Usaha Gas: Pemahaman Konsep

Sebuah tabung tertutup piston yang dapat bergerak bebas berisi gas. Karena terjadi pemuaian,volume gas bertambah sebesar V dari volume awal V1 ke volume akhir V2, sehingga piston seluas Aberpindah sejauh s. bBerapakah besarnya usaha oleh gas ini? Kita misalkan gaya dorong yangdikerahkan oleh gas adalah sebesar F dan menghasilkan tekanan pada piston sebesar P. Usaha (W)adalah hasil kali gaya dan perpindahan yang terjadi, yaitu:

Tekanan P yang dihasilkan adalah besarnya gaya dorong F terhadap piston seluas A, sehinggabesarnya gaya F dapat ditulis sebagai:

Substitusi Persamaan (**) ke (*), kita dapatkan

Hasil kali luas penampang piston A dan perpindahan piston s menunjukkan perubahan volume yang terjadi padagas. Dengan demikian, kita dapatkan besarnya usaha yang dilakukan gas, yaitu:

W = P V

Selain mengalami pertambahan volume (V bernilai positif), gas dapat pula mengalami pengurangan volume (Vbernilai negatif) akibat usaha yang dikerahkan oleh lingkungan terhadap gas (misalnya piston diberi pemberat sehingga gastertekan). Usaha bernilai positif jika sistem gas melakukan usaha terhadap lingkungan. Sebaliknya, usaha bernilai negatif jikalingkungan melakukan usaha terhadap sistem gas.

a. Karena gas memuai, berarti terjadi perubahan volume positif. Besarnya volume akhir (V2), yaitu:
