The Simple Past and the Past Progressive

The Simple Past a. Mary and her husband walked

downtown yesterday.

b. I slept for eight hours last night.

c. That night there was a fierce storm and

the Tamarind tree was blown down.

The Simple Past is used to talk about

an activity or situation that began

and ended at a particular time in the

past. (e.g., yesterday, last night, two

days ago, that night, in 1999).

The Past Progressive d. I sat down at the dinner table at 6:00

p.m. yesterday. Tom came to my house

at 6:10 p.m.

I was eating dinner when Tom came.

e. I went to bed at 10:00 last night. The

narrator tells the audience about who is in the story, when the story is taking place,

and where the action is happening.

b. Complications that set off a chain of events that influence what will happen in the

story.

c. Resolutions in which the characters finally sort out the complications.
