NDC has over 40 years’ experience providing high precision, on-line coatweight and moisture measurements to the converting industry. Extensive applications engineering work has created instruments that are tolerant to changes in product appearance, providing robust measurements over a wide range of coatings and substrates.

NDC’s pedigree spans eight generations of gauges and our technology has been successively optimized to achieve the fastest, highest-resolution measurements available - essential for fixed or scanning gauges - to provide the best CD and/or MD resolution.

Our range of gauge configurations provides optimum performance on a range of converted products, including aluminium, paper and transparent films.

NDC design also ensures that our measurements are not affected by ambient condition changes, such as lighting, temperature or RH. The resultant long-term stability makes NDC gauges ideally suited for process control.

NDC is unique in being able to offer 4 different optical configurations of its NIR (near infrared) gauges to enable optimized measurements of moisture and coatings on different substrate types.

The IG710e Backscatter Gauge (also called diffuse reflection) is ideal for the measurement of moisture in, or water-based or organic coatings (wet or dry end) on paper, board and other substrates.

The SR710e Reflectance Gauge uses highly specialized optics to measure thin, clear or lightly pigmented organic coatings on aluminium or metallized film or foil substrates.

The FG710e Transmission Gauge is designed to measure the thickness of plastic films and coatings on films. It can also be configured to measure individual layers in multi-layer co-extrusions. An alternative transmission format, the FS710e Forward Scatter Gauge, captures diffusely transmitted energy to measure moisture in thicker papers or boards, where internal stratification of the moisture has occurred. The Forward Scatter Gauge is the recommended alternative to the backscatter gauge in such instances.

Complementing the on-line NIR gauges, the MX8000 uses microwave technology to provide fast, accurate, highly repeat-able at-line measurements of moisture in paper and board samples and is widely used in paper-making, converting and printing as the de facto standard for paper moisture.

In the Converting Industry, NDC Gauges are usually supplied as part of a complete scanning system with both machine direction and cross-web profile displays, and in many cases, control of key parameters such as coating weight, thick-ness and moisture content. Single and dual-sided scanning frames are available depending on the type of gauge required.

NDC Gauging Systems can also be configured for fixed-point measurements with local Operator Workstations and/or a local or remotely located HMI.

Connectivity to the process (eg: PLC) ormanagement information system (eg: SCADA) is provided via analogue and digital outputs as well as via Fieldbus/Networking options, for which most protocols are available. Flexible network-ing capabilities provide for complete choice in gauge and device location.

Systems are easy to upgrade by adding gauges, scanning frames or additional interfaces, or moving locations as process needs change.

Each NDC NIR gauge is supplied with GaugeToolsXL™ software. Running on a PC, this Windows™ based program enables convenient adjustment of gauge settings and calibration to a laboratory reference method. GaugeToolsXL also includes measurement display, data- logging and diagnostics tools. The graphical interface also allows MD trending for process diagnostics such as detection, and correction, of cyclical or repetitive process trends.
