We will be working with Council to ensure we make every effort to realise those opportunities. We thank the Department of Defence for making an effort to engage with us early in the project and acknowledge Natasha Griggs, Administrator for Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands for her vital role in securing this visit. The response from the community to the briefing sessions was outstanding which demonstrated to the Department the community interest in this major project. It is likely that the team will visit again early in the new year so we should get further updates at the point.

Luluk Sloan, the Shire’s Community Projects Officer and I were privileged to be invited to meet the Senior Leaders from the Cocos Island District High School last week. They outlined the work they are doing to investigate the possibility of having a skate park on West Island. They are to be commended on their proactive approach and their willingness to work hard to see their vision realised. The future is in good hands with this outstanding group of young people.

An officer and inspector from the DWER Regulatory Services unit were on Cocos last week. They inspected our licensed Waste Management sites and acknowledged the significant improvements made by Ian and the team over the past two years. They also offered suggestions on further enhancements to the way in which we manage our waste which we will investigate over the coming months.

The month has flown past and the September Council meeting is almost upon us. Council will be formally considering whether to proceed to the next stage of the lease with Hender Property Group for the Eco-Resort, a new retail precinct on Home Island, the request from Parks Australia regarding a reptile conservation program, specifically the introduction of the Blue-tailed skink to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (Pulu Belan and Pulu Kembang). Council meetings are open to the community so anyone can observe the decision making process. The Council meeting will be at Council Chambers on Home Island on Wednesday 26 September and will start at 4pm.

I would also take this opportunity to acknowledge Mr Parson Yapat (Nek Ainul) who has formally retired from the Shire. Nek Ainul’s enormous contributions to the Shire and the Community as the Works Supervisor will be long remembered and appreciated. We will miss his expertise and knowledge but also wish him the very best in his retirement. Terima kasih Nek, enjoy the fishing.

SHIRE WORKS

As you may have seen on West Island the Shire undertook a contract with the Department of Infrastructure to replace the sand bags that were dislodged through the swell event that wreaked havoc on West Islands in early July.

There were 5 section to be reconstructed, from the back of the medical centre through to the seawall at the south end of the runway. As shown in the Photos, the secondary wall was not affected. Well done to all of those involved in completing this task in a safe and professional manner.

The Shire have also put in place a mulch bin in the Green waste area at the West Island Transfer Station. The mulch is free for those who would like to use the mulch. It’s a great water saver! The Shire is looking to replicate this on Home Island. I would like to ask those that are taking their green waste to the transfer station, that any hard wood be placed in front of the Mulcher. Please don’t put coconuts, palm fronds or coconut logs in with the hard wood.

I would also like to mention that Nek Ainul (Works Supervisor) is retiring after 30+ years with the Shire. Nek Ainul has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Shire over the years and will be deeply missed in this position. I would like to wish Nek Ainul all the best in his retirement years.

KERJAAN SHIRE

Quote of the Day

An American Goes To Oz

Randy, a Texan farmer goes to Australia for a vacation. There he meets an Glen, an Aussie farmer and gets talking.

The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the Texan says, 'Oh yeah. We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large.'

Then they walk around the ranch a little, and the Glen shows off his herd of cattle. Then Randy immediately says, 'We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows.'

The conversa t i on has , meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field and so he asks, 'And what are those?'

'Glen', the Aussie replies with an incredulous look, 'Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas.'

Marriage, separation and divorce II

These are short articles about legal issues that may interest you. They are not legal advice. You should always get individual legal advice for your situation.

This article will talk about divorce. The first article talked about marriage and separation in Australia.

Divorce is the official ending of a marriage in Australia. You must be divorced before you can marry again, otherwise you commit a criminal offence called bigamy.

What are the requirements to apply for a divorce?

The only basis upon which to apply for a divorce is that the marriage has “broken down irretrievably.” The only way to show this is that the couple have been separated for 12 months, called “living separately and apart.”

Neither party can stop the other from applying for a divorce, once the parties have been separated for 12 months.

The only ways to oppose an application for a divorce are to allege that the parties have not been separated for 12 months, or that the Family Court does not have jurisdiction (authority to deal with the matter). This might be by saying there was no valid marriage in the first place.

To apply for a divorce in Australia, you must:

• be an Australian citizen or

• normally live in Australia and have lived in Australia for the previous 12 months

• regard Australia as your permanent home and intend to stay in Australia.

Living separately and apart under the one roof

Most people when they separate live in different homes. You can still be “living separately and apart” if you live the same home, and therefore entitled to apply for a divorce after 12 months, but you must prove that you have really separated to the Court.

The Court will look at things such as whether you sleep in different bedrooms, have ceased a sexual relationship, have separated your finances, no longer do domestic chores for each other, no longer go out together and whether family and friends view you as being separated.

If you are making a sole application for a divorce (see below) you must file an affidavit (a sworn statement of evidence) to show that you have separated even though living in the same home and you should also file one from someone independent to help show this.

If you are making a joint application for a divorce (see below) both you and your spouse must file affidavits to show that you have separated even though living in the same home and you should file one from someone independent to help show this.

How do you apply?

You apply online on the Family Court of Western Australia website, through a button called the Commonwealth Courts portal.

You can apply for a divorce alone (sole application) or jointly with your spouse (joint application). If the two of you apply jointly, you do not need to serve (which means formally deliver) the divorce application to your spouse, because your spouse will already know about it.

You need to provide your marriage certificate and pay the filing fee.

If you make a sole application for a divorce, you must serve your spouse with the application, once it has been filed with the Family Court. The application will have the date of hearing on it. There are special rules about service and proving to the Court that your spouse has been properly served, in one of several ways possible. You cannot physically serve your spouse with the application yourself, but you can serve them by mail, provided they sign an Acknowledgement of Service form agreeing that they have been served.

If you applying jointly, neither of you need attend Court, even if there are children of the marriage under 18. If you are applying solely, and there are children of the marriage under 18, you will need to attend the hearing. You may be able to attend by telephone.

When can you remarry?

You can remarry after your divorce order becomes final. This is one month and one day after the hearing of your divorce application.

Fees

There is currently a filing fee of $865, with a reduced fee of $290 for certain concession card holders and people in financial hardship.

If your marriage is less than 2 years

If you want to divorce and the marriage is less than 2 years, you must file a counselling certificate with your divorce application. In order to do this you must attend a counselling session. You ring the Family Relationship Advice Line to organise counselling. You must also have been separated 12 months.

You can get divorced in Australia if you were married overseas

If you satisfy the criteria above, and your marriage is recognised in Australia, as discussed in last article, you can get divorced in Australia, even if you married overseas. You will need to file your marriage certificate with the Court and a translation of it, with an affidavit from the translator, if it is in another language.

Banyak orang-orang bila mereka berpisah mereka tinggal ditempat-tempat berlainan.
