UV rays (Ultraviolet radiation) are a type of radiations that are electromagnetic. These
come from either sun or from other resources that are made by man. These other
resources are like welding torches and tanning beds. Any form of source which sends out
any kind of energy or emits any kind of rays is called radiation. There are tons of
radiations that vary from one another based on their different radiation levels. There are
radiations that are very high in frequency like gamma rays and x-rays. In addition to this,
there are radiations that are low in frequency like radio waves. However, when it comes to
ultraviolet rays, they are considered to fall in the middle of these frequencies and
spectrum. Their energy is more than lights that are visible but they are not as high in
frequency as x-rays.
When it comes to ultraviolet radiations, they also differ from one another. Thus, there are
many types of Radiations. These are typically based on the energy which they emit.
Radiations that are ionized in nature are typically considered to be the Rays that are very
high in energy. Why are these considered ionized radiations? It is because their energy
level is so high that they have the power to remove or break an electron. It can be broken
from either a molecule or an atom. This process is called ionization. However, if these
radiations are used on the body then they are said to have a very damaging impact on the
cell of DNA. Yet, these Radiations that are very high in energy are not so high that they
can easily penetrate in the body. Rather, they can only affect the skin area. But, there are
genetic cells everywhere in the body which means that if these rays have a dangerous
impact on skin then these must be avoided at any cost. It is also studied that if these are
used on skin, they can turn the normal cells into cancerous cells.

Types of UV rays
Ultraviolet radiations are divided into three major groups. These groups are as follows;
1. UVA Rays –these are the type of rays which have the lowest form of energy when it
comes to UV rays. Their impact can be understood by the simple fact that if they get in
contact with the skin then there rays can make the cells of the skin to age quickly.
Moreover, these rays can also cause damage to the skin indirectly as they can damage the
DNA of skin cells. The main link between Rays and skin is that it causes long term damage
like wrinkles and development of cancer cells.
2. UVB Rays –these rays a little bit more energy as compared to UVA rays. These rays
have the power to affects the cells of skin much more directly. It is the impact of these
rays that sunburn happens on the skin. These rays are the ones which mostly causes
cancer.
3. UVC Rays –these rays have the highest level of energy. However, due to high energy
levels these rays mostly stay higher than the base of earth. These interact openly with
ozone layer. This explains how high it stays in the air. Thus, these rays are generally not
able to reach to the ground that is why they are not risky to human bodies. On the other
hand, these rays are also emitted from various sources that are made by man like mercury
lamps, bulbs that are UV sanitized, and welding torches etc. These rays are also used in
creating germs and bacteria killing devices.
Sunlight –the main source of UV light
Sunlight is considered to be the biggest and the main source through which we receive UV
light or UV radiations. Even though as per the researches, it is said that these rays are
considered to be a very minor part of the whole portion of rays of sun. This is the basic
reason why the amount of rays which reaches the ground from sun also differs greatly. It
is also mentioned in various studies that the 95 percent of the UV radiations which reach
to the ground are mostly UVA rays, and the remaining are UVB rays which are almost 5
percent in ratio. These rays also vary in strength because of various factors like which
time of the day it is that these rays are reaching to the ground. In addition to this, sunlight
also vary from season to season. Moreover, the distance which the place has from the
equator or the latitude also counts when it comes to Radiations. Moreover, on higher
altitudes Radiations that reach to the ground are higher in strength. Moving forward, if
the weather is cloudy than the strength of UV light also vary a bit. Lastly, these have the
tendency to bounce off from the surfaces like sand, water, pavement, grass or even snow.
Therefore, making the exposure of them further stronger.
