It is a well-know fact that trees and plants are also living beings. They need food, water,and air for survival. It is interesting t know how they take their food. Plants derive their food both from the earth and the air. If you minutely look at their roots,you will find that the ends of these roots are like fine fibres. We call them root-hairs. Theyabsorb water and minerals and transport them upwards to the leaves through the (rank and thebranches. If is the leaves which prepare the food. The green material, chlorophyl, present in the leaves prepares the food like a machine. Ifconverts the carbon dioxide taken from the air and water from the ground into sugar with thehelp of sunlight. This chemical reaction is called photosynthesis. In fact, the chlorophyl takesenergy from the sunlight and uses it to synthesize the hydrogen from water and carbon fromcarbon dioxide for making sugar. This reaction also gives out oxygen and water which areexcreted by the leaves. Sugar is further converted into starch and is stored in the plant. The minerals are convertedby chemical processes into proteins, juice, oil, and other edible materials. The plants use thesematerials as their food for growth. This food gradually passes on all the parts of the plant. A partof this food is deposited in the seed under formation in the plant. This accumulated food in theseed is used in germination.
